SBIR Phases• Phase I – project feasibility; determines scientific,
technical and commercial merit of the ideas • Phase II – project development; funds the major
research and development effort including prototyping

Eligibility• Small business; < 500 employees• Independently owned and operated for profit • U.S. based company • Work performed in the U.S.• P.I. must spend more than ½ time employed by

Small Business Technology Transfer • Established by congress in 1992• Similar in structure to SBIR and funds
cooperative research and development projects in partnerships to move new technology to the marketplace

Eligibility • Firm < 500 employees; no size limit on research
institution• Research institution must be a U.S. college or
university • Work must be performed in U.S.• Firm must perform > 40% research • University must perform > 30% research • P.I. may be employed at firm or at research inst.
