Building Better Communities (BBC) is an immersive learning program at Ball State University that aims to provide students with hands-on experiences that improve local communities. Modeling urban form, an architecture specific BBC course, was a collaborative living building challenge that attempted to develop idealized, sustainable communities. The development process involved research of precedent studies as well as economic and environmental metric calculations. The major goal of the project was to provide a final visual and measurable example of a sustainable community.

The Cooper Lighting Source Awards is an annual lighting design competition that seeks to discover new design solutions for Cooper products. Any new or existing project could be used as the canvas for Cooper fixtures. A private studio in a mixed-use Chicago loft was selected for the challenge. The loft, designed with brutalist and deconstructivist architecture as the inspiration, allowed for the creative use of fixtures to emphasize the unique architectural details of the defined spaces.

The ASID Repurpose for Today national student competition 2012 called for the creative use of architecture and design to help address current social crises. Rubble Revival sought to address the issues of crime and societal disintegration that exist in Gary, IN. Majora Carter, an urban revitalization strategist from New York, and Richard Daley, former mayor of Chicago helped inspire the goals of this project. Both Carter and Daley recognize the positive effect that “greening” communities can have on distressed areas. Channeling this mentality, the project focused on the reuse and revitalization of an abandoned baseball field on Gary’s south side. The field would become community gardens and the existing structures would transform into a food bank and other useful storage facilities.
