• BOM Redlining is defined as the capability of an Engineer to propose changes to a BOM without actually updating the active engineering or production BOM in SAP

• Without this functionality, Engineers and others are required to practice work around solutions in order to complete their job• Work in spreadsheets outside the system• Enter changes in long text• Actually make changes in the BOM and then revert back if changes are not

approved

• The work around solutions at best get the job done, but do not meet strategic goals of customers implementing SAP PLM

What if your Engineers could do the following?

• Redline and propose changes to a BOM without actually changing the SAP engineering or production BOM

• And as they are doing a redline, have the following information available:– View relevant engineering and productions information about a material

within one click– Run BOM comparison against active BOM or others– Run quick cost calculation based on redline– Visibly see if there are pending changes or open redlines for a given

material

• How about if they could do this within the context of an engineering change process, and at later point, after approval, actually implement the redlined changes into the active BOMs with a few clicks

If they could, the engineering process would be improved and the use of SAP PLM would move closer to meeting its promise

Beyond providing technical functionality

• The right amount of functionality should be available

– Too many choices and options causes anxiety

– Tools must be designed with the user in mind

• Easy to roll out to your organization

– An Engineer should be prepared to use the tool with four hours of training

• Perceived as a positive addition

Markup Package Tree

• In simple terms, a markup package is a collection of redlines to individual BOMs. An individual BOM is represented as node on the tree

• For each BOM, you may have the following items:

– Supporting Documentation

– Reports based tied to the individual BOM (ex: Cost Report)

– An indicator showing if there are other open changes against this BOM or material

• Double clicking on the "BOM" populates the detailed information on the right pane

• Right clicking on a BOM will presents the user with options:

– BOM Compare

– Compare With Original

– Add Supporting Document

BOM Header Information• Detailed information about the current BOM being redlined

– Material number– BOM Usage– If it is tied to an existing plant– Validity date for snapshot of BOM– Current status of the redline

Component Information (Redline Area)• Redline BOM in an Excel type fashion• Beyond basic fields, easily add additional• Redline BOM in single or multi level mode (fully exploded BOM)• For each item, make the following proposed changes

– Replace, Add, Delete, New Quantity, Change Unit Of Measure

• Change types can be configured

Component Details

• Each tab in the component details area changes dynamically depending on which item in the BOM is selected

– Material information

– Classification information

– Where used list (Single level and multiple levels up)

– Used by (which plant are using the material)

– Stock levels by plant

– Documents associated to the material

– Associated change masters

A short list of capability

• Include multiple BOMs in a markup package• For a given design make multiple redlines• Complete redlines in the context of an engineering change• BOM redlining in single or multi level mode• For redline, run BOM compare against active BOM or other• Redlines completed in “Excel” type look and feel• Add additional fields to redline area• Redlining change types are fully definable• With the Component Details area, easily get to information required to do

analysis• Add supporting documentation to each redline• Create quick reports that can be run in click in the content of a redline

– Ex: Run a cost report based on the redline created

• Redlines associated to the actual SAP BOM and viewable from SAP Product Structure Browser

• Once approved, implement redlines in active engineering or productions BOMs
