■ ADOPTION SAVES LIVES Four million cats and dogs are killed in U.S. shelters each year. For every puppy or kitten produced by a breeder, there is an animal at a shelter who loses his or her chance at finding a home and is at risk of euthanasia.

■ ABUSE AND NEGLECT IN PUPPY MILLS Most animals sold in pet stores come from mass-breeding facilities called puppy mills. Documented conditions include over-breeding, wire cages, little to no veterinary care, poor quality and/or lack of food and water, no protection from the elements, no socialization, and killing of “low-producing” dogs.

■ HEALTH ISSUES WITH PET STORE ANIMALS Too often, dogs and cats from pet stores and other sellers are not healthy. Many pets are taken from their mothers at too early an age and are sickly due to substandard living conditions. At puppy mills, there is little regard for the dogs’ health or any existing genetic conditions that may be passed on to the puppies.

■ COST OF BUYING A PET Adoption fees at shelters or rescues are less than prices at pet stores or other sources. Pets are typically healthier, already vaccinated and spayed/neutered.
