Host Configuration• Host should be located near library servers for performance

 – Branch offices should have both a host and library server• Host Settings

 – Virtual Machine Reserve – percentage of logical CPU reserved for

 – Virtual Machine Limit – percentage of logical CPU that VMs are nexceed

• VMM File Paths (Separate VMM paths from OS drive incase OS

be reinstalled)• Security

 – Recommended to use same domain account that the VMM Servi

 – Consider changing predictable port numbers

 – Perimeter network requires manual installation of VMM agent

Deploying the VMM Agen• Communication between host & VMM Server

• Remote Management (WinRM) required• Installed automatically when adding new host or library server

 – SMB, RPC & DCOM Port Range

 – Can secure with SMB packet signing or IPSec

• Can be installed from media – Management: Port 80 / Data: Port 443

 – Change default ports to increase security

• Must install locally for perimeter servers – Local agent service uses randomized name

 – VMs cannot be migrated between perimeter & standard hosts

VMM Firewall Ports

• VMM can have many uses for ports

• Port numbers configured during VMM setup oregistry

• Changing default port numbers is a default bespractice

Intelligent Placement• Automates placement logic on hosts

• Capacity planning improves resource utilization

• Spreads VMs across nodes

• ‘Star-Rated’ results for easy decision making

• Customizable algorithm

P2V Conversion• Converts an OS on physical hardware to a VM• Online conversions use VSS to convert physical server to

the OS and applications are running on the physical serve• Offline conversions use Windows PE to convert the physi

to a VM while the OS and applications are not running onsource server

• Use Microsoft Assessment and Planning Toolkit (MAP) fo

guidance• Considerations

 – New VM has same computer identity as physical computer

V2V with VMware• Converts existing VMware VMs to VMs running on Hyper-V

• Converting VMware-based virtual machines – From ESX host, Library or File Share

 – Original VM is unaffected

 – .vmdk files are used as source to build .vhd

• Virtual Machine files – .vmx

 – .vmdk

• Remove VM Tools from VMware VM• Run the conversion wizard:

 – Use the Convert Virtual Machine Wizard for offline V2V conversions

 – Use the Convert Physical Server Wizard for online P2V conversions

 – The Convert Physical Server Wizard automatically takes care of SCSI to IDE con

V2V with Virtual Server 2005

• V2V migrate existing VMs running on VirtuServer 2005 to Hyper-V – Simple process as both use the same VHD for

• VMM installs the correct version of Virtua2005 R2 automatically if not already insta

• Built in repair to fix failed VM

• Installs Integration Services in Hyper-V anadditions in Virtual Server

Migration to a New Host

• Migration is supported only between compatible p

• During migration, virtual machine files are moved new host

• The VM remains online as long as possible during

• Migrate VMs by drag-and-drop to a new host grou

uses Intelligent Placement to pick the best host

SAN & LAN Migration• Storage (SAN) migration is faster than network (LAN) mig

• Move across a SAN or LAN – SAN migration is default

 – LAN migration can be selected from Migrate VM Wizard

• Move VM between different hosts (Migrate)

• Move VM to storage on

same host (Migrate Storage)• If VM is running, VM will

pause and state of VMwill also be migrated

Quick Storage Migration (QS• Network migration to new storage or a new cluster

 – Supports Cluster Shared Volumes (CSV)• VM stays online for as long as possible

• Process – Snapshot of running VM taken

 – Base VHD copies to new location (VM is still running)

 – Save State the VM (clients are now disconnected)

 – Export VM configuration and snapshot

 – Import VM configuration to new host

 – Merge snapshot & resume Save State

 – Client can reconnect

Virtual Machine Cloning• Create a clone or backup from an existing VM or VM in th

• Considerations – VMs must be stopped before cloning

 – During cloning, the operating system is not generalized

 – VMM assigns a different machine name to a cloned VM if yon the same host as the original

 –

Making an exact copy of the original VM can cause AD issu• Scenarios

 – Creates a ‘golden’ copy of production environment

 – Test updates and patches before production

Other Common Tasks• Add or remove VMM administrators

• Create host groups• Add VM hosts

• Set up self-service

• Configure Operations Manager 2007 integration with VM

• Configure VMM system settings

• Configure VMM to manage a VMware VI3 environment

• Create VMM Library

• Limit file system permissions with ACLs

• Create PowerShell scripts

Takeaways

• Deploy the host agents and configure the before configuring VMs

• Make newly deployed VMs highly-availablthe best host using Intelligent Placement

• Use P2V conversion with the MAP Toolkit convert traditional servers into VMs

• Use V2V conversion for Virtual Server andVMware VMs to move them to Hyper-V
