Money Management Assistance for Older Adults

Money management is tough enough for the young and healthy. Consider the added degree of difficulty for older adults – especially those whose health, eyesight or social support systems are no longer as robust.

Each year, the media report tales of seniors preyed upon by scam artists purporting to “help” them. Don’t become a similar statistic. Instead, take steps to protect yourself – and those you care for – by proactively establishing a solid, well-organized money management system.

ELEMENTS TO CONSIDER

Before you seek external money management assistance, take stock of your financial status and needs, and determine where you might need help, now or sometime in the future. These parts could include:• Budgeting and bill-paying –

handling monthly bills, reconciling bank accounts and operating according to a budget.

• Medical insurance claims – ensuring timely premium payments, obtaining

reimbursements and filing paperwork correctly.

• Financial and legal planning – making sure your financial and legal needs are handled properly.

• Income tax preparation – compil-ing documentation and receipts throughout the year and taking advantage of all available tax deductions and credits.

• Handling government benefits – checking on Social Security, disability and/or veteran’s benefits to ensure you receive what’s due to you.

Summer is almost here, and that means the gardens at the Minneapolis location are in the process of being planted! Did you know, each year over 4,500 annual plants are planted starting in May by our fantastic groundskeeper? He has planted as many as 1,000 annual plants in a day, assuming the soil has already been prepped and the weather cooperates.

While our standard sidewalk beds feature red begonias (shown at right), a tried and true hardy annual that looks stunning in mass plantings, Mark likes to mix it up a little. The various planters and flower beds on the grounds and around the building have featured various plant varieties including zinnias, marigolds, seed geraniums, moss roses, petunias, gazanias and cannas. His favorite perennial planted on the grounds is iris. The vast majority of the plants planted at the Bank each year are grown and purchased at Pletscher’s Greenhouses.

Local Interest Book Pick By Colleen Corona

I have always found myself fascinated by the Congdon Mansion a/k/a Glensheen going back to when I was a small child. I recall visiting Duluth in the 1980s with my parents and stopping by the mansion with hopes of taking a tour. Unfortunately, the mansion was closed that day, but the

former gardener who was allowed to live on the grounds for as long as he wanted was there and eager to have a conversation. He spoke with my father for a long time and discussed everything from working for Elisabeth Congdon to his memories surrounding the murders of 1977. About 20 years later, while visiting Duluth with my husband, I met the author of the book Glensheen’s Daughter: The Marjorie Congdon Story, at a local book-signing event. I had already read her book, so it was a treat to speak with her regarding all the research she had done leading up to the writing of her book. I have toured the mansion and read that book numerous times, yet find myself always wanting to come back for more.

appropriate source of help for your financial needs. Just make sure this individual is experienced in all of the facets of assistance you require – and can be explicitly trusted. Family members can be a great help, but unfortunately, they are also the leading source of financial abuse against seniors – and many such crimes are never reported to authorities.

Even with a trustworthy family member, it may be a good idea to appoint a financial professional to provide dual oversight of your finances. For example, request that an attorney, accountant or bank trust officer also periodically review your financial statements. Besides safeguarding against fraud, this action can also help eliminate errors or oversights.

EXTERNAL RESOURCES

The Center for Healthy Aging (www.healthyagingprograms.org) offers a daily money management program that’s become a model for similar programs around the country. Trained and closely supervised program volunteers provide older adults with in-home assistance on handling their financial affairs.

If you’d simply like to learn how to save, invest and manage your money better, check out the federal government’s free information at www.mymoney.gov. Any of Northeast Bank’s representatives would also be happy to provide counsel on local resources to help you manage your money.

Save the Date!Northeast Bank’s 2015 Community Picnic will be held on Friday, September 11, at our Minneapolis location. Each year we highlight a community partner located in the surrounding area of the host-ing bank location. Each nonprofit partner is present at the picnic to raise awareness for their services, and to collect needed items. This year’s partner will be the East Side Neighborhood Services (ESNS) Food Shelf located in Minneapolis.

Picnic attendees are invited to donate non-perishable food items for distribution through one of their three food shelves.
