retained, which components are obsolete (e.g. BWA)?
2. Which additional main software components are
required?
o SLT
o AS ABAP and Java stacks
o Standalone database servers
3. How can planned landscape changes be integrated?

(e.g. separate HR system, regional instead of global
systems, …)
o Consolidation of systems (e.g consolidation of multiple
BW systems , reintegration of LoB systems into central
system, …)
o Systems to be decommissioned

Performance / Scalability
1. Are there top consumers or business critical
applications which require optimization prior migration
(e.g. to mitigate non-scalabilities or to reach SLAs)?
2. Is it required to verify in detail the performance of
custom applications as part of the migration project?
3. What should be the focus of single user and load tests
within the migration project?
Data volume
1. For which systems is data archiving or data deletion
advisable prior migrating the databases?
2. What is the status of DVM strategy after migration?

o What’s the estimated effort?
2. Which migration approach fits to the system downtime
requirements from business?
3. What testing is required for the migration approach?
4. What changes to the transport landscape are
required?

Deliverable 4: Technical architecture definition
Server and storage architecture
1. Should the current hardware / OS platform be retained and what’s their
purpose?
2. What updates are required to the existing OS?
3. What will be the scalability approach for the database server (e.g.
single high-scale vs. scale-out via multiple blades)?
4. What additional hardware is required and what could be their OS?
5. What changes to the current storage system / layout are required to
support the migration process and the final database?
6. How to integrate database backups into the storage infrastructure and
management software?
Virtualization concept
1. What virtualization method is appropriate for the future database
application, server hardware and OS? How are the other SW
components integrated?
2. What will be the mapping of virtual servers to the planned hardware
and the related mapping of technical components to new virtual
servers?
HA / DR concept
1. Can SAP HANA be integrated into an existing
HA/DR setup and what’s the architecture?
2. What HA/DR setup is advisable with respect to
SLAs?

Realization Migration Realization
Flexibility for roles and responsibilities in the realization
For the realization of the migration steps (set up of systems, test migrations, testing...)
different possibilities are foreseen – in order to be able to flexibly react on the concrete
customer situation
Realization tasks are done by the customer (or outsourcing partner)
Involvement of implementation partners or SAP consulting
Factory approach – remote execution of the majority of steps by SAP

Operational Readiness Concept & Project Setup - From Current to Future Concept
Guiding principles
Create an operational “inventory” of the DB environment
The inventory covers
– Roles, responsibilities and skills of the DBA team
– Current tools in use for managing the SAP DB’s (e.g., native DB administration tools, tools for running
backups…)
– Current procedures for DB operations (daily and ad-hoc, monitoring and administration), but also
project work
(e.g., DB copy procedures)
Current and To-Be state determine the transfer roadmap

Operational Readiness for BW on HANA Typical Approach
Approach
For achieving operational readiness, the following sequence of steps is recommended:
(1) Conduct an “Inventory/Planning” workshop “HANA Administration Workshop”
This Workshop comprises the following elements
a) Inventory of the current operations skills and practices
b) Knowledge transfer about HANA operations (principles, tools, best practices)
c) Joint definition of a customer-specific operations concept
(2) Define and agree a plan for up-skilling as well as for implementing new tools and
procedures
(3) Execute the plan (leveraging the MaxAttention/ActiveEmbedded Support team)

The delivery model and the division of work can be defined in a flexible way
tailored to the concrete customer situation (partners, division of work, priorities in
the project,….)

The tasks of executing migration and upgrade steps often is outtasked
to an implementation partner. The presented methodology is flexible to
include such work models.
If required, these tasks also can be taken over by SAP, e.g. using the
RDS service offering or a remote execution in a “factory approach”.
