Greetings Saukville Elementary Students, Parents/Guardians, and Community Members:

I hope you enjoy this issue of the Eagle Edition as it highlights some of the great things happening here at Saukville Elementary School. We have now completed an outstanding second quarter and our students are learning and having tons of fun.

We had a great turn out last week for our Winter Wonderland. For those of you who could not attend we had crafting, face painting, a bounce house, and the always popular cake walk. The gym was filled with lots of games run by high school volunteers. The whole building was buzzing and it was wonderful to see so many families in attendance. I personally want to thank all the parents and staff who volunteered to make it such a great event for our students.

In the following weeks we have parent/teacher Conferences. Our staff is very excited to discuss your child’s education and to show how far they have come during the first semester. I am also available if for any reason you would like stop by and discuss anything with me, or just let your teacher know if you would like me to join your conference. I hope to see everyone at conferences, but if for some reason you are unable to attend this newsletter should give you an idea of how amazing our students and staff are at SES!

And as always… GO EAGLES!

Physical Education News By Mrs. Piontek Jump Rope for Heart!: Students were sure excited about the Zoo Animals this year! For a $5 donation, students were able to receive their first zoo animal! With a $20 donation, students received a second zoo animal! With an ONLINE donation, students received a zoo animal too! And with $85 online, students received a fourth zoo animal! There were two other zoo animals students could also earn, and will receive when the thank you gifts are delivered! Our event was held on Wednesday, February 15 and we raised over $5,000!!

Health/Home Fitness: We are getting ready to begin one of our bigger health units on Nutrition and a Healthy Food Plate! Some of the areas we talk about include healthy eating choices, balancing food with activity, and how sugar can be a problem.

Shoes: Many students are forgetting to bring their tennis shoes back to school or they have shoes that are too small, have broken laces, or just don’t Velcro close anymore. Take the time during conferences to check out your child’s shoes. It is important to have safe gym shoes that are tight on their feet and have good support so that your child can do their best each class! Also with the snow and wet, please always have an extra pair of socks in their back pack!

Gym Attire: Many students complain of being too warm during physical education class. We talk often about dressing in layers so that they are able to play in a t-shirt if they are hot. Help students dress for physical education days!

Ms. Schmalz’s class has been loving their read aloud book The BFG. In the book, this creative author describes a drink that giants have called Frobscottle. We enjoyed trying this tasty treat just like the giants in our story!

Hello SES families! SPA has been busy with events and fundraising for the school. The cookie sale in December was a success as usual. The students really enjoy coming down and choosing cookies that are baked by our wonderful SES families! We just wrapped up Winter

Wonderland, which is our biggest fundraiser of the school year. It was a successful night and lots of fun was had by all! A special thank you to all the volunteers who helped with planning and execution of the event. It takes an army to pull off such a big event and we appreciate all who helped! Our spring fundraiser with Clubs Choice is underway. The fall fundraiser with them was such a success that we decided to try a spring one. All money raised will go towards the books that were purchased for the literacy program. Planning is underway for High Interest Day on Friday, May 5. Please consider helping with this fun school time event! Watch Tidbits for more information. Lastly, remember all those who volunteer for SPA related events, their child will receive a water balloon to throw at Mr. Brakke the last week of school! The past “torture” event was taping Mr. Brakke to the wall during the lunch hour. Unfortunately he didn’t hang like we expected but the students has so much fun taping him!

“Note-Worthy” News from the Music Classroom  By Mrs. Berchem The music room has been bustling with singing, instrument playing, and creative movement during second quarter! Kudos go out to all of our awesome SES students, for a fantastic job with our winter program on Dec 21, ‘A Season of Peace’! Students also enjoyed the special performance by our very own SES Staff choir, in our version of Hot Chocolate (from Polar Express), during the morning program!

*The 3rd and 4th graders have been learning and reviewing the lines and spaces of the treble clef staff, and learning to count rhythms. We’re continuing to utilize our SMART Music reading program for our 4th grade recorder unit, and to help us with skills for the 3rd grade ukulele unit. Both grades will begin learning about the history of African American spirituals, secret code songs, and the Underground Railroad during February.

*1st and 2nd graders have been learning about the Instrument families, and various Instruments of the Orchestra. They’ve enjoyed our ‘centers’ days, which reinforced both common and uncommon instrument facts, sounds, composing with world percussion, and identifying where instrumentalists sit in the symphony orchestra. 1st grade also learned about Prokofiev’s Peter & the Wolf.

*Kindergarten has been singing, playing instruments, continuing to work on steady beat, solfege patterns, and creatively moving. They are also learning basic rhythm patterns by sight, including building our rhythms with popsicle sticks, which helps to enhance music reading skills!

Kudos to all of our current and former SES students who took part in the Young Americans workshops and shows Jan 19-21! Participants spent three days in workshops and rehearsals, alongside 42 performers and teachers from five different countries, as they learned dances/choreography, songs from all different genres and parts of the world, composed, wrote poetry, participated in team-building activities, all culminating with two final performances on the final day. We had about 250, 3rd-12th graders from PWSSD take part in the event at TJMS, and are excited to announce that the Young Americans will be back for a week-long summer day camp, the week of Jun 12-16, in the summer of 2018! Watch for sign-up information next year!

FUTP60

We were awarded a grant for $500 for participating in FUTP60 ! That money will be used for food tastings, healthy snacks, and equipment needs to help keep us active! Don’t forget to play every day for 60 minutes!

We also won this authentic autographed Packer helmet!

Stop by to see it!

Third grade visited Discovery World Museum in February to explore many different science concepts. Our main purpose for visiting the museum was to explore simple machines through their hands-on display and a science lab taught by one of the Discovery World instructors. Along the way, students also enjoyed learning about automated machines, how water gets purified, and enjoying the fish in Discovery World's fabulous aquarium. Thanks to the Kohl's

Grant, this trip was free to our students. Thank you Kohls!

Second grade has been filled with the buzz of writing opinion letters! It has been an exciting writing unit because the students have been learning not only how to express their opinion about a book using text evidence, but also because many students have mailed letters out to pen pals from another school, and various authors and illustrators! Some students wrote an opinion letter about a book to second graders at Dunwiddie Elementary School and they received books and opinion letters back to read! Other students wrote opinion letters to the author or illustrator of their favorite book, and response letters have slowly been coming back to them! Some students have received bookmarks, stickers, and even an autographed book with their letters! As of now we have heard back from over 10 different authors including: James Dean the creator of the Pete the Cat books, Debora Dieson the author of Pout Pout Fish, and Nick Bruel the author of the Bad Kitty series! It has been a great way to show our

students that letter writing is important and that their words have power!

News from Guidance and the Psychology Corner By Ms. Brown, Psychology/Guidance In Guidance classes, we covered two big units across grades K5-4th. The units were Skills for Learning and Empathy. Skills for Learning focused on being assertive and using self-talk. The Empathy Unit discussed how students recognize other’s feelings and what to do about it. We are now moving into our third unit called Emotion Management. This unit teaches our students how to recognize their own feelings and how to manage them. As always, ask your child what they’ve learned. See if they are able to remember the steps to calming down.

Fourth Graders took time out of their busy day on Monday, January 16 to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. We talked about who Dr. Martin Luther King Jr was and the vision he had for our world. We also read a book entitled, “We Dream of a World”. After a brainstorming session, fourth graders thought about what they might be able to do to help carry out his dream in their own lives. They also thought about ways they would like to make the world we live in a better place by coming up with their own “dream”. Take a walk down the fourth grade hallway to read about what a better world looks like through the eyes of a fourth grader.

Kindergarten sure has been busy this second semester! We are officially 100 days smarter and boy has there been the changes! For our 100th day of school the children and teachers dressed up like they were 100 years old, made necklaces out of fruit loops, a crown, and trail mix with 100 pieces. Some of the children said, “This is the best day ever!” It was a great day with Donuts with Dad and 100th Day of

School. Everyone had an amazing time and can’t wait to see how much they change by the end of the year!
