Marshall Wins Shuffleboard ChampionshipThe Zephyrhills club hosted another

Mingles/Singles Tournament on June 28. Pil Marshall (ZSC) won five matches and secured her first Mingles/Singles Championship.

Betmar’s Ball, Merrifield Win In Lakeland

The Lakeland Shuffleboard Club hosted the Singles/Mingles Championships on June 21. Earl Ball Swept the Pro Field and

some questioned if he needed gas money because he cleared the board, he never does that.

Lorraine Merrifield won five matches and added the Singles/Mingles Championship to her resume.

Lay, Worcester Win Championships

The Zephyrhills Shuffleboard Club hosted the Mingles/Singles tournament

June 7 and two of the club’s players came away with the championships.

R.L. Lay won the Pro Division losing only one match. He is one of Zephyrhills fine players who hasn’t played tournaments in recent years but has decided to try and make a comeback. Lay will be a handful to play against.

Steve Worcester won in the Amateur Division and with his ability he won’t be an amateur much longer. Worcester

swept the field winning every match.

Dwellely Wins First Championship

Linda Dwellely, an amateur from Betmar, won the June 4 Amateur Division of the Summer Series Mingle/Singles Shuffleboard Championships on the Betmar courts. Dwellely has been knocking on the door and now lays claim to her first championship of any kind.

City or Zephyrhills areas. In accordance with the rules of the Dixie Youth program, each player is six-years-old with the exception of one five-year-old.

Even at such a young age, these youngsters have worked just as hard as any high school team and are ecstatic that all of that work has paid off in a big way.

“This team is made up of kids who have played on three different teams, so they’ve been playing as a unit for only about six weeks,” said Kent. “We were really concerned, as a league here in San Antonio, that we also had all these kids who were inexperienced. We had to do a lot of teaching at a new level, a lot of refining.”

Well, that teaching paid off, as evidenced by the team’s performance in the Dixie Youth District 6 tournament held in June. The tournament was played in a double elimination format, meaning teams would be eliminated after two losses.

“We won our first game, lost our second to Brooksville, and then won our

next couple of games,” Kent said. “Then we were able to play Brooksville in the district championship game. We lost, though it was close. We finished in second place with Brooksville in first. In the state rules for tee ball, the first place team and the runner up team in each district are invited to the state tournament.”

This will not be Kent’s first time heading to the state championships. He and fellow All-Stars coach Trevor Fagan coached another team, the very first All-Star team they’d ever directed, through the district tournament and to the state championships nearly fifteen years ago.

Now Kent, Fagan, and coaches Ryan Bahr and Chris Burgos, are thrilled to be taking a new generation of players to the big stage.

“We’ll play until we’ve lost twice, just like in the district tournament, but I’m hoping we’ll make it to the championship,” said Kent. “The kids are so excited. We’ve just resumed practice and they haven’t lost a step. They are so into the game and so ready play.”

Not even coach Chris Kent is fast enough to catch a toss from one of his talented youngsters.

The rain could not deter the players from getting in on some valuable practice.

Florida Hospital Zephyrhills has been awarded the Mission: Lifeline Gold Receiving Quality Achievement Award from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association for implementing specific quality improvement measures for the treatment of patients who suffer severe heart attacks. This is one of the highest awards that a hospital can attain.

More than 250,000 people experience a ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction, known as a STEMI, annually in the United States. This is a very serious type of heart attack during which one of the heart’s major arteries that supplies

oxygen and nutrient-rich blood to the heart muscle is blocked. To prevent death, it’s critical to restore blood flow as quickly as possible, either by mechanically opening the blocked vessel or by providing clot-busting medication.

Florida Hospital Zephyrhills earned the prestigious award by meeting specific criteria and standards of performance for quick and appropriate treatment of a STEMI. These include emergency procedures to re-establish blood flow to blocked arteries in heart attack patients coming into the hospital directly or by transfer from another facility.

The American Heart Association’s Mission:

Lifeline program’s goal is to reduce barriers to prompt treatment for heart attacks, beginning with the 9-1-1 call, to EMS transport and continuing through hospital treatment and discharge. The initiative provides tools, training and other resources to support heart attack care following protocols from the most recent evidence-based treatment guidelines.

“Florida Hospital Zephyrhills is dedicated to providing optimal care for heart attack patients,” said Gwen Alonso, RN, Chief Nursing Officer. “We are very pleased to be recognized for our dedication and achievements in cardiac care through Mission: Lifeline.”

Rose Marie GrahamJames Gibson Graham Jr.

GRAHAM, Rose Marie, 80, and James Gibson Graham, 89, passed away at their Zephyrhills home on May 13, 2018, and May 17, 2018, respectively. Rose Marie was born May 21, 1937, in Harlan, Iowa, to William R. Jensen and Geraldine (Michaelson) Jensen. Her loving husband, James, was born April 20, 1929, in Pennsylvania to James Gibson Graham Sr. and Frances Villa (Davies) Graham. Rose Marie’s family left Iowa and moved to Monrovia, Calif., during World War II, like so many others. She graduated from Monrovia High School in 1955. She married her first husband, William Larry Bowden, a U.S. Marine Corps Veteran and Sheriff Reserve captain, and he preceded her in death in 2000. Rose Marie worked for the Tournament of Roses Parade and Rose Bowl, as a book keeper then office manager, for several years and she also worked for Reliant Electric. She moved to Duarte, Calif., in 1984 where she met her second husband, James Gibson Graham. They married in 1989 and stayed in Duarte until they moved to La Mirada, Calif. Rose Marie and James lived in La Mirada for 14 years, where Rose Marie worked for a local doctor until she retired. She enjoyed gardening, shopping at flea markets and antique markets, and going to garage and lawn sales. James went to Western Reserve Academy in Ohio for high school, where he was on the football, basketball, lacrosse, and track teams. He was voted most humorous in his class, which fits him as he was always telling a joke or two. Jim graduated in 1947 and joined the U.S. Navy the next year. He served in the Korean war as a weather observer in Newfoundland, where, so he said, he acquired the taste for Screech, which is a strong rum. He ended his Navy career with the rank of Petty Officer 2nd Class. After the Navy he attended college in Florida and elsewhere to learn the art of finance. He went on to be a vice president for several California banks, and later retired from the U.S. Small Business Administration. However, he remained active in finance, doing consulting work for the SBA until the early 2000s when he fully retired and moved to Maine with Rose to be closer to family. Rose Marie loved the Maine coast and thought Maine was a beautiful place to live. She was president of the Senior Citizens club in Hampden, Maine, for a period of time.

James, also knowns as “Gib”, was an avid golfer who used to go once a year to Lanai and Kauai with three buddies for an annual golf vacation until he met the love of his life Rose. He was a great golfer except for when it came to hole #8 at Bixby Village, where every time he teed off he’d land proverbially in the sand trap ... shall we say he gave his irons a whirl often afterwards. He also ran a college and pro football pool for 51 years. Before personal computers took control, he would work all the statistics and spreads by hand. His family believes he truly missed doing this once his health would no longer allow him to do so. Another passion of his was crossword puzzles. He loved to work the USA Today puzzles even up to a week before his passing. Rose Marie and Jim enjoyed spending time with each other and with their family, it was what truly made them happy. Rose Marie leaves behind two sons, Michael Scott (Sandy) Bowden of Zephyrhills and Christian R. (Deborah) Bowden of Lindale, Texas; one brother, Sam (Lorraine) Jensen of Washington State; six grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Jim (Gib) leaves behind a sister-in-law, Barbara - (Jim’s brother Robert passed earlier this year) - their children, Jacqueline, Chris and Brian; a brother, Malcolm and his son John; and many grandnieces and nephews. Rose Marie’s parents, William R. Jensen and Geraldine (Michaelson) Jensen, and James’s parents, James Gibson Graham Sr. and Frances Villa (Davies) Graham, preceded them in death. Rose Marie and James will be greatly missed by their family and friends. A memorial service was held on June 13 in Florida. They were buried at sea according to their wishes. Elizabeth ‘Liz’ Lemily FoleyFOLEY, Elizabeth “Liz” Lemily, 90, passed away peacefully at Gulfside Regional Hospice of Zephyrhills on June 25, 2018. She was born in Oceanside, Long Island, N.Y., on June 29, 1927. Liz married Warren J. Foley on June 10, 1949. They moved to Pinellas Park, where they lived for many years raising their three children. Her two sons, Steve (Anne Marie) of Oakland, Ark. and Michael (Theia) of Cotter, Ark., survive along with her daughter, Sue (Stan) Schlagenhauf of Wesley Chapel; and grandchildren, Paula Foley, Stephanie Foley, Mark Foley, Kristina Foley,

Burial will be private at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell. Hodges Family Funeral Home handled arrangements. There will be a memorial service at a later date at her daughter’s home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Gulfside Regional Hospice of Zephyrhills.

Pasco Residents Take Free Bus Rides

The Pasco County Public Transportation Department (PCPT) joined public transportation systems across the country to take part in the 13th annual National Dump the Pump Day on June 21. In honor of the day, free rides were offered on all regular fixed bus routes.

In response to the offer, Pasco County Public Transportation saw a ridership increase of about 10 percent that day. Daily ridership is typically between 2,800 and 3,000 and on Dump the Pump day, PCPT ridership was at 3,300, according to Tambrey Laine, Media Relations and Communications Manager for Pasco County.

Founded in 2006, National Dump the Pump Day encourages everyone to ride public transportation instead of driving. It’s a convenient, cost-effective travel option with gas prices approaching $3 per gallon.

Visit www.ridepcpt.com for more information on PCPT bus routes and schedules.

Bus operator Rick Leslie has driven all routes in Pasco County for the past four years. He works an eight-hour day and parks this bus in the storage/maintenance terminal in San Antonio. Photos by Richard K. Riley

Willie and Ella Collins of Trilby ride the bus often between Dade City and their home. They said they would have used the bus on Thursday even if it hadn’t been free, but were appreciative.
