n PICK OF THE PLATZES Opening ceremonies: Some of the Lehigh Valley’s best perform- ers will come together to kick off the festival. Blues-rock guitarists Todd Wolfe, Craig Thatcher and jazz-fusion player Scott Bradoka will become an acoustic trio. And “American Idol” contestant Tyler Grady of Nazareth will sing before opening officially opening the fest with the National Anthem. 7 p.m., Festplatz 2U: Musikfest is heavier on tribute bands this year, with some even at paid venues (Grateful Dead Tribute Dark Star Orchestra and Simon and Garfunkle tribute A.J. Swearingen & Jonathan Beedle). But if you’re not into paying to see copies of bands, check out 2U, a respected U2 tribute act. At least it’s good mu- sic without paying U2’s all-too-real real ticket prices. 9 p.m., Volksplatz Three Legged Fox: Delaware County indie-rock reggae jam band Three Legged Fox had Musikfest’s “Main Street in a frenzy last year,” says ArtsQuest Performing Arts Director Patrick Bro- gan. Quincy Mumford

n PICK OF THE PLATZESRod Piazza & The Mighty Flyers: The blues harmonica player has enough chops to have played on Animals and War founder Eric Burdon’s 2006 album “Soul of a Man,” and worked with Michelle Shocked. He’s also won the W.C. Handy Blues Award for Blues

Instrumentalist-Harmonica and his band has won two consecutive Handy awards for Blues Band of the Year. 8:30-11 p.m., Americaplatz

Quincy Mumford Band: This New Jersey group has an easy rock groove (think Jason Mraz or Dave Matthews with a bit

more reggae) that ArtsQuest Performing Arts Director Patrick Brogan says is “great summertime listening music.” Says Brogan: “Sometimes when you hear these bands, you can just see people listening, holding a beer.” 8 p.m., Lyrikplatz

The Greatest Funeral Ever: Sometimes a

band gets noticed for its name alone. And no one would complain if you checked out what The Greatest Funeral Ever sounds like. But there’s absolutely nothing funereal about this central Pennsylvania band’s music. It’s jammy, experimental nu-jazz with influences including Latin and funk. 8 p.m., Main Street

n PICK OF THE PLATZESAna Popovic: Serbia is likely not your first thought when it comes to blues rock, but the guitarist presents a “killer blues rock show live,” ArtsQuest Performing Arts Director Patrick Brogan says. 9 p.m., Americaplatz

Amped Up! Winners: For the first year, no Lehigh Valley band was a winner in Musikfest’s annual Battle of the Bands, this year called Amped Up! It also was the first year it was decided entirely by online votes. Panic Years and The Atomic Square, both Philadelphia indie-rockers, and The Hide and Seek Effect, a piano pop-rockers from Morgantown, W. Va., got the most votes among 10 finalists Musikfest chose. 5:30-9 p.m., Plaza Tropical

Los Straitjackets: It seems these masked Mexican avengers of surf-rock are critics’ picks every year at Musikfest, but if you’ve ever seen and heard them, you understand why. With 16 years and 16 albums behind them, they’re a Musik-fest tradition. 9 p.m., Volksplatz

Los Strait-jackets

TUESDAY, AUGUST 10

n PICKS OF THE PLATZESDiego’s Umbrella: Talk about hard to define: Even this band’s MySpace page resorts to hyphenated descriptions such as “Mexi-Cali Gypsy Pirate Polka” and “Ska-Flamenco-Rock.” The band even made an appearance on the punk Warped tour this summer. Add that to a penchant for Mariachi costumes, and you have an act all over the map. 7p.m., Volksplatz

Christian rock: Don’t get turned away by the Christian designation Lehigh Valley-based B-Attitudes play 60s-ish, psychedel-ic rock. Oley-based B9 Fate plays ‘70s-ish,

largely acoustic soft-rock. And Five Mile Fall from Souderton plays quiet rock. So come for the music, and if the message suits you, all the better. 12-5 p.m., Plaza Tropical.

Pete Francis: The New York-based indie folk-rocker, using the last name Heimbold, fronted the college cult band The Dispatch, which drew 110,000 people to its free final concert in Boston in 2004 and was the subject of the documentary “The Last Dispatch.” He’s had six solo discs since, the latest this year’s “The Movie We Are In.” 7 p.m., Plaza Tropical

n PICK OF THE PLATZESAmplify This/Big Band Boom: Formerly The Chuck Folds Five — yes, the frontman is the brother of alternative rocker Ben Folds — Amplify This plays rock and pop with a Southern flair. Then, the Greensboro, N.C., band quickly changes hats and plays

children’s music as Big Bang Boom. Big Bang Boom, 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m., Banana Is-land; Amplify This, 8 p.m., Main Street

Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue: The funk-rock horn-player is having quite a year: He worked with U2; performed at the Grammy Awards; played on the Oscar-

nominated song “Down in New Orleans” from “The Princess and the Frog;” his major label debut, “Backatown,” debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz chart, and more. 9 p.m., Americaplatz

Elvis Bossa Nova: Toronto-based Elvis Bossa Nova began as an experiment to

re-imagine The King’s classic tunes with an eclectic instrumentation. It blends rock, jazz, Latin, bluegrass, country, classical and improv music — playing Presley’s entire rep-ertoire, sometimes unrecognizably. 6 p.m., Banana Island

n PICK OF THE PLATZESThe Bank Street Band: A collection of 13 students from the Easton School of Rock, this classic rock group won the 2009 Lehigh Valley Music Award for Best Teenage Band, and kicked off the awards show with an appropriately loud and abrasive version of Jeffer-son Airplane’s “Somebody to Love” that awards founder Ian Bruce said “brought a tear to my eye.” 3 p.m., Plaza Tropical

She Said Sunday: Cover bands usu-ally draw a resounding “meh.” But with the growing popularity of “tribute” bands, even at Musikfest, the differ-ence between what they play and what cover band play is minimal. And She Said Sunday — whose repertoire includes Billy Idol, Blink 182 and Pat Benatar — won six Lehigh Valley Music Awards last year. 5:30 p.m., Ameri-caplatz

The Red Elvises: Another ‘fest favor-ite, these raucous Siberian surf-punk rockers also always seem to be among the critics choices. Go listen to them, and you’ll understand why. 9 p.m., Volksplatz

n PICK OF THE PLATZESStart Making Sense (Talking Heads Tribute): Two things about this Bethlehem-based tribute band make it worth seeing. First, Talking Heads broke up in 1991, and it’s unlikely you’ll ever be able to see the real thing again. Two, Talking Heads has great music. And oh yeah, three, these guys do it well. 7 p.m., Americaplatz

The Two Man Gentlemen Band: The New York-based vaudevillian duo combines jazz, vintage rhythm and blues and Tin Pan Alley with sly humor. The relentlessly barn-storming group got a boost last summer opening some dates for the Bob Dylan-Willie Nelson-John Mellencamp tour. 2:30 p.m. Main Street, 5:30 p.m., Liederplatz

Mishal Moore: Equally accom-plished at performing airy, operatic music and horn-enhanced rhythm and blues, the South Florida-based Moore bares her soul on both, adding her lyrical flair on intimate topics such as love and life. 8 p.m., Lyrikplatz

n PICK OF THE PLATZESThe Commander Cody Band: At most festivals, Commander Cody’s career of four Top 100 songs, 20 albums and the Top 10 hit “Hot Rod Lincoln” in 1972 would still get him paid-stage status. So enjoy its mix of country-rock, rockabilly and boogie-woogie for free when you have the opportunity. 7 p.m., Americaplatz

Great White Caps: The Bethlehem-based surf-rock group doesn’t take itself too seriously, but does take its music seriously.

And on closing night, it’s music by which to have some serious fun. 7-8:30 p.m., Volksplatz

Chembo and Grupo Chaworo: In a career that has seen him work with artists such as Tito Puente and Celia Cruz, Wilson “Chem-bo” Corniel, a Grammy-nominated, conga playing Latin percussionist, now leads his own Latin Jazz quintet, Grupo Chaworo. It lets him perform music that reflects his two loves — Latin jazz and traditional salsa. 8:30-11 p.m., Plaza Tropical
