The Children's Center held its annual Field Day celebration! Our staff im plem ented and m odifieda v ariety of recreational activ ities for all to participate! Students honed in on their social skillswhile participating in the gam es set up throughout the school. These fun recreational gam eshelp our children with self-expression, fine and gross m otor skills and boosts their self-confidencewhile hav ing fun.

PAINTING WITH A PURPOSE

The arts prov ide necessary skills forstudents with disabilities to expressthem selv es. More im portantly , the artsbring great joy and build self-esteemkeeping the child engaged. This helps toim prov e hearing, v ision, m obility andsensory needs. In addition to integratingthe arts into the curriculum , our staff alsodiv e into other areas such as, but notlim ited to, behav ior m anagem ent, social-em otional skills all while dev eloping thechild's interpersonal skills. Theachiev em ents are epic despite thechallenges our indiv iduals face.

One of our 3 1 hom es, Church, is designed to offer each of ourindiv iduals the m axim um lev el of independence. Ourdedicated staff is an integral part of the residential program ,prov iding a high lev el of care so that indiv iduals like Glady sand Rose can achiev e goals and be as independent aspossible. With the assistance of our Direct SupportProfessionals, our indiv iduals are able to participate incom m unity ev ents, foster lifelong friendships andexperience the responsibilities of daily life.

CELEBRATED ARTIST OF THE MONTH!

Ev ery two m onths UCP-LI program indiv iduals select am ong their peersa celebrated artist to feature. Meet June’s “Celebrated Artist”! Dav id hasbeen in UCP of Long Island’s Program Without Walls for ten y ears. He hasbeen writing poetry all of his life and he enjoy s researchingextraterrestrial life, which m otiv ates him to write sci-fi them es. UCP-LIstaff support Dav id and encourage his artistic abilities by assisting himin researching his areas of interest on the com puter and checking outbooks from local libraries. Dav id’s poetry has been published on websites and in journals. Hisfav orite poem , Gone Are the Day s, was published in the Benton Courier.We are so proud of his accom plishm ents and the accom plishm ents of allour indiv iduals in UCP of LI’s v arious program s!

Community and Independence

Meet Maria, an indiv idual in UCP-LI’s Day HabilitationProgram . This program has prov ided the ability for Maria topursue an inclusiv e lifesty le by becom ing inv olv ed withinthe com m unity and by participating in interactiv eactiv ities at Marcus. In addition to the com m unity andinteractiv e activ ities, Maria is also a part of, "TheSensations", our inhouse m usical group. Maria spends m ost of the day working on m oneym anagem ent skills goals, com m unication goals and enjoy spracticing throughout the week with "The Sensations".

Staff assist Maria while in the com m unity helping toparticipate in weekly shopping activ ities; by researchingshopping item s, determ ining the cost of item s and m oneyexchange. Maria was recently able to utilize her skills whiletrav eling to the Dom inican Republic with her fam ily , as shem ade purchases in the airport and while trav eling thru thecountry .
