A New Academy Visitors CenterUniting the nation’s military past with the bold, new directions of the Army’s future, the United States Military Academy occupies a singular place in American culture. A visit to post should clearly communicate both the Academy’s deep connection to history and its modern outlook. Currently, all visitors pass through the Visitors Center, housed in the old Ladycliff College library building. As visitors’ first stop on campus, the center shapes their experiences and expectations—and it is not doing this job well. It is inadequate not only in size and for aesthetic reasons—it has not been substantially updated since 1989—but also because it does not properly capture USMA’s reputation as a premier institution of higher learning and leadership development for the Army.

In response to this need, the West Point Association of Graduates is seeking funding to build a new Visitors Center of nearly 15,000 square feet to tell the West Point story. Envisioned as a 21st-century “Experience Hub,” the center will feature a striking entry pavilion, high-tech exhibits, a state-of-the-art theater, and new artifacts for its more than 250,000 annual guests to enjoy. The center will also employ the latest architectural innovations to capitalize on natural light and

existing terrain, it will be re-oriented to take advantage of the scenic power of the Hudson River, and it will allow for a possible future connection to the adjacent West Point Museum (the center’s exterior will harmonize with that of this existing facility).

While West Point is steeped in tradition, it is also an institution that thrives on innovation and adaptation. Inside the Visitors Center, exhibits will offer visitors a dynamic, energizing experience that reinforces these concepts. Through highly animated and multi-media displays, exhibit spaces will explore and illustrate the themes of the Long Gray Line, West Point: The National Treasure, Developing Leaders of Character, the Corps of Cadets, Leaders of Character Ready to Serve, and Recalling the Past: Inspiring the Future. Visitors will leave the building with a profound sense of pride in the Unites States Military Academy and an understanding of what it provides and represents to the nation.

Front Door to the AcademyThe new Visitors Center would join the legion of “must sees” at West Point, such as the Cadet Chapel, the Cemetery, and Trophy Point. Moreover, visitors who had a positive experience at the center will be motivated to explore some of the other activities and venues that the Academy has to offer, such as sporting events, Eisenhower Hall productions, or Cadet Parades on the Plain (and they might start following West Point online by visiting its websites or its social media pages).

The proposed Visitors Center will be the front door to the Academy’s more than 1 million annual tourists, including history buffs, school-age children, and tourists from around the world. Here, they will learn about the role West Point’s military training and educational curriculum play in America’s present and its future. As the familiar saying goes, you only get one chance to make a first impression; the new USMA Visitors Center will make that chance count.

With your help, USMA can improve the experience for the more than two million visitors expected to visit the center over the next decade. Through the new Visitors Center, the Academy will promote a more fine-tuned understanding of the Academy’s history and future. In doing so, it can increase support for its mission and inspire a new generation to serve our Army and our nation.

Please join us as we ensure West Point’s reputation as a leader in all endeavors, and take pride in the transformative power of the generous gift you can make today.

“The Malek West Point Visitors Center will be reflective of the esteemed reputation of USMA. It will provide the hundreds of thousands of visitors to West Point the opportunity to see how the Academy develops our nation’s future leaders across the four pillars of development—military, academic, physical, and character.” — LTC Chris Kasker, USMA Public Affairs Officer

“The largest gift-funded construction project since the completion of the Kimsey Center in 2003, the new Malek West Point Vistor Center will be the front door to the Academy and a compelling way to share the West Point story with the nation and to inspire future generations of cadets and leaders.” — Todd A. Browne ’85, President & CEO, West Point Assoication of Graduates
