Campus drinkingBartender, give me a Horny
Bull, and make it fast. I’ve got a class in five minutes.
A scene from the future? Or the present.
The student pub is just one facet of the college drinking scene of today. Presently, a number of colleges and universities in the state of Texas are seeking the addition of a bar to the campus. One exception is the University of Texas at Austin which since January of this year has had one.
The pub, called The Texas Tavern, is located in the temporary union, until the Texas Union is renovated. The bar currently serves all forms of alcoholic beverages to any student who is a legal adult.
Shirley Perry, director of the Texas Union, controlling body of the tavern, discussed the present situation at UT.
“There have been requests for an on-campus bar since the thirties and then again in the sixties. Then with the 18-year-old adult law the students got the support of the administration and, finally, the Board of Regents. The last obstacle was a city ordinance that was changed for us,” said Perry.
The state license for the pub is held and controlled by the regents, the director added.
At present, the bar serves beer from 11 a.m. until midnight and mixed drinks from 5 until mid
night, weekdays. On Saturday, alcoholic beverages are served from 6 p.m. until 1 a.m. Sunday the hours are from 6 p.m. until midnight.
“We hope to get the hours expanded with the Austin city council’s permission,” said Perry.
Perry said the prices, which range from 35|i for some beers to $1.35 for some types of mixed drinks, are some of the lowest in town. In addition, the tavern has a program of nightly discounts for students from different academic colleges.
Does a student pub increase problem drinking among students?
“We’ve been concerned about increases in excessive drinking, but at this time the university hasn’t seen any change,” said Perry-
Staff members working at the tavern are trained in identifying behaviorial problems, alcoholism and excessive drinking, said the union head. Off-duty university police work as identification checkers in the bar.
Another deterrant to excessive drinking is a state law making it illegal to take drinks out of a bar. Thus, the student can’t use the pub as a package store and take the booze home.
Another problem on campus is that of the student who drinks secretly.

“Private drinking among cd lege students can be a sign ofi| developing alcoholic,” said Di Sara Jones, psychologist at tfei TAMU Counseling Center.
Studies, by various professioi sociologists and psychologists, ii-i dicate that most college studM drink in groups and that indivii ual and private intoxication is iij abnormal condition.
Reasons given for most priva! drinking among college students the relief of tension and ment anguish. Many student problei drinkers begin with a drink to eat academic tensions and progress!! other reasons for drinking, sayi Dr. Clessen Martin, head of 4 TAMU psychology department.
Although private drinkia! poses a drinking problem to coi leges, the most prevalent drinkiii| takes place in the group.
The drinking group. Whatisit’ Researchers in alcoholism saj
surveys indicate two-thirds of to day’s college drinking takes tin form of a group activity. Thegea eral motivation for drinking ini group was given by most student! as “I want to follow the crowd"
Students readily form into groups because other memben can be related to with ease. Hit group serves to compare a student with other fellow students. It also acts as a source of standards that students can conform to.
