Constitution Day Banquet Given By D. A. R. Chapter

One of the most elaborate social events of the Fall Season was the Constitution Banquet given by the San Diego Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution at the Athletic club on Wednesday night (6 PM, September 17, 1930) for about 150 guests. The room was decorated with large American flags as well as the chapter flags of the local society. The patriotic idea was also carried out by the use of huge bouquets of red, white and blue flowers upon the speakers table and smaller bouquets of like coloring upon the smaller tables which filled the center, the speakers table covering three sides. Mrs. Chester Allan Smith, Regent of the local Chapter presided. Dr. Howard G. Dunham pronounced the invocation, which was followed by the salute to the flag, read by Mrs. Willis E Allen, chairman of the flag committee. Following the banquet Mrs. James H. West first vice regent, read the message from the President General exhorting the society to remain faithful to the ideals of the framers of the Constitution. Many other patriotic organizations of the city were in attendance by invitation and greetings were brought from the Sons of the American Revolution by Brig. General William D. Beach, its President; from Surgeon Thomas Chiles Davis Chapter, Daughters of 1812 by its first vice regent, Miss Margaret Tate who responded in the absence of Miss Burry, its regent, who had been prevented in attending through illness. Mrs. Florence Hibbard responded for the past president of California and Nevada of the Ladies of the G. A. R. and Mrs. Hannocker for Datus E. Coon chapter Women’s Relief Corps. Greetings from the women of the American Legion were brought by Mrs. He. E. Cooper and from Stonewall Jackson Chapter, Daughters of the Confederacy, by Mrs. C. H. Woodward, past regent. Mrs. Smith then turned the gavel over to Mrs. Elizabeth C. S. Brown chairman of the program committee who called upon Clarence Springer for a vocal selection. Mr. Springer was accompanied by his wife and sang as his first number “My Country, My God, My Flag” and for his second number “A Sheik of the Desert Am I.” Mr. Springer in response to incessant applause announced that he would sing a navy song in honor of Admiral Reeves and rendered “Neptune.” Mrs. Brown introduced Rear Admiral Reeves Commander of the Aircraft Squadrons of the United States Navy.

5

Admiral Reeves first complimented the Daughters of the American Revolution as a society of the highest ideals and one whose influence he hoped would contradict many of the lawless tendencies which appear to be creeping into our national life. Admiral Reeves then told the part which air strategy will play in forthcoming wars showing that by the use of scouting planes the navy can locate and determine the correct range for the ships to shell the enemy when the target would be out of sight: that by the use of bombing planes the gunfire could be supplemented, and these ships would also have their place in defense work. The Admiral thrilled his audience with a tale of how these ships were launched in the air at a northern port when the Secretary of Navy was reviewing the fleet. Immediately following the flight a huge fog bank suddenly drifted in obliterating the landing ship. The airplanes were immediately recalled and were able to land upon the deck of the vessel, seconds apart, without mishap. He said that this training could not be obtained /without the use of carefully selected men who must be given actual sea duty and that the location of an air or dirigible base not in direct connection with the navy operations would be futile. Admiral Reeves in conclusion connected his story of modern warfare with the advancement over the say when the constitution was framed, marveling that this constitution could endure through all time to be adequate in this present age as it was at its making. Following the admiral’s address Mrs. Smith thanked him as one of the society’s most sincere, loyal and patriotic friends and called the assembly to its feet for a rising vote of thanks. Mrs. J. B. Bostwick, chairman of the banquet committee was thanked for the efficient services of her committee.

Constitution Week to be observed by Patriotic Groups Thursday, September 11, 1930

San Diego Union Page: 8 Constitution Week promises to be well celebrated in San Diego this year. Besides the dinner to be given on Constitution Day, next Wednesday, at 6:30 at the Athletic Club, by San Diego Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution under the chairmanship of Mrs. J. B. Bostwick, the Sons of the American Revolution are sponsoring a Patriotic Service to be held Sunday Evening at 7:30 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Eighth and C Streets. Through their President, Brig. Gen William D. Beach they have invited the Daughters of the American Revolution and other patriotic societies to attend. All patriotic organizations attending are requested to meet at 7:15 and enter the church as a body.
