SECTION 1 - SAFETY FIRST - IT’S YOURRESPONSIBILITY

SAFETY FIRST – IT’S YOUR RESPONSIBILITY!

Above all – remember that a firearm is amechanical device. It can not think, it can not acton its own – it only does what YOU MAKE IT DO.A mechanical device has no way to know if youractions are safe or if they will result in injury ordeath – THAT’S YOUR PART! It only takes onecareless second to result in a tragedy that youwill have to live with the rest of your life. MAKENO DOUBT ABOUT IT, owning and/or using afirearm puts YOU in full control of its actions andTHEIR CONSEQUENCES!

10 COMMANDMENTS OF SHOOTINGSAFETY

(The following excerpts are from SAAMI bulletin#081. The entire booklet can be obtained bycalling: NATIONAL SHOOTING SPORTSFOUNDATION, 11 MILE HILL ROAD,NEWTOWN, CT 06470)

FIREARMS SAFETY DEPENDS ON YOU!

FROM THE TIME YOU PICK UP A FIREARM,YOU BECOME PART OF A SYSTEM OVERWHICH YOU HAVE COMPLETE CONTROL.YOU ARE THE ONLY PART OF THE SYSTEMTHAT CAN MAKE A GUN SAFE – ORUNSAFE.

You can help meet this responsibility by enrollingin hunter safety or shooter safety courses, if youhave not already done so. You must constantlystress safety when handling firearms, especially

to children and non-shooters. Develop safeshooting habits and remember, firearms safety isup to you. Make no mistake about it.

ALCOHOL, DRUGS AND GUNS DON’T MIX

1. ALWAYS KEEP THE MUZZLE POINTED INA SAFE DIRECTION

This is the most basic safety rule. If everyonehandled a firearm so carefully that the muzzlenever pointed at something they didn’t intend toshoot, there would be virtually no firearmaccidents. It’s as simple as that, and it’s up to you.

Never point your gun at anything you do notintend to shoot. A safe direction means adirection in which a bullet cannot possibly strikeanyone, taking into account possible ricochetsand the fact that bullets can penetrate walls andceilings. Even when “dry firing” with anunloaded gun, you should never point the gun atan unintended target.

This is your responsibility, and only you can control it.

2. FIREARMS SHOULD BE UNLOADEDWHEN NOT ACTUALLY IN USE

Firearms should be loaded only when you arein the field or on the target range or shootingarea, ready to shoot. When not in use, firearms and ammunition should be secured ina safe place, separate from each other. It isyour responsibility to prevent children andinexperienced adults from gaining access tofirearms or ammunition. A loaded gun has noplace in or near a vehicle or building.

Whenever you handle a firearm or hand it tosomeone, always open the action immediately, and visually check the chamber, receiver andmagazine to be certain they do not contain anyammunition. Never assume a gun is unloaded– check for yourself! While in the field, therewill be times when common sense and thebasic rules of firearms safety will require you tounload your gun for maximum safety. When indoubt, unload your gun!

3. DON’T RELY ON YOUR GUN’S “SAFETY”

Treat every gun as though it can fire at anytime, regardless of pressure on the trigger. The “safety” on any gun is a mechanicaldevice, which, like any such device, canbecome inoperable at the worst possible time. The safety serves as a supplement to propergun handling but cannot possibly serve as asubstitute for common sense.

Never touch the trigger on a firearm until youactually intend to shoot.

Your firearm is a precision instrument.Regardless of the position of the safety, anybump strong enough to actuate the firingmechanism of a gun can cause it to fire. Theonly time you can be absolutely certain that agun cannot fire is when the action is open andit is completely empty. You and the safe gun handling procedures you have learned are yourgun’s primary safeties.

2

Page 5: Savage 93R17 Manual

4. BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT’SBEYOND IT

No one can call a bullet back. Don’t shootunless you know exactly what your bullet isgoing to strike. Be sure that your bullet will notinjure anyone or anything beyond your target. You should keep in mind how far a bullet willtravel if it misses your intended target orricochets in another direction.

Be aware that even a .22 short bullet can travelover 11/4 miles and a high velocity shell, such asa 30-06, can project a bullet more than 3 miles.Shotgun pellets can travel 500 yards, andshotgun slugs have a range of over a half-mile.

5. USE CORRECT AMMUNITION

You must assume the serious responsibility ofusing only the correct ammunition for yourfirearm. Read and heed all warnings, includingthose that appear in the gun’s instructionmanual and on the ammunition boxes. Usingimproper or incorrect ammunition can destroy agun and cause serious personal injury. It onlytakes one shell of improper caliber or gauge towreck your gun, and only a second to checkeach one as you load it. Be absolutely certainthat the ammunition you are using matches thespecifications that are contained within thegun’s instruction manual and themanufacturer’s markings on the firearm barrel.

Hand loaded or reloaded ammunition deviatingfrom pressures generated by factory loads orfrom competent recommendations specified in

reputable hand loading manuals can bedangerous, and can cause severe damage toguns and serious injury to the shooter.

Ammunition that has become very wet or hasbeen submerged in water should be discarded ina safe manner. Do not spray oil or solvents onammunition or place ammunition in excessivelylubricated firearms.

Form the habit of examining every shell you putin your gun. Never use damaged, old orquestionable ammunition – the money you saveis not worth the risk of possible injury or a ruinedgun.

DISCHARGING FIREARMS IN POORLYVENTILATED AREAS, CLEANING FIREARMSOR HANDLING AMMUNITION MAY RESULTIN EXPOSURE TO LEAD AND OTHERSUBSTANCES KNOWN TO CAUSE BIRTHDEFECTS, REPRODUCTIVE HARM ANDOTHER SERIOUS PHYSICAL INJURY. HAVEADEQUATE VENTILATION AT ALL TIMES.WASH HANDS THOROUGHLY AFTEREXPOSURE.

6. IF YOUR GUN FAILS TO FIRE WHEN THE TRIGGER IS PULLED, HANDLE WITHCARE!

Occasionally, a loaded gun may not fire whenthe trigger is pulled. If this occurs, keep themuzzle pointed in a safe direction. Keep yourface away from the breech. Then, carefullyopen the action, unload the firearm and disposeof the shell in a safe way.

Any time there is a shell in the chamber, yourgun is loaded and ready to fire - even if you’vetried to shoot and it did not go off. It could gooff at any time, so you must always rememberRULE #1 and WATCH THAT MUZZLE!

7. ALWAYS WEAR EYE AND EARPROTECTION WHEN SHOOTING

All shooters should wear protective shootingglasses and some form of hearing protectorswhile shooting. Exposure to shooting noise candamage hearing, and adequate vision protectionis essential. Wearing eye protection whendisassembling and cleaning any gun will alsohelp prevent the possibility of springs, springtensioned parts, solvents or other agents fromcontacting your eyes. No target shooter, plinkeror hunter should ever be without them.

8. BE SURE THE BARREL IS CLEAR OF OBSTRUCTIONS BEFORE SHOOTING

Before you load your firearm, open the actionand be certain that there is no shell in thechamber. Then glance through the barrel to besure it is clear of any obstruction. Even a smallbit of mud, snow, excess lubricating oil orgrease in the bore can cause dangerouslyincreased pressure, causing the barrel to bulgeor even burst when firing, which can causeinjury to the shooter and bystanders. Make it ahabit to clean the bore with a cleaning rod andpatch to wipe away anti-rust compounds in thegun each time immediately before you shoot it.If the noise or recoil on firing seems weak or

3

Page 6: Savage 93R17 Manual

doesn’t seem quite “right”, cease firingimmediately and be sure to check that noobstruction or projectile has become lodged inthe barrel.

9. DON’T ALTER OR MODIFY YOUR GUN,AND HAVE GUNS SERVICED REGULARLY

Firearms are complicated mechanisms, whichare designed by experts to function properly intheir original condition. Any alteration or change(other than adjusting the AccuTrigger™) madeto a firearm after manufacture can make the gundangerous and will usually void any factorywarranties. Do not jeopardize your safety or thesafety of others by altering the trigger, safety orother mechanism of any firearm or allowingunqualified person’s to repair or modify a gun.

Your gun is a mechanical device, which will notlast forever and is subject to wear. As such, itrequires periodic inspection, adjustment andservice.

10. LEARN THE MECHANISM ANDHANDLING CHARACTERISTICS OF THEFIREARM YOU ARE USING

Not all firearms are the same. Consequently, never handle any firearm without first havingthoroughly familiarized yourself with theparticular type of firearm you are using, the safegun handling rules for loading, unloading, carrying and handling that firearm, and the rulesof safe gun handling in general. Locate thefirearm’s mechanical safety device and getfamiliar with the feel and “on/off” positions.

You should always read and refer to theinstruction manual you received with your gun,or if you have misplaced the manual, simplycontact the manufacturer for a free copy.

Having a gun in your possession is a full-timejob. You cannot guess; you cannot forget. Youmust know how to use, handle, and store yourfirearm safely. Do not use any firearm withouthaving a complete understanding of its particularcharacteristics and safe use. There is no suchthing as a foolproof gun.

SECTION 2 – TWO POSITION SAFETY FOR THE MARK I, RASCAL, MARK II,AND MODEL 93

TWO POSITION SAFETY

PRIOR TO LOADING OR OPERATING,FAMILIARIZE YOURSELF THOROUGHLYWITH THESE OPERATING INSTRUCTIONSAND THE MAIN PARTS OF YOUR FIREARM.

YOUR GUN IS A MECHANICAL DEVICEWHICH WILL NOT LAST FOREVER AND ISSUBJECT TO WEAR. WHEN SOMETHINGDOES NOT SOUND, FEEL, OR LOOK RIGHT,SEEK THE ADVICE OF A PROFESSIONALGUNSMITH IMMEDIATELY. NEVER TAKE ACHANCE.

ALWAYS BE SURE THE FIREARM(ESPECIALLY THE BARREL) IS FREE ANDCLEAR OF ANY OBSTRUCTIONS THAT MAYRESTRICT (OR SLOW DOWN) THE BULLETFROM LEAVING THE MUZZLE AT ITSNORMAL RATE OF SPEED. THIS INCLUDESSNOW, WATER, BRUSH, SHRUBS, STICKS,LEAVES AND DEBRIS TO NAME A FEW.NEVER PLACE THE END OF A BARREL ORSUBMERGE A FIREARM UNDER WATER.RESTRICTING, SLOWING, OR STOPPING THEBULLET FROM LEAVING THE MUZZLE WILLCREATE AN EXCESSIVE AMOUNT OFPRESSURE TO BUILD UP BEHIND IT ANDMAY LEAD TO EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO THEFIREARM AND PERSONAL INJURY TO THESHOOTER AND/OR BYSTANDERS. SAFEOPERATION IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY ANDCAN ONLY BE CONTROLLED BY YOU!

KNOW EXACTLY WHERE YOU ARE POINTINGTHE BARREL OF A FIREARM AND WHY!

IT IS SO IMPORTANT TO STRESS THAT AFIREARM IS NO MORE THAN AN ASSEMBLYOF MANY DIFFERENT COMPONENTS – AMECHANICAL DEVICE. AS SUCH, YOU ARETHE ONLY SAFETY MECHANISM THAT CANPREVENT AN ACCIDENT.

The safety on these Savage Arms rimfire boltactions have two positions:

• FULL SAFE – fully rearward covering thered ‘dot’.

• SAFETY OFF - READY TO FIRE – fullyforward exposing the red ‘dot’.

FULL SAFE

1. The safety is in the FULL SAFE positionwhen it has been moved fully rearward, covering the red “dot” (See FIGURE 1).

2. The safety should be moved to the FULLSAFE position prior to closing the bolt whenloading ammunition.

3. In the FULL SAFE position, the trigger isblocked from moving.

FIGURE 1 FIGURE 2

WHEN CARRYING A LOADED FIREARM, THESAFETY MUST ALWAYS BE IN THE FULLSAFE POSITION.

THE ONLY TIME YOU CAN BE ABSOLUTELYCERTAIN THAT A GUN CANNOT FIRE ISWHEN THE ACTION IS OPEN AND IT ISCOMPLETELY EMPTY OF AMMUNITION.

SAFETY OFF – READY TO FIRE

1. The safety is in the OFF – READY TO FIREposition when moved fully forward, exposingthe red “dot” (see FIGURE 2).

NEVER CARRY A LOADED FIREARM WITHTHE SAFETY OFF.

SECTION 3 – INSTALLING THE BOLTASSEMBLY FOR THE MARK I, RASCAL,MARK II, AND MODEL 93

BOLT ASSEMBLIES ARE SPECIFICALLYMATCHED TO A FIREARM. USING ANYOTHER BOLT ASSEMBLY MAY CAUSEEXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO THE FIREARMAND/OR SERIOUS INJURY TO THE SHOOTEROR BYSTANDER.

CERTAIN FIREARMS ARE SHIPPED WITHTHE BOLT REMOVED AND PACKED IN ASEPARATE COMPARTMENT WITHIN THEBOX. BEFORE INSTALLING THE BOLT,VERIFY THAT THE 4 DIGITS ENGRAVED ONTHE BOTTOM MATCH THE LAST 4 DIGITS OFTHE SERIAL NUMBER ON THE RECEIVER.

BE SURE THERE IS NO AMMUNITION INEITHER THE CHAMBER OR MAGAZINE.

1. Be sure the bolt handle is aligned properlywith the front of the bolt (see FIGURE 3 –BOTTOM VIEW).

The RASCAL is a one piece bolt and does notneed to be aligned (see FIGURE 4 – BOTTOMVIEW).

2. Hold the bolt so the firing pin is located topcenter.

3. Be sure the bolt handle is aligned properlywith the bolt arm slot in the receiver.

4. Firmly pull the trigger (Safety must be in theOFF- READY TO FIRE position) while slidingthe bolt into the rear of the receiver.

5

Page 8: Savage 93R17 Manual

5. If you encounter difficulty inserting the bolt, remove it and recheck the alignment.

AMMUNITION IS A CRITICAL FACTOR IN THERELIABLE PERFORMANCE OF YOURFIREARM. DUE TO THE MANY TYPES OFCOMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE AMMUNITIONAND THE MILLIONS OF ROUNDS PRODUCEDEVERY YEAR, IT IS POSSIBLE TOOCCASIONALLY EXPERIENCE AMMUNITIONRELATED PROBLEMS. SHOULD YOUNOTICE WHAT APPEARS TO BE GASPRESSURE/RESIDUAL POWDER COMINGFROM THE BOLT AREA, THIS MAY BE WHATIS KNOWN AS “BLOW BACK”. ALTHOUGHWEARING SAFETY GLASSES WILL PROTECTYOUR EYES, WE RECOMMEND TRYING ADIFFERENT BRAND OF AMMUNITION INORDER TO CORRECT THE SITUATION.

KNOW YOUR GUN! IF ANYTHING ‘FEELS’ ORSOUNDS DIFFERENT WHEN LOADING ORSHOOTING - STOP - AND HAVE A QUALIFIEDGUNSMITH TAKE A LOOK! NEVER TAKE ACHANCE WITH SOMETHING THAT YOU AREUNSURE OF … ALWAYS ASK APROFESSIONAL.

SAFE OWNERSHIP IS YOURRESPONSIBILITY. PRIOR TO ADJUSTINGTHE ACCUTRIGGER PLEASE THOROUGHLYREAD AND UNDERSTAND THE INSTRUCTIONMANUAL IN ITS ENTIRETY.

BE SURE THE BOLT IS OPEN AND THERE ISNO LIVE AMMUNITION IN EITHER THECHAMBER OR DETACHABLE MAGAZINEBEFORE REMOVING THE STOCK ANDADJUSTING THE ACCUTRIGGER.

ADJUSTING THE ACCUTRIGGER REQUIRESTHE STOCK TO BE REMOVED

REMOVING THE STOCK

1. Remove the detachable magazine if soequipped (see FIGURE 11).

THE ONLY TIME YOU CAN BE ABSOLUTELYCERTAIN THAT A GUN CANNOT FIRE ISWHEN THE ACTION IS OPEN AND IT ISCOMPLETELY EMPTY OF AMMUNITION.

2. Lift the bolt handle up and fully rearward.

3. Look and feel to be sure the chamber isempty.

4. Turn the firearm upside down, with the muzzlepointed away from you.

5. Using a 9/64” Allen wrench (5/32” for a‘Thumbhole’ stock), loosen and remove thetwo screws securing the stock (see FIGURE 16).

FIGURE 16

ADJUSTING THE ACCUTRIGGER

1. Notice that the trigger return spring (B) mayprotrude below the bottom surface of thetrigger (see FIGURE 18).

2. To adjust towards the higher range of pull(approximately 4 1/2 pounds), insert theAccuTrigger supplied tool (A) into the bottomof the trigger return spring (B) and turn thetool clockwise. The maximum trigger pull is atthe point where the spring “clicks” whenrotated (see FIGURE 17).

3. To adjust for a lower pull (approximately 2 1/2

pounds), insert the AccuTrigger supplied tool(A) into the bottom of the trigger return spring(B) and turn the tool counter-clockwise. Theminimum pull is at the point where the largecoil sets deep within the trigger and the smallcoil extends quite a bit below the trigger andyou detect resistance (see FIGURE 18).

The spring should not be forced beyond these limits.

4. The AccuRelease adds an additional level ofsafety by stopping the sear if the rifle is accidentally jarred or dropped, assuming thefirearm has been properly serviced and maintained.

EXCESSIVE JARRING OR PULLING THETRIGGER WITHOUT DEPRESSING THEACCURELEASE MAY CAUSE THE SEAR TOMOVE. AS DESIGNED, THE ACCURELEASEWILL PREVENT ACCIDENTAL DISCHARGEWHEN MAINTAINED AND REGULARLYSERVICED. WHEN THE SEAR IS BLOCKEDBY THE ACCURELEASE, THE INTERNALHAMMER IS RESTRAINED WITHIN THE BOLTASSEMBLY. THE ‘CLICK’ THAT IS HEARD ISTHE ACTUAL SEAR BEING BLOCKED BYTHE ACCURELEASE AND NOT THE FIRINGPIN BEING RELEASED! IN THIS EVENT, THEBOLT MUST BE RECOCKED IN ORDER TORESET THE SEAR.

WITH ANY MECHANICAL DEVICE, SURFACESWILL WEAR WITH USE. KNOW YOUR GUN!IF ANYTHING ‘FEELS’ OR SOUNDSDIFFERENT - STOP - AND HAVE AQUALIFIED GUNSMITH TAKE A LOOK!NEVER TAKE A CHANCE WITH SOMETHINGTHAT YOU ARE UNSURE OF … ALWAYSASK A PROFESSIONAL.

INSTALLING THE STOCK

1. Place the action into the stock.

2. Replace both screws, tightening only tosecure the stock (approximately 18 inchpounds) but not enough to indent the stock orMAGAZINE RETAINING PLATE.

3. Cycle the bolt several times to be sure that itfunctions properly.

4. With the chamber and detachable magazine(if so equipped) empty, the bolt open, and themuzzle pointed in a safe direction, verify thatboth positions of the safety functionnormally. With the SAFETY in the FULLSAFE position, the trigger should have nomovement when pulled.

SECTION 7 – TWO POSITION SAFETYFOR THE B.MAG

THE SAVAGE B.MAG IS UNIQUE UNTOITSELF AND INCORPORATES FEATURESTHAT YOU MAY NOT BE FAMILIAR WITH.PLEASE BE SURE TO READ THESESECTIONS CAREFULLY TO UNDERSTANDHOW THIS MODEL DIFFERS FROM OTHERSAVAGE MODELS.

FAILURE TO OBEY A SAFETY WARNINGMAY RESULT IN INJURY TO YOU OROTHERS.

KNOW HOW TO LOCATE AND OPERATE THESAFETY MECHANISM.

THOROUGHLY CLEAN THE INSIDE OF THEBARREL AND CHAMBER PRIOR TOLOADING WITH AMMUNITION.

THE USE OF RELOADS, HANDLOADS,MILITARY SURPLUS, OR ANY OTHERCOMMERCIAL/ NONCOMMERCIALAMMUNITION NOT MANUFACTURED TO

SAAMI (SPORTING ARMS AND AMMUNITIONMANUFACTURERS’ INSTITUTE, INC.)/ ANSI(AMERICAN NATIONAL STANDARDSINSTITUTE) SPECIFICATIONS WILL VOID THEWARRANTY.

KNOW EXACTLY WHERE YOU AREPOINTING THE BARREL OF A FIREARM ANDWHY!

IT IS SO IMPORTANT TO STRESS THAT AFIREARM IS NO MORE THAN AN ASSEMBLYOF MANY DIFFERENT COMPONENTS – AMECHANICAL DEVICE. AS SUCH, YOU ARETHE ONLY SAFETY MECHANISM THAT CANPREVENT AN ACCIDENT.

The safety on your Savage Arms B.Mag has Two positions:

• FULL SAFE - Pull SAFETY button towardsshooter (trigger blocked – bolt can beopened).

• SAFETY OFF - READY TO FIRE. PushSAFETY button away from shooter.

FULL SAFE

1. The SAFETY is in the FULL SAFE positionwhen it has been moved fully rearward, covering the red “dot” (See FIGURE 19).

2. The SAFETY should be moved into the FULLSAFE position prior to closing the bolt whenthe firearm is loaded.

3. In the FULL SAFE position, the trigger isblocked from moving and the bolt can still be opened.

FIGURE 19

WHEN CARRYING A LOADED FIREARM, THESAFETY MUST ALWAYS BE IN THE FULLSAFE POSITION.

22

Page 25: Savage 93R17 Manual

THE ONLY TIME YOU CAN BE ABSOLUTELYCERTAIN THAT A GUN CANNOT FIRE ISWHEN THE ACTION IS OPEN AND IT ISCOMPLETELY EMPTY OF AMMUNITION.

SAFETY OFF – READY TO FIRE

1. The SAFETY is in the OFF position whenmoved fully forward, exposing the red “dot”(see FIGURE 20).

FIGURE 20

NEVER TRANSPORT/CARRY A LOADEDFIREARM WITH THE SAFETY OFF.

SECTION 8 – INSTALLING THE BOLTASSEMBLY FOR THE B.MAG

BOLT ASSEMBLIES ARE SPECIFICALLYMATCHED TO A FIREARM. USING ANYOTHER BOLT ASSEMBLY MAY CAUSEEXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO THE FIREARMAND/OR SERIOUS INJURY TO THE SHOOTEROR BYSTANDER.

CERTAIN FIREARMS ARE SHIPPED WITHTHE BOLT REMOVED AND PACKED IN ASEPARATE COMPARTMENT WITHIN THEBOX. BEFORE INSTALLING THE BOLT,VERIFY THAT THE 4 DIGITS ENGRAVED ONTHE SIDE MATCH THE LAST 4 DIGITS OFTHE SERIAL NUMBER ON THE RECEIVER.

BE SURE THERE IS NO AMMUNITION INEITHER THE CHAMBER OR MAGAZINE.

1. Rotate the BOLT HANDLE (if necessary) so itsits at the 11:00 o’clock position as shown inFIGURE 21.

2. WITH NO AMMUNITION IN THE FIREARM,insert the BOLT and push it forward into thereceiver.

FIGURE 21

3. The BOLT RELEASE SLOT should align withthe BOLT RELEASE on the receiver (seeFIGURE 22).

FIGURE 22

4. Cycle the bolt several times to be sure thetravel is smooth and the BOLT RELEASEkeeps it from coming out of the back of thereceiver.

23

Page 26: Savage 93R17 Manual

5. Push the bolt fully forward, close the BOLTHANDLE (pushing downward), and verify thatthe TWO POSITION SAFETY is operationalas explained in SECTION 7 of this manual.

AS MENTIONED PREVIOUSLY, THE SAVAGEB.MAG IS UNIQUE UNTO ITSELF. UNLIKETHE OTHER RIMFIRES IN THIS MANUAL, THEB.MAG COCKS THE MAINSPRING WHEN THEBOLT HANDLE IS CLOSED – RESULTING INA ‘STIFFER FEEL’ WHEN PUSHING THEBOLT HANDLE DOWNWARD.

YOUR GUN IS A MECHANICAL DEVICEWHICH WILL NOT LAST FOREVER AND ISSUBJECT TO WEAR. WHEN SOMETHINGDOES NOT SOUND, FEEL, OR LOOK RIGHT,SEEK THE ADVICE OF A PROFESSIONALGUNSMITH IMMEDIATELY. NEVER TAKE ACHANCE!

SECTION 9 – BASIC USE FOR THEB.MAG

FIREARMS SHOULD BE LOADED ONLYWHEN YOU ARE IN THE FIELD, ON THETARGET RANGE, OR AT A SHOOTING AREAREADY TO SHOOT.

ALWAYS KEEP THE MUZZLE POINTED IN ASAFE DIRECTION.

USE ONLY THE CORRECT AMMUNITIONTHAT IS INDICATED (STAMPED) ON THE TOPOF THE BARREL.

THOROUGHLY CLEAN THE INSIDE OF THEBARREL AND CHAMBER PRIOR TOLOADING WITH AMMUNITION.

THE USE OF RELOADS, HANDLOADS,MILITARY SURPLUS, OR ANY OTHERCOMMERCIAL/ NONCOMMERCIALAMMUNITION NOT MANUFACTURED TOSAAMI (SPORTING ARMS AND AMMUNITIONMANUFACTURERS’ INSTITUTE, INC.)/ANSI(AMERICAN NATIONAL STANDARDSINSTITUTE) SPECIFICATIONS WILL VOID THEWARRANTY.

24

Page 27: Savage 93R17 Manual

SECTION 14 – MAINTENANCE

ROUTINE MAINTENANCE:

YOUR GUN IS A MECHANICAL DEVICEWHICH WILL NOT LAST FOREVER AND ISSUBJECT TO WEAR. AS WITH ANYPRECISION TUNED MECHANICAL DEVICE,PERIODIC INSPECTION/ MAINTENANCE ISREQUIRED – AND YOUR RESPONSIBILITY!

1. TIMEFRAMES: It is difficult to establish atime period or number of rounds as the basisfor when a firearm should be examined, cleaned, and thoroughly inspected. Differentshooting conditions, weather patterns, andtypes of ammunition, to list a few, all play asignificant role in answering the questions‘when’ and ‘how often’. As a general rule,‘more often’ is much safer than ‘not enough’.

• As a start, the TWO POSITION SAFETYshould be checked prior to loading liveammunition. This is an important step thatshould be done every time the firearm isprepared for use.

• Remove the bolt, look down the barrel tobe sure it is clear of any obstruction andthat there are no signs of damage (nicks, scratches, etc.), rust, or pitting.

• Check the outer surface of the barrel, running your fingers gently down its length, feeling for any bulges or signs of damage.

• While the bolt is out, inspect the bolt head, extractor, and all other surfaces for signs ofdamage or excessive wear.

• With the stock removed, carefully inspectthe AccuTrigger and adjustment spring for

damage or foreign debris (twigs, grass, etc.).

• Carefully examine the stock and studs thatsecure the carrying strap.

• Check the scope rings to be sure they havenot loosened.

• After the stock has been put back on, verifythe action screws are tight.

2. WHO SHOULD DO THE CHECKING: As theowner – or user – it is your primaryresponsibility to assure the firearm is safeprior to using it. Although we know itscondition when it leaves the factory, we haveno control or insight as to what has or has notbeen done once it leaves our hands.

After reading and understanding thisINSTRUCTION MANUAL – and prior to loadingwith live ammunition - you should be veryfamiliar and capable of handling the items notedabove. In depth mechanical issues or questionsas well as periodic examinations should bereferred to a qualified gunsmith or Savage ArmsService Department. Mechanical devices will bythe nature of their design, wear and as suchmay require very specific adjustments. In thewrong hands, a ‘simple’ adjustment could resultin serious damage to the firearm or even worse, injury or death to the shooter or bystander.

KNOW YOUR GUN! IF ANYTHING ‘FEELS’ ORSOUNDS DIFFERENT - STOP - AND HAVE AQUALIFIED GUNSMITH TAKE A LOOK!NEVER TAKE A CHANCE WITH SOMETHINGTHAT YOU ARE UNSURE OF ... ALWAYS ASKA PROFESSIONAL.
