Thompson Community Center Director

Spring has sprung and summer will soon be on the way! Be sure to check out all the great activities that will be happening at the Thompson Community Center this summer! This month’s unique Thompson Community Center characteristic is partnership. Although that may not seem unusual to you, the ways in which we partner with other organizations and companies in the Fox Cities is sometimes unique, very diverse and can be rather challenging at times. Did you know that'

The Appleton YMCA provides instructors for many of the classes offered at the Thompson Community Center?

The monthly potluck is hosted by our very creative and dedicated Civic League members?

The Thompson Café gets some of the food through St. Joseph’s Food Pantry?

Many of the people who serve you each day are because of a partnership with Workforce Development and/or Goodwill?

Numerous companies are very committed to providing sponsorships for events at the Thompson Community Center. Sponsorship is critical for us to be able to offer many of the activities you enjoy.

These are just a few examples of the many partnerships that exist at the Thompson Community Center. Without these part-nerships, the Thompson Community Center would not be able to offer you the activities, programs and services that are meaningful to you. Finally, a couple thank you’s —

Thank you to everyone who has completed a Thompson Community Center Participant Information Form. Thank you for your diligence in signing in when you come to the Thompson Community Center. Funders are requesting more information about the people who come to the Thompson Community Center. Knowing who is coming to the Thompson Community Center and the activities you are attending helps us respond to those requests.

June is National Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Month With summer just around the corner, there are an increas-ing number of fresh fruit and vegetables to choose from each week. Eating locally grown or homegrown produce is the best way to get the freshest fruit and veggies. Eating seasonally not only saves you money, but gives you more freshness, flavor and packs the biggest nutritional punch. The easiest way to get more into your diet is to add fresh fruits and vegetables to the meals that you are already making. Here are some easy and tasty ways to increase your intake of fresh fruits and veggies.

Add fresh veggies or fruit to salads to increase its nutri-ent content. Broccoli, fresh spinach, sugar snap peas, beans, or corn all make great salad toppings. Add mixed greens to fresh fruit. Depending on the season I add man-darins, tangerines, apples, oranges, strawberries, and grapes, and I always include raisins and almonds (although not fresh produce they are yummy and give added crunch to your salad). The sweetness of the fruit offsets the flavor of the vinaigrette and the greens. Don’t limit your salad veg-etables to just lettuce; fresh veggies like broccoli, snap peas, and tomatoes make a great addition to pasta salad.

Make pasta primavera (pasta with fresh vegetables), as an alternative to traditional spaghetti sauces. Any kind of vege-table will work, but most people try to use firm, crisp vegeta-bles like carrots, peas, bell peppers, and broccoli along with tomatoes. Pasta primavera is usually served with aromatic herbs and the sauce is usually made of garlic, parsley and olive oil, finished with Parmesan cheese. Or, if you want to stick with the traditional spaghetti sauce, add onions, mush-rooms or bell peppers to it.

Eat more fruits and vegetables for snacks. Instead of having chips and dip, try fresh cut veggies like celery, car-rots, or tomatoes, without dip or with a low-calorie dip or hummus. Peanut butter on celery or apples makes a great afternoon snack because it gives you a little pick-me-up.

Add more vegetables to the things you already make. For example, add veggies, such as corn or green beans to a can of soup. Or, when you prepare dinner meals like cas-seroles, pasta dishes and soups, double the veggies and reduce the amount of meat.

If you eat dessert all the time, eat fruit instead or as part of dessert. Take advantage of summer fruit. One of my favorite desserts during strawberry season is to top angel food cake with fresh strawberries and strawberry glaze or jelly. If I am really feeling indulgent, I add whipped cream.

Other dessert ideas include freezing chunks of bananas, strawberries, or other fruits and mix them in a blender with orange juice for a nice cool dessert. You can try different combinations of fruits and juices, and for a different taste, add nonfat yogurt. Another idea is to serve chunks of fruit with vanilla yogurt or low-fat vanilla pudding to make a par-fait.

MENTAL HEALTH

“Share the Care” is a strategy that empowers someone who

is ill or aging to have the support of friends, co-workers,

neighbors and members of their extended family to achieve

their goal of living as independently as possible.

The strategy of “Share the Care” revolves around inviting

people you know to help by volunteering their time to ac-

complish tasks that need doing: anything from running er-

rands to providing companionship. Volunteers get the

chance to weigh in on the jobs that they are comfortable

doing. Volunteers can give as much or as little time as they

choose. What volunteers do will vary, according to the

need.

If you want to learn more about how to start a Share the

Care group, please reach out to members of the Outagamie

Caregiver Coalition by calling 225-1745. A trained facilitator

will talk with you about organizing a group. The coalition

has “Share the Care” books available for loan through the

Thompson Community Center or information is available at

sharethecare.org

The Memory Loss Resource Center at the Thompson Community Center is for those experiencing dementia, their care partners, family and friends. Needs, the J.J. Keller Foundation and other community partners;

the Helen Bader Foundation; and the Rotary Club of Appleton.

Is it harder to do all the things that need to get done and

support your loved one who is getting frailer? Individuals

participating in the Adult Day Center enjoy recreational ac-

tivities, exercise options that fit their abilities, and compan-

ionship. Lunch, snacks and care services are provided.

Each participant and their family can select a schedule that

meets their needs, anywhere from a half day per week to

Advance Care Planning and Health Care

Power of Attorney (920) 225-1724

What if you are in an accident, are unconscious and can’t

speak for yourself. What if you are ill, slip into a coma and

can’t speak for yourself? What kind of medical care would

you want? Without an advance care plan your health team

won’t know your wishes, your family won’t know what you

want.

We all hope to communicate to the very end. It doesn’t al-

ways happen that way. Make sure your voice is heard, com-

plete an advance care plan and health care power of attor-

ney.
