ARROGATE REENTERS RACING'S SPOTLIGHTBy Michael Adolphsont @AdolphsonRacing

Since crossing the globe to con-quer international foes in the

Dubai World Cup Sponsored by Emirates Airline (G1), a certain son of Unbridled's Song has been quietly biding his time as his younger and possibly future combatants fought it out in the first two legs of the Triple Crown. Now, with no crown on the line at the Belmont Stakes (G1) June 10, the focus leans its way back to racing's most valuable player.

The king has returned.Actually, he never left, but

Juddmonte Farms' Arrogate—the top-ranked horse in the world who has won the world's three richest dirt races in his last three starts—has resumed serious training with conditioner Bob Baffert at his Santa Anita Park base.

"I gave him a little freshening and he's back in training now, galloping, and he's filled out," Baffert said. "I can see a big difference in him and can tell in his body that he's feeling great. He's always been a very good-feeling horse. When you have a horse like that and you're trying to get the weight back on, it's tough, so I went as easy as I could.

"He looks better than he ever has. He was 1,150 pounds when he got back from Dubai and I weighed him a couple weeks ago and he was 1,217 pounds. He's got it all back and he's the kind of horse who needs to keep the weight on, because he runs hard."

Arrogate's pre-Breeders' Cup agenda could include any or all of a trio of races in California, including

the San Diego Handicap (G2), the TVG Pacific Classic (G1), and the Awesome Again Stakes (G1). Baffert, who won his third World Cup in March with the slate-gray runner, hasn't made any concrete plans—but mentioned that he will know in the next few weeks if the San Diego is an option.

"He took (the Dubai trip) pretty well," the trainer said. "He's a tough horse and his athleticism is incredible. He's shipped a lot of miles—New York and back, Florida and back, Dubai and back—and there's just something in his genetic makeup that makes him as great as he is; that he's able to do that. To have a horse of this caliber, like (2015 Triple Crown winner) American Pharoah, it's nice to do my job and just keep him healthy. We know the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) is the goal, but how we get there? I'm not sure yet. The thing about him and training for people like

Juddmonte is the horse comes first and they just want you to do what's right, so the pressure is on me."

In the meantime, Baffert and Juddmonte's North American manager Garrett O'Rourke are still reveling in the world champion's impossible last-to-first victory in the Middle East.

"After Dubai they became true believers," Baffert said. "Even I thought, 'this can't be happening—he's just way too incredible' when he came down the stretch. That's what makes racing great and keeps us going. We are always looking for a horse like him who will 'wow' us like that."

"I am still basking in what he has done," O'Rourke added. "It's so fun to go back and watch the videos of his races. I thought nothing would match the Breeders' Cup for pure excitement, but Dubai even surpassed that because he was put

in such an impossible situation he shouldn't have been able to overcome. It was one of those situations where, in hindsight, I really appreciate how he was able to showcase how brilliant he is.

"The biggest challenge Bob had was keeping his feet on the ground when he got back. Bob decided earlier this week to get back to work and let a little bit of steam out of the kettle, and the horse seems to be in tremendous form. He looks just magnificent, has definitely put the flesh back on and got the square edges all rounded again. Fingers crossed we can keep him in the same happy progression. He's had more frequent flier miles in six months than most horses have in a lifetime, so now it's time to focus on the end-goal and stay sensible."

In addition to its $17-million-earning flag-bearer, Saudi Prince Khalid Abdullah's Juddmonte operation could have a very exciting summer this side of the Atlantic. Chad Brown-trained Time Test, a regally bred multiple grade 2-winning son of top international sire Dubawi and group-1 winning mare Passage of Time, will look for his first win at the highest level when he attempts to follow in the footsteps of Juddmonte's Brown-trained champion Flintshire in the June 10 Woodford Reserve Manhattan Stakes (G1T). Second by a nose over yielding ground May 6 in his stateside bow, the Fort Marcy Stakes (G3T) at Belmont Park, he should be one of the favorites in the 10-furlong event. A grade 1-placed middle-distance specialist, the bay 5-year-old horse also has the Arlington Million XXXV (G1T) on his radar at the same trip in August if all goes well.

"The goal of bringing Time Test over to America, despite plenty of interest in him as a stallion prospect, was to get a grade 1 win out of him," O'Rourke said. "We have the family and he's a homebred, but we'd love to give him the opportunity to perform the way we think he can and his form suggests he can. He was expected to win the (Fort Marcy), but he should be a lot fitter for the Manhattan and slightly better ground will suit him. He has run consistently well enough to deserve a grade 1 win. There aren't many stallion prospects with grade 1 form who have the kind of pedigree he has, so it would add to his value and to our enjoyment."

In the Bill Mott barn, Juddmonte has an exciting and improving sophomore filly in Lockdown, a full-sister to champion Close Hatches who finished a valiant third in the Longines Kentucky Oaks (G1) May 5 after a horrid trip.

"I give Bill a lot of credit for running in the Oaks," O'Rourke said. "We were 36-1 in the Oaks and could have been 5-1 in the Black-Eyed Susan (G2), and he made the decision. We gave him no pressure on which way to go and she ran a great race. She's just a magnificent-looking filly and is taller, leggier, and more of a grinder than her sister. Our main summer goal will be the Alabama (Stakes, G1) and possibly the CCA Oaks (G1) with her. I really hope she grows into her frame and continues to improve."

O'Rourke also confirmed the Ballerina Stakes (G1) at Saratoga Race Course and the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (G1) at Del Mar are the goals for multiple grade 1-winning Brown trainee Paulassilverlining—a mare acquired as a future mate for Arrogate—while multiple graded stakes-winning Mott trainee Suffused will aim toward the big grade 1 events of the summer for turf fillies and mares, including a possible tilt at the Beverly D. (G1T). One to watch is talented French group 3 winner Antonoe who, like Lockdown, is a daughter of Juddmonte's First Defence. The filly has long been highly regarded and will possibly point toward grade 1 company this summer for Brown.

"If you are in an operation that wants to be involved in the top races, they begin around (Kentucky) Derby time, follow through the summer, and end up at the Breeders' Cup," O'Rourke said. "It's the time of year you want to be concentrating on. For now, things are looking somewhat promising to keep Prince Khalid smiling though the summer."

As far as possible challenges to the mighty Arrogate through the summer and fall, O'Rourke is quick to bring things into perspective.

"No one knew who Arrogate was this time last year," he concluded. "There's plenty of opportunity for more superstars to emerge. No one knows how good Could Computing is after only a few races and we have every reason to believe that he could make huge strides forward. Classic Empire is a class horse who has been unlucky, and he could prove to be a top-class horse at this level. Whoever comes, we look forward to the challenge." BH

ALWAYS DREAMING OFFICIALLY RULED OUT OF BELMONT STAKESBy Alicia Wincze Hughest @BH_AHughes

Always Dreaming, winner of the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1), will bypass the

June 10 Belmont Stakes (G1) as expected and be fresh-ened for a summer campaign, Terry Finley of West Point Thoroughbreds confirmed May 26.

The decision to skip the final leg of the Triple Crown was one trainer Todd Pletcher was leaning heavily in favor of after Always Dreaming faded to eighth in the May 20 Preakness Stakes (G1) after being pressed by champion Classic Empire through the early fractions.

With the Preakness representing the fifth start this year for the son of Bodemeister and no Triple Crown on the line, Finley said the ownership group opted to regroup and point for the Travers Stakes (G1) at Saratoga Race Course Aug. 26, with either the Jim Dandy Stakes (G2) or Betfair.com Haskell Invitational Stakes (G1) as possible preps.

"Todd ended up conferring with the majority partners (Vinnie Viola and Anthony Bonomo) and I think they just want to take a deep breath with him," said Finley, whose West Point Thoroughbreds owns a 25% interest in Always Dreaming. "There are some really exciting spots for him later in the year. Certainly the big one is the Travers. So that was the thinking—we take a pause here and regroup."

Owned by the partnership of MeB Racing, Brooklyn Boyz Stable, Teresa Viola, St Elias Stable, Siena Farm, and West Point Thoroughbreds, Always Dreaming captured the Kentucky Derby by 2 3/4 lengths May 6 in his fourth straight win since joining Pletcher's barn last September.

Disappointing as it was to see the dark bay colt struggle home over the Pimlico Race Course surface, Finley has kept the perspective of what Always Dreaming has already achieved in the forefront.

"As my good friend Lynn Whiting said... the Derby never washes off, and that's a very apt way to address it and to look at it," Finley said. "We're never going to let the Derby wash off of us and that's something they're never going to take away from Always Dreaming."

While Always Dreaming was officially declared out of the 1 1/2-mile classic Friday, graded stakes winner J Boys Echo is likely to move forward to New York,

according to Jason Loutsch of owner Albaugh Family Stable.

Loutsch said J Boys Echo, who finished 15th in the Kentucky Derby, is slated to work at Churchill Downs May 27 and will head to the Belmont Stakes as long as he emerges from the move with the green light from trainer Dale Romans.

"If all goes good tomorrow and he comes back good on Sunday, we'll go," said Loutsch, who added a jockey assignment is still being sorted out.

Though J Boys Echo had a troubled run in the Kentucky Derby, Loutsch pointed to the fact that the son of Mineshaft captured the March 4 Gotham Stakes (G3), finishing 3 1/2 lengths in front of eventual Preakness Stakes winner Cloud Computing.

"With us beating him in the Gotham it gave us a little bit of justification for that race," Loutsch said. "I think a lot of people were maybe discounting that race and to see that horse come back and win the Preakness, it tells you that Cloud Computing is a quality horse. So we're hoping with 'J Boy,' we're just going to draw a line through the Derby. He got hammered out of the gate and never ran a lick."

John Oxley's Classic Empire, runner-up in the Preakness, returned to the track for the first time since his Baltimore trip, having an easy one-mile jog at Churchill Downs Friday morning.

At Santa Anita Park Friday, Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (G2) winner Irap worked six furlongs in 1:14 2/5 in preparation for his expected Belmont Stakes run. BH

ZAYAT PINHOOKING VENTURE RETURNS LARGE PROFITBy Ron Mitchellt @BH_RMitchell

After winning the 2015 Triple Crown with American Pharoah, Ahmed Zayat and his son, Justin, were

seeking new horizons within the racing industry and decided to try purchasing yearlings last year with the intent of selling them in 2-year-old sales this season.

If the first year is any indication, the Zayat pinhooking venture has a good future ahead.

After an Into Mischief filly bought at Keeneland's September yearling sale for $180,000 fetched $425,000 at this week's Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-year-olds in training sale, the eight Zayat pinhooks bought for a total $1.63 million had sold for more than $4.1 million, a profit (excluding expenses) of more than $2.5 million.

Topping the group was a Congrats filly acquired for $250,000 at Keeneland that sold for $1.7 million at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales March 2-year-olds in training sale.

The yearlings were bought by Patti Miller, vice president of Equine Biomechanics & Exercise

Physiology, which offers equine partnerships and other services, including analytics.

Miller said that from the outset Zayat wanted to buy and sell quality horses, dispelling any notion that the prominent owner and breeder would retain the best for his own stable.

"He went into it thinking that if he was going to start this, and do it year after year, he was going to do it the right way and sell good horses," Miller said while attending the Midlantic sale. "When you work with Mr. Zayat you realize he is just an exceptional manager. He manages trainers, manages horses, he thinks about the game. He's a smart guy and he's a nice guy too."

Miller credits Zayat, his son Justin, and others on the team with the program's success.

EQB president Jeff Seder provides biomechanical analysis, including a horse's gait and heart measurements. "By the time he gets done it looks very simple, but that's because he's a brainy guy too," Miller said of Seder.

In addition to Miller and Seder, the team that selected the yearlings included Dr. Stephen Selway, the long-time veterinarian for Zayat Stables.

"He's the toughest vet in the world." Miller said of Selway. "He sees them all and he vets them all. One thing I can tell you is, he is very strict. But when those

horses got to the 2-year-old sales they vetted well and stayed sound."

The yearlings were sent to Kevin and J. B. McKathan in Florida to be prepped and were offered at the 2-year-old sales by consignors Eddie Woods, Ciaran Dunne's Wavertree Stables, and Jimbo and Torie Gladwell's Top Line Sales.

Smiling at the credit she gets from others for the pinhooking program's success since the horses were bought in the name of EQB and herself, Miller says, "When you work with a group of exceptional people, all of sudden you look bright. I think I am just a victim of very good circumstances. The guy at the helm is a brilliant sonofagun. He picks everybody out. We're happy to be part of it." BH

ITSINTHEPOST ON A ROLL HEADING TO WHITTINGHAMBy Jeremy Balant @BH_JBalan

Trainer Jeff Mullins admits a rough run of sec-ond-place finishes with Itsinthepost were hard to

swallow, but the payoff ended up being worth it.The seconds were mostly tight. It started with a

neck loss in an optional-claiming turf allowance at Del Mar in November, then came a runner-up effort in the off-the-turf San Gabriel Stakes (G3) and a half-length defeat in the San Marcos Stakes (G2T) back on grass in February.

"For a long time we were disheartened by a few of those losses, but the thing with him was the mile and a half," Mullins said of the gelding owned by Red Baron's Barn. "That's what made the difference."

Stretched out to 12 furlongs in the San Luis Rey Stakes (G2T) in March at Santa Anita Park, the 5-year-old French-bred son of American Post found his calling. Itsinthepost stalked and pounced to break

through by a length, then shipped to Keeneland to win the Dixiana Elkhorn Stakes (G2T) at the same distance April 22.

His next start, however, won't be in his wheelhouse. The May 28 Charles Whittingham Stakes (G2T) is at 1 1/4 miles, the same distance as the San Marcos, and Mullins acknowledges it might be a bit short.

"There's just really no other options right now and we need to get a race or two in him to keep him tight," Mullins said. "I figure we'll walk over there for (the) $200,000 (purse) and if he can get it done at a mile and a quarter, great. He's beaten most of the horses in there anyway."

Back from the San Luis Rey are the four horses who finished immediately behind Itsinthepost in that race.

Syntax was closest, a length back in second, and will look to cure his own bout of seconditis following a runner-up finish in the San Juan Capistrano (G3T) last time out.

Multiple graded winner Ashleyluvssugar came in another 1 3/4 lengths back in the San Luis Rey, and won his only previous start at 10 furlongs—the 2016 John Henry Turf Championship (G2T).

Fourth-place San Luis Rey finisher Liam the Charmer is also undefeated at the Whittingham distance, with two 1 1/4-mile conditional allowance wins surrounding his stakes run.

The final San Luis Rey horse also entered in the Whittingham is fifth-place finisher Texas Ryano, who last won the Hollywood Turf Cup (G2T) at Del Mar in November, but has finished off the board in his three graded starts in 2017. BH

GRADED STAKES WINNER DESTIN SET FOR 2017 DEBUTBy Alicia Wincze Hughest @BH_AHughes

Multiple graded stakes winner Destin, runner-up in last

year's Belmont Stakes Presented by NYRA Bets (G1), is set to make his first start in nearly nine months when he goes to post May 28 in a 1 1/16-mile allowance optional claiming race at Belmont Park.

Owned by Twin Creeks Racing and Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, Destin has been cooling his heels since running ninth in the Travers Stakes (G1) Aug. 27—the worst finish of his nine-race career. The 4-year-old son of Giant's Causeway previously captured the Sam F. Davis Stakes (G3) and Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby (G2) en route to the 2016 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1), and finished a respectable sixth in the first leg of the Triple Crown off an eight-week layoff.

The full brother to grade 1 winner Creative Cause came within a whisker of taking the 1 1/2-miles Belmont Stakes last June, getting nailed on the wire by Creator after sitting just off the early pace set by Creator's stablemate Gettysburg.

Randy Gullatt of Twin Creeks Racing maintained last year they had Destin pegged all along as was one whose real progression would come as he got older. Following his disappointing Travers outing—which was preceded by a third-place run in the Jim Dandy Stakes (G2)— they opted to put the gray

colt away for the rest of the season with the purpose of testing that theory.

"We're ready to get him back going," Gullatt said May 26. "He had a long campaign last year and around the Travers he just seemed to be tailing off, so we decided to give him a vacation. We're taking it one step at a time with him this year. We'll see how this first race goes. Hopefully it will get us on track for something important this summer."

Trained by Todd Pletcher, Destin has turned in seven timed moves since returning to the tab at Palm Beach Downs March 31 and

most recently clocked a bullet five-furlong drill in 1:00.75 May 11.

"The good news is, Todd has been saying all along that he's very happy with him," Gullatt said. "He's very sound and hopefully we'll have a lot more races from him to talk about down the line."

Bred in Kentucky by James C. Weigel and Taylor Made Stallions, Destin has won three of nine starts with $730,700 in earnings. He will break from the outside post in the seven-horse field Sunday with Hall of Famer John Velazquez in the irons. BH

FAMILIAR FACES HIGHLIGHT NEW YORK SHOWCASEBy Evan Hammondst @BH_EHammonds

An opportunity to run for $200,000 in a one-turn mile

has enticed several members of the New York-bred community to spend their Memorial Day at Belmont Park. The Commentator Stakes has a strong field of 10 older runners, while Critical Eye Stakes for older fillies and mares drew 11.

And what would a state-bred grass race be without long-time rivals Lubash, King Kreesa, and Kharafa? That trio and six others will mix it up in the $125,000 Kingston Stakes at a mile on the turf.

All told there are six stakes on the Big Apple Showcase card for New York-breds May 29, with purses worth $900,000.

Weekend Hideway, who took last year's Commentator by 3 3/4 lengths, returns—and the 7-year-old Speightstown horse had a pair of sprint sharpeners in getting ready for the summer season. A beaten favorite last time out behind Celtic Chaos in the seven-furlong Affirmed Success Stakes—along with a pair of breezes in May—will have the Red and Black Stable runner ready for the mile.

Also looking to move forward is Jump Sucker Stable and Oak Bluff Stables' Governor Malibu, who sports a 1-3-1 Belmont mark from six starts and was second last year as a 3-year-old in both the Peter Pan Stakes (G2) and Jim Dandy Stakes (G2). In between he ran a solid fourth behind Creator in the Belmont Stakes Presented by NYRA Bets (G1).

Added to the mix is Royal Posse, who won four straight stakes last season including the Empire Classic Handicap, but has yet to reach that form in three outings this year in open company. The 6-year-old son of Posse certainly likes "Big Sandy," with a 3-5-1 mark in 11 career starts.

The power of the program can be witnessed in Royal Posse's millionaire status and the $812,751 earned by Empire Dreams, who will break from post 10 for West Point Thoroughbreds. The Empire Classic winner in 2015 also has an affinity for Belmont Park but will be making his first start since a runner-up effort in the Alex M. Robb Stakes on New Year's Eve.

The Critical Eye offers a well-balanced bunch, with a nod toward Kennesaw Mountain Racing's Picco Uno, a winner of her last four—in state-bred and open allowance optional claiming company—and outsider Kathryn the Wise, a winner of both of her starts, her last coming April 5, dusting a field of state-breds by 12 lengths at 1-9

going 6 1/2 furlongs. Lawrence Goichman's filly is another runner from the first crop of Uncle Mo.

The Kingston appears more like a family reunion than horse race, as Lubash (post 2), King Kreesa (post 4), and Kharafa (post 9) have a combined 45 starts over the turf at Belmont.

The 10-year-old Lubash polished off 2016 with a win via DQ in Gulfstream Park West's Tropical Turf Handicap (G3T), and the son of Freud made his 2017 debut April 29 with a third-place outing, beaten a length, in Gulfstream Park's Miami Mile Stakes (G3T).

Eight-year-old King Kreesa is also adept stepping into the graded stake waters. Now under the care of Linda Rice, he makes his seasonal debut in the Kingston.

Paul Braverman and Tim Pinch's Kharafa, also 8, was third in this race last year behind Tapitation and King Kreesa.

All three, though, must watch Trinity Farm's Macagone, who starred April 9 at Aqueduct Racetrack with a 1 1/2-length score in the open Danger's Hour Stakes. BH

FIRST STARTER IS FIRST WINNER FOR INTELLOBy Eric Mitchellt @BH_EMitchell

Intello, winner of the 2013 Prix du Jockey Club (French Derby, G1) and a freshman sire, got his first

winner with his first starter May 25 when his daughter Sonjeu took a maiden race by 2 1/2 lengths at Tarbes Racecourse.

Sonjeu, out of the group-placed Montjeu daughter Wait and See, ran the 1,100 meters (about 5 1/2 furlongs) in 1:05 4/5 against six other challengers. The filly was bred in France by Sydney Vidal and later sold to Wertheimer & Frere at the 2016 Arqana Deauville October yearling sale for €75,000 ($132,024) out of the Ombreville consignment. She was the only horse brothers Alain and Gerard Wertheimer bought at the sale.

Wait and See, who finished second in a group 3 stakes in France, is the second black-type runner produced by her dam Dareen, by Rahy, who also produced German stakes winner Daksha (Authorized).

Intello raced as a homebred for Wertheimer & Frere,

going undefeated at 2, and won three graded stakes on his way to highweight honors in France in 2013 and earnings of $2,206,112. Besides the French Derby, the son of Galileo won the Prix du Prince d'Orange (G3) and the Prix Messidor (G3) and finished third in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (G1) to Treve and Orfevre.

The German-bred stallion stands at Haras du Quesnay in France for €25,000. BH

FIRST BLACK-TYPE WINNER FOR FRESHMAN HAVANA GOLDBy Eric Mitchellt @BH_EMitchell

Tweenhills Farm & Stud's freshman sire Havana Gold garnered his first black-type winner May 25 when his

son Havana Grey won the Better Odds With Matchbook National Stakes by a length at Sandown Park in England.

Havana Grey has now won twice and finished second once in three starts for owners Global Racing Club and Elaine Burke, wife of the colt's trainer Karl Burke. Kelly Burke, the trainer's daughter, told Racing Post the colt's next start is likely to be the five-furlong Norfolk Stakes (G2) at Royal Ascot. He won the five-furlong listed National Stakes in :59.93

Bred in Great Britain by Mickley Stud and Lady Lonsdale, Havana Grey is the first foal out of Blanc de Chine (by Dark Angel), whose second dam, Bloudan, is a half sister to Goffs Irish One Thousand Guineas (G1) winner Al Bahathri. Bloudan is also the producer of multiple graded stakes winner Radevore.

Havana Grey was sold as a weanling for 42,000 guineas (US$66,296) at the Tattersalls December Foal sale, then sold as a yearling for €70,000 ($78,141) through the Arqana Deauville August yearling sale to BBA Ireland.

Havana Gold is a group 1-winning son of Teofilo out of group 3 winner Jessica's Dream (Desert Style). He won the Somerville Tattersalls Stakes (G3) at 2 and at 3 won the Prix Jean Prat (G1). He stands at Tweenhills for £7,000. BH

TAPWRIT WOULD GIVE TAPIT SHOT AT THIRD BELMONT WINBy Frank Angstt @BH_FAngst

Should the connections of Tapwrit decide to enter the Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby

(G2) winner in this year's Belmont Stakes (G1), it would provide his sire, Tapit, a shot at history.

Tapit, of course, has piled up accolades while leading the North American sire list each of the past three seasons. A Belmont Stakes victory by Tapwrit, or any other starter by the sire in the 1 1/2-mile classic, would give Tapit three Belmont winners in the past four years.

The only other sire who has had three Belmont winners in four years was Lexington, who had General Duke win the second edition of the race in 1868, followed by Kingfisher in 1870 and Harry Bassett in 1871. Lexington picked up a fourth winner when Duke of Magenta won the 1878 Belmont.

Tapit scored his initial Belmont win as a sire when Tonalist won the 2014 edition, then last year Creator scored for the multiple leading sire. Should Tapit's progeny score this year—besides having three Belmont winners in

four years—he'd become just the sixth horse to have back-to-back winners, joining Lexington, Australian, Commando, Man o' War, Gallant Fox, and Count Fleet.

Count Fleet is the most recent sire to have back-to-back Belmont winners, accomplished in 1951 and 1952 with Counterpoint and One Count, respectively.

Other potential sire storylines going into this year's race include Pioneerof the Nile going for

his second Belmont win after seeing American Pharoah close out his Triple Crown sweep in 2015. That second win could come from Classic Empire, who is being pointed to the Belmont and figures to be the favorite.

Union Rags, who won the 2012 Belmont, has a potential Belmont starter from his first crop this year in TwinSpires.com Louisiana Derby (G2) runner-up Patch. Fourteen previous Belmont winners have sired at least one Belmont winner. BH

HONG KONG CHAMPION ABLE FRIEND RETIREDBy BloodHorse Staff

Hong Kong champion Able Friend has been retired from

racing. He will parade in front of his fans after the third race on the May 28 card at Sha Tin during a farewell ceremony to honor his outstanding career.

The Shamardal gelding raced in the famous black and gold-trimmed silks of the late Dr. Cornel Li and one time topped the Longines World's Best Racehorse Rankings. A superstar with a powerful turn-of-foot, Able Friend achieved the highest-rating by any galloper in the history of Hong Kong horse racing. He was the Longines WBRR world champion sprinter in 2015, Hong Kong's Horse of the Year and champion miler, and a five-time group 1 winner.

"He was the equal of any horse on the planet at his peak," said John Moore, Able Friend's trainer. "He'll be known as a legend here. He's earned his place in Hong Kong folklore as that strapping, big chestnut with the electrifying turn-of-foot. The public really took to him. He had them in awe with some of the things he did. He just obliterated the best here in Hong Kong.

"It was great that this horse came to Dr. Li," Moore continued. "He would be any owner's dream, a horse of that caliber, and Dr. Li was a true horseman—he knew his bloodstock, he loved his racing, and he deserved to own a horse like Able Friend, a standout champion.

"Personally, it was a great privilege for me to have had the

opportunity to be involved with Able Friend—to identify him, to see him go from provincial racing to being, at one time, the world's highest-rated horse, reaching that all-time high rating (for a Hong Kong horse) of 127. It was an honor to be given that stewardship, to guide him through his career. It was a dream. While we'll miss him, I'm sure when he gets back to the farm where he was born he'll enjoy a lovely retirement."

Moore's bloodstock arm purchased the hulking chestnut for AU$550,000 (US$570,020) out of the 2011 Inglis Easter yearling sale when he went through the ring as Lot 409. Able Friend will retire to the Ramsey family's picturesque Turangga Farm in New South Wales where he was foaled, his dam being the Volksraad mare Ponte Piccolo.

He ends his career with a record of 13 wins from 26 total starts, with earnings of $7,866,625. Standouts among his many highlights include a knock-out win in the 2014 Longines Hong Kong

Mile (G1), a dominant score in the 2015 Champions Mile (G1), and, in that same year, two astonishing performances in the Queen's Silver Jubilee Cup (G1) and the Premier Bowl Handicap (G2).

Joao Moreira, who rode the Australian-bred 16 times for seven wins, including each of his grade 1 scores, said Able Friend is probably the best horse he has ever ridden.

"He means a lot to me because he gave me my first group 1 win in Hong Kong (the Hong Kong Classic Mile). He gave me my first international group 1 race here," Moreira said. "Obviously very few horses here have given me what he has. I'm not talking about prize money, but I'm talking about pride. To be associated with such a nice horse that has had such a great career, like him, I can't ask for much more. Everything that has come from him has been very special, he has a place in my heart and I'm very happy that he is going to have a beautiful life in a paddock." BH

ORDAK DAN EARNS A PLACE IN THE BREEDERS' CUP TURFBy BloodHorse Staff

Capturing his third Gran Premio 25 de Mayo (G1) at San Isidro

Racecourse in four years, the irre-pressible 8-year-old gelding Ordak Dan has earned another trip back to the Longines Breeders' Cup Turf (G1T) through the Breeders' Cup Challenge series.

The bay Argentina-bred son of Hidden Truth is owned by Stud Misterio and trained by Juan Carlos “Carly” Etchechoury. He won the 1 1/2-mile test May 25 by three lengths win over Don Archi. The final time was 2:38.64 over a turf course listed as heavy.

Ordak Dan broke well from the third post position in the 12-horse field, and stalked front runners Areco Run and favored Sixties Song

in third place for the first mile. Sixties Song then ranged up to take the lead and held it through 1 1/4 miles when jockey Eduardo Ortega Pavon powered Ordak Dan to the inside of Sixties Song and into the lead, widening the margin to three lengths along the rail and through the wire.

Don Archi closed to be second behind a tiring Sixties Song, who was followed by Thabor in fourth. Dulce Sam, Stivers, Must Go On, Areco Run, El Margot, Full Throttle, Harlan's Blue, and Frances Net completed the order of finish.

The winner came into Thursday's race off a seventh-place finish March 5 in the 1 1/2-mile Gran Premio Latinoamericano (G1) in Chile and prior to that was third in the 1 1/4-mile Gran Premio Miguel Alfredo Martinez de Hoz (G1) at San Isidro.

Ordak Dan first qualified for the

Breeders' Cup Turf when he won 2015 Gran Premio 25 de Mayo. He finished ninth in the Turf that year.

The Gran Premio 25 de Mayo was the second of five Breeders' Cup Challenge races to be run in South America this year. On May 1, the 4-year-old Kiriaki won the Gran Premio Criadores (G1) at Palermo and earned an automatic berth into the Longines Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1). Coming up May 28 is the third South American Challenge race, the 1 1/4-mile Gran Premio Club Hipico Falabella (G1), for 3-year-olds and up, in Santiago, Chile, with the winner earning an automatic berth into the Breeders' Cup Mile (G1T).

The Breeders' Cup Challenge series, now in its 11th year, comprises 81 stakes races run in 13 countries whose winners receive free berths and fees paid into a corresponding race of the Breeders'

Cup World Championships, which will be held, for the first time, at Del Mar Nov. 3-4. Breeders' Cup will also provide a $40,000 travel allowance for all starters based outside of North America to compete in the World Championships. BH
