OUR LADY OF THE LAKE CHURCH 1 Park Avenue Mt. Arlington, NJ. 07856

WELCOME BACK, OUR CHURCH IS OPEN! Our Parish’s Opening

The Coronavirus has challenged our lives in the last few months in ways that none of us would have imagined. All of the sacrifices that we have had to make, including suspending public masses, have been difficult. Yet we are doing our part to protect the common good and to ensure the safety of all our parishioners and staff. As we prepare to open our parish each week for public Masses and other gatherings, I ask you to keep a few things in mind. A general dispensation from the Sunday obligation: If you are in an at-risk health group or just don’t feel ready for public Masses, you should continue to stay home. If you are sick or have been recently exposed to the Coronavirus, please be considerate of others and do not come to the parish.

Masks will be required of all who come. Yet, parishioners should understand that there is an assumed risk any time they enter a public space. If you do choose to attend Mass know that attendance at Mass will be limited. With only a small number of parishioners allowed at each Mass to ensure social distancing, your opportunities to attend may be infrequent at first.

Please be aware that we clean after each service and can always use help. Please let us know if you

are interested in helping. We look forward to being again with you at Mass. Remember, your safety is a priority for us!

WELCOME PARISHIONERS- NEW CHURCH PROTOCOL:

o EVERYONE OVER THE AGE OF 2 SHOULD WEAR FACE MASKS. o EVERYONE MUST PRACTICE SOCIAL DISTANCING – MARKINGS ARE IN CHURCH PEWS, ETC.

CERTAIN PEWS WILL BE CLOSED TO FACILITATE SOCIAL DISTANCING. o HAND SANITIZER IS AVAILABLE. o YOU WILL RECEIVE THE BODY OF CHRIST AT THE END OF MASS, PLEASE CONSUME AS YOU

LEAVE THE CHURCH QUIETLY AND WITH RESPECT. o ONE ENTRANCE AT PARKING LOT DOOR.

NEW MASS SCHEDULE AS FOLLOWS: SATURDAY, 5:00 PM SUNDAY, 8:00 AM, 10:00 AM, 12:00 PM MONDAY – FRIDAY 9:00 AM

GOD’S PLAN FOR GIVING / WE ARE A TITHING PARISH Tithing is a symbol of how God calls us to live our lives as stewards. In good times, tithing helps you remember that God is the source of all blessings, and it allows you to demonstrate your gratitude for His care. In hard times, tithing motivates you to remember God’s faithfulness, and it enables you to demonstrate trust in God to provide for all of your needs. Tithing is defined as one-tenth of your income. A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY READINGS HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

August 23, 2020

“Jesus went into the region of Caesarea Philippi and he asked his disciples, ‘Who do people say that the Son of Man is?’ They replied, ‘Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.’ He said to them, ‘But who do you say that I am?’ Simon Peter said in reply, ‘You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.’ Jesus said to him in reply, ‘Blessed are you son of John...’”

We are no different, because we are disciples of the Lord. He asks us the same question, but I wonder if we answer as did Peter, or as the other disciples responded.

There are countless ways we use to describe

someone. We can speak of size, talent, profession, family. All might be true. But it’s more important to know the person, rather than know about the person. Peter’s response is quite clear and to the point. Jesus is the Christ, the Messiah, the Son of God. We have accepted His invitation to consider what reply is most fitting for me to describe Jesus. We echo Peter’s response, He is not just the Savior of all humankind, but my personal Savior as well. If that is true for me, Jesus affirms me as He did Peter and entrusts to me my responsibility in the church, missionary discipleship.

TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME First Reading: Jeremiah 20:7-9 In this particularly poetic passage, Jeremiah complains that while teaching the Lord’s word, he is subjected to insults and derision. He determines to remain silent, but he cannot because the desire to speak the Lord’s name is “like a fire burning in my heart.” Second Reading: Romans 12:1-2 Paul tells the Christians to make sacrifices to avoid the trappings of the times, and to do God’s will. Gospel: Matthew 16:21-27

Jesus tries to make his disciples realize that by following him, they will endure suffering, degradation, and death. He tells them that they must deny themselves and take up the cross in order to be his disciples.
