STAFF ACHIEVMENTS:

One of the reasons for such a creditable co-curricular performance of the

students would undoubtedly be the effort of the faculty to strive and become

role models by constantly upgrading their knowledge and qualifications.

This facet is amply proved by the fact that we have added 7 (seven) PhDs to

our faculty list - 4 (four) by way of new faculty members joining us and

3(three) more by existing faculty members successfully obtaining this laurel.

This year was the 14th consecutive year for Infosys as our Day-1 hirer. It is

pertinent to note here that despite a significantly depressant placement mood

in the market and a substantial drop in Infosys hiring from all Tier-1

institutions, our numbers has been enviably good. This also is the 4th

consecutive year IVTL have been to our campus for hiring. This clearly

reflects the quality of our students as well as the trust that has been

developed because of the transparency in our interactions with the various

Corporate entities.

As of today our students have participated in 56 placement drives (on

campus as well as off campus pooled drives). Almost 75% of the eligible

12

Page 14: SARANATHAN COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING

after the exams, or an internship being converted into a job, or a job offer

after successful completion of a training session.

In addition to the above we have another 49 students awaiting either dates

for their final rounds or results of the final round.

We actively support students to take up extended internships that generally

culminate in placement in that organisation. We have currently 71 students

I would like to thank the Management of this institution in general and

our Secretary in particular for giving me this opportunity to be part of our joint

efforts to elevate the status and Brand image of this noble Educational

Institution. Even though it has been mentioned before, I would be failing in my

duty if I do not record here the significant contribution that has been made, by

our Late Director, Prof. V. Nagarajan, towards making this institution a true

temple of learning. At this juncture I would like to reiterate that the best way to

pay homage to our “Bhishmaacharya” would be to follow without fail the

various nuggets of advice that he gave us individually as well as collectively. I

must also thank the students, the biggest stakeholder here, for maintaining

discipline and for the love and respect that they shower on me. The members of

the staff both teaching and non-teaching deserve my sincere thanks for their

University examinations every year.

2

I am very proud to announce that among B.E., B.Tech., M.E., MBA, MCA,

2016 batch of students 716 have successfully completed their course.

It is again a matter of pride and pleasure to report that among 716

Graduates, 33 of them have passed with distinction and 683 have passed

with 1st class.

The future for better academic performance looks very bright thanks to

86.5% in the results announced for the examinations conducted in Nov/Dec

2016. I must make a special mention here that my confidence of a better

future academic performance is based on the fact that we have an excellent

result of 90.25% in the first semester.

Co-curricular activities:

In addition to maintaining its mission of providing a quality academic

education the institution urges and facilitates the students to participate in other

co-curricular activities like seminars, symposiums and paper presentations. Due

to paucity of time we are not able to cover all such achievements but would like

to list a few significant student contributions:

Mechanical students assembled from scrap a car that was adapted for use by

physically challenged persons. This vehicle named “Maati yosi” went on to

get an award from ICT Academy as a socially conscious project.

Our Final year EEE students exhibited their Project titled “IOT based smart

village” to the President of the Nation at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

A competition to develop mobile based applications titled “Appmania’2k17”

was conducted by the department of CSE & IT. After 14 hours of

continuous Application development 55 different “Apps” were created.

A final year EEE student won a gold medal in the 47th All India Student

Design competition-2016 conducted by National Design and Research

Forum, Institution of Engineer’s (India)".

“BICOPTER” a project by our III year ICE students was selected for

NIYANTRA project competition. This competition is conducted by National

Instruments Bangalore. This project also got selected for National level

project competition named “Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Innovation Ecosystem” .

17

Page 19: SARANATHAN COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING

Projects by our II year ICE students have been recognized and sponsored for

further development by TEXAS Instruments, Bangalore with a grant of Rs

20000/=

The students of Mechanical Engineering Won the State Level Best Project

Award in the event organized by the International Society for Scientific

Research and Development (ISSRD).

As part of the Institution’s effort to make the students more acceptable to the

corporate, we conduct and support the students to acquire internationally

recognised certificates in various areas of the branch. This year we have had

5 staff and 29 students CLAD certified by National Instruments, 100

students by AUTODESK, 38 students for CREO, 155 students as Microsoft

Technology Associates, 36 students as VMware data centre technicians, 11

students for JAVA Oracle Academy and 377 students under the Infosys

Campus Connect Foundation Programme

It is indeed gratifying for me to document the fact that all the above

achievements by the students in the co-curricular field have been possible

because of the tremendous and selfless contributions by the faculty member

concerned and I take this opportunity to thank all of them for their

exemplary effort and request them to continue this good work so that the

students of this institution will achieve higher and nobler laurels.

STAFF ACHIEVMENTS:

This laudable achievement by the students in the curricular and co-curricular

activities was possible only because of the dedicated band of faculty

members who also constantly strive to improve their own knowledge and

qualifications. This facet is amply proved by the fact that we have added 10

(ten) PhD’s to our faculty list this year and 6 (six) of our faculty members

have submitted/registered for their PhDs.. In addition our faculty members

have submitted 118 articles in peer reviewed journals and presented 40

papers in various International technical conferences. Faculty members were

participated in various 155 technical and non-technical programmes like

FDP, workshops etc., The College has organised 5 training programs such as

FDP, workshops, conference etc., for teaching and non teaching of various

institutions.

PLACEMENT:

This year was the 13th consecutive year for Infosys as our Day-1 hirer. It is

pertinent to note here that despite significant drop in Infosys hiring from

Tier-1 institutions we did not have any major change in the numbers of

Infosys placed students. This reflects the quality of our students as well as

the trust that has been developed because of the transparency in our

interactions with the Corporate.

As of today 70% (288 out of 418) of the eligible candidates have a job offer

on hand. This offer could be a job offer to join after the exams, or an

internship being converted into a job or a job offer after successful

completion of a training session for a short duration.

In addition to the above we have another 138 students awaiting either dates

for their final rounds or results of the final round.

We have currently 43 students on paid internship.

Training:

We had invited Mr Anand from Mobius, Mr Chandrasekhar from Paytm,,

Mr .Lakshmi Narashiman from Brakes India and Mr Anand from Camfil to

give a special training to the final year students to enhance their skills in

GD sessions and HR Interviews.

In addition, a special session for Java training by Mr Vijay – a corporate

trainer in Java, was arranged to give the students an opportunity to enhance

their performance in the technical interviews.

Mr Komatsu of Word Applications USA and Mr Cheran CEO of IVTL

delivered a lecture on “ Software Engineering as a profession”

Sports:

The students of our college have shown consistent performance in all sports

events and brought repute to the institution.

38 students of our college emerged winners in various sports at Anna

University Zone 13 level in the year 2016-17.

Our Athletics men team emerged as Runners-up in the Anna University

Zone 13.

Overall, our college secured third position in the Anna University Zone 13

To crown all the above achievements our institution had the proud privilege

of hosting on behalf of TDVA the 43rd State Level Inter District volley Ball

tournament for the juniors (both men and women). Apart from arranging

boarding and lodging for all the participants, coaches and referees, we

prepared a National tournament level Volleyball grounds at our cost.

Alumni Meet:

To bridge the gap between the industry and academia, the college arranges a

branch wise Alumni Meet with very encouraging results.

The alumni regularly visit the campus, address and motivate the present

final and pre-final year students and keep them informed of the industry

expectations and developments.

Such alumni meets have also generated potential corporate hirers for the

institution.

Others:

Over and above everything that has been mentioned we also had the following

significant functions in the institution.

The institution continued with the tradition of having an endowment lecture

to commemorate the birth day of its Founder Vidya Seva Rathnam K

Santhanam.

20

Page 22: SARANATHAN COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING

6

Our talented students along with the faculty members participating in the

“Margazhi Mahotsavam” gave us the feeling of celebrating Thiagaraja

Aaradhanai in our campus.

With a view to make the campus greener Tree plantation drives were

organised in the college campus by Infosys Eco Club as well as our own

NSS students

I would like to thank the Management of this institution in general and

our Secretary and Director in particular for giving me this opportunity to be part

of our joint efforts to elevate the status and Brand image of this noble

Educational Institution. I must thank the students, the biggest stakeholder here,

for maintaining discipline and for the love and respect that they shower on me.

The members of the staff both teaching and non-teaching deserve my sincere

thanks for their unstinted support.

I am sure with all your support I can safely assure all the stake holders

that we would certainly enhance the premium position that the institution

currently enjoys.

Thank you

The department of Management Studies conducted Lakshya 2016 with participation of more than 300 students from various other colleges.

A significant change in the scenario this year has been the increase in the number of paid internships that the students have taken up. We have currently 40 students undergoing internships in various corporates. These internships will culminate in the students being offered a placement in the company. These students have in fact started earning their stipends as interns even before they graduate.

Placement:

More than 70% of our eligible and willing students of this batch have already been placed and we still have not closed our placement season. Like all other years we would continue to keep in touch with the students on group mail and keep them informed on placement opportunities.

Major segment of our students have been placed in Infosys, IVTL, CES-IT,

Indian Volleyball team was the Chief Guest.

Staff Achievements:

It is a very satisfying fact that faculty members as part of their efforts to

motivate the students to deliver academically, do themselves focus on enhancing

their qualifications. We are proud to mention that the following faculty members

obtained their PhD degrees in their respective fields;

Our learned Dean (R & D), Dr. Y. Venkatramani under his guidance was

and 30 conference publications. Our faculty members also attended 120 Faculty

development programs and/or workshops. The College has organised 14 training

programs such as FDP, workshops, conference etc., for teaching and non teaching

of various institutions.

One of the proudest moments of our college was when our consistent

efforts were duly recognised and we were awarded “the best overall LabView

Academy Partner Award” by National Instruments Inc. What is significant to note

is that we have been honoured with this award within the 1st year of our

becoming an academy partner of National Instruments.
