Description of pilot sites: Lanca dei Francesi quarry BSR 3. Operational and market characteristics
Actual Situation
Peculiarities: The quarry is located within the Po River overbanks, in a flat land occasionally submerged during river floods. The quarry started to operate in 2003. The amount extracted during five years was:1.000.000 m3 of sand and 290.000 m3 of clay. The extraction was made by digging machines. The sand goes to the local or provincial market. The quarry doesn’t produce wastes
The operational status (BSR 1): The quarry is almost completed and its enlargement is planned.
The enlargement plan will involve additional 1.250.000 m3 of sand 250.000 m3 of clay over the next 5 years.
Starting from the present situation RER, Parma Province and the quarry Company designed a project with the following objectives:
- to minimize the environmental and social impacts of the quarry;
- to rebuild a natural near-fluvial area with: a lake, tourist-ecological routes, low-impact farming.

The new project
A good restoration project needs an appropriate digging project
The digging project
Highest digging depth : 12 m from surface
Sinuous shores
Subdivision of digging activity in annual lots
Lowest digging depth : 0 - 2 m from surface
