Bu ild you r s k ills and en jo y th e hobby m ore !

MOSt modelers I know are on a"continuous improvement" path:

hardly a project is completedwithout a little regret about something

they wish had turned out better.Maybe the parts didn't fit the way we

thought they should; the paint didn't laydown just right; the decals didn't look

realistic; so many things can leave abuilder with regrets about the finished

product, or at least the desire to improve

the next model.Fortunately, it's usually

the latter. Self-motivation

is a powerful thing. That's why we have this

Skill-Builder Special: tohelp you build better

models on a consistentbasis, and enjoy the hobby

even more.

Ever have a finish

feature about the Chevy Monte Carlo

that Dale Earnhardt used to win his first

race in 1979.If you like Funny Cars ~ early Funny

Cars, especially - but are hesitant about

adding detail to stock kits, check outTim Boyd's story about detailing the

engine bays of these cars.

CLASSIC KITS As promised last issue,we're starting a new series of one-page

articles by Tim Boyd that highlight

significant kits from the

rich history of car

modeling. The seriesbegins with the kit that got

Tim started in the hobby, and it's an interesting

subject - and story.

Look tor more KitClassics in many of our

future issues.

ruined because the paint

bled through? There's a way to solve

that problem.

It took a long time for the Car of

Tomorrow to make it to market; andwhen it did, it was a basic snap kit.

That's OK, but if you'd like a bit more

detail, we'll show you how to do that.

Clay Kemp tackles a popular subject:how to get started using resin parts.

Their care-and-feeding is a bit different

from styrene, but resin parts are a

convenient, popular way to upgrade a

model, or build a version of a car that

was never kitted.Craft-store embossing powder is

being used more often these days to

create realistic-looking carpet. See page

22 for ways to apply and paint it.

And speaking of snap kits, EvanHermel shows how to get started in

truck modeling with a basic Peterbilt

kit. And he offers a few simple upgradesto add realism.

Dave Thibodeau offers a look at anentry-level NASCAR build with his

DIGITAL SCALE AUTO By now you're

probably aware that we have added a

digital delivery option (as have as theother Kalmbach magazines). And the

word option is important, because that's

what it is: another way to read the bestcar-modeling magazine around.

You can continue with the printversion; go all-in on digital; or you can

take advantage of special pricing (see

our ads) and do both. Plenty offlexibility there!

The digital edition - which has the

same great content as the print version-offers a degree of flexibility we haven't

had before in how, when, and where themagazine can be read, And it's a

developing, oncoming part of the

magazine world. It's something that's new and

different, sure, but it's exciting because

it's new and different. Think of it asanother way to enhance the enjoymentof your hobby - another sort of skill-builder, if you will.

,Photoetched mesh source? Can you tell me where to buy the

photoetched diamond-shaped mesh

mentioned in the February 2011 issue, article by Rod Maskiw on page 23, step

17of the article?- Rich Williams

viaE-mail

J bought that screenfrom a local hobbyshop about six years ago.All I remember is

that it was beside the K&S metal tubingl

sheet rack, and the shop catered mostly to

model-railroadpeople. I lookedfor a scrap

of the screen and couldn'tfind it, thinking

maybe there wouldbe an ID on the sheet.

Yunick decalsIn the June 2011 issue (cover: Smokey

Yunick's Camaro) I am building thismodel but cannot find the #13 and

roundels , Can you let me know where to

get these? Thank you.

- Nick AndersonviaE-Mail

Nick,You willneed the 196 4 - 1 96 5 Cobra

Daytona sheetfrom Steve at Vintage

Racing Miniatures (v-r-m.com) to do the

roundels and #13s on the car.I had that

sheet inmy stash for future projects, and

wasableto use them for my build. But they

are the correctfont and everything

As a bonusyou got a sheet to build a1964-1965 Cobra Daytona coupe!

Top StudioIn your October 2011 issue, Mr. Kemp

mentioned some aftermarket parts by the

name of a company, Top Studio. Where

do I fmd Top Studio products? In your "Building The Legends" series

is it open to anyone, or do I have to own

and operate my own machine shop? Ha,

ha! Just kidding; not everyone has or canafford a lathe in their garage.Love your magazine.

TIPS&T E C H BY KEN HAMILTON

WE'RE GOING to kick off this

installment with one for thediorama builders. I'm deep into a

diorama that will include different areas

of asphalt pavement.

There are a number of ways to modelasphalt, from mixing sand and plaster tosimply gluing down pieces of black

sandpaper.

In a search for just the right look forthis diorama, I decided to try a can of

Rust-Oleum Multi-Color Texture Aged

Iron 223525, which turned out to betop-notch for creating an effortless

asphalt surface. The texture is perfect for 1I25-scale

asphalt, and the color combination - a

near-black with specks of deep gray andwhite - produces a convincing dark

asphalt appearance, right out of the can.If you have a scene that calls for a

lighter shade, the dried texture paint canbe lightened with white or gray washes. If you're looking for some quick-

and-easy two-lane blacktop, this is thestuff to get. I think you'll be as

impressed as I was. And tell the sales-

person that "Tips &Tech" sent you!

Now let's move on to some great stufffrom the mailbag. We begin with two

similar questions sent in by separate

readers:

0 1 : I have some old models that were

not kept in a cabinet, and they got dusty.

While I was cleaning the models with

water and a soft brush, I noticed some

of the chrome has faded to almost bare

plastic over time.Should I coat the chrome with

something to prevent this? Or is it better

remove the chrome and paint it on, oruse Bare-Metal foil? Does Bare-Metal

foil degrade over time?

Is there a good way to clean models ?

- Michael Dodd

Queensland, Australia

02: I have had problems recently with

the chrome plating 011 parts from several

newer kits rubbing off with handling. I

have tried handling the parts with

cotton gloves, but it has made nodifference.

These days, before I start to handle

any chrome parts, I rub the sprue

between my fingers to test its durability. Some of it takes surprisingly little

rubbing to get down to bare plastic.

Do you have any tips to combat this?I have considered spraying the chrome

sprues with clear gloss before using theparts. I would appreciate your

comments.

- Malcolm Hayesvia E-mail

Ken: Plating plastic is one of thosegreat, inconsistent mysteries of life.

Without getting too scientific, thevacuum-plating process can vary from

manufacturer to manufacturer, and even

from batch to batch. Unfortunately, there's no way around chrome that

doesn't hold up.Although we've seen a few successful

attempts at clearcoating kit chrome as apreventive measure, the more-

permanent solution is to strip the parts

and refinish them, That isn't a badthing, because it allows us to sand off

mold lines and fill sink holes that showup in kit chrome.

Fortunately, we have options when it

comes to rechroming parts.If you're airbrush-savvy, Alclad is a

great way to create a brilliant finish.Follow the directions (a gloss enamelbase coat, followed by light passes of

Alclad) and you'll get good results.Bare-Metal foil is good for trim,

emblems, and window surrounds, but itcan be tricky to work with - especially i

it's old.

Another solution is to mount the

parts on a homemade tree and send

them out to be chromed by an

aftermarket company that specializes in

that technique.Check the ad section of this issue, or

T IP O F T H E M O N T H : A ccu ra te h o le s in ro u n d pa r ts

T ed B o we s' tip offers a great way to drill accurate holesinto small-diameter rod and tubing. Let's find out how he

does it:

"Trying to drill holes in round objects can be difficult -

especially when you want them centered. When adding

pins into a Funny Car frame to hold hoses, seat belts, etc.,

I came up with a different idea."I got two 1/2-inch-long blocks of styrene, each twice as

wide as the frame rail, and clamped them together. I then

drilled a hole down the middle of the joint, using a drill bit

the same size of the frame's outside diameter.

"With the two pieces still bound together, I drilled a

hole the size of the pin through both pieces,

perpendicular to the first hole. Separate the two pieces,

and you have two hole templates. Place one over the

round frame member, and use the smaller hole for a drill

guide."

the Internet, for companies that providethis service.

As for cleaning models, Michael, start

by dusting them with a soft bristle

brush. Then, if necessary, carefully wipethe model with a moist cloth or cotton

swab (for the hard-to-reach places).

If stubborn dirt still remains, add asmall amount of liquid dish detergent to

the water used to moisten the cloth.

Apply a light hand and have plenty ofpatience, and the payoff will be a bright,

shiny model.

Thanks for the questions, gentlemen.

Tip: My wife tossed out a jewelry

cleaner container that is perfect forcleaning small resin parts, or stripping

chrome and old paint.

It's an eight-ounce plastic jar that hasa removable basket inside to hold the

items. In the middle of the basket is thehandle, and even a brush for scrubbing

those small areas. lust put some of your

favorite cleaner or stripper in, and soakthose problems away.

- Mark Hook

Ferndale, New York

Tip: When you replace your automaticdishwasher, keep the silverware tray. I

have found that when you place a

corrugated insert in the bottom, the tray

makes a wonderful storage system for

extra sprue clippings. You can sort thepieces by color, and always find a handy

bit of sprue whenever you need it.

- lake Maring

Huntington Beach, California

Ken: Inventive modelers such as Mark

and lake can always find uses for

discarded household items. The silverware tray storage basket can

also be used for pieces of stripwood andstyrene. Thanks for the tips!

Q: I just bought a dehydrator to improve

my paint jobs. Do you have any tips on

how to use one?At what temperature it should be set?

How long to keep the parts in? I've

heard several opinions about using one. Thanks for a great magazine.

- Darin Young

viaE-mail

Ken: Thanks, Darin. We're glad you likeScale Auto, and we're glad you took the

time to write.A dehydrator is a handy tool to keep

in your arsenal of modeling supplies,

but it's by no means a magic solution to

obtaining better paint jobs.Assuming you're proficient with the

basics of painting (which we confirmed

through a series of E-mails) let's touch

on the basics of dehydrators.

Paint dries through the process ofevaporation. There's a bunch other of

scientific stuff involved (as with theearlier chrome-plating question) thattends to give us a headache, so for our

purposes, let's just say that drying occurswhen solvents carrying the pigment

disperse into the atmosphere, leaving

behind a hard layer of color.Dehydrators speed up that process by

adding heat to the equation whileallowing air - an important part of the

evaporation process - to circulatearound the model. That's why drying a

model in the oven isn't a great idea:

There's little to no airtIow.Generally, a good temperature is 90

to 100 degrees for plastic, and 10 to 15degrees less for resin. It wouldn't hurt to experiment with a

test model or two to dial-in what's bestfor your dehydrator. Time depends a lot

on the paint, and could vary from a fewhours to a maximum of 18-24 hours, which should dry anything.

Another Tip: Don't stick your thumb

into the paint to see if it's done; do a

sniff check.

If you smell solvents, the paint is stillgassing out. Sniffing won't work with

water-based paints, so allow some extra

time in the dryer.

We hope this helps, Darin.

Tip: I am working on a 1964 Pontiac

GTO. I was reviewing my referencephotos, trying to figure out how to make

the bolt heads that hold on the bumpers.

I was able to drill small holes in thebumper where the bolt head would

show. I trimmed regular sewing pins to

shorten the length, and glued them in

place. The pinhead was the correct scale

and finish.I think it came out great, and I didn't

have to leave the house or hit the

Internet to get what I needed. I hope

this is helpful to someone.

- Vincent Genn

Fairless Hills, Pennsylvania

Tip: Want a cheap source of wire of

various sizes? Find a guitar player, and

ask him to save his old strings when hechanges them.

- Wayne Pickett

Concord, North Carolina

~ W ANT M ORE ?Subscribers can access the "Tips &Tech" archive at ScaleAutoMag.com

Ken: Thanks, Wayne. Not only aresingle-strand guitar strings good for

using as small wire, the thicker, wound

strings have several uses too - includingflexible electrical conduit in a diorama.

The important thing, as you already

know, is to be on the lookout forsupplies in the least likely of places.

Tip: Interiors in full-scale vehicles are

generally made from several materials, but they are usually the same color.

For cases where I have a combination

of doth and plastic, vinyl or leather,

rather than masking and painting nat

for the cloth and semigloss foreverything else, I paint everything flat.

When it is dry, I use a soft cloth witha dab of Novus #2 to "polish" a light

sheen onto the plastic, leather, or vinylsurfaces. Far less cumbersome than

trying to mask interior surfaces.- Andrew J Brezinsk

Huntsville, Alabama

Tip: I was having a difficult time trying

to find past Scale Auto articles and tips.

To make the process easier, I scannedthe contents pages of my back issues

and created a PDF file to store thescanned pages. You could also print

hard copies and put them in a folder or

binder.

Notes can be added for tips, favorite

model photos, or other items not listedin the contents.

Now it's much quicker to find

something, and a side benefit is that I'll

always get a new idea or technique for acurrent project or new inspiration for

another one.- Ted Bow

NoW that Revell Germany hasrereleased the old Revell Porsche

Carrera RS 3.0, another significant

race car can be modeled: the RSR.

Introduced in 1973, the RSR quickly

established itself, with wins at the 24Hours of Daytona, dominating the

IMSA Camel GT series, and winningthe Trans Am championship that year.

The RSR performed well across the

pond in Europe too, taking the class winat Le Mans and taking lst and 2nd at

the last Targa Florio.

The RSR was also the car chosen forRoger Penske's new International Race

of Champions series.Attracting the best drivers from

Formula 1, NASCAR, Can-Am, and

Indy, the series was held at Riverside in

October 1973, followed by a grand

finale at Daytona in February 1974.

12 Scale Auto· APRIL 2012

All cars were owned by Penske and

were identically prepared and painteddifferent colors. The drivers switched

cars after each race to eliminate any

subtle differences in the cars.

Mark Donohue was series champion.

The RSR was only used for the firstIROC series; after that, Penske switched

to Camaros.

CONSTRUCTION The Revell kit

represents the street-going Carrera RS,but this is a good starting place for an

RSR - especially seeing the betterFujirni kit is out of production.

All of the external cues for the RSR

are there: the unique front air dam withcooling intakes; the whale-tail spoiler;

and the extra-wide flared fenders.

The only changes necessary aremaking the interior suitable for a race

car and w.idening the wheels and tires.

INTERIOR The seats will have to go.

The job is made easier by the fact that

the rear seat back is molded separately.

Leave this out and paint the panel

behind it. The lower seat cushion ismolded in, but can easily be covered

with some sheet styrene.

Leave out the front passenger seat

and add a racing seat from your spares

box for the driver. Leave out the rearseat back, which is molded separately.

Cover the lower seat cushion with

sheet styrene. Add a racing seat from

your spares box for the driver. Leave outthe front passenger's seat.

The kit comes with a single hoop roll

bar, which is a good start, but this will

need some bracing.Add two rear supports from styrene

rod from the top bar of the hoop to therear seat bulkhead. Add another bar

diagonally behind the driver's seat.

The door panels and the dashboardshould be modified to remove all of the

extra controls, but because the IROCcars had black interiors, just paint

everything black and don't paint any of

the details, and everything disappears.Add a fire extinguisher from your

spares box, put in a racing harness, andyou're done with the interior.

WHEELS AND TIRES The Fuchs-stylewheels in the kit are correct, but the rims

and tires are not wide enough.

In fact, the box art is misleading. It

dearly shows the deep-dish rear wheelsand wide tires that are prototypically

correct for the RS, but all four wheelsand tires are the same size: narrow front

tires. These wheels and tires might be

okay for front wheels for a street RS, butthey won't do for an RSR.

I widened the wheels on my model by

cutting off the kit rims, leaving only thefive-star Fuchs centers, and replacing

them with wide-and-wider rims from my

spares box.Find some deep-dish wheels that are

the correct width, and use a razor saw to

separate the rims from the centers. Glue

the wider rims to the Fuchs centers, andyou have wheels suitable for an RSR.

Although the European RSRs used

the Porsche center-lock hubs, the IROCRSRs had five-bolt lugs, as modeled in

the kit.Find some wide tires in your spares

box that match the new rims.Because Goodyear was one of

Penske's sponsors, you'll need to add

Goodyear logos to the tires. This can bedone with decals, dry-transfer lettering,

or by using Goodyear-embossed tires in

the first place.Depending on the rims and tires you

chose, you might have to adjust the kitsuspension a little to get the correct ride

height - which should be low.

WINDOWS The Revell side windows are

designed to fit into cutouts in the body,

T h e k it w h ee ls a n d t ire s a re to o n a rr ow fo r th e R SR.F in d s om e s uita blyw id e w h ee ls a nd tire s fro m y ou r s pa re s b ox. C u t o ut th e five -s ta r F uc h

which works okay except that the

windows are thick and distorted.I chose to only use the front and rear

windows, and replace the side windowswith clear plastic sheet. This means I

had to fill the gaps in the window

openings with sheet styrene and blend it

in prior to installing the side glass.

DETAILS A couple of other small

details need to be added:

There is no oil cooler radiator in the

rear wing. I cut a rectangular hole in thewing and filled in the hole with a small

piece of ribbed styrene.

You could also take a shortcut and

just paint a black rectangle in the top

and bottom of the wing. You can addone with a small rectangle of ribbed

styrene, or just paint a black rectangle in

the top and bottom of the wing.

You'll also need to add a second

exhaust tip and make an appropriate

cutout in the rear valence for it. Thestreet RS has a muffler with a single

exhaust pipe; the RSR has dual exhausts

without any muffler , of course. For my model's exhaust tips, I used

3/32" aluminum tubing. The second

exhaust pipe was made from bent wire.

The molded-in mesh in the cooling

intake in the front air dam is donelightly and it's easy to hide the detail

with too much paint. I used some fine

plastic mesh to cover the opening and

held it in place with a frame made from

styrene strip.

Sand the headlights smooth and painthem flat black to represent the covered

headlights used for racing.

FINISH The IROC RSRs were raced ill

a variety of colors: Bright Yellow,Grand Prix White, Gulf Blue, Pistachio

Green, Light Green, Bright Green,

Aubergine, Acid Blue, Mexican Blue,Indian Red, Orange, Sahara Beige,

Strawberry Pink, Carmen Red, and

Black.

Each of the drivers raced several carsduring the series, so you have a variety

of colors and numbers to choose from.

SpeedIine makes a complete decalsheet, so you can model any of the cars

with any of the drivers. I chose MarkDonohue's white #2 car.

I used Dupli-Color GM0338 \¥hite,

which is a match for Porsche's GrandPrix White.

The interior was painted acombination of semigloss and flat blackYou'll have to mask the window

surrounds and paint them black.

ONE OF THE MOST difficult a bstacles a model builder can

face is a kit that is molded in color - especially when acolor change is desired from the "suggested color" that

the kit is molded in!Many older NASCAR kits were plagued with the dreaded

"molded-in color" plastic, ranging from orange to red, and

yellow to blue. Despite proper priming techniques, the

colored plastic can still bleed through, ruining your paint job.Let's take a look at a tried-and-true method I use to stop

the bleeding.

Improve AMT's snap Car of Tomorrow kit with interior and chassis detailing

by JAY SAVARESE

AGOODFRIEND and mentor once told me the secret to

detailing: "It doesn't have to actually work, but it shouldlook like it does." I live by these words when modeling,

and applied this principle to upgrade the current NASCARCar of Tomorrow snap kit from AMT.

The kit is offered in several predecorated variations, and a

blank version that allows the builder to utilize aftermarket

decals. The extremely simplified chassis are identical in each

variation as well. This kit provides an excellent springboard into some easy

modifications to get a relatively detailed final product.

AMT has no current plans to add the missing details with aglue kit, so my main focus here will be upgrading the chassis

and interior to include the omitted roll bars and details.Using some relatively simple scratchbuilding techniques,

you can bring the interior up to par without breaking the

bank on expensive detailing goodies.

resin ene

InePreparation, cleanup, and test-fitting are keys to success

S A BUILDER who is always searching for ways to add moredetail to my models, I really enjoy looking to the

aftermarket for upgrades and enhancements. One of myfavorites is resin engine kits.

Whether it is a Pro Mod engine that's not available in any

kit, or a factory stock engine that offers a bit more detail, resinengines fill voids in many of my projects.

The steps for working with a resin engine differ a bit fromhow you would build up a normal kit styrene engine. They

take a bit more cleanup and test-fitting, but the results are

usually worth it. They will also require a bit different set oftools and supplies.

Several suppliers offer resin engine parts, and even fullengines. The most well-known and respected supplier is Ross

Gibson. Most full kits are $20-$30, depending on the subject.

I'll be building Ross's RG 104440 Magnum engine.Scale Dreams (www.scaledreams.com) carries the full line

of Gibson engines, and they can be found at local hobby

shops or on eBay.

I'll cover the basic of the parts cleanup and preparations, as

well as mixing in a bit of detailing and the addition of a few

kit parts. Let's get to work!

· H o w t o I · tl, a e r e a IS ..C c a r p eEmbossing powder is easy to apply and paint • by KEN HART

Fo. R MANY years, the most popular material for carpet hasbeen finely chopped rayon flocking. Itworks weJl enough

in most cases, but after I read about the great results some

modelers were achieving using a product called embossing

powder, I decided to give it a try.

I've been highly pleased with the results, and now considerit my "go-to" material for making carpet.

Embossing powder can be purchased at any store that sellsscrapbooking supplies. The techniques for applying it are

similar to to the ones used with flocking.

However, embossing powder is easier to use, covers moreevenly, and produces a texture that looks much more in scale

than what you get with flocking,

Best of all, embossing powder takes paint like a dream,

which means your models can have carpet that's perfectly

color-keyed every time. And because there's no need to buymultiple colors, embossing powder is cost-effective too.

I'll show you how to lay scale carpet in your next project

vehicle. I'll use a floor pan from an AMT/Ertl1962 Chevrolet

Bel Air kit. Its separate door panels allow a good view of the

carpeted area.

and has upgrade possibilities too • by EVAN HERMEL

EDITOR Jim Haught wrote me when

the Revell snap kit of the Peterbilt

352 cabover was released a few

months ago. He pitched the idea of mywriting a piece on this kit, along the

lines of "thinking it might be an enabler

or encourager for on-the-fence typeswho might take a shot at building a

truck model."

Fair enough. This 1132 scale kit is a

diamond in the rough, and is a good

way to break into the hobby It's also a

great change-of-pace when the urge todo something different comes along.

These types of kits are great slump

busters when you're taxed after

completing a heavily involved project.

24 Scale Auto· APRIL 2012

Here, I'm going to show you ten

different tricks to improve the looks of amodel without using anything fancy like

photoetch or resin parts. Heck, Ididn'teven use my airbrush or any extrastyrene for this project!

1MAKING TARPS You'll notice that

when you snap the rear quarterfenders onto the chassis, their tabs

project up unrealistically at the back of

the deck plate. Iut the tabs off andglued the fenders on, but what to do

about the unsightly holes'?

An easy solution was to cover themup with some tarps, Tarps can be made

from tissue wrapping paper (the kind for

wrapping dishes, not facial tissue).

I cut the tarps to the sizes I wanted, then wet them with some white glue

diluted with water. The tissues were thenrolled up, folded, and laid out on the

deck plate, attaching them with

superglue. When they were dry,Ipainted them with craft paint and

highlighted them with some

drybrushing. The bedspread in the bunk

was done up the same way.

2MAKE A HEADLINER FORTHE CAB INTERIOR All of thetabs for the marker lights and air

horns will be visible on the roof interior.

You can hide them by making a

headliner from 3x5 card stock. Simply

cut to the desired rectangular shape. I

brush-painted mine with Tamiya XF-52

Flat Earth, which is the same color Iused for the interior tub.

3REPLACING CHROME ORMETAL FINISHES Let's face it,

the kit chrome looks nice, butyou'll see it that bright only on toys and

show trucks. Most trucks use brushed or

polished aluminum for things such as

fuel tanks.I painted the parts gloss black, and

the next day, I replicated chrome finish

by using Rust-Oleum Specialty Metallic

Silver, which I found at Home Depot. I

didn't need to do this for the wheels;

they received a coat of Testor'sDullCote. Any matte finish will work for

transforming chrome into brushedaluminum.

4~~~O:FET~~~~~~~TEL.

DECAL.S I painted my truck withTestor's Colors by Boyd Black N Blue

Pearl. After I saw the finish, I felt that it

needed some jazzing up.

What was needed were some stripes.I used 1132scale "Class of the

Industry" or "Winslow Moore" stripes

from Model'Iruckin.corn. These were

first seen in the 1975 Peterbilt brochure

titled Class of the Industry and designed

by Peterbilt engineer Winslow Moore.Although the decals were

recommended as being for conventionalor cab over, in reality they're meant for a

conventional cab with sleeper, so I

trimmed the stripes to suit my eye. Theynestled down over the rivets and raised

portions perfectly, with decal settingsolution.

5SEALING SEAMS The fueltanks have some bright chrome

plating that looks somewhat

toylike, and the finish is marred by the

unrealistic seam that will be left when

the tank halves are put together.

Itripped the chrome (see below forhow to replace it) by soaking the parts

overnight in Castrol Super Clean, whichis simply a powerful alkaline detergent

solution.

The following day, using latex gloves

to handle the parts, Iinsed themthoroughly under running water and

allowed them to dry.

The tank halves were glued together,

and the seams filled using Tamiya putty.

Superglue-and-baking-soda is also anexcellent filler. After the putty dried, I

wet-sanded the seams smooth usingTestor's sanding films.

of the plastic, Iplated" the tanks, asmentioned. Be careful when attaching

the tanks to the chassis; the mountingtabs and pins are too large. Inded upsnipping off the tabs, and enlarging the

mounting holes in the tanks.

6FIXING THE FIFTH WHEEL Ih~ve~o idea why the kit engineersdId this, but on Revell

(ex-Monogram) 1 / 3 2 scale truck kits, the

kingpin is not on the trailer; instead, itsticks up out of the fifth wheel. This just

will not do. Iemoved the kingpin from

Part 20 in Step 2, and glued this to the

fifth wheel.

7

FIXING THE MUD FLAPS Thekit flaps were grossly overscale in

thickness, and had someprominent pin marks in them. Iut

them off and replaced them with plain

old copy paper cut to the same size. Use

black construction paper if you want to

mimic black rubber flaps. Iused the kit-supplied Peterbilt stickers, and I'm quite

pleased with the end result.

8SING A BLACK WASH A

common trick to add depth to

your model is to use a black

wash. Thin some flat black paint and

apply it the desired area. Iused The

BUILDING THE LEGENDS I MAURICE PETTY'S SHOP

This Maurice Petty tribute is a good way to get started • by MARK BATSON

WHEN I VISITED Petty's Garage in Level Cross, North

Carolina (formerly Petty Enterprises), I took special

interest in a building that was pointed out as MauricePetty's old engine shop.

It really got me to thinking about all of the hours and allthe Hemis Maurice wrenched on over the years that aided his

brother, Richard, to all those wins.

Inspired by this master engine builder, I started thinking

about a small diorama for my collection that would paytribute to another great Petty legend.

This was my first attempt at a diorama, as well as working

with figures; my goal was to at least catch the spirit of Hemi

by Maurice.

I chose to make this tribute diorama smaller than mostauto/garage dios for two reasons: I wanted to keep my main

subject from getting lost in a larger base, and I wanted to be

able to display it on my shelf with other Petty models.

M o n t e Ca r l 1 0How to build Dale

Earnhardt's "first win"

car from 1979

by DAVE THIBODEAU

I

OVE TO BUILD NASCAR subjects, whether they are old or

new. It seems that there are no complete kits these days to

replicate some of the late-1970s cars that are considered tobe some of the last race cars that resembled their street

counterparts. There have been a few reissued car kits from that era, but

there are also alternatives, including kitbashing, that can

produce good results.

A R ev ell 1 97 7 M o n te C a rlo s na p k it isth e b as is fo r th is m o de l.

Let's create Dale Earnhardt's 1979 "first win" car (at Bristol

Motor Speedway) by kitbashing the newly reissued Revell

"Wheels of Fire" 1977 Monte Carlo Snap kit (for the body)and an older Revell T-Bird NASCAR kit for the chassis,

engine, suspension, wheels, and tires.A 1987 Monogram Monte Carlo Aerocoupe will also

donate some of its parts to the project.

ONE OF the hottest trends in the

automotive world is the renewed

popularity of drag machines fromthe formative years of Funny Cars.

With the recent introduction ofRevell's newly-tooled Hawaiian and Chi-

Town Hustler kits, plus reissues from

Revell, AMTlRound 2, and Polar Lights,

model builders are well-positioned to

participate in this latest trend.I built a number of Funny Cars early

in my modeling career, and I must

confess that one thing grew tiresome: the

tedious and repetitive process of fullywiring the engine and chassis.

Yet with the prominent visual role of

engines when the Funny Car bodies are

lifted, I just couldn't settle for a simple

by TIM BOYD

black-and-chrome, straight from-the-boxengine assembly in my most recent

projects.What to do, then?

One solution lies in a two-step process.First is full paint-detailing of the engine;

second is to go one step farther and add

basic ignition wiring. With these two steps, you gain 75

percent of the visual impact of a fullywired and detailed Funny Car engine, with perhaps 1/3 the investment of time.

Of course, if you are building a full-on

contest entry, or if you really enjoy thefull-detail engine/chassis detailing

process, then have at it, with my

compliments and respect.

But if you are building for yourself or

your local club meets, or maybe opening

the box of your first Funny Car model,

you might want to try the techniquesshown here.

We'll cover the basics of paint-detailing funny car engines first. Thenwe'll go to the next level and show the

steps to add ignition wiring to a 426Hemi engine. Finally, we'll show

photography of several of the mostpopular funny car engines from the first

generation of those drag machines, built

using one or both of the above

techniques. It all begins with a trip to your local

hobby store, and finishes with a sharp

model for your display case.

Let's get started!

Revell 962 DodgeLancer GClassic Kits will be a recurringfeature.

We'll look at some of the best-known. and

some of the least-known-yet-significant

model car kits, starting with calendar year

1958 (the advent of modern 1125scale

model cars with one-piece bodies).

We'll show the box art, and insome

cases,photos of completed models. Key

information for the collector, including the

kit number and the current price for amint, unbuilt kit, willalso bepresented

The GT was the top-of-the-line

version, featuring the then-new industry

trend of individual front bucket seats.

The Lancer was replaced at the next

model year with a reskinned versionrenamed the Dodge Dart - ODeof the

most successful Dodge cars.Revell's Lancer GT kit was part of a

series featuring the 1962 Chrysler lineup:

a Plymouth Valiant four-door sedan andFury two-door hardtop; a Dodge 440

four door hardtop; a Chrysler Newportconvertible; and an Imperial Crown

four-door hardtop. Box art featured

imagery taken straight from Chrysler'scar catalogs.

Each kit had a rudimentary

functioning Chrysler Torsion-Aire front

suspension, designed to offer a stock

dropped-front ride heights. Optionalparts included louvers, side pipes,

spotlights, and custom wheel covers.

Also included were a multipieceengine assembly, full interior, and a one-

piece chassis casting, Although not

advertised as such, the Lancer GT kit

included optional engine accessories to

duplicate the rare Hyper-Pak over-the-counter engine upgrade.Revell's first (and last, until they

joined with Monogram during the late

1980s) annual kit series was not a

commercial success, Each mode.1was

reissued only once, in late 1962, in atinted clear metalflake styrene (the

Dodge 440 body only was included in

Revell's Revellion pseudo-Funny Car kit

released five years later),

Rumors persist that Revell still hasmost of the tooling that would be

required to reintroduce this kit series.

When Jim Haught recently suggested

the idea for this feature, I pondered

which kit would be appropriate to kickoff this series. I quickly listed more than

20 contenders, but in the end, I decidedto feature the first model car kit that I

recall assembling.

The Dodge Lancer was introduced in1961 as what we now call a "badge

engineered" spinoff of the 1960Chrysler

Valiant. It continued for 1962 with a new

grille and taillamps, powered by a 170 or

225-cubic-inch Slant Six.

M onogram 1932 Fo rd 3 -window coupe

• , FIFTEENYEARSafter the debut of itslandmark 1932 Ford 3-Window Coupe

street rod, Revell has reissued the kit aspart of its "Monogram Classic Cruiser"

line of budget-priced kits.

The plastic parts in this new issue areunchanged from previous ones. The only

revisions are to the decals, instructions,

and box art. In addition to two graphics

schemes - white scallops and orange-

and-yellow f1ames- the new decal sheetindudes gauge faces in black and white;

white Von Dutch-style pinstripes for the

trunk lid and grille shell; small Maltesecrosses in black and white; and white

whitewalls for the tires.I tried to consider whether the kit is

suitable for less-experienced modelers-

the target market for the Classic Cruiser

series. The answer: A qualified yes.

Assembly is fairly straightforward, and any hobbyist with a couple of kits

under their belt should be able to get the

model together. However, there are some

tricky steps that take this kit out of the

realm of being a good candidate foranyone's first glue kit.

50 Scale Auto· APRIL 2012

Installing the well-done small-block

Ford engine in the frame is one suchstep. The engine won't fit with the "K"member (which supports the

transmission) in place - the builder mustglue the engine to its mounts, and flip

the chassis over and attach the "K"

member before the glue sets. The use of

a slow-setting super glue and accelerator

helped a lot here. The sample kit had heavy mold-

parting lines on the body, mainly on the

aft sides of the rear roof pillars. The two

small portions of those that went over araised body character line between the

roof and tulip panel were particularly

difficult to remove.

I built my Deuce as a full-fendered

rod. I painted the fenders separately

from the frame, to make it easier tomask and spray the running boards with

Tamiya TS-29 Semi-Gloss Black.

The lower splash panel is also difficult

to install after painting, because of tight

clearance. Less-experienced modelersmight find it easier to glue these parts to

the frame and paint it as a unit.

Molded Colors: White, clear

Scale: 1/25

MSRP: $16.95Pros: New decal sheet; separate

fenders for "highboy" version .Cons: Mold-parting l ines on body;

some tricky assembly steps/small

parts may frustrate beginners

I detailed the kit's five-spoke Torq

Thrust mag wheels by brush-paintingthe centers with Tester's Flat Gray

enamel and picking out the lug nutswith a fine-point silver Sharpie marker.

I wanted to use the whitewall decals

on the tires, but I could not get them to

lay flat, even with copious amounts of

setting solution. I painted whitewalls onthe tires instead, using a circle template

and Model Master White Lacquer

Primer. I chose Tester's One Coat

Lacquer Mystic Emerald as the main

color for my model.I'm quite happy with the way my

3-window turned out, and would

recommend it to anyone who likes street

rods. Experienced mode.lers can have afield day kitbashing with Revell's other

vast array of aftermarket parts availablefor it. - Ken Hart

A o s h im a L o n d o n B l a c k C a b

.: THE "BLACK CAB" is a true icon the

UK; the basic design has not changed in

7 0 years! This model represents a 1948-

1959Austin FX4.Assembly of the classic Austin cab

begins with the one-piece chassis. This

kit was motorized at one time, as there isa box for a AA battery, and a hole for

an on/off switch. The front spindles

have great engraved detail on the backsides, and there are drum brakes.

Because of the model's motorizednature, the interior does disappoint, but

it can be built to 10Dk good. The interior

f100r has the driver's seat, rear benchseat and parking brake molded

integrally. Painting the seats in a

contrasting color to the f100r reallyhelps bring the interior to life.

The dashboard is well done, and threegauge decals are included. Installation

of the steering column and wheel,

shifter, two-piece front seat back, and

chrome-plated rearview mirror finishes

the interior. The body is well done, and is molded

as one piece. Side marker lights need to

be covered with foil, then painted clear

orange; window trim, door handles, and

rear body emblems need to be chrome

foiled.

The windows install from the insideof the body, and I found the one-piece

side windows tricky to set in place.

The only engine detail present is of

the cam cover, intake system, and

exhaust manifold, which are molded to'a bucket designed to represent the

engine bay. Molded details such as

wires, batteries, and plumbing are also

present. The only separate parts of the

engine bay are three fluid bottle caps, the radiator, a two-piece overflow tank,

and a retractable hood support.

I found the hood hinges too finicky to

use. The hinges are to be trapped by theinterior bucket and the engine bay

bucket. Unfortunately, the tolerances

are too dose for the hood to open and

close freely, so I left off the separate

hinges. The retractable hood supportdoesn't work too well.

The wheel fronts install via a metal

pin from the outside, which is secured in

place by the spindles. The rears installvia a solid metal axle. A small chrome-

Sc a l e : 1/24

M S R P : $49.99

P r o s : Classic design

C o n s : Original kit design for

motor/lights detracts from this

version; finicky hood hinges

plated dog-dish hubcap is included foreach wheel, and these parts trap the

metal pins in the front wheels.

The tires are too new for a 1950 s taxi.

They are Bridgestone dueler tires, whichlook to be suitable for a modern-day

pickup truck.

Final assembly is a breeze. The TAXIroof sign, windshield wipers, fender-

mounted mirrors, grille, turn signals, bumper and license plate are separate

parts for the front half of the taxi. The

headlights are two-piece units for eachside, and they also help reveal the

model's past; apparently the kit oncehad working lights. The chrome

headlight buckets have deep holes

molded in for small light bulbs. Whenthe model is completed, the holes create

a strange "google-eye" effect.

This is a refreshing change of pace.

The final result is excellent, and I

recommend this model kit to anyinewho's looking for something different.

.1 THIS KIT is molded in orange and

black plastic. There is a tree of chrome-

plated parts, as well as rubber tires andsome vinyl tubing.

Parts quality is good. Mold lines are

minimal, and there was no flash on myexample. There were sink marks on the

cover for the left side of the bike. The chrome was shiny, but the

coverage was uneven on the "back" side

of the tree. Orange plastic can be seen

through the plating in some spots.

The engine is made up of five pieces.Three of these are chromed, and should

not be. The rear suspension is mostlymolded together, with the coil-over

shocks being separate parts. Careful

detail-painting of the chain andsprocket is needed to bring it to life.

The multipiece front suspension waseasy to build, yet took a lot of patience

to get right.

The front and rear luggage racks arenice, but their assembly was tricky.

.: THE NISSAN (or Datsun, when it was

introduced) 240Z revolutionized the

sports-car market during the early

1970s. It looked great, was affordable, and was highly competitive on the track.

Hasegawa has released its thirdversion of Nissan's venerable Z car as

the police version given to Kanagawa

Highway Patrol. It is a curbside kit

consisting of 109 pieces. It's basically their stock ZG kit with

an extra pair of parts trees and different

decals for the patrol car. A beautiful set

of metal transfers is also included for all

the emblems and mirror faces.Assembly starts with the interior.

The interior floor is the top side of the

chassis pan, and has quite a few ejector-pin marks. Most will get covered, but a

few in the footwells will be visible. The side panels are separate pieces

and have decent relief detail andseparate arm rests. Other parts include

foot pedals, center console, shift lever,

hand brake lever, and seats. The dash is the only area that

differentiates the police version from

stock, with the glove-compartment lid

being replaced by an in-dash radar unit

and what appears to be a small radiohandset. Decals are provided for the

instruments, radar unit, and horn

button. They are thin, so use caution.

The underside of the chassis has good

detail, and only the lower bits of theengine need to be picked out with semi-

gloss black paint. Individual parts

handle all other chassis details. The independent rear suspension is

well reproduced by six components withseparate springs/struts; drum brakes,

lower control arms and differential/drive

shaft/half-shafts. Molded detail is crisp

on all parts, and the fit is good.

The front suspension is built up fromseven components, and features

poseable steering. The mounting holes

at the top of the front wheel wells for

the struts seems a little too big, so thesteering is a little sloppy.A separate transmission and cross

member connect the engine to the rest

of the drive train. Two more pieces are

used for the main parts of the exhaust

and a chrome-plated tip to finish it off.Last is the engine skid plate to complete

the underside detail.

Most of the body shell is molded inone piece, with the nose being separate

to allow for the different standard andG versions. Molding is clean, and

Hasegawa appears to have captured the

Molded Colors: White, black, clear

Scale: 1/24

MSRP: $49.99

Pros: Good chassis detail; good

metal transfers; enjoyable build

Cons: Steering a bit sloppy; wheel

flares unnecessary with skinny

stock tires

lines of the 240Z perfectly. Panel lines

are crisp, and only minor cleanup isnecessary. Fit of the nose is good, but I

had to drill out the bumper mounting

holes slightly. The windshield and sidewindows are molded in one piece and

have good clarity.

Aside from the different nose

treatment, the G version also hadtack-on wheel flares. The kit parts fit

well, but look a little unnecessary with

the skinny stock tires.

Taillights and side markers/turn

signals are clear, so they will need to bepainted with your favorite red and

orange tints. The police lights will alsoneed the same treatment. The metal transfer emblems worked

perfectly and look spectacular. Thereare decals for backup just in case.

The police markings are minimal andwent on without issue, although they do

have a slightly dull finish. I deviated

from the instructed paint scheme slightlyto make masking easier.

I'm pleased with the results. I enjoyed

the build every step of the way, and it

will certainly be a unique item in my

collection. - Mike Klessig

The body is molded crisply, with deeppanel lines, The proportions are also

nicely done. There are a few mold seams

on the nose and rear end that will need a

bit of extra attention.

The rear engine cover on the reviewkit was warped severely. I heated the

part to bring it back into shape, but

ultimately decided to glue it down for abetter curbside look to the build.

The engine assembly looks great whenbuilt up, but the chrome plating needs to

be stripped off prior to assembly!

painting. The engine is supposed to be

aluminum on these cars, and the chromelooks toylike. Check references when

you're painting, for accuracy. The interior is also nicely molded,

with a decent amount of detail. Most ofit will not be seen after final assembly

takes place, however. There are decals

for the instrument cluster and centerstack controls that add a nice touch.

The front and rear suspensions go

together pretty well, and look decent.

Take extra care on step 2, part 13: the

instructions have the part being glued tothe wrong pins on the chassis. You'll

need to move the part to the two pins

directly behind the ones shown in the

illustration.Final assembly is where extra care

and time will be needed. The rear clip

that surrounds the engine is especially

difficult to install. Make sure the rear

shocks go down in between the upper

control arms, or the rear of the bodywill not fit flush over the chassis.

Take care when installing the glass

assembly: the fit is extremely tight. I

cracked the right quarter glass pressing

the unit into final position!

The overall look of the completedmodel is decent. The ride height is a

little high, but passable. Simple, small

adjustments can easily be made here if

one so desires.

I recommend this kit for experiencedmodelers who can think outside the boxa little bit to achieve a more-realistic

look. - Jay Savarese

detailed with a skull theme,

and the side pipes came from

an AMT 1960 Ford Starliner kit.

She used Dupll-Color silver for

the basecoat, applied the black
