SAS Recognition Week This week is an opportunity to formally acknowledge and celebrate the work of the members of staff who are classified as SAS. These staff members include our school learning support officers, general assistants and administration staff. In our school we have a large team: Mrs Wann, Mrs Ratnam, Mrs Matchett, Miss Martin, Mrs Brown, Mrs Conley, Mrs Turner, Mrs Henderson, Mrs Hughes, Mrs Frew, Mrs Cotterill, Mr Maloney and Mr Baldock. The teaching staff will be acknowledging the high level of support that these people provide across our school with a special treat on Thursday. SAS staff are the backbone of schools as they support students, the staff and the community in a range of ways – work that often happens behind the scenes and may go unnoticed. Thank you! School Planning and Evaluation The current school planning cycle finishes at the end of this year. On Monday the executive team spent the day learning about the School Excellence Cycle. We will be seeking information from the staff, parents and the students over the next few months as part of an evaluation of our current school plan in order to develop a situational analysis. This situational analysis will provide us with a detailed view of where the school is at now. This will be used to inform the strategic improvement plan for the next four years. We are looking forward to developing a collective vision for our school to ensure that we continue to strive for continual improvement. WEDNESDAY 26 AUGUST, 2020

Skoolbag The Skoolbag console has had a recent upgrade. Please ensure you update the app on your device. Attendance We have been reviewing our attendance monitoring procedures and have made some adjustments to ensure an effective system. From Monday, all attendance will be monitored through our Sentral system. The absence notification form in Skoolbag, that has been previously used by some families to notify of an absence, is no longer active. To notify of an absence in advance, please use email, phone or letter. To explain an absence on the day of the absence, please reply to the SMS. SMS messages are also being sent out for late arrivals. Bike Safety There are a number of students who ride their bikes to school and spend their time outside of school hours riding with their friends. This is a great outdoor activity that promotes physical wellbeing. We have relocated our bike racks to the senior part of the school to accommodate the increase of the use of bikes. The staff have observed, however, some bike behaviour that is unsafe and not complaint with the rules. See below information from Transport NSW. Safe riding Go Together Our Go Together campaign shows bicycle riders and other road users how to respect each other’s space and ensure that everyone stays safe. Safe riding tips • Always wear an approved bicycle helmet, properly fitted and fastened • Always obey the road rules, including traffic lights, stop signs and give way signs • Allow pedestrians a metre of space on shared paths, where possible. • Always travel at a speed that is safe for you and the pedestrians you encounter, especially if you are riding

on a footpath or shared path • When approaching pedestrians, always ring your bell, slow down and prepare to stop and give way • Ride in a predictable manner so that other road users do not have to react suddenly to your movements • Give hand signals when changing lanes or turning left or right • Make yourself visible by wearing bright, light or reflective clothing • Plan your route using quieter streets, bicycle paths or shared paths • Always be in control of your bicycle. It is an offence to ride with both hands off

the handlebars, feet off the pedals or to carry anything that prevents you from having control.

Visible Learning The executive team completed the Evidence Into Action Plan for Visible Learning on Monday. Thank you those families who completed the learning dispositions survey as we have been able to collate this data with the data from the staff and the students to identify the 5 learning dispositions that are most appropriate to the learners at CEPS. This week and next week the whole staff will be defining these and will develop an explicit program to teach these from the start of next year to ensure a common language and expectation of learners across the school. The 5 learning dispositions are: • Brave • Resilient • Imaginative • Adaptable • Self motivated

Mr Larnach will be launching a competition for the students on Thursday to design a character for each of the learning dispositions. The winning design will be on signage across the school. We are looking forward to the imagination that our learners will bring to this task. COVID -19 Updates Thank you once again for the support that the school has received as we strive to manage school operations to ensure alignment with the COVID-19 guidelines. Some changes came into effect last week which was communicated in detail to families on Skoolbag. We urge parents to maintain social distancing at drop off and pick up points and ensure compliance with the rules of the Kiss and Ride zone so that parents can remain in their cars and avoid unnecessary contact. The system of calling the office for late arrivals and early departures is working, but please remember to allow enough time for the staff to gather your child from the classroom and take them to the gate.

We are avoiding activities that involved classes from different stages working together, as per the guidelines. We have ceased CAPA groups which includes choir and the drama group are working in small grade/stage groups. The staff have planned rotational activities this term for sport based on the events of the athletics carnival to provide us with information for end of year sports awards. Students will be completing these in their age groups.

Our peer support program will not be able to run this year nor will the intensive swimming program. We are continuing with two 15 minute assemblies each week to share important information, our Tree of Values focus and to present awards.

Our end of year activities such as the Year 6 Farewell and Kindergarten Orientation are on hold at the moment but the staff are thinking creatively to ensure that the students have the opportunity to experience these milestones in some way. Daffodil Day This Friday August 28, we will be celebrating Daffodil Day. Sadly, we have a few parents in our school community who are undergoing cancer treatment so we thought it would be nice support for these families and have a day in their honour. The students can come to school on Friday dressed in yellow and bring a gold coin that will be donated to the Cancer Council. Our wonderful and creative Leila Finch will have some delicious yellow treats for sale in the canteen. Kindergarten 2021 We are looking forward to meeting all of our new little friends next year in Kinder. We are starting our planning for next year so it is really important that we have all paperwork returned as soon as possible. Have a great week everyone. Keep smiling and stay safe.

Tree of Values This fortnight here at school we are highlighting a new value, Democracy. The definition of democracy is: accepting and promoting the rights, freedoms and responsibilities of being an Australian citizen.

The behaviour focus is, ‘We are positive citizens’. We encourage the students at CEPS to come to school every day prepared to contribute in a positive manner in the classroom and in the playground. Please take the time to discuss what this looks like and sounds like with your children.

Thank you, Michelle Bell & Libby Bailey Values Coordinators

To keep updated with school information download the Skoolbag app. Any information sent through the app is delivered by the school, which includes information on behalf of the P&C. Don’t forget about our ongoing fundraisers:

1. Newcastle Permanent Building Society Introducer Program - For every eligible new home or business loan (over $100 000), Newcastle Permanent will give Charlestown East $600. During the loan application process, you just need to mention our school name.

2. Athletes Foot School Rewards Program - When buying new school shoes, or joggers don’t forget to visit the Athletes Foot. For every pair of shoes purchased our school receives $5.00 when you mention CEPS.

3. Rebel Sport - Ask them to link your membership to CEPS and with each purchase a % goes back to CEPS to spend on anything that Rebel stock. Thank you for all of your continued support Emily Baker P&C committee member

Due to current restrictions our uniform shop will remain closed to the public, all uniform orders will be done through our online shop https://www.charlestown-east-pc.square.site. Orders will be filled Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. Please remember to pop your child’s name and class in the notes section at the checkout. Due to COVID 19 we are experiencing some delays and out of stock issues, we are working hard to keep stock levels up. Don't forget about our beeswax wraps available in a variety of colours and sizes, these are a great idea not only for the environment but to use along with our insulated lunch bags, all available from our online store. As of 1 September 2020 a small price increase will apply to all uniforms. Uniform Committee

We have a busy couple of weeks in our school canteen. This Friday 28 August we will be supporting Daffodil Day. We will have some delicious yellow treats available for counter sales, such as custard cups and pops, mango yoghurt pops and frozen fruit skewers. Next Tuesday 1 September is Fresh Food Tuesday. We will once again be using some delicious produce from our amazing school garden. Fried rice will be on the menu, $4 and available for counter sales only. Save the date – we will have a meal deal on offer on Thursday 24 September, more details will follow in the coming weeks. Leila Finch and the Canteen Committee
