Emergencies happen at school
The school nurse is the professional responsible to plan for a response
to a health related emergency
The work of School Nurses helps to save lives.
Objectives: *Overview of Knox County Emergency Response System *Recognizing emergencies *Basic emergency care *How to be efficient in medical emergency situations
Objectives: *Narcan in the school setting *Mass Event Response *Stop the Bleed Program
*Overview of Knox County Emergency Response System - ALS vs BLS -EMD -First Responders -Standby for sporting events
*Recognizing emergencies -Emergency vs Non Emergency -Patient complaint (Life, Limb, or eyesight) -Simple A,B,C approach -Mental Status changes (A.V.P.U) -Signs of Shock
*Basic emergency care -Scene Safe -Determine MOI / NOI -Perform rapid head to toe assessment
*Basic emergency care continued -Gather S.A.M.P.L.E history -Baseline Vital Signs -If other equipment / MEDS are available consider use (AED,EPI Pen,Narcan,Glucose Kit,STB Kit,etc)
*Epi Pen Legislation -H.R.2094 (School Access to Emergency Epinephrine Act - Amends the Public Health Service Act, with respect to asthma-related grants for child health services, to give an additional preference to a state that allows self-administration of asthma and anaphylaxis medication and makes a certification concerning the adequacy of the state's civil liability protection law to protect trained school personnel who may administer epinephrine to a student reasonably believed to be having an anaphylactic reaction)
