One of my favorite Heilicher moments is the Opening Ceremony, when our eighth graders take our Kindergarteners by the hand and usher them into a new school year under the huppah (canopy). It is a high-spirited

community event filled with the hope and promise of good things to come in the new year. And we have plenty of good things in store.

There are exciting developments in Jewish Life, which is one pillar of our Heilicher ‘20 strategic plan. As you’ll read in this issue, our Judaic Studies and Hebrew programs will be enhanced in significant ways this coming school year. At Heilicher, we are not only developing critical thinkers but also ethical decision makers, and Judaic Studies provides a framework for both.

Two shining examples of Heilicher promise are alumni Emmanuelle and Zachariah Sippy, who have built upon their Heilicher education and are already making a positive difference in their community. You can read in the Alumni section about how they are changing the world. This issue also features Heilicher champions Judy and Jerel Shapiro, who have made Jewish education a philanthropic priority.

The Heilicher community continues to inspire. Welcome to the new year.

Joyfully Jewish

BY ETAN WEISSDirector of Jewish Life and Hebrew

Have you ever seen the face of a child as they have an epiphany and dawn of understanding? The joy is palpable. This kind of pure joy is powerful because it is attached to meaning-making, purposefulness, and a sense of worthwhile accomplishment. Joy in this context is found at the end of hard work, and it is exhilarating.

BUILDING A VIBRANT JEWISH FUTUREAt Heilicher, we are setting the stage for joyful discoveries every day. This is the essence of why we do what we do. We are building a vibrant Jewish future by inspiring confident, competent, and compassionate students who purposefully engage the world through their Jewish lens. We guide students to find joy in their learning as they explore, struggle, and flourish in becoming competent and engaged American Jewish adults.

Our Hebrew and Jewish Studies programs inspire young people to take pride in their Jewish identities, to approach Torah and the study of all Jewish text analytically, and to commit themselves to active tikkun olam, repairing the world.

Our students lovingly investigate, develop, and wrestle with a personal relationship with God and Israel. Our graduates embrace their roles as

members of the Jewish people and as global citizens. Through respectful dialogue, exchange, and a spectrum of shared experiences, students refine their own opinions while developing the critical skills of interacting and coexisting with people of different backgrounds, ideals, and customs.

How do we do this? In short it’s inspirational teachers, an engaging and personally relevant curriculum, and, above all, individualized guidance and attention to the needs of each student.

NEW INITIATIVESThis school year, we will introduce some changes to the program, guided by the Heilicher ‘20 Strategic Plan, that will work towards increasing the efficacy of our Hebrew program, strengthening the breadth and depth of Jewish Studies for all students, and advancing Heilicher’s mission to embody Jewish pluralistic practice and teaching. We will pilot multi-grade Hebrew and Jewish Studies levels to better meet student needs, to challenge them, and to drive their learning forward.

Heilicher has also embarked on the second phase of our implementation of the Hadar Standards for Fluency in Jewish Text and Practice, a set of standards that has garnered national attention for being at the forefront of crafting and delivering extraordinary and inspiring Jewish education. Through clearly articulated definitions of competency in the areas of Bible, Rabbinics, tefillah (prayer), Jewish Practice (holidays and rituals), Israel Studies, and Modern Hebrew, we are designing grade-specific and measurable benchmarks to ensure students’ progress in each of these areas.

NEW MIDDLE SCHOOL JEWISH STUDIES CURRICULUMAdditionally, Heilicher is leading the field of Jewish education by building a new Middle School Jewish Studies curriculum around engaging in the world through a Jewish lens. Jewish education has traditionally focused on rituals and prayer, and while we do provide these foundational elements in the lower grades, our middle school curriculum transitions to the study of personal, inspirational relevance and practice: What does this

mean for me? How do I articulate my values through a Jewish lens? How do I actualize these values?

The working title for this course is “Pursuing Justice Text Intensive” wherein, utilizing Jewish texts and Heilicher’s core values, students will learn Jewish values related to ethics, involvement, and pursuing a just society. Through their studies, students will develop a personal ethos on why and how to pursue justice through a Jewish lens and based on Jewish values. Students will then choose a particular topic area and be mentored through a Change Initiative project to strive for

Heilicher Core ValuesThe Heilicher experience is built on the foundation of 10 Jewish core values which come to life in the hallways, classrooms, and all-school activities.

“All Jews are responsible for one another.” (Shavu’ot 39A)Our community is one. We respect each other’s differences.

“And you shall love your neighbor as yourself.” (Leviticus 19:18)We should treat others the way we want to be treated, with caring, kindness and respect.

“Guard your tongue from evil.” (Psalms 34:14)We must be careful how we speak and what we say to each other. Words can be kind and caring or hurtful and painful to others.

“And if not now, when?” (Avot 1:14)The time to learn is now, the time to help another person is now; the time to care for our environment is now; because if we put it off, it may never happen.

“And you shall not wrong, nor oppress a stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt.” (Exodus 22:20)We must be welcoming of strangers for once we too were strangers. It is a mitzvah to welcome guests.

“We chose Heilicher because it could provide cultural and language continuity for the kids, as we are all Israeli and

speak Hebrew at home. The kids are happy at a school that supports this dimension of their identity.”

—Heilicher parent Amit Yahav

Heilicher Core ValuesThe Heilicher experience is built on the foundation of 10 Jewish core values which come to life in the hallways, classrooms, and all-school activities.

“A mitzvah leads to another mitzvah and a wrongdoing leads to another wrongdoing.” (Avot 4:2)When we do something to help another or perform a mitzvah, it leads to other good deeds. When we do something wrong, it leads to other wrong things as well.

“And you should judge the entirety of a person favorably (kindly).” (Avot 1:6)Give people the benefit of the doubt and don’t jump to conclusions.

“It is not up to you to finish the job. Neither are you free to withdraw from it.” (Avot 2:16)People cannot do things completely on their own. We need to work together. Just because we think we cannot finish something, doesn’t mean we should not start and try to complete the task. Words can be kind and caring or hurtful and painful to others.

“The world stands on three things: the study of Torah, service to God and deeds of loving kindness.” (Avot 1:2)We value the study of Torah, prayer and acts of loving-kindness; helping and caring for each other so we become better individuals and a more respectful community.

“Make for yourself a mentor and get yourself a friend.” (Avot 1:6)It is important to respect and learn from our teachers and our friends. We also need a good friend to help us in our learning.

“A highlight of our Pesah evening was the sharing of our daughter’s ritual object [created at Heilicher]... It now sits displayed among our other heirloom ritual objects and is looked at admiringly. She felt such pride in sharing her accomplishment among our guests.

The benefits of her involvement in this program will be felt for years to come.”—Heilicher parent Liba Zweigbaum Herman

real, lasting change that works to solve and resolve their issue.

These are just a few of the initiatives to deepen the impact of our Jewish Studies and Hebrew program that will adeptly prepare our graduates to be the Jewish leaders of the future, poised to pass on Jewish values to the next generation.

One of our core values is Lo Aleha, “It is not up to you to finish the job. Neither are you free to withdraw from it.” (Avot 2:16.) While we know our work will never be done, we can all rest assured that our ultimate, attainable goal will be realized: joyfully Jewish students who are confident, competent, and compassionate engaged citizens. Our true joy is guiding their process.

BY GIGI S., MOLLY S., AND LAUREN V. (HEILICHER ‘18)

Heilicher is a great school for many reasons. We can’t fit them all in this limited number of words, but we will try. At Heilicher, we have a special bond that makes us a kehilah/ קהילה (which means community). We build our kehilah in many ways, including weekly Friday all-school lunch. Last year everyone was assigned a table with at least one person from each grade and a teacher. Most students will stay at the same table together for all nine years at Heilicher. All-school lunch is one way our community is developed.

There are lots of advantages to being in a small school that help us learn and make us a stronger kehilah. Teachers care about us and know us individually. They ask about our families and are genuinely interested in our lives. We get lots of one-on-one time with teachers so we can learn better, and it is a lot more like the teachers are talking to us instead of at us.

Not only do we have better relationships with our teachers, we also have better relationships with our peers. At Heilicher we create relationships that will last a lifetime. There were 23 kids in our eighth grade class and everybody had been there since kindergarten. In seventh grade, we went to everyone’s Bar/Bat Mitzvah, and it was great to see each other every weekend and party together. This helped our kehilah grow strong.

At Heilicher we get to create unique and fun learning opportunities, especially

as we get older. Our seventh-grade project was a debate that focuses on current issues. In eighth grade we did a Capstone project to research a problem in society and try to create awareness about the issue. During our projects we use skills we learned in classes such as Science, Social Studies, Language Arts, and Jewish Studies.

What we do in seventh and eighth grade prepares us for high school. In science, we’re not just given a textbook, we are taught strategies to help us understand it. In Judaic Studies we have deep conversations about Torah and how it

relates to the world. In Hebrew we learn words from songs and stories along with grammar. In almost every class we write and write and write. Heilicher students are able to create lifelong relationships and go beyond the basics with our learning.

Teachers care about us and know us individually. They

ask about our families and are genuinely interested in our lives.

Heilicher Highlights

CLOCKWISE, STARTING TOP LEFT

Mike Miller, Joel Carter, Sue Ostfield, Aimee Orkin, and Charles Lieberman enjoyed an evening celebrating Heilicher at the Annual Benefit reception at Beth El Synagogue in March.

Heilicher eighth grader Gigi S. explains the process of creating a life-size, interactive tzedakah box. The Tzedakah Box project was a school-wide, collaborative STEAM activity that challenged students to design and build based on certain parameters. The seventh- and eighth-grade tzedakah tree was revealed at the Annual Benefit.

Four friends showed their team spirit at the school-wide Maccabi Games in June. Four color teams participated in friendly competition in sports and outdoor games.

A happy band of Heilicher families and employees marched in several parades this summer, including Grand Old Day in St. Paul.

Colorful sea creatures sang and danced in the seventh- and eighth-grade musical, Little Mermaid, Jr. Students not only took to the stage, but designed the costumes, built sets, ran the lights, and produced a documentary film about the experience.

Heilicher honored retiring faculty Elly Becker, Hani Galili, and Yefet Zadaka with gifts at the 2018 Annual Meeting. We wish them all a very happy retirement!

Zachariah Sippy graduated from Heilicher in 2014 and is heading to Princeton University this fall. His sister and current high school student Emmanuelle attended Heilicher through sixth grade, after which their family moved to Lexington, Kentucky. It was a delight to learn how they are involved in Jewish life in Kentucky and how their Jewish education at Heilicher shaped their current path.

Q. TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR OWN JEWISH BACKGROUND. HOW DID IT INFLUENCE YOUR CURRENT PATH?Zachariah: Our dad is Rabbi David Wirtschafter, now the rabbi at Temple Adath Israel in Lexington, Kentucky. He was the Rabbi-in-Residence at HMJDS when we first came to Minneapolis in 2008, and we were jointly affiliated with Beth El Synagogue and Temple Israel. Being a rabbi’s kid definitely helped shape my Judaism.

Emmanuelle: Although I love songs sung in services and making challah every week, the emphasis on pursuing justice has influenced me the most.

Q. WHAT IS SPECIAL TO YOU ABOUT HEILICHER AND YOUR JEWISH DAY SCHOOL EXPERIENCE? E: One of my happiest memories is making peanut butter sandwiches on VOICE night every year. Those sticky gloves and dirty t-shirts were the foundation of my activism interests. Every Heilicher teacher is committed to their students, whether nurturing, comedic, or serious—they are all transformative.

Z: The Heilicher teachers that affected me the most were Lynn Slobodien (5/6 Language Arts teacher) and Robert Portnoe (Rabbinic Studies). Mr. Portnoe’s eighth-grade Judaics class still remains one of the best (and most challenging) courses that I have ever taken. The small discussion-style nature forced us to improve as readers, writers, and thinkers. In fifth grade, my friend Isaac Wert and I established a school newspaper, the HMJDS Roar. This foray into writing, editing, management, and journalism has proven to be influential.

Q. WHAT DOES YOUR JEWISH INVOLVEMENT LOOK LIKE POST-HEILICHER?E: Currently, I am the Social Action Vice President of my NFTY chapter and attend regional events along with services. Weekly,

I help fourth and fifth graders prepare for their B’nei Mitzvah and will be in Confirmation class next year. I wrote two articles this year, which center around the Jewish values I learned at HMJDS and came to fruition because of Jewish outlets. “We Too” was published in the American Jewish World, Women of Reform Judaism Blog, and Jgirls magazine. “We Remain Slaves: A Free People Beholden to Righteousness” was published on the Reform Judaism Blog and in our local Federation magazine.

Z: I have published articles and worked with media groups like The Atlantic, Minneapolis Star Tribune, Lexington Herald-Leader, and others. I have served as the President of my temple’s NFTY group and on the general board of NFTY Ohio-Valley, in addition to actively raising my voice regarding anti-semitism in Kentucky.

Q. TELL US WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU.E: As a sophomore at Henry Clay High School, I am on the leadership of the Prichard Committee Student Voice Team, which seeks to improve Kentucky Schools and amplify thenarratives of students who are all too often unheard. I partner with Unlearn Fear + Hate, an organization that uses art to foster community. I help them plan interfaith events as well as translating into Hebrew. These projects are communal efforts of tikkun olam (repairing the world) that also fulfill me personally.

Z: I will attend Princeton University in the fall, likely studying religion or history. I spent much of my high school career as a debater, and as a member of the Prichard Committee Student Voice Team, where I have worked to involve students in both the worlds of education policy and practice in Kentucky.

Q. ANY CLOSING THOUGHTS FOR THE HEILICHER COMMUNITY?Z: Heilicher teachers challenged me to be my best self while remaining true to my values and character. I am grateful for the small classes, peers, devoted teachers, and hard-working administration.

E: The HMJDS community of parents, peers, and teachers taught me the merits of hard work and to love learning. Heilicher did not set a trajectory for what I would do, but rather why I would choose to do it.

A few parting words excerpted from eighth-grade graduation essays:

“For capstone, I took on the topic of social media, technology, and teens. While students can of course look at their issue as black and white, our teachers and mentors challenged us to go deeper, ignore assumptions, and figure out what we believe, and why we believe it.”

—Noa G.

“At Heilicher, I shared many life changing experiences with my friends, and learned how to be a better human being.”

Legacy Donor Spotlight

Pillars of the Minneapolis Jewish community, Deera and Al Tychman (z”l) were supporters of Jewish education and were active

in many local organizations including the Minneapolis Jewish Federation, Beth El Synagogue, the Sabes Jewish Community Center, and Hadassah. It is no surprise, then, that their daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Jerel Shapiro, are dedicated and generous supporters of Jewish day school education and inspiring examples of lifelong Jewish learning.

Judy and Jerel sent their four children to Jewish day school (including: Heilicher, Torah Academy, Akiva High School, and American Hebrew Academy in North Carolina), and recognize the critical importance of continuing to strengthen day schools.

“After all, Jewish day school education is the most important component of creating a Jewish future,” maintains Jerel. The Shapiros have funded a number of initiatives at Heilicher which have transformed the landscape of Jewish education at the school.

In 2015, in memory of Judy’s parents, the Shapiros created the Deera and Al Tychman (z”l) Judaic Learning and T’filah Center to serve as a fulcrum of Jewish life and learning in the Heilicher Middle School. Known colloquially as the “Tychman Beit Midrash,” this Center provides a space for students to study, pray, and gather for Jewish learning and programming. Last year, Judy and

Jerel funded Heilicher’s participation in Mechon Hadar—a national program through which the school will develop eighth-grade fluency standards and grade-level benchmarks for Jewish learning, tefillah /prayer, and practice. The program helps schools formulate a portrait of a graduate that has acquired the skills, mastered the content, and cultivated a commitment to the future of Judaism.

In addition to being active in Congregation Darchei Noam, the Minneapolis Jewish Federation, and other local Jewish organizations, the Shapiros have grown increasingly involved as leaders and volunteers in the Heilicher community. Jerel served a term on the Heilicher Board of Trustees, and and Judy volunteers regularly in the dining room, main office, and library.

“Heilicher is a tremendously nurturing and supportive environment for students and families,” says Judy. “The teachers really care about the kids and do so much to make sure they are known and valued.”

Last fall, the Shapiros decided to make a legacy gift to Heilicher, choosing to support the school in perpetuity through an endowment distribution from their estate. “We both think that Heilicher is mission-critical,” Jerel says. “The community should join together and get behind Heilicher, which is our best opportunity to grow future Minneapolis leaders and provide a deeper Jewish experience for kids.”

The Shapiros are hopeful that their support will help make Jewish day school tuition more affordable to families. A particular priority to the Shapiros is serious Jewish content, so they are excited that their gifts, both current and future, will further enhance the breadth and depth of Heilicher’s Jewish Studies program.

To learn about including Heilicher in your current giving or legacy gift planning, please contact Institutional Advancement Director Rebecca Skelton at 952.381.3503 or [email protected].

Todah rabah (thank you) to Rose and Matt Horovitz (pictured), who served as 2018 Annual Fund Parent Co-Chairs. Also we extend deep gratitude to 2018 Annual Fund Grandparent Co-Chairs Susan and Mike Horovitz and Bea Johnson. With their leadership and generous family match on new parent and grandparent gifts, Heilicher raised $360,000 for the Annual Fund. We are grateful for their leadership and excited to welcome Rose as a new member of the Heilicher Board of Trustees.

HEILICHER 2018 ANNUAL BENEFITThank you to the more than 400 guests who attended the Annual Benefit honoring Suzanne Fenton and Dan Lieberman on March 15 at Beth El Synagogue. It was inspiring to hear from our honorees about the passion for the school that grew as their children attended Heilicher. Suzanne and Dan received the Ner Tamid Award, a recognition given to those who show exemplary commitment and leadership to the school.

Dan’s parents, Sheila and Steve Lieberman, served as our Honorary Co-Chairs and spoke about the importance of maintaining a vibrant Jewish community and Jewish education’s key role in that pursuit. The Benefit raised nearly $310,000 from our generous community, fueling Heilicher’s rigorous and growing academic program. This year’s Fund-a-Need raised close to $40,000 in gifts to support youth arts programming in partnership with Sabes JCC. We are so grateful to our community.
