Thank you to everyone who generously donated to our annual Banyule Children’s Gift Appeal that wrapped up last week. Each year this campaign supports disadvantaged families in Banyule, delivering presents to children so that they can wake up on Christmas morning and see that Santa has not forgotten them.

I would also like to acknowledge our valued sponsors – Christmas Elves, Haughton Stotts Real Estate and Blue Cross. Their contribution has helped to make this event truly special.

I hope that you have a wonderful evening with your family, friends and neighbours, and on behalf of the staff at Banyule Council and my fellow councillors, I wish you a merry Christmas and a very happy and safe New Year.

Now let us come together as a community in song and celebration!

Cr Craig Langdon Mayor of Banyule

Welcome to Banyule’s community Christmas celebrationChristmas is a special time and Banyule Council’s Carols by Candlelight is a well-loved tradition, setting the tone for what we hope will be an enjoyable and relaxing break away from our busy daily lives.

This year marks the return of Carols by Candlelight to Ivanhoe Park. With its picturesque parkland, natural amphitheatre, and proximity to the dazzling Boulevard Lights, the stage is set for a magical evening.

Then at 7.30pm, find a spot underneath the big top and get ready to sing along with Ali McGregor, the Australian Children’s Choir, the Diamond Valley Brass Band, Sean Donehue, Eltham College, plus a very special singing Santa!

When A Child Is Born

Eltham College

A ray of hope flickers in the skyA tiny star lights up way up high

All across the land dawns a brand new mornThis comes to pass when a child is born

A silent wish sails the seven seasThe winds of change whisper in the trees

And the walls of doubt crumble tossed and tornThis comes to pass when a child is born

A rosy dawn settles all aroundYou’ve got the feel you’re on solid groundFor a spell or two no-one seems forlornThis comes to pass when a child is born

It’s all a dream and illusion nowIt must come true, sometimes soon somehowAll across the land dawns a brand new morn

This comes to pass when a child is born

Very God, Begotten not created;O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him,

While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks

Australian Children’s Choir with the Diamond Valley Brass Band

While shepherds watched their flocks by night,All seated on the ground;

The angel of the Lord came down,And glory shone around,

“Fear not!” said he, for mighty dreadHad seized their troubled mind.“Glad tidings of great joy I bring,

To you and all mankind.”

“To you, in David’s town, this day,Is born of David’s line

a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord,And this shall be the sign:

The heavenly babe you there shall findTo human view displayed,

All meanly wrapped in swathing bands,And in a manger laid,”

“Thus spake the seraph and forthwithAppeared a shining throng

Of angels praising God and thusAddressed their joyful song:“All glory be to God on high,And to the earth be peace;

Goodwill henceforth from heaven to menBegin and never cease.”

Away in a Manger

Australian Children’s Choir with the Diamond Valley Brass Band

Away in a manger, no crib for a bedThe little Lord Jesus lay down His sweet head

The stars in the bright sky looked down where he layThe little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay.

The cattle are lowing, the Baby awakesBut little Lord Jesus, no crying He makes

I love you, Lord Jesus, look down from on highAnd stay by my side until morning is nigh.

Be near me, Lord Jesus, I ask you to stayClose by me forever and love me, I pray

Bless all the dear children in your tender careAnd take us to Heaven to live with you there.

The First Noel

Australian Children’s Choir with the Diamond Valley Brass Band

The First Noel, the Angels did say,Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay;

In fields where they lay keeping their sheepOn a cold winter’s night that was so deep:

Chorus: Noel, Noel, Noel, NoelBorn is the King of Israel!

They looked up and saw a starShining in the East beyond them farAnd to the earth it gave great light

And so it continued both day and night.

Chorus

And by the light of that same starThree Wise men came from country far;

To seek for a King was their intentAnd to follow the star wherever it went.

Chorus

Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer

Rudolph the Red-Nosed ReindeerHad a very shiny noseAnd if you ever saw it

You would even say it glows

All of the other reindeerUsed to laugh and call him names

They never let poor RudolphJoin in any reindeer games

Then one foggy Christmas Eve,Santa came to say,

‘Rudolph with your nose so bright,Won’t you guide my sleigh tonight?’

Then all the reindeer loved himAs they shouted out with glee,

‘Rudolph the Red-Nosed ReindeerYou’ll go down in history!’
