program• 57 had questionable costs or
unsubstantiated costs
• Audit of block grant program: Worcester must repay US $2M+
• Hawthorne may owe federal agency $1.4 million
• West Palm Beach must repay HUD $1.67 million
• HUD report questions million spent by Norfolk housing authority
•Approach the audit like your job depends upon it•Because it probably does.
• Be the point of contact– Files– Questions– Requests to speak to staff
• Involve the area office– Have them at the entrance and exit conferences
• Logging the documents that the IG receives
• Take your time when responding– “I’ll get back to you”– Answer all of their questions accurately
• Communication is essential– Make sure that everyone is saying the same thing– Communicate with the Area Office
• Don’t wait until the final report to respond• You can actually learn something
