George Grassick was brought up in a family of story tellers who brought the oral traditions of the Old World and enriched those traditions with strong alliances with First Nations Peoples, beginning in the pioneer era and continuing on to the present day. He has been around livestock since his childhood. That and his connection to the wild elements of the northern range also inform his poems, songs and stories. George has acted, written and produced in film and theatre, and his poetry has been published in Folklore and Blue Jay magazines.

# 3 Silent auction

I am currently pursuing my Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Regina in Drawing and Painting.

The landscape featured comes from my trip to the Grasslands National

Park last summer with my brother. I loved the trip in spite of being ill. Even though nature can be unwelcoming and cold, it always seems to draw me in with a sense of warmth. The limited colour palette and the dark lighting reflected how I was feeling prior to painting. I was feeling gloomy and dark in the winter months, but at the same time had many bright moments, similar to my trip.

Caroline Baker has been creating art from jewellery as rehabilitation and therapy for chemo-induced cognitive impairment. Jewellery Art is the perfect way to display estate jewellery.

This chair was created from several broken necklaces, brooches, pendants and earrings in dedication of Mothers, Grandmothers, Great-Grandmothers, and all strong, courageous women who worked endlessly to feed their families. Many grew gardens, raised chickens, pigs, cattle, picked berries, milked cows, and preserved fruits and vegetables .In addition to all their hard work they also grew beautiful flowers. It was due to their nurturing and sacrifices that we were able to grow, flourish and blossom. May we always honour these women of strength and endurance who seldom sat down, who often sat last during large family meals, and those whose chair now sadly sits empty.

Sheila Banga was born and raised in Saskatchewan. She enrolled in a number of formal art classes at the University of Regina in the 80s. Giving up art for a number of years, she re-taught herself drawing and painting techniques. Her landscape paintings and portraits have found homes across Canada. Sheila works in pencil, soft pastel, coloured pencil, and acrylic. She is an active member of the HeARTland Artists’ Guild, Art Gallery of Regina and Artists Who Care. If you are looking to be inspired by a Canadian painter, look no further than Mai Ly. She loves painting nature, portraits and figures in oil, acrylic, and watercolor. Sometimes the subjects are placed in illusionary or surreal settings. Combining the modern techniques with traditional sensitivities, her paintings challenge the art lovers to search for deeper meanings, while at the same time pleasing the eye with depth of color and imaginative composition. Presently Mai Ly belongs to HeARTland Artists’ Guild. She is also a member of Art Gallery of Regina and Artists Who Care.

Saskatchewan, Land of the Living Skies, is home to magnificent sunsets, amazing cloud formations, far-reaching prairies, and flocks of migrating birds. These paintings incorporate well-known Saskatchewan landmarks: the Saskatchewan Legislative Building, Wascana Lake, and our rural countryside. You can see the geese and mallards in the warm and comforting glow of a prairie sunset. The waterfowl thrive wherever grasses and wetlands are available. For most of the year, the geese and ducks can be seen on the lakes, in our beautiful urban and provincial parks, and in rural countryside. In the autumn, when the weather is getting colder, they fly south in spectacular key formations.

Victor Cicansky was born and raised in Regina. He is a graduate of the University of Saskatchewan, the University of Regina, and the University of California, Davis. He also studied at Haystack Mountain School of Art at Deer Isle, Maine. He has taught at the University of Regina for over 20 years, Nova Scotia College of Art, the University of California, Davis and the Banff School of Fine Arts. He is the recipient of many Canada Council grants and awards including the Victoria and Albert Award for Ceramic Sculpture, the Kingsley Annual Award for Sculpture, and the Saskatchewan Order of Merit. Cicansky has many solo and group exhibitions across Canada, the U.S.A., Japan, and Europe, and is represented in many major public and private collections.

His clay work, and more recently his bronze sculptures, reflects his love of the land and his passion for gardening. His work alludes to the natural rhythms of growth, decay, renewal and the wonderful and terrifying power of nature. The sense of wonder he experienced as a young boy lying face down in a freshly-plowed furrow still leaves him awestruck at the magnitude of the garden’s endless biotic enterprise.

Working with fabric and colour has been a creative outlet and form of self expression for me for a very long time. My mother made traditional quilts and I came to appreciate her unique use of design, colour and fabric. I cherish a quilt, an original design of appliquéd Saskatchewan scenes we made together for the Western Development Museum Centennial Quilt Competition. I am currently interested in exploring how colour, fabric and thread can be used as a medium to create portraits, landscapes and smaller works or pieces like “A Tuffet” using quilting techniques in an non-traditional fashion.

Jillian Dempsey is a student at the University of Regina. She is in the Arts Education program, majoring in visual arts. Painting and drawing has been her hobby for years. Her favourite art form is oil painting because of the texture and thickness of the medium. Her painting style is landscapes and surrealistic art. She is also attempting portraits, and now has become interested in using chairs as a canvas.

Not only do I want to teach art, I want to encourage and instill

I've been sewing for close to 50 years and stitching for 30, and I do both for the pure enjoyment of working with fabric. Projects are such that I can pick them up and lay them down at will and there is a real sense of relaxation when I am at work...or should I say play.

I love watching birds. As a young child who grew up on a farm in southeast Saskatchewan, I learned a real appreciation of them from our mother. When we were out in the yard, she would identify birds by appearance or by song, and when driving down the road, we would stop beside a slough to watch them. When I was offered this chair to work with, it immediately spoke to me of a prairie pond. I was able to incorporate the original seat covering of this Czechoslovakian-made chair into the home of one of my favorite water birds, the Mallard Duck. These Mallards are establishing a spring nest in the reeds on the edge of this pond. Watch closely as it won't be long before there are young ducklings enjoying it too!

Cara Driscoll graduated from the University of Regina with a major in visual arts. She completed a spiritual foundation program in 2010. She continues to work as an artist/spiritual director out of her studio at 1335 Scarth Street in Regina.

The back of the pew is a depiction of St. Francis praying to the birds. The front of the pew is inspired by the Cathedral Area in Regina. The two birds continue with the theme “Birds of Prayer”. The sky is orange, inspired by a colour Chagall often used when painting skies. The sky is symbolic of a spiritual content. I strive to depict a connection between spirituality and creativity in my work.

Stacey Fayant (BFA 2002, Bachelor of Arts Honours 2004, University of Regina) works in various mediums including wool. She was raised proudly Metis and belongs to Peepeekisis First Nation. Jason Roland Hipfner (BFA 1999 University of Regina) works in various mediums. He is always doing something creative but particularly enjoys collaborations.

This chair is a collaboration between Stacey and Jason which is informed by their experiences of home and heritage both prior to meeting, and currently, as they share their life together. Jason has painted jams and chutneys preserved by Stacey. Stacey has wet- felted a representation of a Metis sash and embroidered a satellite image of the place where her grandparents lived as roadside allowance people. The synthesis of the two parts reflect their two cultures and their experience of settlement and colonization and how these affect the idea of home.

Actively working as an artist since the early 1970’s, Charlie Fox has exhibited across Canada and internationally. While “media art” – video, film, photography, sound and installation art – have been central to his art practice, since the early days Charlie has been drawing and painting.

“Full Moon Stool” takes a lovely modernist design by Alvar Aalto – the Artek NE60 Children’s Stool – and embellishes the seating surface with a painting representative of the full moon. The legs have been painted a deep dark indigo, to replicate the moon’s supporting home of deep space.

Norma Frizzell is an artist from Strasbourg, Saskatchewan. She works with recycled boiled wool, felted wool and other fabrics creating appliqued designs in themes which bring gladness to the heart. She is best known for her tea cozies. She has sold these at Cuppa Tea in Regina, at Handmade House in Saskatoon, at craft fairs such as Cathedral Village Arts Festival and Bazaart, and elsewhere.

In conversation with one of the G4G grandmothers, Norma talked about using hands in her design because of what G4G does. G4G is a hands- across-the-sea organization, grandmothers in Canada connected to grandmothers in Africa through the work of the Stephen Lewis Foundation.

I chose “Carlo Giambattista” to be my art piece to represent dad and his infectious, joyful self and smile. With recognition to our family on the back, I created an old wood look with our names carved in from 1966-2018. I chose the estimated value based on the number of years the business has been open.

Italian Star Deli is a 3rd generation business from Gina and Frank Giambattista, the founders passing the business on to Carlo and Heather, who then passed it on to Gino and myself. The wood, marble, brick and modern painted spindles symbolize the transitioning times from 1968-2018. The grape vines resemble a geographic map of Gina and Frank’s home surroundings in Campobasso, Italy. Last but not least, the David and the Canadian leaf combined to bring us together, from Italy to Canada. And so much more. I chose the estimated value based on the number of years the business has been open.

Brian Gladwell's work exists in a grey zone between furniture and sculpture, ranging from primarily functional furniture commissions to pieces presented through galleries. Characterized by an ambiguous relationship to function, the gallery work engages a dialogue on furniture conventions by using unexpected materials, like corrugated cardboard or oriented-strand board, to reference the traditions of furniture, architecture and formalist sculpture. His work has been shown in museum exhibitions nationally and internationally, and is included in major public and private collections. He lives and works in Regina.

In the fall of 2014, Laura transitioned from her teaching career to pursuing her practice as a full-time emerging artist. This transition was not intentional; instead, it was something of a serendipitous coincidence. Leading up to this transition Laura struggled with postpartum depression. In an effort to reduce stigma and increase awareness about mental health, Laura is very open about the topic in order to help other women. She resides in Moose Jaw, SK, with her husband, two children and dachshund Lily. If you are ever in the city, feel free to make an appointment to view her studio and home gallery. Visitors are always welcome! She is a member of the Saskatchewan Craft Council.

Laura’s figurative artwork is playful and out of the ordinary. Her female characters are intriguing women with quaint clothing: vintage dresses, striped stockings, fun floral patterns and everything in between. These endearing women are cheerful, clever, and passionate about life.

Although Nikki Jacquin has painted commissioned portraits for 23 years as a full time visual artist, her role as a visual arts instructor has her exploring many mediums and subjects. In 2013 Nikki expanded her business, Nikki's Portraits of Childhood, to offer international group painting holidays. She is now organizing her 2nd plein air class to Cypress Hills, Sask. in July 2018; her 3rd to France in Aug / Sept. 2018 and her 3rd to Cuba in Jan. 2019. On these tours she finds opportunities for her students to meet local artists to discuss culture, life and art. Nikki says, "It is my hope that you will return home with not only great memories of a distant land but also with a heart full of new friends you feel a connection to despite the miles." This year Nikki was honoured to accept the YWCA Women of Distinction Jacquie Schumiatcher Award in the Arts. In "Dragon's Perch" I could see an Art Deco style flare in the chair. I knew I needed to use bold solid areas of colours to play off the design of the chair. Looking at it reminded me of the Art Deco architecture in the Vedado section of Havana, Cuba where I had traveled twice with my art tour groups. These tours and others were a dream realized for me that I can hardly believe happened! The dragonfly to me has always symbolized whimsy, creativity and the realm of dreams becoming a reality.

I love nature and sunlight’s shadows on various seasoned landscapes. I paint with watercolours and acrylics. I am a member of the Brushworks Art Guild.

I chose this rocking chair for its simple lines. An old chair needed a distressed paint application with chalk paint from Mable and Martha’s Vintage Store. Ducks, lilies and bulrushes were painted and scratched into the surface of the wood.

We are a Grade 2 class at Lakeview Elementary School in Regina, SK, Canada.

We have been learning about how important thinking locally and thinking globally is. We aren’t the only people in the world and people need help. Each of us got a chance to work with a partner and paint our part of the table and chairs – we worked as a team. Our inspiration was Africa because that is where our money will go to help. We want to help kids go to school and have safe water and healthy food to eat.

The acrylic paintings of Pauline Leippi are inspired and influenced by her country surroundings. Leippi lives on a farm in Saskatchewan. She recently joined the Brushwork's Art Guild and attended her first show Dec 2017 where she won "The People's Choice Award" for one of her paintings.

When I first saw this chair I fell in love with its elegant country charm. I first decided to paint the entire chair grey but carefully left some worn spots to reflect its age. To bring more elegance to the chair I then introduced some delicate flowers.

I have been living in Regina for 10 years. I often find myself missing the north, the landscape as well as the people. The design I chose to create was largely inspired by the Metis Culture. I chose geometry and a flower because both can represent the cycle of life. One is man-made, the other from Mother Earth.

Inspired by the natural beauty of the prairies, a love of animals, and the encouragement of my mother, I have drawn all my life but discovered the love of painting in 2000. I have been working with clay for many years. This interest began when I really wanted to make a good coffee cup. I began this quest at the University of Regina, extension program, furthered my studies at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, and continued my studies at the Alberta College of Art and Design in Calgary, where I graduated with a major in ceramics and minor in sculpture. I have lived in Saskatchewan ever since. When I agreed to do a chair for Grandmothers 4 Grandmothers I wanted to

incorporate a ceramic element. My ceramic work has evolved from mostly utilitarian pieces to more sculptural and figurative. Along with the figurative work, I explore themes of nature easily found right outside my studio. I have never forgotten living by the ocean, so whimsical fish and mermaids are used as well. So here it is, my chair for A Chair Affair.

When I first saw this chair I was struck by the floral pattern carved into the top rail. As a person of Métis heritage, the pattern reminded me of floral beadwork and I used it as the basis for my design. A chair is a symbol of an invitation to sit down and talk, to build or rebuild a relationship, which is particularly relevant in this era of reconciliation. And while the underlying chair itself is solid, the new surface is fragile and prone to show the nicks and scuffs that will occur.

The chair symbolizes support and has been crafted as a tribute to mothers. The women on the chair are an extension of my community of friends, co-workers and family. I chose that they be anonymous to let their images speak to all mothers. I find it striking how they look so healthy, strong and beautiful in their youth and how they aged and grew into their faces. When you meet such women in your life remember to look beyond the wrinkles, grey hair and failing bodies. See the person before you and celebrate the life that they have lived.

Modern Chair

Artist: Jason Robins

#38 Live auction

Wilf Perreault is a celebrated Saskatchewan artist whose iconic work is inspired by Regina urban landscapes, particularly our everyday back alleys.

Inspiration comes from the ordinary and for ‘A Chair Affair’ you will note the chair in the foreground seems forgotten and ‘set aside’.

Regina Stitchery Guild members: Ellen Basler, Marilyn Bird, Darlene Clifford, Bev Hogg, Andrea Laturnas, Jeannette Luttmer, Gail Montgomery, Sheree Sentes and Carol Storie. The members who participated like to stitch in a variety of techniques, and came together to stitch this piece in a technique called Bargello. The overall design is original, created with sections stitched in different Bargello patterns. The Guild promotes and encourages the practice and knowledge of stitchery in all forms. We are a fellowship of interested persons who wish to increase and share knowledge and maintain high standards of design, colour and workmanship. Members learn and enhance skills through programs and lectures. We are members of the Embroiderers Association of Canada.

We are happy that Grandmothers 4 Grandmothers attended our monthly meeting and gave us an opportunity to participate in their chair auction. This little chair spoke to us, and we could envision it in Bargello (a stitching technique) and a dream catcher filling in the frame back.

I am Dana Rogoschewsky, visual artist from Canada. My process usually involves being in the world and seeing something that sparks my imagination. I reshape the form. I experiment with colour and add different textures. In the end, it’s all play and exploration. My main focuses are on historical and iconic buildings in Canada. This artwork is created with watercolour or acrylic paint. My style is often remarked as semi-realistic with a comic-book twist. My other focuses are on nature, the human form, objects that are compelling, and abstracting colour and form.

I created this piece with the idea of Spring in mind. I wanted the chair to find its home surrounded by beautiful flowers and nature. I can see the chair being rained on, sat on by children, getting dirty and above all, lived in. I wanted it to be something a family saw in their garden and made them smile. Contact:

This piece is a Sisters’ collaboration. Bev has been artist since childhood and is now an active member of Brushwork Artists' Guild. She works in watercolors and acrylics and favors landscapes and animals (both real and whimsical). Keren has a long-time love of textiles, color and nature and this has resulted in a fair number of fabric creations.

This piece needed a foray into 3-dimensions which was new ground and new fun. The "Concert" happened when the stool legs looked like reeds/cattails and because the simple joy of Spring on the prairies makes its own music if only we listen.

Gerri Ann Siwek is a mixed media artist, exploring themes of Nature and the Supernatural World. As an arts educator, she shares her creative art practice in classes and workshops presented throughout Saskatchewan, Canada and abroad. She studied at the Ontario College of Art and Design, Art Students League of New York and the University of Regina. Her works of art have been exhibited in regional and national exhibitions and are included in both private and public collections. She has been the recipient of three major Saskatchewan Arts Board's grants and is currently a member of Flatland Artist Studios Inc.

The urban garden has been a source of inspiration for many of my recent paintings. This sustainable practice in environmentally-friendly settings enriches our neighbourhoods and quality of city living. In this painting, I revisit one of Van Gogh's interior paintings of a chair and place it outside in the garden, alive with sunlight, sunflowers, birds and insects.

Pat was born in Edmonton and grew up in Estevan. She has painted since she was a teenager. She has attended various workshops over the years but is basically self-taught. She is a founding member of the Aurora Art Guild and a member of the Artastic Art Group. Her art has been shown in at solo show, guild shows and, for many years at Bazaart. Pat paints with watercolours and acrylic. The subject of her work is nature – Saskatchewan landscape and flowers in her garden. As Pat paints, her aim is to make the viewer feel the warmth of the sunshine, the freshness or the tartness of lemons.

I enjoyed painting this chair for A Chair Affair. The inspiration for this artwork is “the rest a person feels when they sit down after a day’s work”. It is a time to reflect and let the cares of the day fade away. One thinks of peace and this brings to mind my grandmother’s garden. Every year she planted sweet peas. I loved to just sit there and look at the gentle flowers and smell the beautiful fragrance. I hope this chair brings some enjoyment and a peaceful feeling.

Born and raised in Regina, artist Janice Stefan has been creating from her studio, Sisters Stone and Glass, for almost 20 years. Janice is mainly self-taught but has picked tips and techniques taking various classes throughout the years, and also from collaborations with amazing fellow artists. Every day in her studio is blessing. She primarily sells from her studio at 975 Winnipeg Street, Regina.

The intention from the outset was a bright, fresh creation that would reflect the spring and the very nature of this “chair”, an old fashioned garden bench. Any amount raised for Grandmothers 4 Grandmothers Regina will be appreciated!

Ontario born Deborah Thoms was raised in a farming community in Saskatchewan. Growing up, she won awards for paintings and pen and ink drawings. To further her art education she participated in many workshops: Arts & Ecology, University of Saskatchewan, Emma Lake Kenderdine Campus, University of Regina Fine Arts Program and the University of Regina Extension. She has studied with artists Clint Hunker, Donna Kriekle and Degen Lindner. She works primarily in acrylic and oil media and is known for her vibrant fauvism landscapes painting. She regularly participates in various art workshops and continues to successively sell her work across Canada. My love for nature and prairie landscape has led me to paint the landscapes of Saskatchewan. “The Land of Living Skies” offers inspiration and opportunity as an artist to explore the use of color and content. My prairie landscape paintings capture the natural essence of both sky and land. I love to reflect my emotional responses to the visual and ever changing drama of the prairies. My subjects are not restricted to any particular theme; I like to experiment through simplification of color, subject and composition or combination of all three. I’ve been painting for as long as I can remember. Over the years I have used several different mediums, but my favourite is acrylic paints. I love the process of creating art - it’s my happy place! I currently live in Regina.

The chair has several common elements of my work such as fun colours, flowers, cartoony houses, and balance without symmetry. These create brightness even in a not-so-happy world. I hope what you see makes you smile!

In what seems a lifetime ago I majored in textiles, then enjoyed a thirty-year career in an art museum. In 2002 I took up oil painting. One day, an unexpected gift of fleece returned my interest to textile art. I currently work as a painter, illustrator and textile artist. My chair is an illustrated ‘story’ of a young girl’s journey into the

wilderness. This chair is partnered with a fabric piece.

A chair is support and I chose to represent this through a grid pattern and primary colours. The grid symbolizes the structure in our lives. We all have varying levels of support and that is why it is not a complete grid. The red represents life’s blood, the yellow (sun) is instigation, and the blue (water) it’s enduring quality.

Debbie’s career as an artist began with her rural roots in Saskatchewan. She attended the University of Regina in 1996 obtaining a Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in visual art. Since graduating she has had numerous solo and group exhibitions. Debbie lives in Regina with her husband and two children, works as an arts educator, and is represented by the Assiniboia Gallery.

I have a persistent quest in my work to express beauty, to reach outward and inward, to describe the truth of the human spirit. I am fascinated with the concept that the natural world is designed to be beautiful, inspiring and healing. By making trees my muse I can explore the influence of light and darkness, invoke mystery and intrigue, and express beauty through colour. The creative act of painting is a transformative experience for me, one that is like the seasons – ever changing and rejuvenating.

Launched in 2006, the Stephen Lewis Foundation’s Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign was a

Canadian grassroots response to the emerging crisis faced by African grandmothers as they struggled to

care for millions of children orphaned by AIDS. African grandmothers became parents anew amid the HIV

and AIDS epidemic, putting their grandchildren through school, creating support groups to manage grief,

and delivering comfort and hope through home-based care. Today, these grandmothers teach others

about HIV prevention and treatment, create local savings and loan groups, and sit on land-rights councils.

African grandmothers are leaders, sharing their expertise in their communities and on the international

stage, pressing for their human rights and a hopeful future.
