Counterpoint Community Orchestra

is an incorporated, nonprofit organiza-

tion in the province of Ontario, Canada.

Established in 1984, Counterpoint was

the world's first lesbian/gay/gay-posi-

tive, fully inclusive LGBITTQQIAA orches-

tra. Counterpoint now has a 32-year

tradition of orchestral performances in

the downtown Toronto community.

The Counterpoint Newsletter is pub-

Finding our North Star I

Our au ience will notice a few new faceswithin the orchestra these days.

eve been making some exciting changes that have reinvigorated our commitment to making great music for the community.

Counterpoint welcomes Andrew Chung as our guest conductor for the second concert of the 32nd season. Andrew brings a wealth of experience and a high tandard of musicianship.

As we move through our 32nd year of concert performances, Counterpoint continues to be committed to delivering high calibre performances of music our audiences want to hear. As such, our March concert wilt feature a mix of classical, a broadway medley and movie-themed music.

We are proud of our history of being the first secular, lesbian/gay/gay positive orchestra in Canada and internationally and welcome interested musicians of all persuasions and backgrounds to play or rehearse with us.

We say hello to a new board of directors and sincerely thank the community members that have agreed to join us. We'd like to thank the outgoing board for their contributions.

At this time, our former conductor, Terry Kowatczuk, and concertmaster Emma Vachon-Tweney are moving on to other endeavours. We thank them for their many years of contributions and wish them well.

As always, we welcome your support either through playing, volunteering, donations or corporate sponsorships. We encourage one and alit° join us on March 5th at 7:30 pm at Saint Luke's United Church for a wonderful and festive evening of music.

An old friend and supporter of the Orchestra passed away at the end of May last year. A relentless advocate for social inclusion, Judith Snow also supported the Orchestra for a number of years and helped to increase the size of the stage on which we will play at our March and June concerts. It was her idea to extend the stage for a growing orchestra; and she found justthe right person to do the necessary carpentry.

The Church is currently heading into massive renova-tions next year and we are looking for a new venue for our 33' Season during 2016-2017. She is missed dearly by many hundreds of people in Canada and internation-ally. If you have suggestions about a temporary venue, please contact us at infoeccorchestra.org.

Mr. Chung's educational experience includes the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, the University of Hong Kong, the University of Toronto and the University of

Freiburg, Germany. He has studied under many renowned musicians including Stephen Chenette, Robert Nagel, Henry Nowak, Jeffrey Reynolds, Larry Weeks, Arnold Jacobs and Murray Crewe.

His conducting experience includes work with Raffi Armenian and Agnes Grossman. He has also participated in the Conductors Apprentice Program with the Huntsville (Ontario) Festival of the Arts Orchestra.

Mr. Chung has been Music Director of Silver-thorn Symphonic Winds since 2007. He has also served as Music Director of The Brass Conspiracy and the Chinese Canadian Choir of Toronto. Andrew Chung

Meet our Guest Conductor Andrew Chung joins Counterpoint Community Orchestra as guest conductor for our March 5th Concert. Andrew brings a wealth of expertise to the rote, drawing from his personal achievements as principal trumpet with the Hong Kong Chamber Orchestra and the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra among many others.

While attending the University of Toronto, he was appointed Music Director of the Pickering Philharmonic Orchestra and Assistant Conductor of the University of Toronto Symphony Orchestra. He has also guest conducted Hart House Orchestra, North York Concert Orchestra, Toronto Philharmonia, the Korean Canadian Symphony Orchestra, Cathedral Bluffs Symphony Orchestra, No rthda le Concert Band, the Toronto Chinese Youth Orchestra, Mississauga Youth Orchestra and Toronto Youth Wind Orchestra.

For our March 5 concert we focus on Living Our Passion, which is playing music, engaging our

audiences and contributing to our LGBTCI+ and larger Toronto communities. In other words

we're still OUT and after 32 Seasons we continue to be Proud of these contributions and gifts.

* We're excited to interpret Schubert's Symphony Number Eight, the passionate

"Unfinished Symphony". Was it really unfinished? There is much speculation as to its appar-

ently incomplete state. In fewer than 32 years, Schubert came up with over 600 songs (tieder) in the romantic style, nine symphonies, several masses and operas, a resplendent body of

chamber music and some exceptional works for the piano. Johann Mayrhofer was his room

mate for a number of years and was almost certainly Gay, and Schubert was attracted to

Mayrhofer's poetry interwoven with "homoerotic references", according to one authority.

*Popular tunes are always a treat. Rogers and Harnerstein's The King and I is fa miliar to our au-

diences and we invite you to sing along with us as we play a medley of its songs. Also, two

movie medlies will feature The Magnificent Seven and the theme song from "The Mission".

*For having sold the most tickets at the December concert, Alex Lin won the right to select a

piece and has selected CavaLLeria Rusticana (Intermezzo) by Pietro Mascagni.

*Beethoven hasn't been Left out and we feature his Egmont Overture. It is said that Beethoven

scratched out the dedication to Bonaparte when he crowned himself Emperor in 1804.
