ScanNav GPS assisted Navigation and

Cartographic software

Foreword:

ScanNav is a navigation software: it has been present exclusively on the web (http://www.scannav.com) for several years without any kind of advertising. ScanNav now counts several hundreds of users, all satisfied, thanks to its affordable price, incomparable support, and frequent updates giving access to new functionalities (please refer to users forum at http://fr.groups.yahoo.com/group/scannav). The ScanNav stand at the last Paris Boat Show was a real success and convinced a big number of visitors ScanNav has recently obtained the IHO approval for the Official ENCs support, and is now a distributor from Primar. Official ENCs (Electronic Navigation Charts) are the charts issued directly from the Hydrographic offices of the countries member of the IHO (International Hydrographic Office, (SHOM for France)). They are the only vector charts authorized in replacement of paper charts on Commercial and Military ships, according to the SOLAS convention. ScanNav was initially developed for personal purposes by a boater who was also a professional software engineer. It does not only offer all functionalities provided by other better known softwares, but also provides extra unique functionalities, such as the integrated advanced chart workshop enabling the correction of commercial charts and the creation of your own. ScanNav (integrated documentation included) is available in English and French versions. A trial version can be downloaded free on http://www.scannav.com in order to help you in your choice before purchase. It runs on Windows (starting from 95 and upper versions), and small hardware configuration (from Pentium I). A few users also use it on Macintosh providing a Windows emulator such as « Virtual PC »

Main functionalities

Supported Charts: ScanNav supports today both Vector and Raster charts

• Raster charts are issued from paper chart scans, and can be both commercial (BSB, Maptech, Softcharts…) or home made, by using the charts workshop.

• ScanNav also supports Vector S57 charts, especially the S63 crypted Official ENCs defined by the IHO. ScanNav is a distributor of Primar-Stavanger who centralises ENCs from the different countries. More information can be found on the SHOM web site: http://www.shom.fr/fr_page/fr_act_cartographie/index_act_carto_f.htm

• Charts are managed in « Seamless » mode: All available charts are loaded in the charts library once for all. ScanNav then automatically loads the necessary charts on screen according to the geographic area displayed and zoom level. Contrarily to other software that only enable a chart per chart display, ScanNav loads as many charts as necessary to cover the entire screen. They are then adjusted together whatever their scale so as to insure a continuity of display. You will therefore never encounter the too frequent problem -when navigating- of a partial white screen on chart borders. It is nevertheless possible to disable this automatic feature if you wish to display charts at a different zoom level.

• In addition to marine charts (whether raster or vector), ScanNav also supports aerial

or satellite photographs in MrSid format (already georeferenced and ready for use). This provides additional assistance in navigation, with a different view of the area.

The French “Equipment” Department provides on its site (http://siglittoral.test.application.equipement.gouv.fr/) free of charge MrSid aerial photographs at a resolution of 50 cm. To date all French Atlantic and Channel Coasts are covered. Coverage of the Mediterranean coasts is presently under study. NASA, provides a world wide satellite coverage at a resolution of 15 meters (https://zulu.ssc.nasa.gov/mrsid/).

• ScanNav is also adapted to terrestrial usage as it supports UTM or Lambert projections traditionally used in this domain.

Charts workshop It enables to create your own charts by using a single desktop scanner, and to correct existing charts. All necessary tools are available for the patching up of scans into a whole chart, and its referencing with an unlimited number of points taking into account all technical parameters such as projection or datum. It is however not necessary to rebuild the whole chart: one can decide to split the original paper chart into smaller charts: they will automatically be put back together at navigation time, thanks to the seamless mode. Another advantage provided by the workshop is the possibility to scan detailed chartlets present on most navigation guides, in order to integrate them at a smaller scale to an existing chart library. This last operation only takes a few minutes. The workshop also enables the updating of existing charts (whether commercial or home made) by adding/modifying graphical information, or correcting geo-referencing of erroneous charts. This is implemented using a « patch » mechanism that can be disabled any time to come back to the original.

Navigation Planning Once the charts library is created, navigation is carried out in a very intuitive manner. All displacements or in/out zooms on charts are achieved with a single click of the mouse wheel, or through the keyboard. Some specific features such as chart thumbnails can also display instantly a specific location at a given scale.

A set of tools allow the display of « objects » overlapping charts. These are waypoints, routes, tracks, etc… They can be classified and viewed on screen, or analyzed in a text specific window. They can be modified, but also protected to avoid any mishandling. All these tools can be configured into different toolbars according to user preferences.

Waypoints: A single click on the chart creates a new waypoint with default attributes. You may then specify different attributes (name, icon, description, class, association with a photograph, a video or any other interactive link, sound/visual alarms, etc…) All these attributes will display on screen when maintaining the mouse over the waypoint. A base of 900 waypoints associated with aerial oblique views of French ports is available (low resolution thumbnails issued by SHOM)

Routes: A specific tool enables to draw routes directly on the map, or using existing waypoints. A window then provides the routing information (heading to waypoints, distances, etc…)

Danger areas: Polygonal or circular areas may be drawn directly on the map to signal a dangerous zone, a

fishing or diving area etc… These areas can be associated with alarms when approaching or entering them. Anchorage areas: Contrarily to danger zones, an alarm is operated when leaving the area. Anchorage areas can be created automatically around the boat position, or defined manually as for danger areas. Notes: With this tool textual notes can be reported onto the chart. Transferring to/from the GPS: A single click will transfer created waypoints and routes to your GPS for a standalone mode: This may prove quite useful in the case of a low battery, and whenever the display of charts on screen is not strictly essential. Identically, the navigation track can be retrieved from the GPS for analysis and display on screen.

Real time navigation When navigating, all GPS or other connected instruments are memorized. The boat and its track are displayed on the map, and windows provide all the information useful for navigation (heading correction, wind indicator, sound, ground or surface heading/speed, VMG/ETA/ETE, etc…). All displays can be customized and resized at will. You may show any of them in full screen with a double-click, e.g. to survey heading correction or sound from the cockpit… Alarms will sound when approaching a target waypoint, a danger area, or going off track.

ScanNav can also send all information to external NMEA displays and control the auto-pilot. - Heading line: A line drawn at the head of the boat according to direction, will give indications on forthcoming positions. This line can be graduated in distance or in time periods (customizable). It allows immediate reading of the time left before the next tack or other action. - Man Over Board: by hitting the « enter » key or clicking a button, you can create an instant waypoint at the boat’s current position, (with all navigation data - time, speed, heading, wind, etc…- saved in the waypoint) thus helping to navigate back to the point. This

functionality is also very useful to mark fishing spots, or any other journal events. - Night vision: a wide range of screen brightness options is available; several options are predefined but also customizable by colour component.

Post Analyse / Graphic journal All information logged in the track during navigation can be analysed in details.

• The track results in a user-friendly Graphic journal: by positioning the mouse over it, the corresponding information shows up in a “pop-up” window (date, speed, heading, wind, sound, etc…)

• Tracks can be referred to in an analytic window in the form of a textual list. This list can be printed or exported to Excel or any other software for further formatting. One may perform, if necessary, a simplification of the track beforehand towards a synthetic printout (once per hour for example)

• A specific tool providing segment analysis of tracks will define averages in given periods, etc… This feature, for example, is very useful in the analysis of errors and performances after a race.

GRIB weather forecast module ScanNav enables the weather forecasts to be displayed directly on top of the map. GRIB files have been designed to take up very little space (50/200 Kb), and can be downloaded from Internet either using a simple cell phone during coastal navigation, or using satellite or bi-directional BLU when in deep-sea navigation. Data taken in account are: atmospheric pressure, wind, temperature, precipitations, swell (height, direction, frequency), and are provided from 24h to 7 days according to providers.

Different forecast dates can be chosen individually, and a date to date procedure can be carried out very easily. Various information is displayed on screen using standard symbols. The information to display can be selected and it is possible to customize any parameter such as colours, curves interval, transparency, etc… Download of Grib files are done directly in ScanNav using an appropriate user friendly interface, and optimizing the band width necessary to download so as to reduce the

communication costs. A list of Grib providers is preconfigured, and the user is free to add its own favourites. Several web sites offer free small scale GRIB forecasts, which give you a very good overview of global weather forecasts. For more detailed forecasts, some providers offer paying services (Météo France, Météorem, Meteo Consult …) ScanNav has a contract with METEOREM offering high resolution GRIB forecasts at a very

reasonable price. To date, the resolution is of 8nm for the French coast, and 15nm for the rest of Europe. Available data are the Wind, pressure, swell, air temperature and precipitations. Recent archives are available for free so as to test the service and compare with other providers. The 2 screen-shots below show the same geographic coverage and period (previsions of October 6th for October 7th 2005 at 7PM) for the Meteorem high resolution gribs (on the left) and the Noaa low resolution gribs (on the left), both using the same display settings (wind as feathers and transparency, pressure as curves)

Tidal Currents module ScanNav has a contract with the SHOM to work on their currents data. Vectors of currents are displayed on top of the map according to the tides time and coefficients, using different sizes and colours according to the strength and direction. By placing the mouse cursor at a given position, the estimated direction and speed show up in a text window. Values can be displayed for the current time or any other time, and it is very easy to scroll by time periods to have a view of the evolution of currents. Todate, the available areas are limited to the SHOM coverage (French coasts). Other areas will be available later, according to contracts with other countries IHOs. Heights of tides are also available with a world-wide coverage through the external WXTide program which is synchronized with ScanNav. A single click on the map lets you open WXTide at the nearest reference station location.

AIS module AIS (Auto Identification System) is an anti-collision system letting you know at any time the position and other navigation information of all ships equipped of a transponder cruising at a distance of up to about 20nm. This equipment is obligatory for all ships above 300Tx. Providing a simple AIS receiver, ScanNav will dynamically show on the map the position and heading of ships as well as other information such as the vessels name, destination, ETA, etc…, and will calculate potential collision routes, bringing therefore additional security to navigation. Visual and/or audible can be programmed to bring you attention in case of collision risk with another ship.. The AIS module is a new optional module of version 6.0.
