    The status of the threatened bird species is taken from Birdlife International (Threatened Species).

    NP – National Park * - Heard only birds

    Tinamous - Tinamidae

    *Brown Tinamou (Crypturellus obsoletus): Heard along mid-Satipo Road Nov 6th.

    Ornate Tinamou (Nothoprocta ornata): One flushed from puna grasslands en route to Jauja Oct

    31st, good looks of one at Lago Junin Nov 1st and another observed near Junin Nov 4th.

    Ducks - Anatidae

    Andean Goose (Chloephaga melanoptera): Fairly common in the high puna wetlands of upper

    Santa Eulalia, Ticlio bog, and the Lago Junin area. At Lago Junin 300 were estimated Nov 1st.

    Crested Duck (Lophonetta specularioides): About 40 estimated at en route to Ticlio Bog Oct 31st

    and 50 at Lago Junin the following day.

    Torrent Duck (Merganetta armata): A distant pair was observed from the Inca-Finch spot west

    of Huanuco Nov 3rd and another pair observed at mid-Satipo Road Nov 8th.

    Cinnamon Teal (Anas cyanoptera): Ten were at Pantanos de Villa Oct 28th and the same number

    at Jauja No 11th.

    White-cheeked Pintail (Anas bahamensis): Good looks of 15 at Pantanos de Villa on Oct 38th.

    Yellow-billed Pintail (Anas georgica): Four seen at Lago Junin on Nov 1st and 10 observed at

    Jauja on Nov 11th.

    Puna Teal (Anas puna): About 20 seen at Lago Junin Nov 1st and 4th, and over 100 at Jauja Nov

    11th.

    Yellow-billed (Speckled) Teal (Anas flavirostris): A few at upper Santa Eulalia valley Oct 30th,

    about 20 en route to Ticlio Bog Oct 31st and common at Lago Junin Nov 1st: 100’s observed

    along the drying shores of Lago Junin. Around 75 were seen at Jauja Nov 11th.

    Ruddy (Andean) Duck (Oxyura (ferruginea) jamaicensis): Six of the southern black-headed

    race of Ruddy Duck was observed at Pantanos de Villa Oct 28th and 200 at Jauja Nov 11th. Some

    consider the Andean race to be a separate species.

    Guans - Cracidae

    Speckled Chachalaca (Ortalis guttata): Seven were at the San Ramon lodge grounds Oct 5th and

    10 seen the following day at lower Satipo Road.

    Andean Guan (Penelope montagnii): One observed mid-Satipo Road Nov 7th and another on

    Nov 9th.

    Grebes - Podicipedidae

    White-tufted Grebe (Rollandia rolland): Four were seen at Lago Junin on Nov 1st and five on

    Nov 4th; another two were at Jauja Nov 11th.

    Pied-billed Grebe (Podilymbus podiceps): Five observed at the Pantanos de Villa wetlands on

    Oct 28th.

    Great Grebe (Podiceps major): Eight of this elegant grebe were observed at Pantanos de Villa

    wetlands Oct 28th, most still in alternate plumage.

    Flamingos - Phoenicopteridae

    Chilean Flamingo (Phoenicopterus chilensis) Near-threatened: Approximately 250 estimated at

    Lago Junin Nov 1st and 50 on Nov 4th.

    Penguins - Spheniscidae

    Humboldt Penguin (Spheniscus humboldti) Vulnerable: A few of these penguins were observed

    off of San Pedro Oct 27th.

    Diving-Petrels - Pelecanoididae

    Peruvian Diving-Petrel (Pelecanoides garnoti) Endangered: One observed off of Lima Oct 28th.

    Boobies - Sulidae

    Peruvian Booby (Sula variegata): Common along the coast hundreds observed offshore along

    Lima’s coast Oct 28th.

    Cormorants - Phalacrocoracidae

    Neotropic Cormorant (Phalacrocorax brasilianus): Common along the coast: 100’s at Pantanos

    de Villa.

    Red-legged Cormorant (Phalacrocorax gaimardi) Near-threatened: Six of this striking

    cormorant was seen off Lima’s coast Oct 28th.

    Guanay Cormorant (Phalacrocorax bougainvillii) Near-threatened: About 20 seen offshore

    along Lima coast Oct 28th.

    Pelicans - Pelecanidae

    Peruvian Pelican (Pelecanus thagus) Near-threatened: Common along the coast.

    Herons - Ardeidae

    Fasciated Tiger-Heron (Tigrisoma fasciatum): One was observed on a riverbed en route to

    Satipo Nov 5th.

    Great Egret (Ardea alba): Two at Pantanos de Villa Oct 28th, one at Lago Junin on Nov 4th, 15

    roosting along the river near Satipo the following day and one at Jauja Nov 11th.

    Snowy Egret (Egretta thula): Fifteen at Pantanos de Villa on Oct 28th and five at Jauja Nov 11th.

    Little Blue Heron (Egretta caerulea): Twenty observed at Pantanos de Villa Oct 28th.

    Cattle Egret (Bubulcus ibis): A single at Pantanos de Villa Oct 28th, two near Jauja Oct 31st and

    two at Lago Junin Nov 1st and 4th.

    Black-crowned Night-Heron (Nycticorax nycticorax): Approximately 20 were at Pantanos de

    Villa Oct 28th; two were in upper Santa Eulalia valley Oct 30th and four seen at a lake en route to

    Ticlio Bog Oct 31st.

    Ibises - Threskiornithidae

    Puna Ibis (Plegadis ridgwayi): A few at Pantanos de Villa Oct 28th and at upper Santa

    Eulalia/Ticlio Oct 30-31st. A high of 300 were in the puna grasslands at Lago Junin Nov 1st and

    hundreds seen Nov 4th. Twenty at Jauja Nov 11th.

    New World Vultures - Cathartidae

    Black Vulture (Coragyps atratus): Common on the coast Oct 28th and Nov 11th, and five in the

    Satipo area Nov 5th.

    Turkey Vulture (Cathartes aura): About 30 seen in the Satipo area Nov 5th.

    Andean Condor (Vultur gryphus) Near-threatened: Two seen at the gorge area, Santa Eulalia

    valley Oct 29th and five others were observed the following day further up the valley including

    the Polylepis patch.

    Hawks - Accipitridae

    Pearl Kite (Gampsonyx swainsonii): One perched on a wire outside Satipo Nov 5th.

    Swallow-tailed Kite (Elanoides forficatus): Four at the Carpish trail on Nov 2nd, and one at San

    Ramon Nov 5th.

    Plumbeous Kite (Ictinia plumbea): Around 20 at San Ramon area Nov 5th, and five seen at lower

    Satipo Road Nov 6th.

    Solitary Eagle (Buteogallus solitarius) Near-threatened: One soaring adult observed at a distance

    mid Satipo Road Nov 6th.

    Roadside Hawk (Rupornis magnirostris): A couple was seen each day at San Ramon and Satipo

    Road Nov 5th to 9th.

    Harris’s Hawk (Parabuteo unicinctus): Eight were present at the Pantanos de Villa marsh on Oct

    30th.

    White-rumped Hawk (Parabuteo leucorrhous) Good looks of an adult soaring at Carpish Pass

    Nov 2nd.

    Variable Hawk (Geranoaetus polyosoma): A few of these buteos were observed of both races at

    upper Santa Eulalia valley, Jauja area, and Lago Junin area.

    Black-chested Buzzard-Eagle (Geranoaetus melanoleucus): Four were observed in the Santa

    Eulalia valley, Oct 29th.

    White-throated Hawk (Buteo albigula): One observed soaring at Carpish Pass Nov 2nd.

    Rails - Rallidae

    Plumbeous Rail (Pardirallus sanguinolentus): Heard at Pantanos de Villa Oct 28th and Lago

    Junin Nov 4th. Two observed at Lago Junin Nov 1st.

    Common Gallinule (Gallinula galeata): About 10 seen at Pantanos de Villa Oct 28th and the

    same number at Lago Junin Nov 1st.

    Giant Coot (Fulica gigantea): Two seen at a small pond near Ticlio Pass Oct 31st.

    Slate-colored (Andean) Coot (Fulica ardesiaca): Common at coastal and altiplano marshes.

    Hundreds at Lago Junin Nov 1st and 4th and 200 estimated at Jauja Nov 11th.

    Avocets - Recurvirostridae

    Black-necked Stilt (Himantopus mexicanus mexicanus): Fifteen were at the ponds by the beach

    at Pantanos de Villa on Oct 28th.

    Oystercatchers - Haematopodidae

    American Oystercatcher (Haematopus palliatus): Eight were at the beach at Pantanos de Villa

    on the Oct 28th.

    Blackish Oystercatcher (Haematopus ater): Three on the rocks along the coast south of Lima

    Oct 28th.

    Plovers - Charadriidae

    Andean Lapwing (Vanellus resplendens): Common in the altiplano: five were at Ticlio Bog on

    the Oct 31st, over 20 were in the grasslands surrounding Lago Junin on the Nov 1st, and eight

    Nov 4th.

    Killdeer (Charadrius vociferus): Two at San Pedro on Oct 27th.

    Sandpipers - Scolopacidae

    Spotted Sandpiper (Actitis macularius): Two were at Pantanos de Villa on Oct 28th, and two

    were seen by PJ along the river near San Ramon Nov 5th.

    Greater Yellowlegs (Tringa melanoleuca): Singles were at Pantanos de Villa Oct 28th, Lago

    Junin on Nov 4th and Jauja Nov 11th.

    Whimbrel (Numenius phaeopus): A hundred were at the beach at Pantanos de Villa on Oct 28th.

    Ruddy Turnstone (Arenaria interpres): Two were at Pantanos de Villa Oct 28th.

    Baird’s Sandpiper (Calidris bairdii): Two seen in fields near Junin Nov 1st.

    Semipalmated Sandpiper (Calidris pusilla): A single was at the edge of the beach pond at

    Pantanos de Villa Oct 28th.

    Puna Snipe (Gallinago andina): One was flushed from Ticlio Bog area by PJ Oct 31st.

    Wilson’s Phalarope (Phalaropus tricolor): About eight were seen at pools at San Pedro on Oct

    27th.

    Gulls - Laridae

    Andean Gull (Chroicocephalus serranus): Fairly common at high Andean lakes and marshes.

    Gray-hooded Gull (Chroicocephalus cirrocephalus): About 30 seen around Pantanos de Villa

    Oct 28th including immature and breeding plumaged birds.

    Gray Gull (Leucophaeus modestus): About 10 mostly immatures observed with other gulls at the

    beach area, Pantanos de Villa Oct 28th.

    Franklin’s Gull (Leucophaeus pipixcan): Common along the coast: about 50 at Pantanos de

    Villa Oct 28th.

    Belcher’s (Band-tailed) Gull (Larus belcheri): Common along the coast.

    Kelp Gull (Larus dominicanus): A few immatures were observed with Band-tailed Gulls at

    Pantanos de Villa beach ponds on Oct 28th.

    Inca Tern (Larosterna inca) Near-threatened: Common offshore with 40 seen along Lima south

    coast Oct 28th.

    Black Tern (Chlidonias niger): One winter plumaged individual observed off the beach Pantanos

    de Villa Oct 28th.

    South American Tern (Sterna hirundinacea): Three adults were flying past Pantanos de Villa

    beach Oct 28th.

    Pigeons - Columbidae

    Rock Pigeon (Columba livia) Introduced: Common and widespread in towns and villages.

    Spot-winged Pigeon (Patagioenas maculosa): Small numbers (10-30) observed daily at Santa

    Eulalia valley and Tarma Oct 29-Nov 1st.

    Band-tailed Pigeon (Patagioenas fasciata): Three observed in flight along the Carpish trail Nov

    2nd and fairly common at upper Satipo Rod with more than 50 seen Nov 8-9th.

    Plumbeous Pigeon (Patagioenas plumbea): Good looks of one perched at the side of the road

    Satipo Road Oct 6th.

    Plain-breasted Ground-Dove (Columbina minuta): Two observed in flight along the river west

    of Huanuco on Nov 3rd.

    Ruddy Ground-Dove (Columbina talpacoti): One seen on the grounds of our lodge in San

    Ramon Nov 5th.

    Croaking Ground-Dove (Columbina cruziana): Three observed in the lower Santa Eulalia

    valley on Oct 28th; fairly common in mid Santa Eulalia valley with 10 Oct 29th, and a few the

    following day.

    Bare-faced Ground-Dove (Metriopelia ceciliae): Two observed in the upper Santa Eulalia

    valley Oct 29th.

    Black-winged Ground-Dove (Metriopelia melanoptera): Twenty seen in the upper Santa Eulalia

    valley Oct 29th and 30th, and Lago Junin Nov 4th. A pair was seen at Junin Nov 1st.

    White-tipped Dove (Leptotila verreauxi): One was flushed from the road while driving up the

    Santa Eulalia valley on Oct 29th and another was seen at San Ramon Nov 5th.

    West Peruvian Dove (Zenaida meloda): Common and widespread along the coast.

    Eared Dove (Zenaida auriculata): Common and widespread along the coast, around Hacienda

    Santa Cruz and in the fields at upper Mantaro Road Nov 8th.

    Cuckoos - Cuculidae

    Squirrel Cuckoo (Piaya cayana): Two observed at San Ramon Nov 5th and another at lower

    Satipo Road Nov 6th.

    Smooth-billed Ani (Crotophaga ani): Fifteen observed en route to Satipo Nov 5th and a few were

    seen lower Satipo Road Nov 6-7th.

    Groove-billed Ani (Crotophaga sulcirostris): Five at Pantanos de Villa Oct 28th and a few at

    Hacienda Santa Cruz Nov 2-3rd.

    Owls - Strigidae

    Great Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus): One observed roosting in a eucalyptus above the gorge

    Santa Eulalia valley Oct 29thand another in the garden of La Florida Nov 1st.

    Peruvian Pygmy-Owl (Glaucidium peruanum): Two observed at including scope looks at Santa

    Eulalia valley on Oct 30th.

    Burrowing Owl (Athene cunicularia): Two observed en route to Ticlio via Jauja Nov 1st.

    Nightjars - Caprimulgidae

    Sand-colored Nighthawk (Chordeiles rupestris): Nice looks of this beautifully patterned

    nightjar were had at Satipo: A loose flock of 40 was observed foraging over fields outside Satipo,

    on the evening of Nov 5th.

    *Band-winged Nightjar (Systellura longirostris): One heard at the grounds of Hacienda Santa

    Cruz Nov 2nd by TP.

    Swifts - Apodidae

    Chestnut-collared Swift (Streptoprocne rutila): About 10 along the river en route La Quinua

    Nov 3rd, 20 at lower Satipo Road Nov 6th, five at upper Mantaro valley Nov 8th and 10 at upper

    Satipo Nov 9th.

    White-collared Swift (Streptoprocne zonaris): Forty along the river en route to La Quinua Nov

    8th, 75 at San Ramon Nov 5th and a single at upper Mantaro valley Nov 8th.

    Andean Swift (Aeronautes andecolus): Ten observed at the gorge/bridge area Oct 29th and 30 at

    upper Santa Eulalia valley on Oct 30th.

    Fork-tailed Palm-Swift (Tachornis squamata): Two were seen in fields near Satipo by PJ Nov

    5th.

    Hummingbirds - Trochilidae

    Green Hermit (Phaethornis guy): One observed mid Satipo Road Nov 6th, and another seen

    higher by PJ, AG on Nov 8th.

    Sparkling Violetear (Colibri coruscans): Four seen along mid Satipo Road Nov 6th.

    Amethyst-throated Sunangel (Heliangelus amethysticollis): Two along the Carpish trail Nov 2nd

    and one Nov 3rd; one at mid Satipo Road Nov 7th and upper Nov 10th.

    Speckled Hummingbird (Adelomyia melanogenys): One at mid Satipo Road Nov 6th and another

    higher up slope on Nov 8th.

    Long-tailed Sylph (Aglaiocercus kingii): One seen as a fly-by at Carpish pass Nov 2nd; and TP

    and LK had great looks beside the road near the lodge at Calabaza Nov 9

    Bronze-tailed Comet (Polyonymus caroli) ENDEMIC: Good looks were obtained in the Santa

    Eulalia valley on Oct 29th with two seen.

    Andean Hillstar (Oreotrochilus estella): One perched bird observed briefly at La Quinua Nov

    4th.

    Black-breasted Hillstar (Oreotrochilus melanogastor) ENDEMIC: One at upper Santa Eulalia

    valley Oct 30th, another in puna grasslands en route to Jauja Oct 31st, and a female at Lago Junin

    Nov 1st.

    Green-tailed Trainbearer (Lesbia nuna): Two were seen at Hacienda La Florida Oct 31st and

    four Nov 1st.

    Tyrian Metaltail (Metallura tyrianthina): One female was identified as this species above the

    gorge Santa Eulalia Oct 30th; five were at Carpish Pass Nov 2nd and two Nov 3rd; two others seen

    at upper Satipo Road Nov 10th.

    Fire-throated Metaltail (Metallura eupogon) ENDEMIC: One observed in the elfin forest at

    upper Mantaro valley Nov 8th.

    Black Metaltail (Metallura phoebe) ENDEMIC: Three were seen at the polylepis forest at upper

    Santa Eulalia valley Oct 30th, and two at La Florida Oct 31st and Nov 1st.

    Sapphire-vented Puffleg (Eriocnemis luciani): One observed perched at upper Mantaro valley

    Nov 8th.

    Shining Sunbeam (Aglaeactis cupripennis): Around 10 seen at the montane scrub of the upper

    Mantaro valley Nov 8th.

    Collared Inca (Coeligena torquata): Four observed at Carpish Pass Nov 3rd and three on Nov 9-

    10th at upper Satipo Road.

    Violet-throated Starfrontlet (Coeligena violifer): Eight along the Carpish Pass trails Nov 2rd and

    three on Nov 3rd. Two were seen at mid Satipo Road Nov 7th and at upper Satipo Road Nov 10th.

    Mountain Velvetbreast (Lafresnaya lafresnayi): Singles observed at Carpish Pass Nov 2-3rd.

    Sword-billed Hummingbird (Ensifera ensifera): PJ observed one flying by at upper Satipo

    Road Nov 9th.

    Great Sapphirewing (Pterophanes cyanopterus): One observed at upper Satipo Road Nov 7th.

    Booted Racket-tail (Ochreatus underwoodii): One female observed by LK at mid Satipo Road

    Nov 6th.

    Giant Hummingbird (Patagona gigas): Observed in upper Santa Eulalia Valley on Oct 29-30th;

    and a few daily in the gardens of Hacienda La Florida Oct 31st and Nov 1st.

    another on Nov 8th.

    Powerful Woodpecker (Campephilus pollens): Good but brief looks of one perched at the side

    of Carpish trail Nov 3rd. Within its range this species is quite uncommon.

    Falcons - Falconidae

    Black Caracara (Daptrius ater): Three observed perched on and with cows along lower Satipo

    Road Nov 6th.

    Red-throated Caracara (Ibycter americanus): A group of six was observed in trees by the

    highway outside Satipo Nov 5th.

    Mountain Caracara (Phalcoboenus megalopterus): Fairly common in the altiplano with one or

    two observed at upper Santa Eulalia valley, Ticlio Bog and Lago Junin area Oct 30th-Nov 1st and

    Nov 4th. Three were seen at the upper Mantaro Valley Nov 8th.

    Yellow-headed Caracara (Milvago chimachima): Five at San Ramon and en route to Satipo Nov

    5th and a single seen at lower Satipo Road the following day.

    American Kestrel (Falco sparverius): Widespread and fairly common on the west slope and

    highlands. One or two observed most days. Also observed at upper Mantaro valley Nov 8th.

    Aplomado Falcon (Falco femoralis): Two in over-flight at La Quinua on Nov 1st and another by

    PJ Nov 4th.

    Mountain Parakeet (Psilopsiagon aurifrons): Nine observed perched and in flight above the

    gorge at Santa Eulalia Valley Oct 30th, and four Nov 11th.

    Andean Parakeet (Bolborhynchus orbygnesius): A flock of 40 was seen in flight and perched at

    the upper Mantaro valley Nov 8th.

    with over 50 in the Lago Junin area Nov 1st and 10 the 4th. Over 10 were at the upper Mantaro

    International estimates less than 300 adults remaining. Two of this declining species was

    observed at Ticlio Bog on Oct 31st and four Nov 11th.

    Ondores, Lago Junin Nov 1st. This species is very local in it’s small range.

    Streak-backed Canastero (Asthenes wyatti): About 15 seen and heard in the moist bunchgrass

    grasslands around Lago Junin Nov 4th.

    Cordilleran Canastero (Asthenes modesta): Two observed near the gorge at Santa Eulalia valley

    Oct 29th.

    Eye-ringed Thistletail (Asthenes palpebralis) ENDEMIC: Two seen and heard at upper Satipo

    Road Nov 10th. Good views of one at close range. Range-restricted species.

    Creamy-crested Spinetail (Cranioleuca albicapilla) ENDEMIC: Four of this pretty spinetail

    were at Hacienda La Florida on Oct 31st and two Nov 1st; one was seen by PJ near our lodging

    near La Quinua; and another seen at upper Satipo Road Nov 8th.

    Red-capped Cardinal (Paroaria gularis): Two immatures with rusty heads were observed at the

    lodge at San Ramon Nov 5th.

    Black-faced Tanager (Schistochlamys melanopis): Six seen at the Antennae Road, Satipo Nov

    5th and another along Satipo Road Nov 7th.

    Magpie Tanager (Cissopis leverianus): Four seen in the San Ramon area Nov 5th and the lower

    parts of Satipo Road Nov 6th-8th.

    White-browed (Black-capped) Hemispingus (Hemispingus atropileus) ENDEMIC: One was

    seen along the Carpish Tunnel trail Nov 1st and eight Nov 3rd; five was at upper Satipo Road Nov

    9th and eight the following day.

    Superciliared Hemispingus (Hemispingus superciliaris): Singles observed at Carpish Pass Nov

    Oleaginous Hemispingus (Hemispingus frontalis): About five observed low in the shrubs at

    upper Satipo Road Nov 9th.

    Black-eared Hemispingus (Hemispingus melanotis): Two along Satipo Road Nov 7th and over

    20 higher up the road Nov 9th.

    Drab Hemispingus (Hemispingus xanthophthalmus): A group of six in a bird flock at the

    Carpish Pass tunnel area on Nov 5th and a single Nov 8th.

    Nov 9th and five the following day.

    Rufous-chested Tanager (Thlypopsis ornata): Eight of these pretty birds were observed at

    Carpish Tunnel trail Nov 5th and five on the 3rd; a few daily were along Satipo Road Nov 7th-10th.

    Silver-beaked Tanager (Ramphocelus carbo): Common in the San Ramon and Satipo area Nov

    5-6th, two along Satipo Road Nov 7th and eight Nov 8th.

    Hooded Mountain Tanager (Buthraupis montana): Five observed along the Carpish Trail Nov

    2nd and two on the 3rd; and another couple observed at upper Satipo Road Nov 7th.

    Grass-green Tanager (Chloronis riefferii): A few of this great tanager were seen in bird flocks

    in the highlands: One in a bird flock along the Carpish Tunnel trail Nov 2nd, and singles along the

    Satipo Road Nov 7th and 8th.

    Lacrimose Mountain-Tanager (Anisognathus lacrymosus): Two seen along at the Carpish trail

    Nov 2nd and eight Nov 3rd; three seen at upper Satipo Road Nov 7th and two Nov 8th and 9th.

    Scarlet-bellied Mountain-Tanager (Anisognathus igniventris): This stunning bird was fairly

    common at upper Satipo Road with 10 seen Nov 7th and 8th, and six on Nov 10th.

    Buff-breasted Mountain Tanager (Dubusia taeniata): One observed in a bird flock at upper

    Satipo Road Nov 9th and two on the 10th.

    Chestnut-bellied Mountain Tanager (Dubusia castaneoventris): Two were at the Carpish

    Tunnel area on Nov 2nd.

    Yellow-throated Tanager (Irodosornis analis): Three observed low in the shrubs along Satipo

    Road Nov 8th and two seen the 9th.

    Golden-collared Tanager (Irodosornis jelskii): Like the following tanager species a striking and

    pretty bird. One observed at upper Satipo Road Nov 9th and four Nov 10th.

    Yellow-scarfed Tanager (Iridosornis reinhardti) ENDEMIC: Another pretty tanager of cloud

    forest with two along the Carpish Tunnel trail Nov 2nd and six on the 3rd.

    Fawn-breasted Tanager (Pipraeidea melanonota): One seen by PJ at Carpish Pass Nov 2nd.

    Blue-and-Yellow Tanager (Thraupis bonariensis): Fairly common in the Santa Eulalia valley

    and on the grounds of Hacienda La Florida, outside Tarma. Several were seen daily Oct 29th to

    Nov 1st. Three en route to La Quinua Nov 4th.

    Orange-eared Tanager (Chlorochrysa calliparaea): One observed by TP along Satipo Road

    Nov 6th.

    Blue-grey Tanager (Thraupis episcopus): Two observed at lower Santa Eulalia Road, five at

    Hacienda Santa Cruz, Huanuco; and fairly common along Satipo Road Nov 5-8th the Lima area

    Oct 30th and four were at Hacienda Santa Cruz Nov 3rd. Common in the Tingo Maria area.

    Palm Tanager (Thraupis palmarum): Over 10 seen in the San Ramon area.

    Blue-capped Tanager (Thraupis cyanocephala): Eight along the Carpish trail Nov 2nd and three

    on Nov 3rd; fairly common along Satipo Road Nov 7-10th with a high of 20 seen on Nov 9th.

    Giant Conebill (Oreomanes fraseri) Near-threatened: Eight observed at the polylepis woodland

    at La Quinua Nov 4th. This large conebill is a polylepis specialist.

    Rusty Flowerpiercer (Diglossa sittoides): Four on the grounds of Santa Eulalia Gardens Oct

    28th.

    Moustached Flowerpiercer (Diglossa mystacalis): One was observed at Carpish Pass Nov 2nd

    and two at upper Satipo Road Nov 9th.

    Black-throated Flowerpiercer (Diglossa brunneiventris): Fairly common on the grounds of

    Hacienda La Florida with eight seen Oct 31st and four on Nov 1st; one was at La Quinua Nov 4th,

    15 at upper Mantaro valley and Nov 8th and two at upper Satipo Road Nov 10th.

    Masked Flowerpiercer (Diglossa cyanea): Six were seen at Carpish Pass Nov 2nd and five the

    following day, four at upper Satipo Road Nov 8th, eight the following day and five on Nov 10th.

    Plushcap (Catamblyrhnchus diadema): Five seen along Carpish Tunnel trail Nov 3rd and another

    Rufous-backed Inca Finch (Incaspiza personata) ENDEMIC: Brief but good looks of one

    scrub habitat an hour west of Huanuco Nov 3rd.

    Collared Warbling-Finch (Poospiza hispaniolensis): A female seen at lower Santa Eulalia

    valley Oct 29th.

    Bright-rumped Yellow-Finch (Sicalis uropygialis): About 50 observed at upper Santa Eulalia

    valley Oct 30th, 20 en route to Ticlio Bog Oct 31st and over 200 in the altiplano around Lago

    Junin Nov 1st.

    Greenish Yellow-Finch (Sicalis olivascens): A flock of about 20 seen in the upper Santa Eulalia

    Oct 29th.

    Blue-black Grassquit (Volatinia jacarina): A few observed in Lima Oct 28th; and one observed

    in Santa Eulalia valley Oct 29th; and five in the Satipo area Nov 5th and 6th.

    Chestnut-throated Seedeater (Sporophila telasco): Two observed at San Pedro on Oct 27th.

    Chestnut-bellied (Lesser) Seed-Finch (Sporophila angolensis): Fairly common at Villa Jennifer

    with a single seen on Nov 5th, three on the 7th and four on Nov 8th.

    Yellow-bellied Seedeater (Sporophila nigricollis): Four were at the Hacienda Santa Cruz

    grounds on Nov 2nd and three at the Antennae Road, Satipo Nov 5th.

    Band-tailed Seedeater (Catamenia analis): Five at Santa Eulalia valley Oct 29th and 30th; one en

    route to Ticlio Bog Oct 31st and two en route to La Quinua Nov 3rd.

    Paramo Seedeater (Catamenia homochroa): Great looks of one at upper Mantaro valley Nov 8th.

    Tricolored Brush-Finch (Atlapetes tricolor): Two observed along Satipo Road Nov 6th, 7th and

    9th.

    Black-spectacled Brush-Finch (Atlapetes melanopsis) ENDEMIC Endangered: Great looks of

    one at the upper Mantaro valley Nov 8th. Very few people have seen this bird due to the

    remoteness of the site, and very small range.

    Slaty Brush-Finch (Atlapetes schistaceus): Two along the Carpish tunnel trail Nov 2nd and one

    on Nov 3rd.

    Rusty-bellied Brush-Finch (Atlapetes nationi) ENDEMIC: Common above the bridge at upper

    Santa Eulalia valley with about 15 observed on Oct 29th and more than 20 observed Oct 30th.

    Yellow-browed Sparrow (Ammodramus aurifrons): Five in the San Ramon and Satipo area Nov

    5th and six recorded at lower Satipo Road Nov 6th.

    Rufous-collared Sparrow (Zonotrichia capensis): Common and widespread in the highlands.

    Common (Bush-Tanager) Chlorospingus (Chlorospingus ophthalmicus): Five at upper Satipo

    Road Nov 9th and two the 10th.

    Short-billed (Bush-Tanager) Chlorospingus (Chlorospingus parvirostris): Two seen at Carpish

    Pass trail Nov 2nd.

    Grosbeak Cardinals - Cardinalidae

    Golden (-bellied) Grosbeak (Pheucticus chrysogaster): Two at lower Santa Eulalia valley Oct

    29th and one the following day; two at La Florida Nov 1st and one at Carpish Pass by PJ Nov 2nd;

    and three at La Quinua Nov 4th.

    Peruvian Meadowlark (Sturnella bellicosa): Four on the grounds of Hacienda Santa Cruz Nov

    2nd and five the following day.

    Scrub Blackbird (Dives warszewiczi): Common in the Lima area and lower Santa Eulalia valley

    with many seen and heard Oct 29th and 30th.

    Shiny Cowbird (Molothrus bonariensis): One observed at Hacienda Santa Cruz on Nov 2nd.

    Scarlet-rumped (Subtropical) Cacique (Cacicus uropygialis): One observed flying across the

    Satipo Road Nov 7th.

    Yellow-rumped Cacique (Cacicus cela): Common at San Ramon and lower Satipo Road Nov

    5th-8th.

    Mountain Cacique (Cacicus (leucoramphus) chrysonatus): Singles were seen along Satipo Road

    Nov 9th and 10th.

    Thick-billed Euphonia (Euphonia laniiostris): About 10 seen around the San Ramon area Nov

    5th.

    White-vented Euphonia (Euphonia minuta): Two were seen at the Antennae Road, Satipo Nov

    5th.

    Orange-bellied Euphonia (Euphonia xanthogaster): Six observed along Satipo Road Nov 6th,

    two on the 7th and four Nov 8th.

    Blue-naped Chlorophonia (Chlorophonia cyanea): Two observed along Satipo Road Nov 6th.

    Thick-billed Siskin (Spinus crassirostris): Five were at the polylepis patch at upper Santa Eulalia

    valley Oct 30th; and about 10 of these polylepis associated species at La Quinua Nov 4th.

    Hooded Siskin (Spinus magellanicus): Fairly common in the highlands where flocks were seen at

    several localities including: Santa Eulalia valley, Hacienda Santa Cruz, and upper Mantaro valley

    Nov 8th.

    Olivaceous Siskin (Spinus olivaceus): A huge flock of over 100 was seen in flight at San Ramon

    Nov 5th, another flock of 20 was at the Antennae Road, Satipo Nov 6th and two were observed

    along Satipo Road Nov 8th.

    Black Siskin (Spinus atratus): Five were seen at the polylepis forest at upper Santa Eulalia valley

    Oct 30th and four in the Lago Junin area Nov 1st.

    Old World Sparrows - Passeridae

    House Sparrow (Passer domesticus) Introduced: A few observed en route to Junin Nov 1st.

    Mammals

    Common Gray Four-eyed Opossum (Philander opossum): One observed crossing the road

    during night along Satipo Road Nov 7th.

    Nine-banded Armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus): One observed crossing the road during night

    along Satipo Road Nov 7th.

    White-bellied Spider Monkey (Ateles belzebuth chamek): A troop of about 10 of the all black A.

    b. chamek form of this monkey were observed basking and playing at a rocky outcrop at the base

    of falls along Satipo Road Nov 6th. A male howler was also present and young spiders were seen

    to tease the howler by pulling its tail, though the spider monkeys gave the larger howler plenty of

    space. The young spider monkeys were also seen sliding down rocks.

    Red Howler Monkey (Alouata seniculus): One male observed joining spider monkeys at a rocky

    clearing below some falls along Satipo Road Nov 6th.

    Neotropical Otter (Lontra longicaudus): One observed briefly twice by PJ at the fast flowing

    river behind the lodge at San Antonio Nov 6th.

    Vicuna (Vicugna vicugna): Many small herds (30 in total) were observed en route to Ticlio bog

    Oct 31st, and on the way to Lago Junin Nov 1st.

    Brown Agouti (Dasyprocta variegata): One observed crossing lower Satipo Road Nov 6th.

    Montane Cavy (Cavia tschudii): One observed by TP at a roadside stop near Lago Junin Nov 4th.

    Northern Viscacha (Lagidium peruanum): Excellent looks of four along the roadside at upper

    Santa Eulalia valley Oct 30th, and one at Lago Junin Nov 1st.
