4. System Design ConsiderationsEach Pro Host model has different performance specifications to address multiple system levels. Read through this section before choosing a Pro Host Model.

Larger SystemsIn larger systems, the amount of AVC processes that will be run by the host increases and a Pro Host with a SSD (Solid State Drive) and 8 GB of memory is required to maintain proper performance. An SVR-4500S or SVR-5000S should be used when a system contains more than fifty 3rd party devices.

Using HDMI and Thunderbolt Ports

TrueCommand OSDTrueCommand OSD allows for an image to be placed over the video image for selecting and controlling services using a simple navigation interface. The server model used for TrueCommand depends on the number of OSDs and the chassis as described in HDMI and Thunderbolt Port Usage Guidelines.

Streaming iTunesA master host may be used as an iTunes server that can distribute up to 8 streams of audio through the Savant system. The number of streams available depends on the controller chassis and the host as described in HDMI and Thunderbolt Port Usage Guidelines.

HDMI and Thunderbolt Port Usage Guidelines• OSD is only currently available on SmartMediaPro with a VOM-VP02H card installed. Other products

which supported OSD are no longer available.

• A host cannot support more than 1 VOM-VP02H card. Additional OSD servers must be used when the system calls for more than 1 card.

When Using an SVR-5000S:• The left Thunderbolt port has no function within a Savant system and connection may interfere with

other display outputs.

• Only 4 iTunes streams are supported.

• HDMI must be used when streaming iTunes audio.

• HDMI and Thunderbolt cannot be used simultaneously when streaming iTunes audio. A separate OSD server is required to use iTunes and OSD simultaneously. This does not apply to the SmartVideo SSV-1000 which support iTunes and OSD over a single connection.

Functionality of the display outputs on the host can have an effect on the use cases for using OSD.See Appendix C: Host Display Output Connection Matrix for more information on choosing a server/chassis combination.

Page 10: Savant® Pro Host Deployment...SVR-4500S or SVR-5000S should be used when a system contains more than fifty 3rd party devices. Using HDMI and Thunderbolt Ports TrueCommand OSD

5. InstallationThe Pro Host should be installed on a solid, flat, level surface such as a table, cabinet, or shelf. The location should be dry, well ventilated, and out of direct sunlight.

Rack InstallationPro Hosts may be mounted into a rack using the optional RCK-3000. This rack shelf provides a ventilated shelf that can be used for up to 2 Pro Hosts.

Rack Face PlateThe face plate for the RCK-3000 includes a front panel indicator for the 2 installed hosts. These line up with the host so that power status can be seen without having to remove the faceplate.

Ethernet ConnectionThe Pro Host communicates with the devices on the network via the wired Ethernet connection.See Appendix A: Network Requirements for more information on configuring Pro Host network settings.

Audio and Display Output ConnectionsAudio outputs on the host are used for the Audio Interrupt Service (AIS) that will interrupt the currently playing audio when a doorbell is pressed. Display outputs are used for streaming audio from iTunes and TrueCommand OSD. How the host connects to these outputs varies based on the host and chassis model.

Refer to the following sections within this document and documents located on the Savant Community for more information on using the Display Output connections.

• Section Using HDMI and Thunderbolt Ports (Display Outputs)

• Section Appendix C: Host Output Connection Matrix (Audio and Display Outputs)

• Video Output Module (VOM-VP02H-xx) Quick Reference Guide (Display Outputs)

• Audio Interrupt Service (AIS) Configuration for Doorbell Application Note (Audio Output)

AC Power Connection SURGE PROTECTION!

Use a surge-protected circuit for all components and power supplies requiring 100-240V AC 50/60 Hz source power.

ELECTRICAL DISCONNECT!The source power outlet and power supply input power sockets should be easily accessible to disconnect power in the event of an electrical hazard or malfunction.

Power Management RecommendationsSavant recommends a pure sine wave uninterruptible power supply (UPS) with the ability to shut down the Savant Host before the battery runs out of power. Never remove power from the Savant Host before shutting it down.

6. Blueprint ConfigurationHosts are automatically added when a new configuration is opened, however, they are not placed onto the Layout Window. A host must be placed onto the Layout Window in order for it to used within the system.

Note:This section only shows the placement of the host in a configuration. Refer to the Deployment Guide for the appropriate Savant chassis for details on connecting the Pro Host within Blueprint.

Required Devices• Pro Host (SVR-4500x | SVR-5000S)

Replacing a Master Host in a ConfigurationStarting with da Vinci 6.0, the type of host that is used when a new configuration is created can be set to either a Pro Host or a Smart Host. If a Smart Host exists in the configuration, follow these steps to replace the existing master to a Pro Host.

1. In an open Blueprint configuration, open the Component Library by navigating to:View > Show Component Library

2. Enter SVR into the Search field.3. Select the Savant Series 3 Host in the list and drag it onto the host in the left side room list.

4. Select Replace when prompted.5. At the top of the Room List, select the host and drag it onto the Layout Window.6. Enter a unique Device Name and the Savant ID for the the host.

The Savant ID is used to identify the host on the network so that a configuration may be uploaded.A. Select the host in the Layout Window and open the Inspector by navigating to:

View > Show InspectorB. Enter a Device Name that is unique to the system.

Tip:Savant recommends using the customer’s last name and a number unique to the customer followed by Savant Master Host.Example: Jones45 Savant Master Host

C. Enter the Savant ID for the host.

Adding a Doorbell or Door Station Using Audio Interrupt Service (AIS)The Pro Host supports the Audio Interrupt Service (AIS) which is used to interrupt the currently playing audio with a doorbell chime alerting the user that a doorbell has been pressed. This service requires a connection between the Pro Host and a Savant Audio Matrix or 3rd party audio matrix.

Refer to the Audio Interrupt Service (AIS) Configuration for Doorbell Application Note located on the Savant Community for information on using AIS.

Adding a Host HDMI Connection for iTunes StreamingThe Pro Host HDMI outputs can be used for streaming iTunes to a Savant Audio Matrix with a Host HDMI input. Connection to the matrix varies based on the matrix model being used. Refer to the deployment guide for the matrix located on the Savant Community for connection guidelines.

Appendix A: Network RequirementsSavant requires the use of business class/commercial grade network equipment throughout the network to ensure the reliability of communication between devices. These higher quality components also allow for more accurate troubleshooting when needed.

Device Network ConnectionsConnect all Savant devices to the same local area network (LAN) or subnet as the host. Savant recommends not implementing any type of traffic or packet shaping in your network topology for the Savant devices as this may interfere with performance.

Managing IP AddressesTo ensure that the IP Address will not change due to a power outage, a static IP Address or DHCP reservation should be configured. Savant recommends using DHCP reservation within the router. By using this method, static IP Addresses for all devices can be managed from a single UI avoiding the need to access devices individually.

Setting a Static IP AddressRefer to the How to set a static IP address on a Savant Host Controller Knowledge Article located on the Savant Community.

Setting DHCP ReservationSetting DHCP reservation varies from router to router. Refer to the documentation for the router to configure DHCP reservation.

Network ChangesSavant recommends performing the following steps to refresh the IP connection after connecting to a new network, changing routers, or if the IP Address range is changed in the current router. This will reset any IP connection and ensure that the host is communicating with the network correctly.

• Hot Plug the Ethernet (LAN) Connection

1. Disconnect the Ethernet (LAN) connection from the host.2. Wait 15 seconds and then reconnect.
