Willis Horton and Three Chimneys Farm=s Will TakeCharge earned 2013 champion 3-year-old honorsthanks to scores in the Travers, GII Pennsylvania Derby,GI Clark H. and a nose second in the GI Breeders= Cup

Classic. Second inboth the GI Donn H.and GI Santa AnitaH. in February andMarch, respectively, the chestnutreturned to winningways in a roughlyrun renewal of theGII Oaklawn H. Apr.12. A full dance cardappeared to havegotten the better ofWill Take Chargewhen he finished

sixth at 3-5 odds in Churchill=s GII Alysheba S. May 2,but the son of MGISW Take Charge Lady (Dehere)bounced right back to finish a good second beneath theTwin Spires in the GI Stephen Foster H. last time June14. Trainer D. Wayne Lukas wasn=t pleased when his>charge= drew the rail in the Whitney, but wouldn=tchange places with anyone otherwise. "He's quite ahorse, and I think he's the best horse in the countryright now," Lukas said. "We have to go out and proveit; prove it a couple of different times, I'm sure--three,four more times to get where we want to get... I feellike he's still the champion, and I feel very good aboutthe fact that we all get together on the sameracetrack." One could do much worse than TrilogyStable and Laurie Plesa=s Itsmyluckyday (Lawyer Ron)at 12-1 on the morning line.

Last year=s GI Preakness S. runner-up was four in theGulfstream Park H., but has tallied a trio of stakesvictories at Monmouth since. Eddie Plesa, Jr.=s chargemost recently annexed the GIII Salvator Mile July 6,and was flattered when two-three finishers, Bradester(Lion Heart) and Valid (Medaglia d=Oro), finished two-one in the GII Monmouth Cup six days ago.

TWELVE LOOK TO PASS THE TEST An extremely intriguing group of 12 3-year-old filliesare set to contest Saratoga=s historic GI Test S. thisafternoon. Treadway Racing Stable=s Sweet Reason(Street Sense) appears the one to beat considering thespeed signed on andher record around oneturn. The baysplashed home adecisive winner in anoff-the-turfer heresome 51 weeks ago,and handled the GISpinaway S. fieldwith similar ease thefollowing month. Shesettled for secondafter a tardy start inBelmont=s GI FrizetteS., and was fourth inthe GI Breeders= CupJuvenile Fillies. Sweet Reason resurfaced to take anAqueduct optional claimer on the inner track Mar. 7 bya better-than-it-looked half-length, and was a well-beaten third behind GI Kentucky Oaks heroine and J “TDN Rising Star” J My Miss Sophia (Unbridled=sSong) in that venue=s nine-panel GII Gazelle S. Apr. 5.Realizing that she was probably best around one bend,Sweet Reason=s connections opted to wait forBelmont=s GI Acorn S. June 7 rather than press on toLouisville, and they were rewarded when their chargedefeated >Rising Star= Sweet Whiskey (Old Fashioned)by a half-length under a perfect Irad Ortiz ride. "She'sreally turned a corner this year with her breezes," saidtrainer Leah Gyarmati, who has overseen a worktab forSweet Reason that includes three bullet drills since theAcorn. "She's never been this kind of work horse andnow every time she works she's been right there. She'sjust growing up." Ashbrook Farm=s Southern Honey(Colonel John) has done very little wrong in her lastthree tries, and enters off a field-best 99 Beyer SpeedFigure. She donned cap and gown by an emphatic 5 3/4-length margin third up at Keeneland Apr. 5, andwas similarly dominant in a Churchill optional claimergoing this distance on the Oaks undercard May 2.

Trainers Unite cont.

AThe medication issue is definitely something thatneeds to be dealt with and if we can get somethingdone nationally, even better,@ Motion said whenreached for comment yesterday. AThe program thestates came up with early on in the year--the Mid-Atlantic Uniform Medication Program--that was a bigstart trying to get all states on board that have thesame medication policies. The problem I have withmedication in this country, is dealing with differentrules with every state that we go to, and I don=t thinkthe general public has any idea how complicated that isfor us. I very much endorse it [the Mid-Atlantic UniformMedication Program] and it=s a big step to having anational policy or as close as we are going to get tohave a national policy on medication. I think this is astep further.@ Motion continued, AI think by bringing up this idea ofeliminating race-day medication, ultimately that=severybody=s goal and is something we would like to seehappen. That is why I=m becoming part of that. Theproblem we have in our industry is that nobody isbringing everyone together to have any kind of anational policy. I think by the trainers at least comingforward with this proposal it starts a conversationabout having a national policy. There are a lot of thingsthat come with that. The biggest thing is going to beenforcing the rules as they come into place. It=s all verywell having rules, but if they aren=t able to enforcethem if it ever happens, it=s not going to get usanywhere.@

Bob Curran Jr. of The Jockey Club was equallythrilled by the development. AWe=re heartened by the statement from such aprominent and accomplished and experienced group oftrainers,@ he told TDN. AThe Jockey Club has longadvocated for the practice of horses competing freefrom the influence of medication and this is right in linewith that.@

AOn behalf of the Board of Directors of Breeders= CupLimited, we want to acknowledge and applaud thecourage of the trainers who have recently pledged theirsupport for the gradual elimination of the use ofauthorized medications on raceday in the United States. The Breeders= Cup has long advocated for policies thatwould bring the U.S. in line with other majorinternational racing jurisdictions and we fully supportthis group of prominent trainers. We believe a broadcoalition of tracks and owners also share this view andwe are committed to provide support, financial andotherwise, to an effort to implement on a national basisphasing out raceday medications. We look forward toparticipating in this initiative to create a workable planwith others in the industry, including the forward-looking trainers who are signatory to this statement, allof whom are long-time supporters of the Breeders=Cup.@ --Breeders= Cup Chairman Bill Farish & Breeders= Cup President & CEO Craig Fravel

AI think--especially the fact that internationally, horsemen don=t run on Lasix--that it [race-daymedication] is a problem that American racing needs todeal with at some point. It is probably as good a timeas any.@ --trainer Ken McPeek

APETA supports the proposal by leading trainers tophase out race-day medications, beginning withbanning Lasix for 2-year-old Thoroughbreds in 2015and ending Lasix use for horses of all ages in 2016. AsPETA's recent investigation revealed, Lasix, a dangerous diuretic that is used to lessen the effects ofpulmonary bleeding, is often used to gain an advantagerather than for valid medical reasons, because it makeshorses lighter and faster. We urge the trainers whoback this proposal, including Todd Pletcher, Bill Mott, and D. Wayne Lukas, to turn the proposal into actionby being the first to dump Lasix in the trash can, whereit belongs.@ --PETA Senior Vice President, KathyGuillermo

The tumorwas detected shortly thereafter and surgically removed.Due to the unusual source of the testosterone, Headand Strawbridge will not be held responsible orcharged. "It is terrible news,@ said Head. "She never missed aday and was very sound. She had those three races insix or seven weeks and had never been stopped. Wewere obviously aiming her at the Prix de Diane, butthen this happened.@ Head also offered a positive update on We Are.

"They've taken quite a harshview of things [to disqualify], but it is totally the correctdecision even though they've not made any allowancesfor the fact that it was endogenous production oftestosterone. WISE DAN TO BYPASS FOURSTARDAVE Morton Fink=s two-time reigning Horse of the YearWise Dan (Wiseman=s Ferry) will skip the GIIFourstardave H. at Saratoga Aug. 9, according totrainer Charlie LoPresti. The chestnut, last seencapturing his second straight GI Woodford Reserve TurfClassic S. at Churchill Downs on the GI Kentucky Derbyundercard, is under consideration for either the Aug. 30GII Bernard Baruch H. or the GI Woodward S. or the GIWoodbine Mile Sept. 14. "I feel like I'm playingcatch-up to try to make [the Fourstardave]," LoPrestisaid. "He's basically had two half-miles and afive-eighths. He worked good the other day, but I'dreally have to set him down again [to make theFourstardave]. If I waited for the Bernard Baruch, theWoodward, or the Woodbine Mile, it would give me alittle more time. "When I bring that horse over torun, I want him to be 150%, and I feel like I'm reallytrying to squish everything in to get to theFourstardave," LoPresti continued. KINGMAN REMATCH FOR CHARM SPIRIT Trainer Freddy Head has issued an upbeat bulletin onG1 Prix Jean Prat winner Charm Spirit (Ire) (InvincibleSpirit {Ire}), and noted that he would not shy awayfrom a rematch with Kingman (GB) (Invincible Spirit{Ire}) in the G1 Queen Elizabeth S. at Ascot Oct. 18. "He's a very nice horse--he's very tough andimproving," said Head. "I like him a lot. Maybe we'll

aim him at the QueenElizabeth at Ascot--thatcould be his target. I thinkwe might bypass thesummer with him, thenkeep him fresh for the endof the season.@ Charm Spirit finishedfifth, beaten 3 3/4 lengths, behind Night of Thunder(Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) andKingman in the G1 2000Guineas May 3 prior towinning the G3 Prix Paul

de Moussac June 7 and the Prix Jean Prat at ChantillyJuly 14. "We won't be scared of Kingman if he turns up--weweren't too far behind him in the Guineas,@ Headadded. "Charm Spirit wasn't well that day, either. Hedidn't enjoy the journey over and looking at him in thepaddock I didn't think he looked in great shape. He'simproved a lot since then."

TORONADO FINE AFTER SUSSEX DEFEAT Dual Group 1-winning miler Toronado (Ire) (HighChaparral {Ire}) has exited his second-place finish inWednesday=s G1 Sussex S. in good order, according totrainer Richard Hannon. Toronado went down by alength to the John Gosden-trained Kingman (GB)(Invincible Spirit {Ire}) while attempting to defend his

Sussex title, and Hannonadmitted that Al ShaqabRacing=s 4-year-old was simplybeat by a better horse onthe day. "Toronado has comeout of it fine--we're veryproud of him," Hannontold Racing UK. "I thinkthe race was run to suitus--I don't think we were

unlucky or anything. We got first run, we were handier,we were just beaten by a very good horse--he's a star.@ Hannon added that Toronado would likely travel toFrance for his next target. "He'll stay at a mile,@ the conditioner said. AHe mightgo for the [G1] Jacques le Marois [Aug. 17 at Deauville]or the [G1] Moulin [de Longchamp Sept. 14]--basicallyavoid that Gosden bloke! We might have another go at[Kingman] somewhere--we probably will and you can'tsay the result might be different, but we'll see.@

Hannon also noted that Michael Daniels= Windshear(GB) (Hurricane Run {Ire}), second in Wednesday=s G3 Gordon S. at Glorious Goodwood, will go to the G1 St Leger at Doncaster Sept. 13. "He didn't come down the hill [at Goodwood] verywell, he got a bit unbalanced, but Doncaster is a lovelyflat track,@ Hannon said. AThe straight is two furlongsfurther and he looks like he'll appreciate that. He's hadquite a hard time of things lately--he's basically been toevery major meeting so we'll give him a little bit of abreak and then bring him back for the Leger."

CELEBRATION IN THE CARDS FOR DARWIN Derrick Smith, Mrs. John Magnier and MichaelTabor=s Darwin (Big Brown), a battling third inWednesday=s G1 Sussex S. at Glorious Goodwood, could resurface in that course=s G2 Celebration MileAug. 23. Trainer Aidan O=Brien noted that he is seeking

Off the mark on debut at 16-1 over six furlongs atNewbury last July, J Wonder added a valuable nurseryto her resume over that trip at Newmarket in earlyAugust before disappointing when only seventh as thejoint-favorite for York=s G2 Lowther S. on her third runover that distance later that month. Upped a panel onher sophomore bow, the bay annexed the G3 FredDarling S. at Newbury Apr. 12, but missed the 1000Guineas when the ground came up fast. Withconnections opting for the G1 Poule d=Essai desPouliches and good-to-soft conditions and getting aplum inside draw, the portents looked strong for Classicglory. In the event that post position proved a poisonedchalice, however, as J Wonder raced too keenly at thefore and faded to be seventh in the May 11 Longchampfeature. Doing too much again when exposed up frontin the G1 Coronation S. at Royal Ascot June 20, JWonder labored late on to be seventh once morewithout being disgraced and was taken back to an idealtrip with hold-up tactics on the menu here. Againtending to over-race early, she was anchored with onebehind by Jimmy Fortune and it was his patience thatultimately benefitted her, as she had abundant energyleft when the split came inside the final quarter mile.Switched wide with the longtime leader Muteelaproviding a perfect aim, she delivered an impressivesurge to inhale that rival in the final strides. We’ve given Brian DiDonato and Steve Sherack mythical $2,000bankrolls and told them they must bet at least 1% and no more than 10%of their stake in each flat Grade I run at Saratoga. The player with thehighest bankroll at the end of the meet wins.

GI Alfred G. Vanderbilt H. - #7 Vyjack (15-1) I tried to talk myself off of Vyjack, who’s admittedly a bit of a reachhere, but was unsuccessful. He’s been put in some completelyperplexing spots throughout his career, but none as ambitious as the 10-furlong GII Suburban H. last time. The bay got this hopeless four-wide pressing trip in there, and backed out early before being eased, butthat may just help to inflate his price. He clearly wants to sprint, and hiscomeback at Aqueduct Apr. 27 was solid enough--he beat a next-outstakes winner and earned a decent speed figure. He was probably justovermatched when finishing ninth in the GI Metropolitan H. two backJune 7. If you look at Vyjack’s earlier races (he did win two gradedstakes, but still seemed then to be distance limited), he flashed someserious talent, and wasn’t too far away from what it will take to win thisfigure-wise. He’d be faster as a 4-year-old if realistically spotted, andhe’s been working very quickly since the Suburban debacle. I’ve pickedworse 15-1 shots before. Wager: $20 Win on #7 Vyjack.

GI Test S. - #4 Thank You Marylou (15-1) Will Thank You Marylou be one of those ‘worse 15-1 shots’? I lovethis race--so many viable options, but it looks destined to collapse tome. Sweet Reason is very much the horse to beat, and both Little Alexisand Bird Maker are intriguing, but I can’t resist the cut-back for my topselection. Thank You Marylou was a precocious sprinter early on in hercareer as a juvenile, annexing a turf sprint stakes at Colonial first outbefore being put up to second for an incident that didn’t involve her inthe GII Adirondack S. here. The chestnut resurfaced in Gulfstream’s AnyLimit S. going this distancce in March, and beat a solid field decisively ingood time. She was stretched out after that, and finished creditably inboth the GI Ashland S. (3rd) and GI Kentucky Oaks (5th). Thank YouMarylou was last seen finishing seventh in the GIII Iowa Oaks, but thatrace came over a sloppy track that she never seemed to get a hold of.She finally returns to an abbreviated trip, and I expect her to come flyinglate at a huge price. Wager: $30 Win on #4 Thank You Marylou.

GI Whitney H. - #7 Romansh (10-1) Romansh is sort of a frustrating horse. Just when he looks ready tobreak out, he runs a clunker like he did in the GI Donn H. (granted, hegot a ride that day that never gave him a chance) or last out in the GIISuburban H. But his good races are very good, and his GI Met Mile thirdstacks up well with winner and deserving Whitney favorite PalaceMalice. While the chalk was saving every inch of ground, Romansh waschasing three wide. But the 19-1 shot only finished 1 1/2 lengths behindPalace Malice and a half-length behind top miler Goldencents (not tomention, Clearly Now was behind in fifth, and he returned to air in theGIII Belmont Sprint Championship). According to Trakus data, Romanshcovered 20 feet more than Palace Malice, which equals about 2 1/4lengths. Most of his best races have come at this trip, so it’s really just amatter of him showing up--he’s a legitimate upset chance when he runshis race. Wager: $40 Win on #7 Romansh. Cont. p17

GI Alfred G. Vanderbilt H. - #8 Bakken (5-2) The lightly raced and extremely well-bred Bakken looks primed for abreakthrough performance. An impressive winner of his first twoattempts, the bay could do no better than fifth when ambitiously shippedto Southern California for the prestigious GI Malibu S. at Santa Anita inDecember. He returned from the shelf with a very game second behinda perfect trip winner after getting hooked on a hot pace in the GII TrueNorth S. at Belmont June 6. Appears to have been pointing for this spotsince, and is well-drawn on the outside. Wager: $80 Win on #8Bakken.

GI Test S. - #2 Fiftyshadesofgold (8-1) Her inside post is obviously terrible and there is plenty of other speedsigned on, but I just can’t stay away from Fiftyshadesofgold at asquare number. The gray ran her heart out after setting scorchingfractions in the one-mile GI Acorn S. on the GI Belmont S. undercard, just getting leg weary late to tire to fourth. The GIII Eight Belles S.heroine cuts back to her preferred distance and has been lighting up theChurchill Downs main track at dawn since. Makes up for the debacle asthe heavy chalk in last year’s GII Adirondack S. over this course.Wager: $40 Win on #2 Fiftyshadesofgold.

GI Whitney H. - #7 Romansh (10-1) While admittedly a complete wise-guy horse, Romansh could be theright one to upset the streaking Palace Malice. The dark bay has runsome very fast races when he’s on, including a tremendous third-placefinish with a wide trip following a freshening in this term’s GIMetropolitan H. I’m always willing to forgive horses that flop going thetricky distance of 1 1/4 miles at Belmont Park due to the start on theclubhouse turn, and this guy certainly fits the bill after a flat fifth as the2-1 choice in the GII Suburban H. July 5. A winner via DQ of last year’strack-and-trip Curlin S., the time has come for the Godolphin colorbearerto put it all together on the big stage. Wager: $40 Win on #7 Romansh.

5th-SAR, $98K, Msw, 2yo, 6f Royal Son (Tiznow)--I have the dubious distinction of having stoodnext to his dam Mama Nadine while she was in foal with this Tiznowbaby. This guy has some speed, but he has been generic at times andvery good at times, like the gate work with Two Weeks Off (Harlan’sHoliday) July 23. He drew the rail in this six-furlong event. Sir William Bruce (Malibu Moon) is owned and bred by SouthernEquine Stables. He is a half to the blue collar horse Skinny Peter (MoreThan Ready), who won four races and $73K as a Louisiana bred. SirWilliam Bruce has trained like he has talent, and two works over thetrack--four panels in :49 in the mud July 9 and a strong five-panel bulletin :59 flat July 22. Spoke with Eric Guillot and as always he is incrediblyentertaining and a virtual quote machine. "I think he has an amazingtrainer and that gives him a BIG CHANCE," he told me Friday. SirWilliam Bruce named after a young boy, that unfortunately passed awayand whose family is close to Michael Moreno, Mr. Southern Equine. Mariano intheninth (Summer Bird) was bought for $70,000 as aKEENOV weanling by Ramsey farm and debuts for Todd Pletcher. Hehas been based at Belmont. Being in bred to Storm Bird, or the StormCat line, this guy is bred to run short and win at under a mile. Wouldn'tsurprise me if this colt can do some running as a 2-year-old. Pride of Stride (Candy Ride {Arg}) comes from a slow maiden heat atDelaware--where he finished third July 10--but hails from a barn that hasbeen red hot. The Graham Motion pupil will improve second time aroundand this race lacks a superstar like ‘TDN Rising Star’ Competitive Edge(Super Saver) or Blame Jim (Sharp Humor). The chestnut waspurchased by Qatar Racing for $150,000 at Keeneland September. Waging War (War Front) hails from a superb barn. Al Stall, Jr. is oneof the most underrated conditioners in the country. The $350K KEESEPpurchase has done everything right and was much the best in a superbgate drill July 19, when he fired a best-of-27 five furlongs in 1:00 flat. Heacts like he has speed and is one to watch here. FQLLQW. Fire Away (War Front), bred by the Phipps family, has trainedforwardly and looks like he has much more to give. He has not been setdown, but has worked from the gate on the turf. He is a very well versedand trained animal. His gate work was actually a hand pop and then hecame back later in the month and actually popped the gate and wasapproved to start. I love his pedigree and being out of Unbridled mare, his pedigree has classic written all over it. The Danzig influence over theFappanio/Unbridled and what I have seen so far from this colt makesme very excited to see this guy at Payson in the winter, so make sureyou FQLLQW, win, lose or draw today. Evolution (Speightstown) that looks like he can improve second timearound for trainer Michael Mareina. He finished well in his one and only(third going five furlongs at Belmont July 2), and got a reminder of whatthe gate is on July 30 (breezing three panels in :37 1/5). The 10-holecan be tough at five furlongs, but at six furlongs it is perfect for a horselike Evolution.

AWe=ve been enjoying a solid meetthus far,@ said Bob Kulina, president of DarbyDevelopment LLC, operators of Monmouth Park. ATheracing quality has certainly been there and because ofthat, races with higher purses have been used moreoften; hence, the shortfall. Furthermore, we=ve runmore races this year than last, which has cut into thepurse account leaving us with no other option than tomake this change.@ Monmouth Park has also submitteda request to move four of the Meadowlands Septemberrace days to Oct. 24-25, as well as Breeders= Cupweekend Oct. 31-Nov. 1. Live racing continues atMonmouth Park until Sept. 28.

Betfred Mile H. cont. Runner-up over 10 furlongs in one of this meeting=stypically competitive handicaps on this day last year,Red Avenger=s form was in-and-out thereafter with asole placing in his next six outings coming when third inEpsom=s Investec Mile H. on the Oaks undercard June 6. Fitted with blinkers for the first time here as EdDunlop sought to unlock his latent talent, the dark baybegan inauspiciously as he lacked either the tacticalspeed or willingness to gain an all-important prominentpitch from his favorable low draw. Squeezed and spatout towards the back by the inevitable rush for the railand the lead approaching the first turn, he was allowedtime to find his feet and was brought wide for hischallenge as the in-form Heavy Metal loomed largeapproaching the final quarter mile. Despite that MarkJohnston trainee displaying all the tenacity from thefront that has long been the stable=s hallmark, RedAvenger dug in to raid his party and had the call with afinal thrust to win on the nod. AIt was a goodperformance, as he gave away his draw,@ hisconditioner said. AHe can be sluggish out of the boxesand Jimmy [Fortune] was brave enough to wait. Out offrustration I tried him in blinkers at home, as I=ve longfelt that he flatters to deceive, and he worked incrediblywell in them on Tuesday. I=ve always thought he was agood horse and Aidan O=Brien has many War Fronts andI notice he puts headgear on several of them. He willget into other big handicaps now and the new race atAscot on Champions= Day, which is very valuable, isone to think about. But he loves fast good and I wonderwhether we will get that then.@ Click for the RacingPost result. VIDEO, courtesy Racing UK.

WETHERBY GIVEN FLAT FIXTURE Wetherby Racecourse in West Yorkshire, whichgenerally hosts jumps racing, has been allocated its firstflat fixture for Apr. 26, 2015. "We are delighted to have been allocated our first flatraceday,@ said Jonjo Sanderson, chief executive andclerk of the course at Wetherby. "The rationale behindthe introduction of flat racing at Wetherby is to try andgrow our business and attract a new customer base toWetherby, as well as achieving a greater utilization ofthe excellent equine and customer facilities that theracecourse has to offer.@ He added, "This should not be seen as a steptowards the end of jump racing at Wetherby--in fact, the opposite. Any flat racing fixtures we secure will besupplementary to our core activity of jump racing, andprovide vital support to Wetherby's jump raceprogram."
