Running with a Bad IdeaBy Kiersten Bartolotta When the new year of 2010 passed, I remembered that I was turning 40 years old thisMayandIstartedtocry.IknowIambeingababybutIwasveryunhappyaboutthe prospect of celebrating this birthday. When I got over my depression, I decided to do something about it. I wanted to challenge myself and attempt to accomplish a difficulttaskthisyear.Iwantedtohaveamemorableandexcitingyear.SoIcameupwith a really bad idea. I decided to run a marathon and raise money for a cause close to my heart, a cure for pancreatic cancer. Now, running a marathon is not a bad idea. Nor is raising money for pancreatic cancer research. These are not bad ideas FOR OTHER PEOPLE. But for me, I must have been eating dark chocolate when I came up with this monumental decision. I then informed all my loved ones, totally committing myself and acting like I really could run26.2milesandstillbealivetocelebratemy40thbirthday. To run a marathon, one must train hard over a period of weeks. I had no idea, obviously or I would never have made this crazy decision. I soon discovered that the longpracticerunsextendingoveraperiodof2to3hoursmademylegsfeelliketheyshouldbeamputated.Trydoingthiswiththeextra15poundsIjustcantgetoffmybody (I blame the third pregnancy two years ago). Add three active little kids, and a husbandwhoworksalotandIbelieveIhavemanylegitimateexcusesforwatchingOprah and eating potato chips during the day rather than training for a marathon. Now, it is true that I was laid off from work last year so some may say there is no reasonformetobelazy.However,Idisagree.Haveyouevertriedtoexercisewitha2yearoldathome?(Icantgetababysitter-Iamunemployed!)Andpleasedontgetmestartedonjoggingstrollers.MymotherandIarestillnottalkingbecauseofourlast conversation about those. I would have to feed him tooth decaying lollipops and other sugar-laden treats to keep him quiet. Good for him, mom? Training has been pure torture. I have been at it for about 8 weeks with 10 more weekstogo.YoucanseemerunningthroughSayville,usuallywithastrangepainedlookonmyface.Myrunningoutfitiscompletelyinappropriateformybodytype.OnlyOlympicathleticsshouldwearspandex.Irunatsuchaslowpace,somepeoplethink I am walking. I will continue on my journey running through Sayville to get ready for the big eventonMay2nd.Ifyouseeme,givemeawaveofencouragementandmaybeofferme a ride if I look like I am going to pass out. Bring Gatorade with you when you travel through town in case I am low on electrolytes, whatever that is. This is an accomplishment that I will complete and hopefully live to tell about. Turning 40 is tough enough. Competing in a marathon is even tougher. Is it worth it? No,butIalreadytoldeveryoneIwoulddoitandmyfannypackandspandexarereadyto go. Happy40thBirthdaytome!

Sunrise Drive Brings Brighter Smiles to Children in the Dominican Republic

Wondering what was with all those toothbrushes, toothpaste, anddentalfloss thathadbeencollectedatSunriseDrive,Sayville School District ? The answer was actually simple. Thanks to the generosity of students, teachers, staff, and families at Sunrise Drive, the Student Council collected dental-care items for children in the Dominican Republic . These children, who live three hours up the mountains in economically poor regions, have little resources for general healthy hygiene, including oral care. The connection between Sunrise Drive and the Dominican RepublicwasmadewhenFourth-gradeteacher,Mrs.SharonDonnelly learned that her daughter, Briana, a fourth-year nursing student at theUniversity ofRhode Island, wasjoining a group from Intercultural Nursing, Inc. heading to

that island nation. The mission of the nurse practitioners and student nurses was to set up clinics and disburse medications to the sick, as well as vitamins and other medical supplies that promote good health. Atotaloffiftypoundsonesuitcasefull,asallowedbytheairlinesofdentalsup-plies was collected by Sunrise Drive Student Council and sent along with the nursing students. Coincidentally, they arrived just days before the devastating earthquake that struckneighboringHaitimakingtheneedforsupplies even more crucial. The Sunrise Drive community should feel a sense of accomplishment for helping children in the Dominican Republic have brighter, healthier smiles.

Having Fun While Raising FundsLocal educators in the arts let it all hang outbyCaryMaya Sayville, Lands End Restaurant-According to The National Endowment for the Arts studies in the arts is an essential component of education. It believes that all children

benefit froman education in the artsas it provides them with opportunities to create, perform, and communicate through various artistic media. A dedicated group of local educa-tors gathered recently to raise funds for an organization that supports young artistic students, commune, dance, wine and dine together and honor one their own. On the evening of February 27th,Sayvilleschooldistrictteachersandadministratorsenjoyedafun-filledevent at a local sea-side eatery. State Wide Scare Of OldGeorge Munkenbeck on 1832 epidemicbyCaryMaya Sayville-InJuneof1832therelivedonCherryStreetinNewYorkCityafamilynamedFitzgerald.Mr.Fitzgeraldwasatailorandonthewayhomefromworkoneafter-noon the Irish immigrant fell ill. When he arrived home he discovered that, not only was hesickbuthiswholefamilywasaffectedaswell.WithintwohourshiswifeMaryandchildrenJeremiahandMargaretwereinverybadshape.Hearingsignsofextremeagonyemanating from the home, concerned neighbors called the police and when authorities

arrived they found the family so sick that they sent for medical care. Their bodies had been shrunk. They didnt look human at all but like some eerie mummies as theywere described atthe time. Their skin was wrinkled, their tongues were dry, and their faces were very pinched, a result of the extremepain.Youcouldhardly see their eyes, which had started to glaze over. By the nextdaythechildrenandMrs.Fitzger-ald were dead. Only the patriarch of the family survived. So began the cholera epidemicof1832. This story was recounted by histo-rianGeorgeMunkenbeckwhenhegavea presentation to the Sayville Historical Society on one of the most devastating and destructive waves of sickness ever to hittheNewYorkarea.TodayImgoingto be talking about thefirst incidenceofcholerainNewYorkcityandhowitaffectedNewYork,Munkenbeckex-plained. It will touch on how it affected usouthereandthewhole19thcenturyandputawholenewspinonhistory. Presented at the Edwards Street site of the society, the lecture covered a wide range of topics including the his-toryofthenewYorkarea,thestateofNewYorkCityitselfinthe19thcenturyand, of course, the catastrophic effect of the disease that took the lives of thou-sandsofNewYorkersandwroughtsuch

havoc on the state. MunkenbeckbeganhislecturebyreferringtothediseaseastheterrorfromtheEast.Heexplainedthatthemaladywasamysterytopeopleatthetimewhowereintotalshockwhen their friends, families and neighbors started becoming so ill, most dying within a few hours of being infected. He supplied a map of the route the malady probably took to eventually wind up on our shores as well. Sweeping out of India it quickly shot from Russia to Africa, across the European continent and eventually started slowly closing in on the ports around England, Germany, and France. When inhabitants of those countries emigratedtotheUnitedStates, thediseasemovedwiththem. SometimesknownasAsiaticofEpidemicCholera,choleraisaninfectious,gas-troenteritis(aninflammationofthestomachandintestines)condition.Transmissioncanoccur through sharing food or drinking water with victims and in its most severe forms the disease is one of the most rapidly fatal illnesses known. Symptoms may include a drop in blood pressure to hypotensive levels and death may follow in as little as 18 hours to severaldays.Fatalityratesarecurrently5%ofalltotalcasesinAfricaandlessthan1%elsewhere. In most cases, oral rehydration therapy (ORT) is highly effective. Safe and simple to administer, it replaces water and electrolytes since dehydration and electrolyte depletion occurs rapidly in sufferers. In severe cases the administration of intravenous rehydration solutions may be necessary. Tetracycline (an antibiotic used broadly to treat infections) is typically used as the primary antibiotic in treatment with other antibiotics suchascotrimoxazole,erythromycin,anddoxycylineutilizedaswell.Thesuccessoftreatmentissignificantlyaffectedbyspeedandmethodoftreatment.Inuntreatedcholerathemortalityratecanriseashighas50-60%. For She So Loved The SeaFriend Honors FriendbyCaryMaya

Eves Landing, Sayville-I had a dear, dear friend. She lived in Sayville and we spent many summers down at the Sayville beach together. We would bring food, books, music,herpitbull-mixBlazie,andthethreeof us would have a ball just soaking up the sun and laughing all our tails off.NowImaJewishkidfromtheBronx.What do I know about such places. The closest thing we had to going to the beach when I was a kid was when the local police would come by and turn the nozzles on thefirehydrantsandletusrunthroughthespray. But Evie was a Long Island girl, raised in the boating community. We would lounge on our blankets in the warmer weather and she would school me on the way things used to be. How you could jump from boat to boat in the old days and wasnt it such a shame things went so sour forthefishermen.Shewouldlayattheshoreline, take a mud bath and insist I join her. I tried folks, I really did. But, I dont know. Just so yicky. I mean whales have to go to the bathroom too. But Evie, well Evie wasafishoutofwatertobesure.InfactshealwaystoldmeshewasamermaidandIusuallybelievedher.Sadly,onJuly17th,2008Neptunecalledherhome.ThedayaftershefoundherfinIwenttoourfavoritespotatthebeachwithapadandpen,intendingto sit there, remember her, and write a poem in her honor. But the closer I got to the beach the more I realized it was just too soon. OntheafternoonofMarch20thofthisyear,thefirstdayofspring,Iwalkedtothatspot with my acoustic guitar, a rock, pictures of two of Evies prior canine companions,

two White Castle cheeseburgers, a bag of cheddar cheese popcorn, two purple sneakers, a single Sonoma 100 cigarette, a cup of coffee, an avocado, a copy of a poem I wrote for and about my friend, and a shovel and shears and went to a special spot tochristenEvesLanding,thenew-est portion of the Sayville beach. I went to a pre-selected area by a small bush, cut away the brush, dug a hole in the ground, ate one of the White Castles (Eves favorite that she would forcefeedmeagainstmywill)then

buriedtheotheroneforEve,buriedthesneakersnext(agiftfromamutualfriendofours), then put in the pictures of her dogs so she wouldnt be as lonely up (hopefully) there, ate half the avocado, gave Eve the other half as she lived for that food and planted the pit in the hole, lit the Sonoma 100 then threw the rest in there forhertofinishbecausebelievemeyouwouldntwant to be around Eve after her not smoking for a year and a half trust me and no need to thank me God (hopefully), I understand what you must have been going through, spread some popcorn on top of it all, recited the poem you will read at the end of this piece, wrapped it up pretty with a ribbon and inserted it in the hole, plugged up the hole, christened it with the cup of coffee, put the rock on topandwroteEvesLandingonit, thensatdownandplayedtheRollingStonessongYouCantAlwaysGetWhatYouWantasEviewasarabidStonesfan.AndthuswasbornEvesLanding, aquaint spot down by the bay where you can enjoy the surroundings with or without the companion or companions of your choice. I still had half a bag of popcorn left though. I had planned on walking to the water and hurling it into the bay so Eve the mermaid could munch on it. At the last minute however I thought to myself, Youknow, thisdoesntfeelrightbeingstrictlya solo project. I should involve at least one other personsohereswhatIdid.Idecidedtoapproachthenextpersonwhocameintomypathandaskthem if they would like to help me do something

totally, totally cool. A half an hour later a woman came by. She was alone and when she appeared in front me I introduced myself, told her what I had just done, talked a bit about Eve, and asked her if she would like to participate in the opening of the new beach by hurling the popcorn into the waves with me. She was thrilled. We were both absolutely into it. But it turned out I was wrong, She wasnt alone at all. Her daughter and her daughters friend joined us and heres the magical part : those two were hold-

ing leashes that sported the most beautiful Labrador puppies at the end of them. The poocheswererunningaround, snifflingand bouncing about when all of a sudden popcorn started washing back up from the bay on the waves. They were ecstatic and ate all of it up like champs. And thats how I know that, not only is Evie a mermaid now but a really powerful and compassionate one at that. Ever still the kind animal lover, she couldnt hog all the popcorn but insisted on taking a deep oceanic breath and blowing back some through the water, sharing some with her new friends. Just like she did with Blazie and I when she still owned her land legs. Now Im not going to tell you readers the exactlocationofEvesLanding.Thatisbe-tweenEvie,BlazieandI.Butsufficetosay,if youre ever at the Sayville bay and you notice an avocado plant at your side and you hear a Rolling Stones tune traveling through the breeze and smell a cheeseburger/popcorn scent winding through the wind then, well,

youre in the right place. And if you squint your eyes and see smoke rings bellow-ing out of the water in the bay, dont be alarmed. Its just my chain-smoking mermaid puffingawayfuriouslywhileshesmakingwavesintheocean.Justlikeshemadethemwhen she walked among us.

FOR SHE SO LOVED THE SEA(ODE TO EVE)

I push this pen at oceans end for she so loved the seaOnly place where found she grace, her truer self could be

I feed this page where moon moves wave for she adored the shoreWhereshedreposewherewaterflowsandletherspiritsoar

I glide my hand where sand greets land for she lived for the beachWhereshecouldland, letsoulexpand, herricheressencereach

I paint this prose where seagull crows for she felt safe neath sunSo lose the pose and earthly woes and feel her battles won

But sea for me holds tragedy, black ocean built of tearsFor mermaids gone yet I go on to suffer older years

So sit I lone, sad solo clone for early left so sheAnd pen this poem near Neptunes home

For she so loved the sea- Recited and buried at the opening of Eves Landing, Sayville, first burst of spring, 2010
