SAINT HILARY (c. 315-367) January 13 Born in Poitiers, France, whose populace would later elect him bishop, Hilary, married and a father, was con-verted from paganism to Christianity through his reading of scripture. The focus of his prayerful study was the Prologue to the Gospel according to John, which portrays Jesus as the di-vine Logos, eternally begotten of the Father. As a result, Hilary became in the words of the biblical scholar Jerome, “the Latin Trum-pet against the Arians,” heretics who believed Jesus to be merely human, not divine. In defense of Christ’s divinity, Hilary was not only eloquent in debate but utterly fearless in the face of relentless persecution and even exile. Thus by the witness of his own discipleship, Hilary taught that faith in Jesus as the divine Son of God has consequences. Reflecting on Jesus’ challenge to his disci-ples, “You are the salt of the earth” (Matthew 5:13), Hilary notes that, as salt both preserves from corruption and adds savor to food, so must the faithful disciple bear a witness that, by word and example, leads others to immortality and virtuous living. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. News From The Streets…

What Makes A Grown Man Cry? By Mary Martha Primerano During this Christmas season when families and friends come together to celebrate with joy the opposite can be true for some of our homeless friends when loneliness can set in. While traveling through downtown we noticed a gentleman pushing a wheelchair across the street. We stopped, and asked him if he would like some food. He thought for small moment and said yes! We then agreed to meet down the block in a parking lot. Tony was a small framed gentleman, wearing a camouflage vest and pants. In his pocket he was carrying a small vase which we quickly discovered was his dad. During the course of our con-versation you could see that he was very proud of his war veteran father. He told us he had been dead for about 2 year now, and was carrying a portion of his ashes around with him. After loading Tony down with food and clothing we began to ask him questions like what brought you to Houston? How long have you been here? Where is your family? I ask these questions because I would like to hear their story. A lot of time we don’t get the luxury of knowing, but we still love and minister to them anyway. While speaking to Tony initially, he did not seem to have a care in the world. In fact the reason he was here in Texas was for a lady, 3 ladies in fact, in 3 different cities. What do you think about that he said, and now he finds himself being stolen from and just being released from jail? I do know someone who knows him better than he knows himself. I told him about the Lord, and he said that he did have a relationship with Him. As we parted, we offered prayer and with all heads bowed, we thanked God together for the sunny day, and then words like reconnect, restore, repair, bring together and reconcile began to flow. All of a sudden Tony began to weep like a baby - and this was not a pretty cry. He then reached out to hug and thank us for stopping to pray and care for his needs. On this same morning we ran into another homeless friend who we will call Kendall. As we began to catch up with Kendall we thought our friend was African American, but as it turns out his family lives in Orlando, Florida, and was originally from Haiti. Indeed we were surprised and again when it came time to pray the words reconnect and reconcile were used. With that Kendall began to pat his heart and reached out to hug us. He said our prayers had a way of getting to him. I believe this was only the work of God’s Holy Spirit also known as the Comforter. John 14:16 “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another helper, to be with you forever.” As the Christmas season whirls past us remember to reach out to the lonely and forgotten, and believe me they will be very grateful that you did.

UNGIDO POR DIOS

CON LA FUERZA DEL

ESPÍR ITU SANTO

Mateo 3,13-17.
