From ancient times women from all countries engaged art ofembroidering. Hand crafted items were used on clothes, householdand religious items. Ability to craft in general, and to stitch in particularhelped women to gain respect of the society and made a good livingout of it. It was a well respected art and unique opportunity to bringcreativity to ordinary life.

Modern woman is no longer confined to housework. She can be a very successful leader and professional onone hand, and she can also dedicate her talents to herfamily. Satin embroidery survived many centuries and it isby no means redundant in modern life. In fact embroideryopens unique opportunity to relief stress of modern lifeand take a deep breath of fresh air from source ofphysical and spiritual powers that is hidden in everyperson’s subconscience.

Modem psychotherapy uses handcrafts in searchfor new ways of restoring inner harmony. Satin stitchingis one of the best ways to relax and on another handspend time productively engaging in useful in andmodem form of art.

This style often referred todifferently such as “art embroidery”,“satin stitch”, “free styleembroidery” and others. The namesmight be different but they all meanthe same thing - beautiful anduniversal stitching as form of art.

Satin stitching is best compared with colourpencils drawing. Every child tried that kind of draw-ing and even though you might be called grown-upnow, and probably have your own kids, you musthave intuitive memories of how to fill sketch withcolour paint. This is one of the reasons why satinstitch is so accessible, even to children.

Using ready made design sketch and step by step guides you will be able tosuprise your relatives and friends with great art masterpieces made by you!

Instead of colour pencils you willneed to use coloured threads andneedles, and instead of paper you willuse fabric. Design will need to be trans-ferred to fabric and then “painted” withthreads. Everything is reall that simple!

Designs with 2 stars will requiresome experience, but even with these

only 2 types of stitches will allow you to achievegreat looking results. I need about 2 hours tocreate this model.

Its a myth that stitching takes lots of time and requires significant effort! Well, it might be true to a degreefor cross-stitching, however satin stitch is different!

You will not need any special fabrics to satin stitch on and primary skills can be easily acquired. Apartfrom desire to stitch and accuracy with needle you will need to familiarise yourself with two main stitches.

A few of our designs are shown on the following pictures

Designs sketches can be doenvery quickly.

According to our calculationssatin stitching of a ready made stepby step design takes no more time

than cross-stitching the same model. The differencein looks, especially at close distance, will beunforgettable! This rose took me about 4 hours.

Designs marked with 1 star are the mostaccessible and recommended for beginners.

These designs are meant to be done using

One of the major satin stitchbenefits is that designs areuniversal and can be applied tomultiple items such as clothes ofvarious fabrics, portraits ordecorative patches for knitwear.

Each and every of our designs fits well clothes andportraits. You will be able to create great works oneafter another! Satin stitching requires the following tools: embroidery hoop or frame, needlesand markers for image transfer to fabric.

Stretch the fabric in an embroidery hoop or frame toprevent puckering. The choice of hoop depends on yourpreferences and budget. Generally small designs arebest done with hoops of 12-25 sm (~ 5'’ - 10'’) indiameter. Hoops can be used for different types ofstitching and it helps to have a few of them with varyingdiameters.

Page 7: Satin Stitch Embroidery

2

There are a few types ofsitting frames with embroideryhoops. Sitting frames withround hoops (picture on theleft) are very convinient, asthey can be used under anglethat suits you, but more expen-sive.

Large square frames (seepicture on the right) can beused to create portraits, pillows, decorative panels. Ifyou are a beginner then youshould find small hand hoopssufficient.

Pets love to be closewhen you engage inhandcraft activities. Forexample my cat Mishaalways finds way to getcomfortable near me.

This is when youmight appreciate value ofa sitting frame as it willprevent your pet fromgrabbing your work andrunning away with it.

Page 8: Satin Stitch Embroidery

Satin stitching will requireneedles of 3 - 5 sm (1.2'’ - 2.2'’)size.Small needles can be used forfinishing strokes, medium size forstitching of flowers and long needleswill help to create beautiful largeworks such as portraits.

Needles are best kept in safeplace in a needle pillow kept faraway from kids and playful pets.

Satin stitching is done on an outline of design. You can increase or de-crease actual size of design as you wish using your favourite photocopyingmachine. Once you happy with the size of the design you will need to create itsoutline on material that you will use for stitching using special markers (transferpencils).

Some of the markers will allow you to remove design trace with wet pieceof fabric while the other will stay permanently so be careful. ou can also takeadvantage of special hot iron transfer pencils that can be used to create traceof the design.

Vast majority of designs that you can pur-chase from our website at www.anna-craft.comwere made using great threads by Bestex.

Ideal threads for satin stitching aremade by Bestex and Anchor. Thesethreads have wondeful colours and itseasy to stitch with them.

Anchor make threads thatare ideal for satin stitching.Multiple shades of colour allowto fit them easily with any typeof fabric.

Easyness of use of threadsmade by Anchor make themone of the top choices for satinstitching.

Page 10: Satin Stitch Embroidery

Threads made by the Chinese firmwhose logo is shown on the picture canalso be used with great success. Those red flowers on our bright-yellowrobe with were made using thesethreads.

2

Threads made by Indianmanufacturers are generallydense and volumetric. Somefirms there make threads withlight colours.

Page 11: Satin Stitch Embroidery

Some firms in India made threads withvery bright and saturated colours. This isoften a speciality of firms that product them.

You can see samples of some of thosethreads with logos of firms producing them.

3

Funny pictures and decorations will benefit fromthreads that change colour. This makes even simpledesigns very noticeable. The best manufacturersof this type of threads are Bestex, Anchor and DMC.

This funny card did not require much effort. Brightcolours and smooth gradient colours were achievedthanks to threads.Similar designs made with these threads look greatand can be done with great ease even by a child!

Page 12: Satin Stitch Embroidery

Metallic threads can be used for stitching ofdetails and edges of designs. For examplethe picture below shows how this threadwas used for stitching of flower stamens andthe picture on the right shows how threadswere used for edging.

Silk threads give great reflection. Thanks to silk even the most simplisticstitching using Japanese style (see picture on the left) look mysteriouslybeautiful. If you can stitch using silk threads then you can use appropriately colouredthreads for stitching for all designs offered on our website. Bear in mindhowever that some thin silk threads might not be durable and it isrecommended to use thicker silk threads when stitching on jeans fabric.

Page 13: Satin Stitch Embroidery

Cross-stitching requires special fabric, but its not the case with satin stitch!

Modern textile industrymanufacturers a lot of natural andsynthetic fabrics. Any fabric can beused as the basis for satin stitch solong as it does not have brightcolores

Any non-stretchable fabric can be used forsatin stitching! For example rich palette ofartificial satin provides great choice of coloursfor stitching!

Synthetic satin looks great with jeans style ofclothes. Stitching with opaque cotton threadsyou will create very interesting effect as if yourstitching is flying over blinking fabric.

Natural non-painted fabrics are very much like painter’scanvas. You can stitch on it using any colours and it will lookgreat! Naturally looking colours are always in fashion!

A serviette made of unpainted natural flax can alsobe made look great with satin stitch.

Serviettes made of unpainted natural flaxallow for your fantasy to run wild. You will needto choose threads that stand out nicely on col-oured background.

This small piece of funnily painted natural flaxbenefits from satin stitched flowers, it begs to be at-tached to some knitwear!

This top made from atlas was stitched inJapanese style with silk threads. It featuresdual composition based on evening tonethreads with additional silver thread createdusing only border stitch! It looks great buttechnologically it was not that hard to do. On the picture on the left you can see overallview of the top, and on the picture below youcan see close up image of the composition.Take my word for it — in the evening thiscloth looks beautiful!

Do you think that satin stitching is much harder than other types of stitching? This is not the case and this technique is accessible even to kids! Just have a look atfirst steps that are no harder than what you had to do in school to learn how to write. The very first stitch is called border stitch. It allows to create raised edge that is similarto automated machine stitching. This type of stitch can be used for many purposesstarting from attaching decorative patches to elegant Japanese style stitching. Accuracy is the most important skill you will need to learn. Try making stitches of thesame length, with the same angle and try to locate them as close to each other aspossible. Your hands will get used to making accurate stitches without thinking muchabout it much like you write or type on a computer. Once you gain accuracy in borderstitch you will be able to create beautiful works of art!

Page 18: Satin Stitch Embroidery

Designs made with border stitch are very simpleand at the same time they look. In the list of our prod-

ucts they are marked with 1 star denoting beginner’s skilllevel. The main skill requirement is that your hand should getused to making even stitches with the same angle. If you started stitching only recently then try not to stress yourwrists and eyes. Soon you will learn how to stitch in relaxedfashion and thats when you will start enjoying it!

Border stitch can be used tocreate any designs so long as theydon’t require smooth change ofcolours. This technique is also useful

for small works. Have a look at these kids shorts -all stitchings on it were done using border stitch.Front and back pockets, funny fishes, letters andunderwater plants, stones and bubbles — all ofthem look great but they did not take much effortto do as well!

Our designs offer step by step instructions onhow to do border stitches. Have a look at the pic-tures of a rose and a fish. You can clearly see howneedle pierces the fabric and thread forms smoothline. Have a look at steps required to stitch this rose andyou will understand how easy it actually is. You canfind more designs on our website at www.anna-craft.com where you can find great designs tailored toborder stitch.

Border stitch is often used to start and finish complex designs that require other techniques. Itsability to create raised edges helps to create volumetric feel to your work. Simple designs can bedone using just border stitch.

Border stitch is done using single needle move. Needle should pierce fabric in two places as

shown on picture. If you want to create smart looking stitching then you will need to make stitches asclose to each other as you can. Have a look at the pictures below - border stitch there looks verysimilar to machine made stitching, however handcraft is much better as its filled with its creatorscharm and human warmth.

Still not sure you can succeed at border stitch? Don’t believe you can move away fromcross stitch? Have a look at real results made by different people!

This work was done by a young man. He is25 years old and his is the geologist. His workrequires him to use big instruments that neverincluded needles! I asked him to try to stitch firsttime in his life and have a look what he achieved. On the left you can see his work in real life size, and on the right you see it magnified 4 times. You

can see that all stitches are very accurate, and it was done by a man!It takes very little time and training to have your hands doing stitchesautomatically with the same angle and length.

This work was done by a 38 year old woman who neverstitched before. Although she did some basic needlework suchas to sew buttons to her son’s clothes, she never engaged inneedlecrafts.

On the magnified picture you can see that her stitches are nearly correct withsome slight errors in their angles. That’s a very good result for a first timer! Onthe left you can see her work in its real life size.

And now have a look at my own work: can you spotthe difference? There aren’t many! Thanks to long practicemy hands are now used create stitches of the same lengthand angle quickly and accurately, which is why my stitchesshow more accurate representation of the design. You canachieve same quality after good practice doing 2-3 works!

All satin stitch designs should be done step by step, from the firstto the last stitch. Inner parts of flowers, leafs and many other designsrequie special technique that we call inside satin stitch. Unlike borderstitch it requires two needle moves.

The flowers design that you cansee on the atlas top was createdusing satin stitch. Inside stitchesallowed to create natural flower lookand feel.

Inside stitches in the following stylishdesign helped to achieve smooth colourchanges. Despite being artificial the flowerlooks alive and volumetric.

Page 23: Satin Stitch Embroidery

3

So how can you create smooth colour changes?

The beauty of satin stitch is hidden in ability to achieve smooth colour changesthat make designs look alive. Border stitch is too edgy for this purpose, however inside stitch fits this task of “filling with paint” perfectly.

Have a look how 8 flowers can be put on one design.

The picture on the left shows real life size and picture on the right shows thesame design but with 5 fold magnification.

Page 24: Satin Stitch Embroidery

3

Inside stitch is done using two moves. The firstmove is to have needly piercing fabric vertically asindicated by point 1 on the picture.

Following first move the needle goes down vertically asshown on point 2, and thats it — the first stitch is done!

Length of the stitch can be anything from 0.6 sm (0.2'’)to 2 sm (0.8'’).

In order to do next stitch you will need to pierce fabricwith needly from bottom to appear in top point 3. As youcan this point is not far from previous point 2. This is whatmakes inside stitch to have all stitches close to each other.

The needle enters fabric again vertically at point 4,which completes second stitch. As you can see point 4is near point 1, so all you need to do now is to con-tinue stitching from step 1 to 4!

A few lines of inside stitch are shown onthe picture. Inside stitches can have differentlength.

On the scheme you can see points at which the needlepierces fabric. After some practice you will learn how touse inside stitch in away that covers the base fabric.

Even our most accessible designs canbe significantly enhanced with fine stitch. For example adding veins to rose leaveswill make them look alive.

Fine stitching is also important for allplants on this Chinese style design that wisheslong and successful life. You can see complexweaving on plants’ stems.

Sometimes it is necessary to stitch a few decorative details that will enhancelooks of the main design. This is done using fine stitch that is similar to borderstitch.

Page 27: Satin Stitch Embroidery

Nature designs benefit from fine stitch as ithelps to underline its area, lightness and airness. The following Chinese style stitching called“Flowers and Butterflies” had only two finelystitched elements - the antenna and then mainbody. These two elements are sufficient toenliven the whole composition, make it fine andlight.

2

On the following picturemagnified 3 times you can seehow thin parallel fine stitcheshelped to form nice curve.

Any stitching can benefitfrom selective application offine stitch to stress elementsthat will make work lookcomplete and charming.

Page 28: Satin Stitch Embroidery

If you remember border stitch is done using singleneedle move. Stitches can be done under angle towardsthe design or vertically depending on your choice. In allcases border stitch creates volumetric line and createaccurate design edges.

The following pictures shows how its done in theoryand in real life.

3

Fine stitch is very similar to border stitch. Its also done using one needle move to create stitchesthat are parallel to each other, the difference is that fine stitches usually have sharper angles.

On the picture above you can seehow to do fine stitch. On the right youcan see real life fine stitching magni-fied 3 times.

You can see how needle createsdirection and angle for stitchescreating very thin line.

Page 29: Satin Stitch Embroidery

Lets have a look how fine stitch allows to edge design. On the

picture you can see last stage in stitching design called “TheRainbow Pear”. Magnified image below shows how fine stitchhelped to edge face of the pear.

4

Fine stitch was also used to edgeeyes of the pear and small white dots -reflections on pear’s eyes.

Just have a look at the end result -simple stitch helped to make this kidsdesign look individual!

Have a look at the following example of awoman who stitched first time in her life. Naturallyshe made some mistakes such as chaotic directionof stitches and their angles are not the same. If you

compare this work with our example the same pear you will seethe difference. Good looking fine stitch requires all stitches tohave same direction. This example shows how important to havecorrect technique however given that it was done by aninexperienced person we should not criticise it too much!

The following example was madeby a man! The young man was notvery experienced but he tried reallyhard to be accurate and maintaincorrect direction of stitches... and hereis the result that looks practically asgood as original Anna’s work!

All our designs have step by step instructions, recommendations and magnified images of allelements to help even a beginner to create greatworks of art! Our schemes will help you createbeautiful work from first attempt and impress yourrelatives and friends! You can learn more about ourproducts on our web site at www.anna-craft.com
