ILA 2018 Aviation Exhibition &

Airshow, Berlin & Aviation Museums & Collections

of (East) Germany including Peenemunde, Rechlin & Finow

Held every 2 years, the Berlin Airshow, or ILA, was the world’s first such international aerospace exhibition and airshow and is certainly as big as the similar, well-known events held in Paris and Farnborough; and many would say that its airshow is a great deal better: a good, long crowd-line and a more exciting display with a wide range of civil and military participants. At ILA 2016 over 200 aircraft participated, either in the static display and/or in the airshow. Our tour offers you the option of enjoying 1 or 2 days at the show.

We begin our tour with visits to a good number of excellent aviation museums, collections and locations – some behind the old, ex ‘Iron Curtain’ in what was the German Democratic Republic, or East Germany - including several very famous sites of the Second World: Rechlin, Finow and Peenemunde; the first two were Luftwaffe ‘secret’ flight-test airfields and the latter a top-secret research and development complex responsible for the V-1 and V-2 rockets! We will visit:

• Arbeitsgemeinschaft Niedersächsischer, Wunstorf

• Silbergovel Café: a Vickers Viscount!

• Luftfahrtmuseum Laatzen-Hannover

• Magdeburg: a Tupolev TU-134!

• Borkheide: an Ilyushin IL-18!

• Rechlin–Larz Luftfahrtmuseum

• Luftfahrt Technisches Museum, Rechlin • Peenemunde Historisch-Technisches Museum

• Interessenverein Luftfahrt, Neuenkirchen

• Luftfahrtmuseum Finow

• Berlin Wall & Checkpoint Charlie Museum

• Alliiertenmuseum, Clayallee

• Deutsches Technik Museum • Luftwaffe Museum, Gatow

There is a free day in Berlin to explore and enjoy the many attractions of this vibrant and popular capital city. We can recommend any of the various ‘hop on, hop off’ sightseeing tours. Or maybe you prefer a second day at ILA and/or spotting/photographing the airliners at Tegel Airport from the excellent observation terrace. We fly on the scheduled services of British Airways from London’s Heathrow Airport; travel in-country by air-conditioned coach (see appropriate paragraph on page 6 of General Information); stay each night in a comfortable hotel on a bed and breakfast basis; and are accompanied by one of our very experienced and well-travelled Tour Managers. A previous tour to all of the above museums in northern Germany was extremely popular and we expect this ‘repeat’ tour to be no different! Limited by time or funds? Then why not join our shorter trip to ILA 2018: 25th-29th April. See Tour 227810 on our website.

PROVISIONAL ITINERARY (all times local) DAY 1: SATURDAY, 21st APRIL Between 05:30 and 06:00 please check-in with British Airways in Terminal 5 at London’s Heathrow Airport. Then meet your Ian Allan Tour Manager and fellow enthusiasts who will be standing by Column G, located in the Departures Hall immediately before the self-service check-in podiums (not the usual line of check-in and fast bag-drop desks). Latest check-in time advised by the airline is 2 hours prior to departure, i.e. 06:00. Heathrow Airport, Terminal 5 Flight: BA 976 Departs: 08:00 Hannover Arrives: 10:30 Meeting our driver we board the coach and depart for the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Niedersächsischer Luftfahrtmuseum located on the perimeter of Wunstorf airbase; their small but very interesting collection of historic aircraft includes a Junkers Ju-52 (pictured right), which was recovered from the bottom of Hartvikvann Lake near Narvik, Norway in 1986; a Noratlas N2501; Transall C-160D; Do-28 Skyservant; Piaggio 149D; and 2 helicopters, a Mil Mi-8 and UH-1D. Website: www.ju52-halle.de/en/ Driving to the south of Hannover, in Ricklingen we stop at the Flugzeug Café am Silbervogel - a Vickers Viscount no less! Website: www.restaurant-silbervogel.de/ We stay tonight in the outskirts of Hannover at the Ibis Hannover City Hotel on a bed and breakfast basis. The air-conditioned rooms include satellite TV, a work desk and bathroom. There is wi-fi access in the room: it is free in the lobby where there are internet terminals. German and international meals are served in the Hopfen & Malz restaurant each evening and snacks and drinks are available at the hotel’s bar which is open 24-hours. Website: www.accorhotels.com/gb/hotel-3365-ibis-hannover-city/index.shtml

DAY 2: SUNDAY, 22nd APRIL First stop is the Luftfahrtmuseum Laatzen-Hannover and its fabulous collection of 38 aircraft, from the earliest days of aviation up to the recent past. Among the various types on display is a Sopwith Camel, Spitfire, FW-190, 2 Me-109s, various MiGs plus other French, German, British, Italian, American and Russian types. Website: www.luftfahrtmuseum-hannover.de/index.php/de/ausstellung/unsereflugzeuge Continuing to Magdeburg Flughaven, there is an old “Interflug” Tupolev Tu-134 on view.

Last visit of the day is the Hans Grade Museum on Borkheide airfield. This museum is dedicated to the first German pilot of a motorised aeroplane which took to the air in 1908. Also resident here is an ex-“Interflug” Ilyushin Il-18. Website: www.borkheide.de/verzeichnis/visitenkarte.php?mandat=3824 Tonight we stay in the town of Kleinmachnow near Potsdam, at the Ibis Berlin Dreilinden Hotel on a bed and breakfast basis. The air-conditioned rooms include satellite TV, a work desk and bathroom. There is wi-fi access in the room: it is free in the lobby. The hotel has a full service restaurant with terrace and a 24-hours bar. Website: www.accorhotels.com/gb/hotel-2768-ibis-berlin-dreilinden/index.shtml

DAY 3: MONDAY, 23rd APRIL At 09:00 we depart for Rechlin; known today as the Luftfahrt Technisches Museum where flying first started in 1916. But it was from here, in 1925, that the first secret flights took place of what was to become Hitler’s Luftwaffe. During WWII Rechlin was the chief testing establishment for new aircraft and weapon systems. Throughout the Cold War it was a Soviet Air Force fighter-bomber base until 1993. We also visit the smaller but still interesting, Rechlin-Larz Luftfahrtmuseum which has a lot of memorabilia and just a few aircraft. Late afternoon we arrive in the university town of Greifswald, staying overnight on a bed and breakfast basis at the Mercure Hotel Greifswald Am Gorzberg. It offers free w-fi, modern spa facilities and its quiet rooms come with a free minibar and satellite TV. On-site is the Aquarelle restaurant with panoramic terrace and the Atelier pub. Website: www.accorhotels.com/gb/hotel-5388-mercure-hotel-greifswald-am-gorzberg/index.shtml

DAY 4: TUESDAY, 24th APRIL Although we are only a few miles from the Baltic Sea it takes an hour to get there along the country roads. From 1936 to 1945 Peenemunde and the surrounding area was the largest armaments centre in Europe, covering 15 square miles (25kms)! Slave labourers, concentration camp inmates and Allied prisoners of war carried out the construction work. Website: http://museum-peenemuende.de/the-museum/die-denkmal-landschaft/?lang=en It was from this highly secret testing ground that the first launch of a missile into space took place in October 1942!

Up to 12,000 people worked simultaneously on various guided weapons projects including, most famously, the world’s first cruise missiles(!) and the first-ever functioning large-scale rockets. Both were designed as weapons of terror against civil populations and were mainly made by forced labourers. From 1944 they began large-scale production of the “Vergeltungswaffen” 1 and 2 (V-weapons) – before the site attracted the attention of RAF Bomber Command! We have asked for a guided tour of this very special and historic site. Website: http://museum-peenemuende.de/?lang=en Next, a quick stop at the Sammlung Aero Club Peenemunde, to take a look at the 2-seater Ilyushin Il-28U and the MiG-21US, Mil Mi-8 and Mi-14: all once operated by the DDR (East German) Air Force.

Driving on to Neuenkirchen, we have requested a visit to the Interessenverien Luftfahrt Neuenkirchen and their excellent collection of Soviet and DDR Air Force ‘cold war warriors’ (pictured left). Website: www.ivln.de/ Arriving in Berlin, we stay 5 nights on a bed and breakfast basis at the 4-star Berlin Mark Hotel. Situated down a quiet street, it’s only a 2-minutes walk from the famous Kurfürstendamm (or Ku-damm) shopping strasse. It has air-conditioned, spacious rooms equipped with a flat-screen TV with satellite channels. Some rooms include free Wi-Fi and the trendy cocktail lounge serves drinks and snacks.

The Uhlandstraße Underground Station is a 4-minutes walk away; a 10-minutes walk is the Memorial Church, Berlin Zoo and the Zoologischer Garten Train Station (with connections to Schönefeld International Airport and ILA).

DAY 5: WEDNESDAY, 25th APRIL A free day to enjoy as you wish: e.g. a day at ILA 2018 or Tegel Airport (it has a fantastic viewing terrace), sightseeing or exploring the attractions of Berlin at your own pace. NB: all arrangements at your own expense.

DAY 6: THURSDAY, 26th APRIL Mid-morning we arrive in Eberswalde (from where the world's first radio concert was broadcast in 1923), and the excellent collection of aircraft in the Luftfahrthistorische Sammlung Finow. From 1944 Finow was home of the famous KG200 which flew captured Allied bombers on clandestine missions; and it was from here that the unique and unusual “Mistel” programme (‘bomber-with-a-fighter-on-top combination’) was devised and developed. Exhibits range from the Second World War to the Cold War. They are located in and around a HAS (hardened aircraft shelter) site (pictured right), on this ex-Soviet Air Force airbase! Possibly the only such location for any aviation museum in the world! Website: www.luftfahrtmuseum-finowfurt.de/

Mid-afternoon we arrive back in Berlin and visit the infamous “Berlin Wall & Checkpoint Charlie” Museum. Named after the famous crossing point on the Berlin Wall, it was created to document the so-called "best border security system in the world" (in the words of East German general Heinz Hoffmann). On display are the photos and related documents of successful escape attempts from East Germany, together with various escape apparatus: hot-air balloons, getaway cars, chairlifts – even a mini-U-Boat! Website: www.mauermuseum.de/ We arrive back at our hotel around 16:30.

DAY 7: FRIDAY, 27th APRIL Our first visit is to the Alliierten Museum which covers the Berlin Airlift, the dividing of Berlin into East and West and the Cold War years. The Museum’s exhibits include the French military train, the guardhouse from Checkpoint Charlie, a Handley Page Hastings T.5 (pictured left) and the DHC Chipmunk from the Station Flight, RAF Gatow (is the secret camera still fitted?). We understand that the Vickers Varsity is now locked away in storage on Tegel Airport. Since the closure of Berlin Tempelhof Airport in 2008, the Allied Museum has been trying to relocate to the old airport at some point. Website: www.alliiertenmuseum.de/en/0.php

Then to the very impressive Deutsches Technik Museum; it is huge, with various ‘transport’ and other exhibitions. You need several hours to see everything, but our visit is specifically to see only the aviation collection. Those who would like to spend longer here may do so, transferring back to the hotel at a time of their own choosing and expense. The main group arrive back at the hotel at approximately 13:00. The afternoon is free to enjoy as you wish.

DAY 8: SATURDAY, 28th APRIL This morning we depart the hotel by coach at 07:30 for a full day at ILA 2018 which takes place on Schönefeld International Airport. ILA have tightened up their security requirements for the 2018 event and for those of you who would like media accreditation, you can now only apply on-line via their website. At the end of the flying display we return to our hotel.

DAY 9: SUNDAY, 29th APRIL This morning we arrive at the ex-RAF station of Gatow to look around one of the best aviation museums in Europe (if not the world!): the excellent Militärhistorisches Museum der Bundeswehr-Flugplatz Berlin-Gatow and its huge number of aircraft – 214 at the last count! Plus 66 air defence missile and radar systems.

The Museum focuses mainly on the history of the post-war German Air Force and has a fabulous collection of more than 600,000 items, including 5,000 uniforms, 30,000 books and documents, art, personal estates, training materials and a great deal more. Not surprisingly, not all are on public display! Uniquely, there is at least one aircraft of every type ever to serve in the air forces of East and West Germany! There are also displays on the history of the airfield when it was used by the RAF.

A lot of the post-war aircraft are stored outside on the tarmac and runways. Website: www.luftwaffenmuseum.de Mid-afternoon we transfer the few miles to Tegel Airport and check in with British Airways for our flight back to Heathrow Airport; latest check-in time is 14:45. Berlin Tegel Airport Flight: BA 985 Departs: 16:45 Heathrow, Terminal 5 Arrives: 17:45 Whilst waiting for our luggage we bid each “auf Wiedersehn” – until we meet again!

GENERAL INFORMATION

Payment for Ian Allan Aviation Tours A deposit of £400.00 per person should accompany your Booking Form, with the balance due 10 weeks prior to the tour’s departure. Please see your Booking Confirmation/Invoice for the exact date. Please note that a reminder of the payment date will not be sent.

Passports and Visas Citizens of the UK are required to be in possession of a Full UK Passport which must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of your return to the UK. UK and EU citizens do not require a visa to enter Germany. You may also refer to the World Travel Guide website: www.wtgonline.com for general information on passports, visas and health requirements. Non-UK and EU citizens should contact the German Embassy in their country of residence for specific information and instructions.

FCO Consular Advice The FCO's consular service is a major operation. Every hour of every day consular staff around the world are advising and helping British nationals. We suggest you visit www.fco.gov.uk/knowbeforeyougo for up-to-date passport, visa and security information on the destination you intend visiting. In addition, the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) provide an Information Line, telephone: 0901 201 505 (calls currently charged at 51p per minute). Coach Travel Ian Allan Aviation Tours only use coaches chartered from reputable companies, with a driver. Where we have had to cancel a tour, due to the small number of bookings, we have looked at the possibility of renting a 16-18 seater mini-van, with our tour manager driving. However, without exception, the hiring of such a vehicle is illegal if any of the occupants make any payment towards the rental price, fuel and/or other expenses - known as “for hire or reward”. Any such rental, made without these facts being made known to the rental company at the time of booking, also invalidates all insurance covering the vehicle, contents and persons. The DVLA has also confirmed that any “for hire or reward” rental could breach the normal driving classification of a standard U.K. driver’s license. Therefore, we do not undertake any tours using 9-18 seater mini-vans from a rental company; either with our tour manager, or a member of the group, driving.

Baggage Regulations – British Airways – Departing from London’s Heathrow Airport Checked Baggage: British Airways will transport 1 piece of ‘checked’ baggage per person free of charge, the total dimensions of which must not exceed 190cm x 75cm x 65cm (75in x 29½in x 25½in), including the handle, pockets and wheels. Maximum weight is 23kg (50lb). Cabin Baggage: for travel out of London’s Heathrow Airport you may take 1 carry-on bag (and 1 personal item). Your main piece of hand baggage can be up to the dimensions of 56cm x 45cm x 25cm (22in x 18in x 10in), including handles and wheels. You must be able to lift the bag into the overhead locker unaided. Carry-on baggage must be stowed in carry-on compartments of the aircraft, under a seat, or in an overhead locker. Your bag must also fit into the bag gauge, available at the check-in area. All larger-sized items must go in the aircraft’s hold. Limited quantities of liquids (individual containers must not exceed 100ml or 3.5 fl oz), are now allowed as hand baggage but must be carried separately through security in a clear plastic, zip-top or re-sealable bag that does not exceed 20cm x 20cm (8 inches x 8 inches), or quart size. Items must fit in the bag comfortably and the bag must be completely closed. Hand baggage can contain shampoo, suntan lotions, creams, toothpaste, hair gel and hair spray, perfumes, cosmetics such as mascara and lip gloss, water and other drinks, soups and syrups and other items of a similar consistency. Also prescription medicines in liquid form, e.g. diabetic kit. Cigarette lighters are NOT permitted in hold baggage or through the security search. These may be purchased airside. Hand baggage can also include electronic equipment including mobile phones, digital cameras and MP3 players (such as i-Pods). Laptops must be removed from the bag for x-ray. At security all remaining items should be placed in the tray provided for screening, e.g. car keys and fobs, cash, solid food, books, newspapers, cigarettes and tobacco, belts and shoes. Please note: you may be subject to a hand search by the security team and required to remove footwear to be x-ray screened.

Once in the departure lounge passengers may purchase certain items in any shop and take it onto the aircraft as normal. Passengers may be subject to a secondary search at the departure gate before boarding. Any items not on the approved list will be removed.

Baggage Weight Restrictions – UK Airports Since 1st June 2004, any single piece of checked baggage weighing more than 70lbs (32kgs) has not been accepted at check-in by any airline operating from London’s Heathrow Airport. The BAA may introduce this limit at their other airports in the UK (and so might non-BAA airports), in an attempt to reduce manual handling injuries amongst airport staff. Please bear this in mind when packing.

Meals Meals are not normally included in the price of our tours unless they are included within the room rate as we realise that not everyone wants three meals a day. In-flight meals when included within the cost of the air ticket form part of the tour price, however some airlines (primarily European carriers) now only serve refreshments for which they charge accordingly. This tour includes Continental breakfast each morning in the hotel.

Health Requirements There are no known mandatory or recommended precautions for visiting Germany. However, if you are in any doubt we recommend that you consult your local doctor or health centre for the latest information.

Climate and Dress In April the climate in Germany can be on the cool side with temperatures around the mid 60⁰sF during the day and cooler in the evening. We therefore recommend you take warm, summer clothing, including a jacket.

Travel Insurance For citizens of the United Kingdom, Ian Allan Travel Ltd can provide competitive and comprehensive insurance cover for the duration of your tour. However, if you do not wish to take out our insurance, you must ensure that comparable or greater cover is taken. The number of your Insurance Policy should be written, if known, on your Booking Form at the time of making the reservation, but no later than the date when final payment is due. A copy of the policy must be forwarded to Ian Allan Travel Ltd. Individual insurance policies are arranged through CoverMore Insurance Services Limited; the premiums for which will vary according to your circumstances. Full details are available on request.

Wheelchair Assistance at Airports. Anyone requiring wheelchair assistance at airports must have this service requested and confirmed in advance. Airlines and/or airports can no longer provide this service without prior confirmation, therefore, please annotate your booking form accordingly.

Flexible Itinerary We are very happy for enthusiasts to take time away from the printed itinerary to pursue their own interests, so long as they inform the Tour Manager. It will be the individual’s responsibility to ensure that they re-join the group in the hotel at the stated time on the day of departure. Please note: it is not possible to refund the cost of the coach nor admission tickets if you decide not to join the group on any day(s).

Land Only Price For enthusiasts who would prefer to join the tour at Hannover Airport (instead of flying from the UK with the main group), we would be pleased to provide a ‘Land Only’ price. This price does not include any flights whatsoever and you are strongly advised to contact us before making your own flight arrangements in the event that there has been a change to the published itinerary. Please note that the ‘Land Only’ price is based on you meeting the tour as stated above; it includes both arrival and departure airport transfers. Should you not travel with group, for whatever reason (e.g. delayed flight, own arrangements), we are unable to refund the cost of the transfers.

Flight Timings & Connecting Travel Arrangements to Departure Airport All flight departure and arrival times are correct at the time of preparing each itinerary; however, airlines may change these times with little or no prior warning. In practice such changes are only a few minutes either way and the final itinerary will show the actual times. Clients making their own arrangements to get to the departure airport by air, rail, coach etc., should bare the above in mind if purchasing non-refundable or non-changeable tickets. Ian Allan Travel cannot be held responsible for any changes to flight times and any privately arranged travel tickets to the airport becoming invalid.
