Although it was cold, it was also quite an active season to advocate on behalf of CCARC and the people we support. CCARC was pleased to again host our annual Legislative Breakfast collaboratively with four other agencies (BARC, CMHA, CW Resources and Wheeler Clinic) to share the important message that the State of Connecticut needs to “pay for the cost of care.” Connecticut should be proud of the system of care that our nonprofits provide to people with disabilities—it has been cost effective and efficient. Most importantly, we provide quality services within the community where the people we support live and work. In order to sustain this quality of service, the state needs to recognize the value and fund it appropriately. This message was resonated by the testimonies of several of our families and individuals who receive our services sharing their personal stories. In addition to this event, we have provided verbal and written testimonies through this legislative session on bills that could support or hinder the work we do every day. Our voices, when united, are powerful and important to our state legislators who truly listen and want to make the right decisions for their constituents. CCARC was fortunate to receive a state grant of $249,000 from Governor Malloy’s bonding allocation to help nonprofit human services agencies for capital and infrastructure improvements. We know by this support that the Governor recognizes that we are the safety net for the most vulnerable citizens in our community. A testament to the statewide need were the over $101 million in requests for the $20 million available for these grants. I want to do a special “shout out” to Representative Betty Boukus for helping to make a dream happen for one of our residents, Kristine. She learned that for the past three years Kristine wanted to meet Governor Malloy to thank him for his work. Betty made this happen and coordinated an opportunity for Kristine to meet with the Governor and share her thanks directly with him. It was quite a special moment for her and for all of us who saw this happen. Enjoy the warming spring and my personal thanks to each of you who help support our CCARC. CEO’s CORNERAfter a very long winter, we are all ready for spring flowers and warm sunshine!

Picture a lighted runway, eager models, great food and friends—all for a good cause! CCARC, Inc. was proud to hold its 9th Annual Fashion Show, “Toast to Fashion,” chaired by Mary Jean Agostini, on Friday, March 28, 2014, at St. George Greek Orthodox Church Hall.

Approximately 300 guests were dazzled over fashions presented by Connecticut Furs, Inc. of New Britain, Men’s Wearhouse of West Hartford and Silkworm Boutique of West Hartford Center.

The models included some of the area’s prominent business leaders such as Steve Nims, Michael Nelson and his wife Laurie of Associated Insurance Services, Inc., (who was also the Event Sponsor), Mayor Erin Stewart and former mayor Tim Stewart, Paul Ballasy and Kristen Stewart of CohnReznick, New Britain Superintendent of Schools Kelt Cooper and his wife Elizabeth Bussey Cooper, just to name a few.

Teresa’s Catering created a delectable cuisine and the homemade Italian cookies baked by Filomena DiMatteo and Filomena Sirica were enjoyed by everyone. Prudence Sloane and Joel Silvestro of the Dancing Duo kept the crowd entertained with their performances and the action of the live and silent auctions kept the excitement high.

Thank you to the many businesses and friends of CCARC, including sponsors, presenters and volunteers, as well as a special thanks to our Event Sponsor, Associated Insurance Services, Inc., for helping CCARC surpass its goal by raising almost $30,000!
