A Message From The President
SAntA BArBArA iS A PlACe We CAll HoMe full of beauty created by citizens, architects, planners,
landscape architects and business owners. over the generations we have been dedicated to creating, preserving and enriching this wonderful environment to ensure a truly Timeless Santa Barbara.
i am pleased to share with you several of Santa Barbara Beautiful’s projects we worked on this year.
engaging future artists and botanists, especially the young ones has continued to be an ongoing theme. this year we enjoyed another successful collaboration with local nonprofit Youth interactive with an original artwork for the i Madonnari Chalk Festival in front of the steps of Mission Santa Barbara. Please take a moment to see the commissioned recreation of this work in the lobby this evening. our springtime Arbor Day program continued to grow as we engaged over seven local schools this past year, celebrating the importance of trees, along with the city of Santa Barbara Parks Department. in partnership with the Arbor Day program, our botanical book donations to local school libraries continued to delight young students, as well as their teachers, administrators and parents. this year also saw the dedication of the beautiful Cota Sycamore near the Santa Barbara Mission to former Award’s Master of Ceremonies and “Mr. California,” the late Huell Howser.
our organization continues to be committed to our garden legacy. last year we funded the planting of street trees and were proud to once again be a key sponsor for the Santa Barbara Public Gardens Partnership. We also actively reached out with our ongoing community grants program to organizations working to celebrate our architectural heritage. We were proud to help support the lutah Maria riggs documentary, shown at the Santa Barbara international Film Festival, and have committed support for a collaboration between the Santa Barbara Historical Museum, the Art Design and Architecture Museum
at UCSB for an important upcoming exhibition on lutah Maria riggs’ architectural work.
Santa Barbara Beautiful continues to grow and develop working relationships with phenomenal organizations such as the Arts Commission of Santa Barbara County, the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden, lotusland, the Architectural Foundation, the lutah Maria riggs Society, Downtown Santa Barbara, the City Parks and recreation Department, and many local schools.
i am proud of our Board of Directors as their energy, commitment, and dedication are just some reasons why
Santa Barbara Beautiful is forty-nine years strong. A large “thank You!” goes to the Awards Committee who has made this evening so special: Co-Chairs Jeanette Casillas and ricardo Castellanos and the hard-working committee including Jacqueline Dyson, robert F. Adams, lori Kari, Suzanne Fairly-Green, Deborah Schwartz, Kerry Methner, Mark Whitehurst, leslee Sipress, Duke McPherson, as well as Dana Morrow at road Show Media. i also want to thank the many hours provided by our amazing Property Award Judges who included community leaders, art historians, real estate professionals, architects, landscape architects, and planners, as well as our talented group of voice-over artists.

Alma del Pueblo
Set BACK FroM SAntA BArBArA’S WiDe, PAlM-
SHADeD StreetS, Alma del Pueblo represents a modern take on classic Spanish-Colonial architecture, all the way from its courtyard fountain to its red-tiled rooftop.
With a mix of open international, one- and two-bedroom floorplans, each of Alma del Pueblo’s thirty-seven residences is beautifully appointed with the most elegantly designed and energy efficient amenities and finishes.
Years in the making and planning, Alma del Pueblo brings an elegant statement to the heart of the Arts District in Santa Barbara. Margaret l. Cafarelli, along with the design, development, and construction teams, have brought a phenomenal project to fruition for the benefit of residents and visitors. incorporating a public market, public art, drought tolerant landscaping, and urban housing, the project weaves among the paseos that wind around the historic Arlington theatre, providing an environment that adds immeasurably to the vitality of the urban fabric.
A spectacular addition to the Arts District, Alma del Pueblo is a superlative exercise in place-making. today, we honor Margaret l. Cafarelli and acknowledge her dedication and long-range vision with the 2014 Santa Barbara Beautiful President's Award.

Isabelle Clara Greene F.A.S.L.A.
SinCe 1964, neArlY 600 GArDenS, BotH in SAntA BArBArA AnD ACroSS tHe CoUntrY,
have come to bear the distinctive imprint of isabelle C. Greene. Her gardens are diverse, innovative and designed in a way that incorporates the surrounding buildings and garden features to appear as if they have been one for many years. Still creating striking and thoughtful landscapes at 80, isabelle’s career displays a standard of excellence easily matching her legacy as granddaughter of Henry Mather Greene, of Greene & Greene Architects, pioneers of the Craftsman movement in Southern California. Practicing and preaching sustainable design before it was vogue, isabelle’s singular artistic approach to design and her uncompromising implementation has lodged her securely in the history books of landscape architecture.
isabelle’s passion for the details of nature brought her to a bachelor’s degree in Botany at UClA, with an emphasis in California flora. thus in 1957, she began a career as a botanical illustrator. Her original pen and ink drawings for Walter H. Muller’s book, Botany, a Functional Approach, were awarded a permanent place in the Hunt Botanical library at Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh. then, at a close friend’s behest, isabelle designed the landscape around Dr. John Carleton’s new clinic opening in downtown Santa Barbara. the project won an award in 1966 and caught the attention of an interior designer, John Alexander, who asked her to design a landscape for his newly purchased home, the historic Hunt-Stambach house. And thus began her widely recognized career designing landscapes.
isabelle’s practice developed a garden aesthetic that boldly stepped outside of historical templates of european gardens, embracing the unique visual qualities of the individual geography of each project and applying a palette of plants that
reached far beyond garden vernacular. Deeply committed to sustainable practices, isabelle’s landscapes age well, flowing in response to land forms and climate and, thus, naturally conserving water, energy, and materials. She is known for her ‘museum art’-like garden vignettes, broad and diverse plant palettes, distinctive use of California’s native flora, deftly
ensconced stonework and an uncompromising rigor in the design and execution of her projects.
the 1980 design of Carol Valentine’s two-acre Montecito garden in the midst of a ten year drought cycle, with water rationing in effect included her ‘rice paddies from the air’ treatment of the garden’s hot southern exposure: terraced beds filled with bands of blue and silver succulents and anchored with aloes and agaves. this ecologically sensitive, sustainable, and visually arresting design for Carol Valentine sent ripples throughout the world of garden design, written about from the moment it was finished.
in 1989, isabelle created what longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania proudly calls their Silver Garden. Demonstrating that lushness is available in arid climates, the garden is entirely contained within a greenhouse, populated with drifts of gray and silver plants that hug a meandering ‘streambed’ path of blue and gray slate, with dracaenas, acacias, and tree aloes that now stretch to the glass ceiling.
She was inducted into the American Society of landscape Architects’ Class of Fellows in 1999. UCSB Art, Design & Architecture Museum produced, in 2005, a retrospective of her life’s work in art and landscape architecture. She is one of the seven female landscape architects featured for their groundbreaking work in the 2011 film Women in the Dirt.
Santa Barbara Beautiful Board of Director’s is pleased to honor Santa Barbara resident and landscape architect, isabelle C. Greene with the Heritage oak Award for lifetime Achievement.

Santa Barbara Bowl Foundation
tHiS YeAr tHe SAntA BArBArA BotAniC GArDen is pleased to establish the native Choice Award
to recognize leadership by an individual or organization in the use of California native plants in a designed landscape.
As the oldest botanic garden in the United States dedicated solely to the display and conservation of native flora, the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden is a passionate advocate for the importance of using California’s native plants in all landscape styles and settings. it gives us great pleasure to partner with Santa Barbara Beautiful to create an opportunity to recognize exemplary native landscapes within our community.
California native plants certainly add beauty to our landscapes. imagine our rolling hills without their iconic oaks and colorful wildflowers, or our mountain’s rocky foothills without their characteristic swathes of manzanita and ceanothus. Just as our rich cultural heritage and distinctive architecture define the look and feel of Santa Barbara, so do the native plants that have always called our wildlands home. in addition to their beauty, natives are naturally suited to our climate and tolerate a range of weather conditions—including extreme drought. they provide critical habitat for the birds, pollinators and other wildlife to thrive along the central coast. last, but not least, native plants are locally adapted and require hardly any environmentally damaging fertilizers and pesticides.
it is with great pleasure that, tonight, the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden honors another vital nonprofit in our community for its vision and environmental leadership for choosing natives in its spectacularly designed landscapes. We extend heartfelt congratulations to the Santa Barbara County Bowl and its Board of Directors as our inaugural native Choice Award winner.
the Bowl’s multi-phased landscape design renovation includes three sites that wholeheartedly reflect the spirit of the native Choice Award: the overlook, the Glen, and the landscaping around the new Box office. According to
the designer Susan Van Atta, the Bowl’s rustic character and beautiful setting inspired her scented native plantings, bioswales, subtle lighting, and stone pathways. together these elements establish a sense of tranquility and natural shelter. they reflect the site’s natural topography and, at the same time create a unique and unforgettable place what we all can all take pride in.

Laura Knight
Sue Van Horsen
Sue Van Horsen Artist Statement:I have always been different. Growing up in a blue-collar suburb of Los Angeles, I was well aware that I wasn’t like the other little girls in my school. I would visit their homes and as my eyes glazed over, would wonder at their dainty collections of seashells,
Barbie dolls, Breyer horses and other bric-a-brac. I too had collections: rusty doorplates, old machine parts and random rocks, which I would proudly display in my room. Having grown up near the oil derricks of Long Beach, I was awed by the gritty beauty of those bobbing bird-like contraptions. On car trips around town, I would take imaginary pictures of the industrial world that surrounded me. I was spellbound, snapping away with my invisible camera, as the mundane and cresote soaked landscape whizzed by.
In the present, I create many of my pieces through the use of digital technology, using elements from vintage photos, children’s scribbling, and scanned icons of the modern world, coupled with the rusty remnants and objects of industry.

DUrinG tHe lASt neArlY 50 YeArS of work in and around the City
of Santa Barbara, all the while developing Timeless community relationships, the community has witnessed Santa Barbara Beautiful extending its hand in support of community projects with an ongoing commitment to beautification of the place we call home. Some of those projects represent the wide open possibilities of the organization’s longstanding commitments to children and education about the natural world, such as Arbor Day programs in local schools. Some represent newly forged ties, such as the birth of a huge collaboration of nonprofit agencies in support of the Santa Barbara Public Gardens Partnership.
For Santa Barbara Beautiful, collaboration is key as the organization looks around the community for ways to offer a helping hand and give an encouraging boost to local programs with similar goals and missions. this year community collaborative grants were accepted by the Children’s Creative Project/i Madonnari, local elementary and secondary schools, the lutah Maria riggs Society, and the Milpas Community Association.
Santa Barbara Beautiful has been creating a legacy of community beautification since 1965 and continues to preserve and protect Santa Barbara’s rich and diverse urban forest through its commemorative tree and neighborhood street tree programs. SBB also supports and promotes art in public places and continues to recognize exceptional beautification efforts with its awards programs for individuals and organizations.

Tree City USASince 1980, the City of Santa Barbara has earned recognition as a “tree City USA” from the national Arbor Day Foundation for 34 consecutive years. the City of Santa Barbara honors SBB for its urban forest partnership with a yearly Arbor Day Proclamation at City Hall.
CommemorativeTree Programthe commemorative tree program has long been a favorite for families, friends, pet lovers and organizations. these dedication markers are installed at the base of city street trees. Proceeds from the plaques help fund the purchase of new street trees in collaboration with the City Parks & recreation Department.
Street Tree ProgramSanta Barbara Beautiful continues to preserve and protect Santa Barbara’s rich and diverse urban forest through its neighborhood street tree program. With funding from Santa Barbara Beautiful (raised through private donations) and the hard work of City Parks & recreation Department crews, this partnership has planted more than 13,000 street trees within the City of Santa Barbara. this year’s severe drought has impacted the street tree program, with preservation of existing trees now a priority.

COMMITMENT TO THE ARTS: Santa Barbara Beautiful continues its strong commitment to visual and cultural arts with community grants to help fund significant projects. recent collaborations include the new airport terminal mosaic medallion; restoration of Herbert Bayer’s Chromatic Gate; and the development of a Cultural Arts Master Plan.
this year the organization collaborated with the newly established lutah Maria riggs Society to help produce a feature length film documenting the life and works of lutah Maria riggs, one of Santa Barbara’s legendary female architects.
A Summer Solstice Festival grant helped fund artist's tools and supplies for the annual art-based festival.
A grant to the County Arts Commission helped fund the update of the Santa Barbara public art DVD, A Sense of Place, highlighting the public art in Santa Barbara in a high definition format. the update includes interviews from community leaders, artists, and arts organizers.
I MadonnariA large-scale chalk rendering of an original work of St. Barbara of the Roses by the Funk Zone’s Youth interactive art team lit up the old Mission plaza in dynamic blazing color for the i Madonnari italian Street Painting Festival over the Memorial Day Holiday. 2014 marked the seventh consecutive year SBB has sponsored this art project that benefits the Children’s Creative Project. this year's project was dynamic, and, through the process, mentored an energetic group of young artists.
COMMITMENT TOCOLLABORATION: the Santa Barbara Public Gardens Partnership - “Get inspired!” was the rallying cry heard from Santa Barbara’s many public gardens that have collaborated to develop the ongoing Public Gardens Partnership. the countywide collaboration promotes awareness of Santa Barbara's unique and inspiring public gardens, celebrates their beauty and benefits, and encourages their year-round enjoyment. events included botanical lectures by local garden experts, and tours of Casa Del Herrero; Ganna Walska lotusland; Alice Keck Park Memorial Garden; the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden, and rancho la Patera & Stow House, among others.
State Street FlagsAs Santa Barbara Beautiful entered its 49th year in 2014,
the community-supported non-profit organization continued its commitment to Downtown Santa Barbara’s State Street Flag Program. Brightly colored soft green flags fluttered along State Street for a week during April calling attention to the organization and its mission of promoting beautification through planting trees, recognizing excellence in architecture and landscaping, and promoting art in public places.
COMMITMENT TO EdUCATION:Arbor day ProgramSanta Barbara Beautiful continued its Arbor Day tradition of teaching the value of trees by planting nine trees at seven local schools as wll as a donating 32 tree-related books to all local elementary and secondary local schools and libraries in April, the perfect month to celebrate trees and horticulture.
Scholarship ProgramSanta Barbara Beautiful’s commitment to higher education now includes funding of an annual City College scholarship. the SBB scholarship grants a total of $1000 per year - $500 per semester - alternating each semester between environmental Horticulture and Visual Arts. the Scholarship testifies to SBB’s commitment to education and partnerships within the community.

Long a favorite program of parents, spouses, grandparents, children, pet lovers, and organizations, the Commemorative Tree Program, sponsored by Santa Barbara Beautiful, recently received a visual boost with the implementation of a new design for both the plaque and plaque holder.
Now those who wish to commemorate, honor, or remember someone or something special can do so with this attractive marker near almost any city street tree. And, because Santa Barbara Beautiful has participated in the planting of over 12,000 street trees, there are plenty of trees to choose from.
The new design, the first in over 30 years, offers a 4"x 6" horizontal plaque lettered on a dark background, embedded in a sandstone-colored concrete holder. The new design features improved toughness and durability.
