Overall Trends in Wireless
• Consumer focus dominates• Consumer mobile experiences shape enterprise user
expectations- enterprise will still require security, management, and support
• Devices Rule: Popular devices now available from most national providers
• With 4G, wireless networks rival wired in reliability and capacity
• Spectrum demand still outstripping supply- Wi-Fi opportunity!
• Battery Challenges Persist- you can’t do business with a dead battery

Enterprise Mobility Benefits
• Accessibility: Reach critical people at critical times• Productivity: Work more effectively out of the office• Information Access: Immediate access to information to
make decisions and respond to customers The Result
1. Business Responsiveness: Efficient, effective, productive2. Business Transformation: Access to information is one of the
few ways a company can differentiate itself today• The right information• In the right hands• At the right time• For competitive advantage

FMC and Mobile UC• Virtually all IP PBX and UC vendors offer mobile UC solutions
“Call forwarding” (or equivalent) is still the predominant form of FMC
• Mobile UC should be a success:– We still need a “business telephone system”
– Users divide their time between work and mobile
– UC provides better communication tools for enterprise mobile users
– Integrated with the wired network
– Dual mode (Wi-Fi/Cellular) versions can easily pay for themselves

Why Not Mobile UC?
• Mobility is a major topic in UC; “UC” is not even a topic in mobility
• Cellular buyers operate independently of IT and with their own set of issues
• Mobile UC clients provide a “disintegrated” user experience with a different feature set on each platform- not “integrated” like consumer apps !
• Many UC capabilities already exist in smartphones
• Lack of faith in voice over WLAN option- biggest TCO impact
• Buyers don’t see the value

How Mobile UC Changes with BYOD
• End user in now in control of the decision; vendors should be tracking “usage”, not “downloads”!
• Vendors have to produce products that entice users, are updated regularly, and provide long term value
• It’s time to think about what users want, not what engineering can make
• IT has a stake in this success as BYOD can become BYOA (“Application”)
• Internal app stores can promote Mobile UC
27

ScanSource Communications Confidential
Original Problem
• Mobility is a separate area inside of IT
• Sometimes it’s not in IT at all (“Purchasing Function”)!
• Not integrated with either the PBX or WLAN teams
• Numerous pressing issues
– BYOD – Mobile Security
– Mobile Device Mgmt – Apps: Enterprise, B2C, …
• Getting advice from cellular sales reps
28
www.dbrnassociates.com | © 2011, dBrn Associates, Inc.
ScanSource Communications ConfidentialScanSource, Inc. Confidential
• Cell phones were initially a purchasing function
• BlackBerry mobile email involved IT, but primarily in an operations role (i.e. running the BES)
• Post iPhone, mobile apps became a factor, but development often outsourced by marketing rather than IT
• BYOD is now making mobility an “issue” in IT• Uninformed Approach- Get ‘em on email and bye-bye
• Intelligent Approach: Mobile security, management, and support are key IT responsibilities regardless of who owns the device
Changing Mobility Buyer

ScanSource Communications ConfidentialScanSource, Inc. Confidential
• Get up-to-speed on the issues in the mobility market
• Understand the buying structure including decision makers and influencers
• Take advantage of the growing IT role in mobility
• Stress the “value”- make people more efficient, accessible and empowered with mobility
• Demonstrate the savings (Sell Wi-Fi voice!)
• Identify the user groups with biggest potential impact
• Help them get it done- start small and expand

Wi-Fi Wireless LAN
• Wi-Fi Alliance has done a great job at ensuring inter-operability and supporting adoption of the standards
• The 802.11n refresh continues, but details matter!o Transmit chains are a capacity multipliero A 40 MHz channel has twice the capacity but you have half
as many of them- do your devices support them?
• Chipsets for 802.11ac just reaching the market• Look closely at device capabilities
o 802.11n in 2.4 GHz is NOT an enterprise product!o 802.11n voice devices are 1-chaino Consumer devices often too “sticky” for enterprise voice
• Don’t forget network management

Major Issues in WLAN Voice
• Dense, pervasive coverage and a WLAN configured for voice• Coverage:
– Data: One AP for 5000ft2
– Voice: One AP for 3000ft2 (Maybe)
• Architecture: Separate or shared WLAN for voice and data?• Frequency band: 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz?• Quality of Service: 802.11e/Wi-Fi Multi-Media (WMM)• Call admission control/load balancing• Security: WPA2 preferred• Handoffs: 802.11r or WLAN switch proprietary. “Sticky” Wi-Fi drivers
can be a major problem• Battery life: Automatic power-save delivery (APSD)• Troubleshooting, network management, capacity planning
requirements

DECT Technology
Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications (ETSI)
• Radio interface specifications:o Transmission rate/carrier: 1.152 Mbps, time division
duplex (TDD)
o Radio carriers: US: 5 carriers (1.92 G to1.93 GHz)Europe: 10 carriers (1.88 G to 1.99 GHz)
Does not interfere with 2.4 G or 5 GHz Wi-Fi bands!
o Call capacity: 12-calls per carrier, TDM-based system (No QoS issues)
o Voice coding: 32 Kbps ADPCM
33

DECT Technology
– Signaling: Based on Q.931 (i.e. ISDN)
– Encryption: DECT Standard Cipher Algorithm (DSCA)
– Handoff capability: Yes
– Cellular/DECT Handoff: Not available
– Range: Fewer base stations required than with Wi-Fi
– Battery Life: Superior to Wi-Fi
– Data capability: Minimal

DECT CAT-iq
• Cordless Advanced Technology- Internet and Qualityo DECT standard for enhanced voice quality and IP Interface
• Radio interface specifications:o Same as traditional DECT
o Can now use a dual timeslot to support G.722 wideband voice (64 Kbps)
o Data service at rates up to 384 Kbps
o Compatible with existing DECT installations but 64 K voice calls take the capacity of 2- 32 K voice calls

Wrap-up
36

ScanSource Communications Confidential
Wrap-up
• The enterprise mobility opportunity is largely untapped
• Mobility management is shifting from purchasing to IT- an audience you understand better than the cellular reps do
• Rising cost and limited bandwidth will be driving mobility buyers to explore better options- Wi-Fi is high on the list
• “PBX” will still be there- need to define how tablets, smartphones, and Wi-Fi (or DECT) devices fit together
• Crafting a winning sales approach will require that you are talking about things that resonate with the buyer (BYOD, mobile security, applications development and management, etc.)
