Choosing Your Size

Measure your child’s waist and choose the corresponding size from the size chart. If your child is in

between sizes or you prefer a roomier fit go up one size. Check the finished length against shorts that

fit your child well and adjust as needed.

Cutting Out Your Pieces

Cut out your pieces using the pattern provided at the end of the tutorial. Patterns should be printed

at 100% scale. Tape your pattern pieces together along the dashed lines. Lay out all of your pattern

pieces before you begin cutting to ensure the most efficient use of your fabric.

You will also need to cut the waistband, scallop facing and elastic using the chart below:

Sewing Guidelines

Use a 1/2" seam allowance unless otherwise noted.

Make sure you pre-wash and dry your fabric.

Finish all exposed seams with a serger, zig-zag stitch or pinking shears to prevent fraying.

Piping Tips & Tricks:

When applying piping it should always be on the right

side of the fabric with the raw edge flush with the raw

edge of the fabric. Sew in place as close as possible to the

piping. You may find it easiest to use your zipper foot. To

cut down on bulk in your seam allowance un-pick the last

1/2" of the piping casing and snip off the cording portion

of the piping.

Assembly

1. Optional Baste a length of piping to the curved pocket opening on the left and right front piece. *Tip: If your fabric looks the same on both sides make sure you have a left and a right leg after this step. *Note: Your shorts will have 1 less scallop in front and back than shown in the tutorial.

2. With right sides together (RST) sew the pocket lining piece to the corresponding front shorts piece along the pocket opening. Trim and clip the seam allowance.

3. Flip the pocket over to the inside of the shorts and press flat. Topstitch along the pocket opening.

4. With RST sew the pocket piece to the pocket lining along the outer curved edge. You will need to move the front shorts piece out of the way as you sew.

5. Baste the pocket to the front shorts piece along the side seam and upper edge.

6. With RST sew one front piece to the corresponding back piece along the side seam. Repeat for the other leg.

7. Finish the top edge of your scallop facing with a serger or by folding over 1/4" towards the wrong side and pressing flat. With RST lay your shorts piece on top of the facing with the bottom of the scallops 1/4" above the bottom edge of the facing. Sew together along the bottom edge of the shorts using a 1/4" seam allowance. Tips for perfect scallops:

- Draw your stitching line on the fabric - Reduce your stitch length - Stop in-between each scallop with your needle down, lift your presser foot and then pivot your

fabric and continue to the next scallop

8. Trim away the excess facing fabric. Clip the seam allowance in-between each scallop and notch the seam allowance along each scallop.

9. Flip the facing over to the wrong side of the shorts and press flat. Use a point turner, crochet hook, etc. to make sure each scallop is fully turned. Topstitch in place along the bottom edge of the shorts.

10. Apply hem tape or double sided fusible interfacing to the wrong side of the facing, securing it to the wrong side of the shorts.

11. With RST sew the front and back of the shorts together along the inseam for the left leg and then repeat with the right leg. *Tip: To help the shorts lay well finish each side of the seam allowance separately so it can be pressed open and then tack in place.

12. Slide one leg of the shorts inside the other with RST. Make sure your seams from step 11 are aligned and then sew the shorts together along the crotch seam.

13. Add a 1" strip of interfacing to the wrong side of the waistband 1/2" up from one long edge. With RST sew the 2 short ends of the waistband together.

14. With RST slide the waistband over the top edge of the shorts. Align the waistband seam with the center back seam of the shorts and sew together.

15. Flip the waistband and seam allowance from step 14 up and press flat. Fold the raw edge of the waistband over 1/2" towards the wrong side of the fabric and press flat. Bring the folded edge downwards so the waistband is double thickness and the seam allowance is fully enclosed. Topstitch in along the back of the waistband.

16. Slide your elastic through the back half of the waistband with a safety pin. Try the shorts on for fit and adjust the elastic for a perfect fit. Secure the elastic at the side seams.

17. Topstich the front portion of the waistband in place.
