The word

The word “satire” comes from the Latin satura lanx meaning "medley, dish of colorful fruits” ; but “satirize,” “satiric,” etc., are of Greek origin (satyricos) that’s why in the 16th century, most believed that the term satire came from the Greek satyr, mythological figures, companions of Dionysos and central characters of the satyr plays of ancient Greece.

Classical vs. Modern

Types of Classical Satire

Horatian

Using wit, exaggeration, and self-deprecating humor, Roman satirist Horace criticized some vice in society through gentle, mild, and light-hearted humor. Horatian satire is far more common in modern society.

Juvenalian

Named after the Roman satirist Juvenal, this type of satire is far darker and employs irony, sarcasm, moral indignation. Juvenalian satire seeks to immediately correct some evil in society through scorn, outrage, and savage ridicule. This form is very pessimistic in tone and often times, humor is completely lacking .

The Satire of Petronius

The Satyricon is an example of Menippean Satire, which is very different from the formal verse satire of Juvenal or Horace. Menippean satire - especially that of Petronius in The Satyricon - contains a mixture of prose and verse, serious and comic elements, erotic and decadent passages.

Modern Satire

Contemporary popular usage often uses the term "satire" in a very imprecise manner. While satire often uses caricature and parody, by no means are all uses of these or other humorous devices, satiric.

Types of Modern Satire

The Colbert Report is an example of contemporary American satire. Colbert's character is an opinionated commentator who, in his TV interviews, interrupts people, points and wags his finger at them to demonstrate the principle of modern American satire: the ridicule of the actions of politicians and other public figures by taking all their statements and beliefs to their furthest (supposedly) logical conclusion, thus revealing their perceived hypocrisy . Satire in TV Shows

The Simpsons, South Park and the Family Guy parody modern family and social life by taking their assumptions to the extreme; they often strongly criticize various phenomena in politics, economic life, religion and many other aspects of society, and thus qualify as satirical.

Satire in Movies

Satire can be subtle, gentle or broad and obvious or serious, funny, political or literal, whimsical or cruel. On screen it goes by other names; spoofs, put-ons, parodies. All are satires. Some are direct spoofs like Mel Brooks’ movies ( “Young Frankenstein”, “Spaceballs”) or more recent releases like “American Dreamz” and “ Idiocracy” some more subliminal (Welles’ “F for Fake”, Kubrick’s “Dr. Strangelove”, or “The Spinal trap”, etc. ).
