Council votes to create enterprise zones, accept medical clinic building
By Scott Luce The Abernathy City Coun
cil passed a resolution Monday night that could cr.eate enterprise zones in Abernathy.
A public hearing wi ll be conducted during the Nov. 12 meeting. The boundaries will be defined. The public will be able to ask questidnB about the zones and their ramtfications.
Property owners in enterprise zones can ask for tax abatements. Tax abatements would not reduce tax on existing values. Abatements can only be given for propertyvalut! increases above the · existing values.
Tfie council adopted the resolution with a 4-0-1 vote. Councilman Lynn Goble ab-stained. ,
Councilman Chris Lopez abstained on one of the next two votes that affected the medical clinic.
The council voted unanimously to appoint Ben Linton as the city's representative in attempting to acquire the Abernathy Medical Clinic building from Covenant Hospital in
Lubbock. Lopez abstained when a vote
was offered to have t.he city pay building maintenance, util ities, janitorial expenses, etc., on a year-to-year basis if the building was donated to Abernathy EMS. The other four councilmen voted for the motion.
In other business, the council was in total agreement to adopt a resoiution that states Grant Works, Inc., will be used to acquire grants for the city.
Va.riance requests by Clyde Vandygriff and Mike Grimsley for carports were unanimously granted. The city received no responses from nearby property owners that objected to the carports.
An $8,727 check from University Medical Center will be divided as bonuses among Abernathy EMS volunteers that were active members of the service as of Jan. 1, 200 1.
Rosie. Brown's offer to purchase a lot at 507 Ave. C was accepted. She offered $1,128.66. The city's portion of those back taxes will be about

Abernathy Junior High School will hold a fundraising dinner from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. today in the high school ag shop.
The cost for the Mexican stack plate is $5.

$440.23. The city will again partici
pate in a join\ street seal coating project with area cities and directed by Oller Engineering.
The quarterly investment report stated the city has $830,000 in general fund cer
. tificates of deposit with First State Bank. The genera) fund is supported by tax dollars .
Little cotton pickers
The water-sewer fund had CD's worth $850,000. City manager Frank Russell said that since the report was issued, the city has spent$68,000 for costs related to the city's new water standpipe in east Abernathy. Utility sales support the water-sewer fund.
The city has another $65,741.32 in an airport fund CD. The airport fund Is not taxpayer supported.
Another $78,446.08 CD can only be used for water system construction projects.
Josie DeAnda holds the sack while some ofMelodie Voigt's pre-k students deposit their harvest. The students went to Floyd Myatt's fa1·m nm·th of Abe1·nathy TuesdilY mo1·ning to experience cotton picking first hand. Before ltmg, the students were strung out from one end of the field to the other- the next boll was always better. Cotton ha1·vesting is in full swing on the South Plains. Scot Wesley b1·ought in Abernathy's first bale-during the first pm·t of September at City Gin.
The total of the CD's before maturity is over $1.8 mi ll ion. Adding over $301,000 in the operating accounts brings the city's cash position to a $2,125,233.46 total.
Owls showing claws "I've picked them the last
two years. They have the most physical talent in the district.
They' re ju st hitting their stride," said Dcwuyne Sexton.
The Abcrnnthy ·head conch
Aberl)athy coach Dewayne Sexton named all his linemen as linemen of the week after the win over Floydada. Kneeling, from left, m·e Andy Grimsley, 'rye Fot·tcnbe...-y, Jared Shannon, Brandon King and Cody Caraway. Standing, from left, is tight end Jm·cmy Stone,
· scout team player Uriah Chambers, defense player Arturo Trevino, special teams playet· Nick Bowe, smash mouth and co-offense playct· Kenneth McKinnon and co-offensive players Matt Pierce and 'l't·ey Pad~n- (Not pictut·cd is tight end Keith Gist.) ·
. Donation with apprf!ciation Abernathy elementary students conducted a spare change drive for the victims of the Sept. ll tenor attacks in Washingtol), D.C., and New York, Principal Larry Aldridge (below, far left) announced the st.udents had collected 170 pounds of change in addition to several dollars in paper currency. In the same picture, Abernathy Chief of Police .Luis Villarreal accepts some letters of appreciation from the students. · Similar presentations were made to the fire department and EMS. At left, Abernathy Boy Scouts perform a flag raising ceremony Sept. 28 prior to addresses given by EMS directorJody McKinney, Fire Chief Kelly Vandygriff and Villar•·eal. ·
wasn 't talking about his Antelopes. He was referring to the Hale Center Owb who come calling tonight.
Both teams ure un beaten (2-0) in District 5-AA. The Ow Is are coming otr a big 27-20 win over Friona. HC a lso bea t Nazareth when the Sw i Its were No. 10 in 1A.
"I think that's the first game Friona lost since coming down to 2A," Sexton said.
The Owls' Willi e Jo e Johnson caught a 3-ya rd TD passfromJacob Reitrwith 1:08 left in the game. ,Johnson inte rcepted a Friona pass with 19 seconds left to secure lite win .
"Johnson is one of the best running backs in the area. He can go outside, inside and he
catches the ball outofthe backfie ld," Sexton said. "Reiff runs the ball better than he throws it. He 's u good linebacker, too.
"They've got size, speed and strength up front. They play a lot of players both ways."
Joseph Bernal is one of the top ureu pass receivers as is Larry Espinoza.
"They are "two of the better . receivers. Ifthey get to it, they'll
catch it . They're both good defensive players, too. Mark Espinoza is a big 195-pound fullback. He powers over people and he's a great linebacker."
'l'he Owls are big - six linemen arc lis ted over 200 pounds - and they could have an a tti tude after losing to Abernathy 26-20 in double overtime last ycar .. That loss eliminated HC from the playoll's.
The Lopes will be without four players. 'l'wo went out for grades. HunningbackJoePena will mi ss another week with a hip injury. Hugo Martinez ~ill be out with a knee inju.ry.
"We arc real thin on the line," Sexton said.
Th e Lopes were the best offensive ZA team going into last week's game. They shou ld remai n among the lenders . H~;~le Center wnsn't in the top 12 offensively.
Converse ly. Abernathy was not among the top 12 defensive teums. The Owls were second best in the area. Hale Center's ranking should take a hit a fter a llow ing 245 yards on the ground to Friona.
Abernathy hopes the Owl defense has it~ hand full with Kenneth JVlc[{j nnop . McKinnon went over 1.000 yards last week against Floydada. He's averaging over ().4 yards a carry.
When he's not runnin g, Matt Pierce, batt ling for first in 2A passers , is throwing to three of the top 12 receiversTrey Paden, Michael Christian and James McKinnon .
FFA tractor team sponsors fund raisers for contest trip
