About the customer One of the central bank of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the central bank of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Some of the functions include issuing the supervising commercial banks, managing foreign exchange reserves and promoting price and exchange rate stability, among others. The senior management of customer consists of the governor, the vice-governor and five deputy governors.

Business drivers/Challenges

Inability of the HR department to impart knowledge on internal policies and procedures with respect to technical approach and practices. Technical limitations with standard SAP offerings such as UI libraries, etc. Inability to create Arabic version of the applications and implementing Hijri calendar into the applications. Lack of updated information regarding loan repayments leading to chaos and disorganized transactions Inability of the employees to access requests pertaining to employment letters including getting timely status updates.

The Solution

The customer was looking for a solution to allow users to manage their SAP Employee Self-Service (ESS) and Manager Self-Service (MSS) tasks on a standardized platform using SAP Fiori that works and is compatible on any device.

About the customer Customer is a public research university located in Thuwal, Saudi Arabia. Client was built and is operated by Saudi Aramco. It has the third largest endowment of any university in the world after Harvard and Yale.

Challenges

Implementation of hundreds of SAP notes to bring My Inbox application to a stable state. Pulling attachments to display from various sources via internal SAP and external DMS (Document Management System). Inability to address the needs of complex home grown business applications via My Inbox architecture – approve or edit the documents Complex workflow processes leading to delayed approvals

The Solution

Customer currently uses SAP as its ERP system and was facing few challenges with its current implementation landscape. In order to mitigate their challenges and to streamline their existing SAP workflow processes, customer was looking for a solution to allow users to be able to manage their SAP Workflow approvals on a standardized platform using SAP Fiori that works on any device. In other words, it was looking to deploy the SAP Fiori – My Inbox that will enable users to approve various documents in their SAP Inbox on the SAP Fiori UI. Apart from that, the solution should offer real-time integration with the various backend SAP applications (SAP ECC, SAP BPM, SAP SRM and SAP CRM). Customer was having a critical need to customize this application to display additional set of information, enabling users to take appropriate decision on the documents. Innovapptive implemented its RDS of SAP Fiori apps within their 3-tier development, quality and production environments. Customization of purchase orders and shopping cart tasks from SRM

The customization of purchase order and shopping cart tasks include display of additional set of information at header and line item levels, provision to edit the line item information including date, quantity, & price and approval/rejection of the documents as per the release strategies defined in SAP.

Customization of Claims and reimbursements

My Inbox was customized to display additional set of information for claims and reimbursements, enabling users to take appropriate decisions and review the supporting documents submitted towards the settlement of claims and reimbursements. Visitor Management System

My Inbox was customized to display additional set of information for visitor management system, enabling users to take appropriate decisions on the submitted requests of the visitor and also for referring the supporting documents submitted by the visitor. All visitor’s documents that were stored in DMS were brought into the application and displayed for the appropriate visitor, enabling a user to take appropriate decision pertaining to his/her visit.

As outlined in the previous section, deploying an SAP Fiori app at the customer’s environment involves a lot of factors including their current technological landscape, unique user requirements and security. As part of Innovapptive’s key implementation strategies across a wide range of clients, specifically with respect to SAP Fiori apps, we bring forth some of the key lessons, which are learnt during our clients’ implementations.

Don’t assume that SAP Fiori is just a simplified ‘copy’ of backend functionality

SAP Fiori is much more than a mere copy of backend functionality. The diversity of the configuration in SAP backend processes is huge. Most of the organizations take some time in setting up their SAP mobile platform, just to ensure that their backend processes are  customized in a different way for standard SAP apps to work.

Ensure that all critical functionality is tested

Once deployment phase ends, the most crucial phase is the testing phase that needs to be designed, based on your organization’s deployment strategy and diverse requirements of the users. Devise a suitable test plan, considering your organization’s infrastructure land scape, security and above all the varied requirements of your users that you intend to target. You can test the Fiori application on local Tomcat Sandbox, ABAP system and also on the Fiori Launchpad.

Partner closely with SAP Fiori Ramp Up support

SAP Ramp-Up is SAP's early adoption program for customers, who want to go live with SAP’s software applications as soon as possible. This ensures that your customers realize the benefits of SAP’s new solutions before their competitors. This is a collaborative effort of field, support and development teams to offer a program for secure and cost-effective implementation. Hence, it’s imperative that your organization constantly partners closely with SAP Fiori to ensure that it gets proper Ramp up support to help you understand the solutions, currently in Ramp-Up and upcoming programs in the Ramp-Up.

Test the UI on the most popular browsers

As part of the testing phase, you need to install and run SAP Fiori apps on multiple brows ers including checking the browser compatibility, unexpected behavior (if any) and UI responsiveness. From the technological perspective, test the UI on most widely used HTML-5 capable browsers (Google Chrome and IE 10 and above) and evaluate the perfor mance metrics and other parameters.

Leverage the SAP Fiori Launchpad to improve performance and solution stability on mobile devices

The SAP Fiori Launchpad is a framework that can run one Fiori app or a series of Fiori apps. The Fiori app a user can access in the Launchpad varies, depending on the user and what apps are assigned to that user or that user’s role. SAP Fiori Launchpad is a shell that hosts SAP Fiori apps and offers the apps with certain value added services such as navigation, personalization, embedded support and application configuration. Some of the value added features that you can accrue by leveraging SAP Fiori Launchpad include: Personalization of the layout Responsive design Search capabilities Theming and branding

Address the security architecture early, since mobile access and SSO can get very complicated

You need to have the authorizations on the frontend server for each single app (start authorizations for OData) services in order to access HTML5 based app/UI and the SAP Fiori Launchpad that is used by all apps as entry point. In other words, security architecture need to be in place to avoid any unexpected behaviors creeping up later. In fact, when you update SAP Fiori, it should not impact existing authorizations and moreover, when intro ducing new apps, they should flawlessly integrate into existing authorization concepts.

The more dated your SAP backend dependent application versions are, the more problematic your SAP Fiori app implementation will become, even if you meet the basic system requirements

The SAP Fiori related software components required at the backend server depends on the release level of the backend server. Also the principal or the transactional apps run on older backend server releases such as SAP NetWeaver Release 7.00 or higher, but below 7.40 and ECC 600/SRM 7.00 or higher. Hence, the above point as enlisted above assumes significance and has to be kept in mind, when embarking on SAP Fiori implementation.

Decide what strategy you need to use to make systems internet-accessible instantly

To address these issues, try to answer the following questions:

Will the development Fiori landscape be accessible to internet users simultaneously with PRD Fiori? Did the client do the QA testing internally on iPads, using internal URL that bypassed external authentication/external URLs?

Don’t assume SAP Fiori to be a complete mobile solution

This is one of the important lessons learnt during implementation as it would rather be a myth to assume that SAP Fiori is a complete mobile solution. SAP Fiori doesn’t include offline, push notifications, advanced SSO and usage analytics. Apply all the SAP notes before implementation

This is crucial as ignoring this aspect means you end up wasting weeks together in trouble shooting, searching and finding the root cause of the app that is not working. Applying SAP Notes may utmost take you just one week, but you tend to save considerable trouble shooting time. It is a general practice that BASIS or system admin would install the SAP notes. On the other hand, a Fiori Consultant can be the right expert to advise about the appropriate SAP notes to be installed.
