Summer for our clan is all about Parade and our yearly journey to that year’s location. Hopefully, you will enjoy our story later in this issue. Traverse City, MI truly delivered with first class accommodation, magnificent grounds, friendly locals and breath taking Lake Michigan scenery. Next year’s Parade is in Monterey, CA which is always spectacular. I cannot even imagine how fantastic this Parade will be! We are already plotting our course and identifying hot spots to visit along the way. I know it is a long way to travel, but I promise, if you make the journey, you will be rewarded with a life time of unforgettable memories!

In the coming months we have a plethora of great events planned. Socially, we have our monthly kaffees, some of them with a unique flavor. Our annual Oktoberfest Concours, BBQ and Swap Meet at F Burton Smith Park in Cocoa has grown every year, and always receives positive praise from the attendees. This year we will present the third annual winner of the Kirk Stowers trophy to the best 356 in the show. We have several unique drives including the Elliott Museum in Stuart, the Polo Grill in Sarasota and we are planning a Guns and Porsche drive to the Knight Armory in Titusville, culminating with a stop at the Police Museum shooting range down the street. It may not be for everyone, but variety is what we strive to provide. We also have a couple HSR races coming up in Daytona and Sebring. The Daytona event will include a celebration of the 50 year anniversary of the 911. Several of us are planning to attend Escape in LA. This will be a great opportunity for us to soak up knowledge as we prepare to host the event next year. There are numerous Driver Education events at the numerous tracks around the state and at Roebling in southern Georgia. And finally, the autocross season will pick back up, including our annual Ladies Day and Autocross Challenge with Citrus Region. We need all drivers on deck, because I have no intentions of letting that beautiful trophy leave our hands!

If you are new to the club, you are welcome at any and all events. But pick at least one, circle it on the calendar and come meet some great people who share a common passion!

As always, check out our web site calendar for the latest event planning and check out our facebook page for even more club information!

By now you know the routine, whatever you do, get out and drive those cars!!

From the EditorThe temperatures are staring to cool off and the calendar is filling with upcoming Space Coast PCA events. Taking over being the editor of EV has been a massive undertaking for me, but I think I may be figuring it out now. A HUGE “Thank you!” needs to be said to my husband who is my resident Porsche consultant and Harry Allen who puts all the pieces together and produces such a beautiful end product. Thanks to everyone who has written an article or snapped a picture for the magazine. I love reading the articles members send in and admire the photos of the beautiful cars and people in our club. Please keep them coming! According to Brian’s Membership Report, we have over 800 people connected to our club – I look forward to seeing the “regulars” at our upcoming events and I hope to see some new faces too! Come join us and experience the friendliest Porsche Club in the world!

Escape to L.A.The fall is a great time to visit southern California; the weather can’t get any better for driving your Porsche. If you so desire, it is possible to drive from mountains with over eight thousand feet of elevation to sandy beaches all in the same day! The deserts are beautiful, crisp comfortable days, and bright clear blue skies. This is the perfect time of the year for our apple orchards. The apples are rippening on the trees and are sweet and juicy. Great fun to go picking your favorite variety. Take a drive along the southern California beaches, and, of course, mulholland Drive.

We have wonderful tours planned for you in addition to the mountain and beach driving. We are offering several museum tours, Nethercutt, Huntington library, mullin, plus architectural tours will be part of this years escape.

Registration opens July 15 so don’t miss out. visit our web site http://escape2013.pca.orgRobin Hoffman

It’s interesting that of our 521 primary members, 261 list a 911 variant (C2, C4S, Turbo’s, GT3’s etc) as their primary Porsche. Looking a little deeper we identify the following breakdown:

By chance, have you noticed a few BMW’s at some of our recent events? Reason being the PCA and BMW clubs have reciprocal agreements and we are each welcome to attend the other’s events. This is especially nice for those of us with both brands in our garage. Oh wait, this writer’s concours winning, track monster, road rally luster GT3 is no garage queen so I will provide a welcome below to our newest members and stop writing so I can go drive….

No, not from the Cape, but launched by Porsche of Melbourne, on the showroom pad. Introducing the new 2014 Cayman! The new king of curves breaking the code of style and performance. The Cayman launch was dressed with the fanfare of customers and enthusiastic Porsche followers. In grand style red carpet, fine food, refreshment of choice, wonderful staff and a presentation well orchestrating the energy of the Cayman. Consisting of music, smoke and acrobatic ribbon wrapped gymnast girls twirling down from the showroom ceiling, over the Cayman, brought the crowd to a Porsche roar. Great blast off for the fabulous new Cayman rocket!

The new Cayman builds on its classic mid-engine, curve hugging reputation and enthusiasts will be pleased with the latest S specs, 0 to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds, with a top speed of 175

mph. And the new look is absolutely fabulous, picking up the styling cues from the 918, similar to its Boxster sibling, but in Coupe form. If you missed the launch, no worries, get to Porsche of Melbourne and they will set up a test drive. You will not be disappointed.

Article by Brian ReinertEvery June, the world watches as one of the most historic races of the season takes place. For approximately 40 Space Coasters, Porsche of Melbourne (POM) would be the location of choice to watch the start of the 2013 24 Hours of Le Mans. This grand endurance race takes place at the Circuit de la Sarthe, Le Mans, France. It was the 81st edition of the race organized by the Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO), as well as the 90th anniversary of the first running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The race was the third round of the 2013 FIA World Endurance Championship.

Shay Rowe of Porsche of Melbourne and our new PCA liaison Sheryl Swist provided the wide screen HD TV and a fabulous breakfast. Make that a huge fabulous breakfast! No one left hungry. The event

brought out several new members attending their first event as well as many veterans. Ralph Fritsche provided one of his classic Le Mans tech quizzes, but apparently it was too difficult for anyone to answer any of the questions. That was the only way he could be sure he got to keep the grand prize! And of course being the Porsche folks we are, we just “had” to band together and ask for the keys of the new

Caymen on display. Not sure if the Caymen ever returned to the show room. Rumors are Space Coast members purchased two Caymen’s that day? So who is driving that new Black Caymen? And to top it off, Porsche finished one-two in class making it a race to remember! Maybe we need to have a Petit Le Mans breakfast. We only need to buy one car for that race, after all it is Petit!

Have you ever wanted to do something that you knew would be really, really fun, but you had a few unanswered questions in your mind that kept you from doing it? Like when you wanted to dive into that swimming pool, but first you wanted to know how deep it was and if the water was warm?

To help answer questions like this and more related to Driver’s Education events, Florida Citrus Region in coordination with Ron Zitza, sponsored a half day event at Ron’s Zotz Racing facility in Orlando on Saturday, August 10th.

Driver’s Education (DE for short) are high performance driving events sanctioned by the PCA and held at real race tracks around the country. Here you can drive your street legal Porsche more as it is designed to be driven than you can on public roads.

Those of you who have read my Track Times articles over the past year are familiar with Ron’s name. He stores, maintains and sometimes transports my 1971 911T track car for me. He is a second generation Porsche mechanic, builder and tuner, professional race car driver, driving coach and all around nice guy.

Heading over to Orlando early Saturday morning were the usual suspects and some folks newer to DE events. Experienced DE participants included instructors David O’Neal and Brian Reinert and solo qualified drivers Ken Marshall and me. While Curt and Victoria Dieterle and Jorge Hoffmann had done a few DE events before, Les and Terri Spain and Don and Susan Silverzahn had never driven in a DE event before.

Upon arriving at Zotz Racing, we met up with about 30 members of the Florida Citrus Region. After a few welcoming comments by Ron while we ate forbidden fruit in the guise of Krispy Kreme donuts, we were divided into two groups. One group consisted of experienced drivers who were solo qualified (about 10 people) and the other group was everyone else (about 30 people). The larger group consisted mostly of those who had never driven at a DE event before.

A very thorough presentation was made to the larger group about all things related to DE events. This included everything from being sure your car is in the proper condition to be driven on a race track, pre-event and at track inspection, helmet requirements, run groups, the proper metal attitude and the main objectives of a DE event; which are to be safe and have fun. Significant time was also spent providing detailed information about the Roebling Road Raceway. This raceway is FCR’s home track and they organize multiple events there each year.

Come on in. The water’s warm.DE Seminar at Zotz Racing Facility

The smaller, experienced group was educated on the uses and benefits of data acquisition systems. These systems come from various manufacturers (Race Keeper, Track Mate, etc.) and consist of cameras and sensors (throttle, brake, GPS, etc.) installed into your car that accurately and simultaneously capture large amounts of information about how you are managing your car around the race track. This information not only includes speed, track location and video of both the driver and the track; but also rates of braking and acceleration, timing of brake points and acceleration points, transition from throttle to brake and back to throttle, g-forces and more.

Not only can you review this information at your leisure on your computer screen via multiple charts, graphs and pictures, but you can overlay your data over that from another driver and compare it to where they brake, accelerate, etc. You can obtain this comparative data by having a driving coach or instructor drive your car. You can even purchase it on the web! Through this kind of comparative analysis you can very accurately see how your driving skills can be improved and where.

Ron showed us several examples of data that was recorded during recent laps of Sebring and Road Atlanta. Since these are two tracks I have driven before, I could easily relate to the video and curvy lines of data I was seeing. He explained observations that could be made when overlaying the data from one driver over that of another. Such as when each driver was transitioning from throttle to brake heading into the turn seven hairpin at Sebring. One driver stayed on the gas until going immediately into full braking. The other coasted between throttle and braking and then was on and off the brakes. Guess who was faster and in more control of their car?

Even if you don’t have another driver’s data with which to compare, you can observe your own driving habits and inconsistencies between laps. Just by working with your own data you get accurate feedback as to changes you make over the course of a track day to objectively determine if these change are helping or hurting your car control, speed, lap times and consistency. Without data you have to rely on the seat of your pants.

The timing of this educational event at Zotz Racing was perfect for me. I have recently installed the Race Keeper data acquisition system in my track car and will be using it for the first time at Road Atlanta on August 24th and 25th. I am also hiring Ron for a day of professional coaching there. Besides seeing my data and synchronized video for the first time,

I will also be able to lie this over the data captured when Ron drives my car. I expect to plainly see the very specific areas where I can improve my driving skills. Watch for a full report of my experience at Road Atlanta in my Track Times article in the next Escape Velocity.

This event was such a success that Les and Terri Spain went from having never done a DE before to devising a plan to share the use of their new 991 Carrera S so they can both experience all the fun and excitement of participating in DE events together.

Thank you to Lyn Perez and the Florida Citrus Region for organizing this DE educational event. And thanks to Ron Zitza and his team for opening up their facilities, their hospitality and for sharing some of their vast knowledge of all things Porsche with us.

Go forth and drive!

Last summer fellow Space Coasters thought we were crazy, when we drove from Cocoa to Parade in Salt Lake City. I received such a positive response from our story, why not share this years’ journey? When the Hoffman family (Steve, our 2 teenagers, Tyler 15 and Tori 13and myself) announced our plans to drive to Traverse City, MI for Parade and then continue on to Prince George, BC Canada, the snickers were audible. We were already driving to Parade in Michigan, so when my 25th High School Reunion was announced for the following week, Steve, my eternally optimistic husband, suggested “We might as well drive, since we are already halfway there!”

We left June 14th after giving the Cayenne a good service. We headed north and caught Steve’s family reunion in Ohio after enjoying the wildflowers in South Carolina and hills of West Virginia. We caught a Cincinnati Reds game and “Kissed the Bricks” on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. We raced to Chicago to soak up the sights along Lakeshore Drive. We circled Lake Michigan clockwise enjoying Milwaukee, Green Bay and the U.P., before arriving in Traverse City

on June 22nd. The week of Parade was a blur and we were off again!

We spent a couple of glorious days in South Dakota where the driving was phenomenal – curving roads and hills meet historic sights. Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, the Badlands, Sturgis and the Mammoth Site were incredible! Escape 2015 is a MUST!

We headed north and just before we crossed into Saskatchewan Canada, the road sign indicated roadwork: 10 miles of dirt road later we returned to pavement. The Cayenne was dirty, covered in bugs and loving it! We travelled into Drumhellar, AB where dinosaur fossils are abundant and enjoyed the breathtaking Rocky Mountain majesty, as we drove through Jasper and Banff. On July 5th we rolled into Prince George, BC – 6900 miles on the trip odometer.

After a good visit with my Canadian family and friends, we sprinted home. 3300 miles in 4 days – tough, but possible. We would have made it too, except we picked up a spike in a tire on day 4 in the Florida Panhandle. The only hiccup in a month of driving! We love our Cayenne and hope to make many more trips in her – Parade is in Monterrey, CA next year; merely 2300 miles away. Want to join us? I promise you will enjoy the journey!

Grace, the great bubble maker

Many women face a number of problems throughout their lives and during those difficult times often need help. Having a comprehensive community resource like the Women’s Center means if you need a place to live, counseling or help against domestic violence, you have a place to turn. Last year the Center provided services to more than 10,000 clients.

Our mission is to empower women and their families by providing support, education, counseling, information and services. The Women’s Center helps women help themselves to develop safe, healthy and self-sufficient lives. Every dollar raised helps to provide essential services addressing the critical needs of women and their children. By supporting the Women’s Center you’re giving the gift of hope and changing lives for the better, forever!

Space Coast Porsche Club has supported the Women’s Center by dedicating drive events, food drives to fill their pantry and support of the fundraising events held by the Women’s Center Guild. The tax rally registration fee was given to the Center and we have had two food drives and plan another before year end.

Vero Beach (Jurgen Schwanitz)Vero’s Kaffeklatsch continues to grow and more PCA members are showing their Porsches every time we meet. We have quite a variety of cars. Old and new 911’s, 1st gen and 2nd gen Boxters, Cayenne’s, 944 and 928’s and of course the beautiful 356’s. The 356’s are really the ones that stand out the most in my opinion, what a great design. Timeless. Also the very rare Carrera GT sometimes joins our meetings. Lots of great stories, good technical advice and a good breakfast at Panera’s. What a great way to start the day! David Kelly always takes excellent photos of all the cars and a group photo at the end of our meeting. So, come and join us in Vero Beach, it will be fun! Thanks to all of you for being part of this great club, and attending as

many of those wonderful events as possible. Driving our Porsches is an experience like no other car can deliver.

Eau Gallie Yacht Club (Jack Roberts)We continue to have excellent attendance at each of our kaffees at the beautiful Eau Gallie Yacht Club. The weather has been a little warm, but the early start and the cool breezes coming off the river, make it an excellent time to sit on the patio overlooking the waterway, enjoy the company, the delicious offerings and the beautiful view. Please come join us at the next kaffee!

Daytona Beach (Terry Miller)We have been moving our monthly kaffees around a little up at the northern end of the

region to mix it up a bit. We still routinely meet at the Panera on US92, but have also made Lou’s shop AeroDynamics a fairly regular spot and have even been to the Grassroots Magazine office. Keep an eye on the schedule to make sure you know where to find us, but wherever it is, we would love to see you there!

Recollections of Parade 2013

By Tom and Elaine Gorsuch

Now this is difficult, summarizing a week of Porsche extravaganza in just a few paragraphs. We had anticipated for several years returning to this resort destination on Lake Michigan and Traverse City did not disappoint. You can review notable happenings and photo highlights at http://parade2013.pca.org/, everything from the concours, rallies, autocross, tours, Porsche debuts, parties, and the namesake Parade of Porsches. A highlight for Elaine and I was making the trip to Mackinac Island. It was destined to become a summer resort location with scenic vistas and plenty of waterfronts. Very early in the history of the automobile, in 1901 the city council banned these contraptions as they frightened the horses. And thus it has remained to this day—a funny destination for a car club tour. The gardens, hotel, and general ambience did not disappoint.

We do have some other highlights that must be reported. It was a thrill to be part of introducing the Porsche 911 50th anniversary edition at our welcome party. Imagine nearly 2000 Porsche enthusiasts being surprised as one of the earliest 911s was replaced on the golf course display stand by this latest incarnation, the retro styled 991. This was the world premier of the 50th anniversary car which had originally been planned for the Frankfurt autoshow in September. Porsche had brought in journalists from all the notable North American sports car magazines and I was able to spend time with

each as they absorbed the enthusiasm of PCA Parade goers. I’m sure we’ll soon be reading fun recollections in popular publications such as Road & Track and Grass Roots Motorsports.

The absolute highlight for us occurred at the end of the Presidents’ reception. The Presidents’ reception is a special party early in the week where the Executive Council hosts national staff and region Presidents—always in a unique location for socializing and as a general show of appreciation for one another. The Porsche executives always attend which helps make the evening special. At the end of the evening, after the crowd has left, we are able to relax with our Porsche friends and catch up on events since our last time together. Elaine opportunistically had brought her Kindle HD full of photos of our two-month old grandson, Luke. She approached Hans Peter Porsche to show-off our latest pride and joy. Hans Peter responded with a broad smile and then directly pulled a photo portfolio from his suit coat breast pocket to show us a collection of photos of his family and grandchildren. You see, it’s not just the cars, it’s the people.

Star Struck in the Goodie Store

By Lois and Jack Roberts

Jack and I had the privilege of managing the Parade Goodie Store which included finding the souvenir items before Parade, pricing them, displaying them, and running the cash registers to sell them. We had the most amazing support of over 100 volunteers who worked in the Store with us over the six days the Store was open. Almost 5,000 items passed through the checkout stand. The only way I can describe it is in car terms...”it was a Hellava ride!” On the third day, Hans Peter Porsche came in to store and spent about an hour shopping. He bought “things to take home to the family”. Needless to say, we were all thrilled to help him. At the checkout stand, I rang up his items and accepted his credit card, and tried to act like he was just another of our club members, but my head

was clanging with “I wonder if he’ll let me take a picture with him?” and I pulled his credit card receipt out the machine and picked up the pen and started to sign it myself!!! I got as far as “LR” and realized what I was doing. We laughed and I apologized and explained that I was “star struck”. He graciously posed with my red face for a picture and signed badges for other volunteers. Class act.

Concours Excitement at Parade

By Neila and Daniel Bird

We cleaned our 1959 Porsche 356 top to bottom, we bagged the car and shipped it with the Brumos 934 to Michigan. Neila and I attended the 1989 Traverse City Parade 24 years ago with two cars and we are still members of the Western Michigan club. This is the same venue, and we hope we have learned some things about competition! We enjoyed the prep area and sharing with all the other seriously addicted clean freaks in the facility for two days. On the morning of the concours we got up at 5:30 am for placement on the course. It was a short drive, we avoided the irrigation sprinklers and went very slowly on the dew covered grass. Once in place, we started the final prep. Using tape to pick up dirt and grass from driving in and moving things around, I found some cat hair (we have 3 cats) and apparently they had used my jacket for a nap before I put the coat in the car. I pulled out the keys so that I could unlock the outside or the passenger doors and kept on cleaning the hair and other dust/dirt. I moved the seat forward and back (12 way 928 power seats made this

part easy!). I then removed the jacket, and absolutely everything from the inside, so we would not lose points for items left in the car. Remember our German friends made these cars in quite a “minimalist” form, they felt we did not need air conditioning, cup holders, and even an automatic transmission. Remember it is a 54 year old car. (Heck, they hardly thought we needed heaters back then and the radio was an expensive option!) Neila was moving our rooms, as they had fouled up our accommodations and I was of no help to her.

The word came that in 5 minutes we would have to stop fawning/primping over the cars and stand back until the judging was completed. I moved the seats back into place and looked for the key to unlock that door and alas, NO KEY, (did I mention I only have that ONE, SINGLE key??) I tore the car apart looking for the key, inside, outside, in the removed jackets, cleaning rags, everything, starting to panic with about 3 minutes to go, I phoned Neila and told her I must have left the key in the room. She of course had packed the room and actually moved into another one by now, so she was scouring everything we had for the key and was going to miss the concours judging of HER car! The long 3 minutes ended and by then I had 4 others helping me look for the key. You often have to start the car, blow the horn, turn on the wipers, and so on, so the key was a big deal for judging, not to mention I would have to push the car back to Florida!

Neila came down to the concours field just as the judges arrived at her car. They gather around, introductions are made and they explain how and who will evaluate/judge each section of the car. Next they ask for a brief overview of the car, which I shortened and then admitted that while I drove the car to the course, I had lost the key, MAKE THAT THE ONLY KEY!! I explained that I knew I would lose points for no key, but would gladly give those up if a judge could find them.

The judging team started and the inside judge stood back and said here are the keys after moving the driver’s seat back and forth. After much laughter, the interior judge on the other side found an umbrella and a remote control for the radio from under the passenger seat. The laughter and embarrassment continued. I knew these were likely enough to render us out of the competition.

The bottom line is that we found the key, we were able to get the car to the trailer and it is currently being prepared for the trip to the West Coast 356 National Holiday in Santa Fe, NM in October. I am having a duplicate key or two made, so that I can tie one around my neck!!

Another outstanding Parade, the 23rd I have attended, great friends to laugh at/with and another sweet memory of the Michigan Parade, at the same great location. Oh, we did take 1st in class, even with those deductions, so “LUCK STRUCK” again for the Bird’s and this little car!

Pulling in the Kids at ParadeBy Robin and Steve Hoffman & Kids

Driving to every Parade became a goal for the Hoffman Family a couple of years ago. PCA has become a family activity for us and

we feel that this is true for other families as well. With this in mind Robin took over being the Parade Kids Chairperson (which actually meant the WHOLE family was enlisted). We had 70 kids participate in one form or another during the week-long event. Kids whose ages ranged from 6 months to 18 years painted their own wooden cars for the “Kids Concours”, raced bikes, scooters and rip-sticks in the “Kids Anycross” and came to hang out at “Kids Camp” during the big banquets. Our kids had a blast and we were able to sneak away to do some of the fun adult parade activities – the Gimmick Rally, Beer Tasting, Rally Banquet, Tech Quiz, and autocross (Steve won second in his class!). Our own Shelby Goode provided a beautiful painting of Ferdinand Porsche that was the center piece of the Art Show! Overall, a wonderful experience – we hope to see more Space Coasters at Parade next year!

I was born in Venezuela and came to the US to go to college. I got married at the age of 20 and had three children, and now I have two grandchildren! I knew Maribel when we were children in Venezuela. Life brought us together again as adults and we got married a year and a half ago. Maribel also has two adult children. I am a Financial Adviser with Edward Jones in Rockledge, and Maribel stays at home doing her thing. She likes to dance Zumba every weekday, loves her plants, her dog (not mine), and to paint.

When I was 8 years old my dad took my mom, me and my two siblings out of school and we traveled throughout Europe for one year. We first arrived in Stuttgart where my dad took delivery of a 1969 911E, and a Mercedes 280SE coupe. We drove around in the Porsche while in Germany and, since I was the youngest of three, I got to ride in the rear bump between the seats. Talk about a droning sound in the rear and no cushion!! At that time there were few Porsches in inventory and the dealer asked my dad if they could keep it in the showroom on display for the remainder of the year. After that we traveled in the Mercedes where I actually had a seat to sit in, nice!!!

We returned to Venezuela after the year ended and brought both cars. We had the third Porsche to ever arrive in Venezuela. You can

imagine the looks from people, especially when my dad would bring me to school!!!! My dad passed away two years ago, and my license plate now reads “dad n son” in his honor.

My brother Gregory got the bug from an early age too, and he was able to have Porsches from his early 30’s. I bought a 2007 Carrera S in 2011, at last!! I found the car in New York. When my son Sascha and I flew there to look at it, it was love at first sight! (Sorry Maribel). We took two days to drive it back down to Florida and took turns driving. What an awesome father and son experience!

I used to surf until I bought the Carrera, but not anymore!! My weekends are all about cars; I also have two 5 series BMW’s. I have always had a passion for beautiful cars and I keep busy working on them. I have driven in three DEs and I’m now in the blue group (however, don’t know how to play the drums!), and have done one autocross. Maribel and I have attended a few PCA events together and have gotten to know some great people. I even found out my brother Steve Hoffman (one N) was the president!!! Just kidding, but he and Robin have become good friends. So far my closest relationship is Brian Reinert. He has become my instructor and friend, and we try to do things together; he is a great man.

Maribel and I look forward to many years of PCA activities and building great friendships.

THE NEW PORSCHE 918 SPYDER – Part IIFrom comfortable to race-ready: five modes for three motorsThe core of the 918 Spyder concept is its distribution of propulsive power among the three power units; their cooperation is controlled by an intelligent management system. To best exploit these different approaches, the Porsche developers defined five operating modes that can be activated via a “map switch” on the steering wheel, just like in motorsport cars. On the basis of this pre-selection, the 918 Spyder applies the most suitable operating and boost strategy without driver intervention, thus allowing the driver to concentrate fully on the road.

Quiet and elegant: “E-Power”When the vehicle is started up, the “E-Power” mode is the default operating mode as long as the battery is sufficiently charged. In ideal conditions, the 918 Spyder can cover approximately 18 miles on purely electric power. Even in pure electric mode, the 918 Spyder accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in seven seconds and can reach speeds of up to 93 mph. In this mode, the combustion engine is only used when needed. If the battery’s charge state drops below a set minimum value, the vehicle automatically switches to hybrid mode.

Efficient and comfortable: “Hybrid”In “Hybrid” mode, the electric motors and combustion engine work alternately with a focus on maximum efficiency and minimum fuel consumption. The use of individual drive components is modified as a function of the current driving situation and the desired performance. The Hybrid mode is typically used for a fuel economy-oriented driving style.

Sporty and dynamic: “Sport Hybrid”In more dynamic situations, the 918 Spyder selects the “Sport Hybrid” mode for its power source. The combustion engine now operates continuously and provides the main propulsive force. In addition, the electric motors provide support in the form of electric boosting or when the operating point of the combustion engine can be optimized for greater efficiency. The focus of this mode is on performance and a sporty driving style at top speed.

For fast laps: “Race Hybrid”“Race Hybrid” is the mode for maximum performance and an especially sporty driving style. The combustion engine is chiefly used under high load, and charges the battery when the driver is not utilizing its maximum output. Again, the electric motors provide additional support in the form of boosting. Furthermore, the gear-shifting program of the PDK is set up for even sportier driving. The electric motors are used up to the maximum power output to deliver the best possible performance for the track. In this mode, the battery charge state is not kept constant, rather it fluctuates over the entire charge range. In contrast to Sport Hybrid mode, the electric motors run at their maximum power output for a short time for better boosting. This increased output is balanced by the combustion engine charging the battery more intensively. Electric power is thus available even with several very fast laps.

For pole position: “Hot Lap”The “Hot Lap” button in the middle of the map switch releases the

final reserves of the 918 Spyder and can only be activated in “Race Hybrid” mode. Similar to a qualification mode, this pushes the traction battery to its maximum power output limits for a few fast laps. This mode uses all of the available energy in the battery.

Main propulsion: the 918’s eight cylinder engineThe main source of propulsion is the 4.6-liter, eight cylinder engine that produces 608 hp. The engine is derived directly from the power unit of the successful RS Spyder, which explains why it can rev up to 9,150 rpm. Like the race engine of the RS Spyder, the 918 features dry-sump lubrication with a separate oil tank and oil extraction. To save weight, components such as the oil tank and air filter box are integrated into the subframe, and the air induction pipes are made of carbon fiber reinforced polymer. Further extensive lightweight design measures have resulted in such features as titanium connecting rods, thin-wall, low-pressure casting on the crank case and the cylinder heads, a high-strength lightweight steel crankshaft with 180 degrees crankpin offset and the extremely thin-walled alloy steel/nickel exhaust system. Striking features of the V8 are that it no longer supports any auxiliary systems, there are no external belt drives and the engine is therefore particularly compact. Weight and performance optimizations achieve a power output per liter of approx. 133 hp/l – the highest power output per liter of a Porsche naturally aspirated engine – which is significantly higher than that of the Carrera GT (106 hp/l) and is outstanding for a naturally aspirated engine.

Unique Exhaust: top pipesIt isn’t just this engine’s performance but also the sound it makes that gets your heart racing when you’re in the 918. This is attributable first and foremost to the so-called top pipes. The tailpipes terminate in the upper part of the rear end immediately above the engine. No other production vehicle uses this solution. The top pipes’ greatest benefit is optimal heat removal, because the hot exhaust gases are released via the shortest possible route, and exhaust gas back pressure remains low. This design requires a new thermodynamic air channeling concept. With the HSI engine, the hot side is located inside the cylinder V, the intake channels are on the outside. Another benefit is that the engine compartment stays cooler. This is especially beneficial to the lithium-ion battery, as it provides optimum performance at temperatures between 68 and 104 degrees Fahrenheit. Additionally, less energy needs to be used for active cooling of the battery.

Upside-down for a low center of gravity: DoppelkupplungA seven-speed Doppelkupplung (PDK) transmission handles power transmission to the rear axle. The high-performance transmission is the sportiest version of the successful PDK; it has undergone a complete redesign for the 918 Spyder and has been further optimized for high performance. To ensure a low mounting position for a low center of gravity of the entire vehicle, the gear unit was turned “upside down” in contrast to other Porsche series. If no power is required on the rear axle, the two motors can be decoupled by opening the decoupler and PDK clutches. This is the action behind the Porsche hybrid drive’s typical “coasting” with the combustion engine switched off.

918 Spyderlithium-ion battery comprising 312 individual cells with an energy content of about seven kilowatt hours. The battery of the 918 Spyder has a performance-oriented design in terms of both power charging and output, so that it can fulfill the performance requirements of the electric motor. The power capacity and the operating life of the lithium-ion traction battery depend on several factors, including thermal conditions. That is why the battery of the 918 Spyder is liquid-cooled by a dedicated cooling circuit. The global warranty period for the traction battery is seven years.

To supply it with energy, Porsche developed a new system with a plug-in vehicle charge port and improved recuperation potential. This vehicle charge port in the B-pillar on the front passenger side lets users connect the storage battery to an electrical supply at home to charge it. The charge port is standardized for the country of purchase. The on-board charger is located close to the traction battery. It converts the alternating current of the household electric supply into direct current with a maximum charge output of 3.6 kW. Using the supplied Porsche Universal Charger (AC), the traction battery can be charged with a conventional wall plug in seven hours from a ten ampere rated, fused power socket a US 110 Volt household electrical supply, for example. Furthermore, the Porsche Universal Charger (AC) can be installed at home in the garage using the Charging Dock. It enables rapid and convenient charging within approximately two hours, irrespective of regional conditions. The Porsche Speed Charging

Station (DC) is available as an optional extra. It can fully charge the high-voltage battery of the 918 Spyder in just 25 minutes.

For even higher performance: the Weissach packageFor very performance-oriented customers of the 918 Spyder, Porsche offers the “Weissach” package. These modified super sports cars can be recognized at first glance by special colors and designs that are based on legendary Porsche race cars. The roof, rear wings, rear-view mirrors and frames of the windscreen are made of visible carbon. Parts of the interior are upholstered with Alcantara instead of leather, and visible carbon replaces much of the aluminum. Sound insulation has been reduced. The emphasis on performance is not just visual: very lightweight magnesium wheels reduce unsprung masses; gross weight was reduced by about 77 lbs. The benefits are experienced in further improved dynamic performance. Other references from motorsport are six-point seatbelts for driver and front passenger, optional film-coating instead of body paint, as well as additional aerodynamic body parts in visible carbon.Porsche of Melbourne is taking orders now! Hurry in, and be among the very proud few to call this technical masterpiece your own.

Article by Lou LindenPhotos by Curt Dieterle

New Year’s Eve. A great dinner with friends. A glass of wine – maybe two.

Ken Marshall said, “I would really like to take an engine apart and see how it works.” Lou Linden said, “OK, let’s do it. I have taken lots of engines apart”.

Oh, those words turned out to be an interesting beginning.

I called Ken a few weeks later and said, “OK Ken, let’s get an engine. Can we work on it in your garage?” He didn’t have room and I didn’t either. So we started looking for a storage room in which to do our little hobby project. My brother-in-law told me about some units that he was renting for the owner. Ken and I went and took a look. It was HUGE! - but not too expensive so we went for it.

Ken recommended that we get a Porsche engine since we both like Porsches and would like to learn more about them. Meanwhile, Steve Hoffman was busy with a whole bunch of Porsche 944 stuff. Yes, stuff. He told me he had an engine, or two. Ken and I started thinking about that so followed up with Steve. It turns out that Steve had a Porsche 968, a 944, two engine blocks, 6 transmissions and a whole lot more. He offered us a package deal that we thought sounded good so we went “all in”.

Since we now had two cars and more parts than we ever expected we built storage shelves, work benches and sorted all of the parts. We felt that we needed to have a lift so we could get under the cars and make our job easier. Whatever happened to taking an engine apart? Where did we go wrong? Can you guess when Carole and Donna started wondering if we had lost our minds? In order to protect ourselves we formed a Limited Liability Company (KL Tech Group LLC) and got insurance, a checking account and all the other stuff you have to have to buy and sell things. Carole is still wondering how we can protect ourselves from ourselves.

We sold the 968. We now need to inventory, take pictures and advertise all of the extra parts that we have. We are now working on the 944 (very slowly because we are doing 944s for Dummies). We have books (Steve had the original set of 944 shop manuals), videos (Pelican Parts and Clark’s Garage have lots of them) and the internet. We will see if we ever get an engine apart.

For our Open House 52 Space Coast Region members and guests attended the Kaffeeklatch on Sunday, August 18th. It

started at 9 AM and was already pretty warm. Imagine that, warm in August in Central Florida. Anyway, about 35 Porsches, 1 Corvette and 1 Mustang attended. It was a great turnout and I think everyone had a good time. Ken Marshall and Glover Oil sponsored the breakfast and door prizes. We owe them a great thank you.

Ken and I are there many Saturdays so give us a call to make sure, then stop by. If you need 944 parts we might have what you need. If you have 944 parts to get rid of let us know. Steve Hoffman can explain how easy we are. It is a fun hobby, if not yet financially breaking even. Maybe someday? Nah.

Got Something to Say?

Article by Jack RobertsPhotos by Curt Dieterle

We weren’t quite sure what was gonna happen. Space Coaster, Jason Breitfeller had arranged for us to enjoy his club — Suntree County Club — as the location for our summer banquet. Now this is a really nice place and we had a beautiful room with tablecloths, linen napkins, real silverware and everything, but you could feel the tension in the air. This evening marked the end of our calendar fundraiser for Candlelighters, a local charity supporting children with cancer and their families. As you know, we’re producing a 13-month calendar with individual photo shoots of Space Coast members and their cars. Members wishing to be in the calendar participated in an e-mail auction. Shay Rowe, owner and ever-generous general manager of Porsche of Melbourne is funding the production costs for the calendar. Fellow Space Coast member Ray Baldino of Baldino Photography Studios in Cocoa Beach, one of Florida’s most talented and innovative portrait photographers is contributing his skills to make the calendar truly unique.

As we arrived at Suntree, 11 of the 13 months for the calendar had been sold and substantial bids were in place on the last two months. Over the past few weeks a number of bidders had entered the competition only to be kicked off the island by a higher bid. What was to happen tonight, the last night of the auction? Would we all still be friends or would there be blood on the floor?

During the cocktail hour, we made small talk as our heads swiveled from side to side anticipating what might happen. But at 7PM, the salads were served and we were all still talking.

At 7:30 the main course was served and all was well. We made it through dessert, too.

Then Steve Hoffman, our current president, stepped to the mic and started the business end of the night. Tom Gorsuch, PCA National Treasurer and fellow Space Coaster provided us some insight on the health and direction of PCA and shared his heartfelt personal journey with the club. Steve gave out name plaques for previously won events and the door prizes as well. These included a variety of items (even a Porsche watch) from Porsche of Melbourne, a Porsche 500GB ext. hard drive from Jurgen Schwanitz’ ACT Computers, a framed piece of photography by Victoria Dieterle and some golfing goodies from Lois and Jack Roberts.

Finally, there was just one thing left on the agenda. Everyone knew it and the tension was palpable when Steve opened the floor for bids. At this point we had two bids of $350 on the two remaining months, both from Dan Bird. Right off the mark Tom Gorsuch took the first open month with a $500 bid. David O’Neal topped Dan’s $350 with his own $400 for the last month of the calendar. Stunned, Dan appeared lost as his hopes to have TWO cars in the calendar were dashed. Then Linda Fow yelled “$500!” and before David could gather his resources, it was over.

I think everyone’s still speaking, but I heard Dan Bird mutter as he left “I WILL have both cars in the calendar next year.” Our advice — bid early, bid often and don’t miss the chance to see what happens next year. The food was great and the venue beautiful. Plus, I won a Porsche cap!

We have raised over $8,000 to date through our Calendar Auction and additional donations. Members wishing to make a donation should make out the check to Candlelighters then mail to Lois Roberts at 1575 N Hwy A1A, Indialantic 32903. We plan to present Candlelighters with this donation at our Christmas Party in December.

You may have noticed some of the changes in our officials at the front of this issue. We have made a couple changes in an attempt to increase our involvement in the Skills area. Translation - We want to be able to be self-sufficient when it comes to Driver’s Education (DE) and Autocross events. Ken Marshall is assuming the role as our Chief Driving Instructor. He has already co-chaired one event and is assisting with the upcoming Oktoberfast DE. We have future co-sponsored events planned and are working towards having the capability to host our own event. We have also appointed Craig Barrie as our Skills Chairperson. Craig will continue to work with Florida Citrus region on our annual autocross series, working to get more events in the Brevard county area. We are also in the process of procuring our own equipment, so again, we will have the ability to hold our own autocrosses in the near future.

In the meantime, here are a few opportunities to get out and drive those cars, with precision and speed!

Well, I decided: I was going to PBIR (Palm Beach International Raceway) for my second DE. We all met at the rest area on I-95 just south of Malabar. Brian Reinert drove his silver GT3. David O’Neal was right behind with his grey GT3-RS. Then Craig Barrie was already there with his lovely wife Lynda and his souped-up 996 in the trailer. Ken Marshall was trailering his brand new white Cayman S. Charles arrived from Plant City trailering his grey GT3-RS. Wow, what a collection of monsters! Instead I arrived with my luxury sport sedan/hatchback Panamera!!! I felt a little out of place, but at least I had my ventilated seats, navigation, and surround sound on while the others were in the trucks pulling the trailers or sitting in the not so comfy GT3’s. There are always pros and cons in life. Aside from Brian and David I didn’t know anyone else. But it just takes being a Porsche owner to immediately make friends. Everybody was outreaching and nice, especially when you have that car bonding in common. So we proceeded towards Palm Beach. First stop in Jupiter for a breakfast/brunch. Of course we got separated on the highway and a few took the wrong exit and got lost. What happened to modern technology? With all the GPS systems, iPhones, etc. I didn’t even think it was possible to get lost driving anymore these days! But some of us accomplished that. We finally all regrouped at the restaurant.

We arrived at the track, and I saw familiar faces. Some of the same people I met back in May during my first DE at Sebring. It was nice to feel surrounded by people I already knew. Then inevitably I met more people. These events are based primarily on you driving on track during certain sessions, but what I discovered at the same time you inevitably make new acquaintances talking about an incredible array of silly car topics, from cleaning products, exhausts systems, suspensions, tires, etc. Boy talk, and this is not sex discrimination.

Before starting my laps I turned most my electronics off. With great surprise my

instructor, Brian, even turned off his favorite gadget, the ventilated seat! Then you go in a “zone”: Concentration and awareness; listening to your instructor; paying attention to the flag stations and not being afraid of anything. And when you realize your instructor is not talking to you anymore, two things could have happened: He could have had a heart attack, or he didn’t have anything to say because you were doing everything right. I’m glad my case was the latter. A few times I missed that infamous late apex, and I immediately realized it and tried to correct it the next time around. I remember bragging so much about my PDK, and just like that I started to hate it. It kept upshifting at times I didn’t think appropriate. My instructor concurred. So, bye-bye auto PDK and I switched to manual, paddle shifting. What a difference. I am never going to revert to auto PDK on track any longer. I’ve learned a valuable lesson here, and the purists will unquestionably give me a star on my forehead for saying so. But the thirty minute sessions go by so fast like lightning.

The dinner included in the package was a good initiative and again helped to bond every one. The spicy barbecue-flavored food wasn’t bad either! Then the slow sunset brought hints of darkness and prompted the organizers to turn on the lighting system around the track. A few minutes later Brian was in front of me dangling my new blue bracelet. Yeah! I got promoted. The new bracelet meant I was not a novice student any longer, but an advanced student. I had to struggle to pull the darn old green thing off my wrist. I eventually

succeeded and finally wore my new blue symbol of accomplishment. I showed it off like a fine piece of jewelry. Couldn’t wait to go back on track with my new blue group - not the Blue Man Group that performs at Universal in Orlando.

Bummer, it started to rain. Finally they cleared us to go. Everybody discouraged me to run in the wet. Danger, risks, rain inside the cockpit, and so many excuses. I absolutely wanted to go instead and went. No intentions to destroy my expensive machine, but curious to challenge the elements. Only three cars made it in that session, including me. It was like driving on a skating rink. Couldn’t push. It was like holding the steering wheel with two fingers being as precise as possible, delicately modulating the gas all the time and especially at the exit of the turns, and being extra smooth on braking to prevent missing the turns completely. With PDK on manual again I really felt I assimilated a connection with my vehicle that I didn’t possess before. I felt like a surgeon performing a very difficult surgery. Once you know your limits on the slippery wet side, you are a better driver. No arguments. But as a chicken, I didn’t have the courage to take Traction Control off, though, which saved me twice by the way, but my excuse was I knew TC was on and would have saved me in any case, like a guardian angel!!! And through my mind I was revisiting images of one of my idols, Ayrton Senna, probably the greatest race car driver ever in the rain. It’s always good to have dreams and reference points in your head. My session in the rain was one of the greatest lessons I’ve had. It’s not for everybody, agreed. But, man oh man, what a thrill my last thirty minutes were! And next time, if it rains again, I’m even going to disengage the Traction Control. Hmmm, take it easy Speedracer. Is this a sign of blatant overconfidence, or what? That’s what a great day does to you. It makes you feel like you’re the reincarnation of iconic drivers like Nuvolari, Fangio, Senna, Gilles Villeneuve…..okay, okay, you got the point.

So another EV issue and another classic Porsche article. I was struggling a bit to come up with a topic to write about, so I finally succumbed to our Presidents’ suggestion and decided to write a story comparing and contrasting the old school Porsche 914 to the contemporary Porsche Cayman. On the surface both cars seem to have a lot in common, enough that they should make for an interesting comparison.

Both cars were the entry point into Porsche ownership in terms of cost. Both have a mid-engine layout and therefore are also 2-seaters. Both have been raced successfully, but neither would be allowed to threaten the Porsche 911 for the top spot in the pecking order. Interestingly, while the Cayman is by far the more advanced car, I doubt that it will ever come close to matching the 914 for it’s best finish at the 24 Hour of Le Mans, where in 1970 a Porsche 914/6 GT placed 6th overall.

The more I looked into the details however, the more I realized that any real comparisons between the two cars are forced at best. The Porsche 914 started life as a replacement for the by that time dated Porsche 912, with the additional intent of it being the

final installment of a development project that Porsche had with Volkswagen. In fact, originally the Volkswagen version was to be sold as a VW and equipped with a 4 cylinder VW power plant while the Porsche version was to be equipped with a 6 cylinder engine adapted from the Porsche 911T. The Cayman on the other hand was always pure Porsche and from the start was provided with a flat-6 boxer engine and conceived as a coupe

derivation of the Porsche Boxster.

Speaking of coupes, the Porsche 914 wasn’t one. In fact one of its’ most desirable features was its’ targa like top that could easily be removed and stored (without folding), in the rear trunk, to provide the owner with a pleasant mix of both hardtop and open air motoring. On the other hand, Porsche does

not even provide for a sunroof option on the Cayman. In fact to most avid Cayman owners, the mere thought of a sunroof would be considered heresy.

Let’s move on to performance. The vast majority of 914’s sold came with varying displacements of the VW power plant and as such the car was traditionally underpowered and not very quick. Even in it’s final evolution with the 2.0L power plant, the power output was right around 100hp. Not much even for a sub 1000kg car like the 914. Zero to 60 times were a rather lackluster 10 seconds or so.

In contrast the Cayman, especially in its’ current S trim, boasts 325hp and with PDK in Sport Plus mode, can produce consistent zero to 60 time of 4.4 seconds. So it’s clear

the Porsche Cayman has all the potential to deliver a world class performance driving experience.

In terms of handling both cars provide exceptional cornering capability. For it’s day the Porsche 914, with its’ lightweight mid-engine design, was more reminiscent of a go-kart than a traditional ‘70’s sports car. The Cayman however provides an almost telepathic driving experience that not only anticipates, but seemingly corrects driver input before it is even applied.

All in all, while both cars will be remembered as the less expensive mid-engine alternative to the up-scale rear engine 911. The Cayman is a cutting edge performance machine by the modern standards of the day. Something the 914 was never designed to be. Don’t get me wrong the 914 is a wonderful little car and can be a lot of fun to drive at modest speed, but the Cayman is something very special.

Owning a car for a long time makes it special. (16 years it’s been). It’s hard to describe but my 928 hasbecome a good old friend. I know it’s “just” a car but it’s alsoa Porsche.

I know all its idiosyncrasies and faults. It still surprises andexcites me when I turn the key and the old V8 rumbles to life. The sound is somehow calming to me. I am always amazed how thecar seems to wake up and just wants to go for a run. Definitely, it’s not showing its age. Being assolid as the first day it was built, the doors sound like steel vaults closing. Driving over a railroad track does not sound like abag of loose tools being thrown around either!

It is just put together properly; I like things that are done right. The attention to detail and the craftsmanship show that the guyswho assembled this car cared about it. No screw-guns and robots smashing things together. I just watched a show on howthe build new cars and quite honestly there isn’t much manual labor involved anymore. I know it’s more precise and better butit does take something away from it.

So it’s been 35 years now since the 928 came about. Of course we all know that the 928 was supposed to replace the 911eventually, but that definitely did not happen. It was just a futuristic car in the 80’s. When other cars looked like they wereboxes with wheels attached, the 928 definitely stood out. Just look at the dashboard. It still looks modern today. (Of coursethe tape player gives away its true age). I think you can clearly see in today’s modern Porsches some of the original 928’sdesigns. For example, the large PORSCHE script on the back of the 928 is also in the back of the 991 911. Also the Panamera’srear is shaped a lot like the 928, so is the interior wraparound design.

928 are cheap to buy but EXPENSIVE to own. Regular maintenance of course, like we all know, is the key to happy Porscheownership. I have seen the market value for the 928 go up a bit recently and I would not be too surprised if in 20 years it willhave some real substantial value. If there are any good ones left.

I remember watching the 928 as the supercar to have in Germany in the 80’s. The magazines were full of pictures. Lots ofpraises but also some negative comments. It was actually nicknamed the “Egg-Porsche” in Germany because the rear lookslike an egg shape. My father’s former boss actually had a brand new S4 years ago and it was the most amazing thing I hadseen at that time. This fellow asked my father to drive the car on the Autobahn one night coming home from a business trip. His boss fell asleep and my father got it up to 240Kmh and it was the best drive ever. Wish I could have been there for that!

So how bad is my fascination with the 928???

Lets’s see…When the movie “Risky Business” came out my favorite scene’s are of the car.

When the time on a digital clock goes to 9:28 I think of how great that looks.

I am NOT a happy camper when I see a 928 that is in bad shape or mistreated.

I have a house phone shaped like a 928 (found it at thrift shop)

Now I have to be totally honest, there have been times of doubt when things break and repairs get expensive quickly. And then I think that I am not the only one who goes through this ritual when owning an old car.The feeling of …. “Time to sell it… too expensive to keep up”…..

But a good night’s sleep and opening my garage door in the morning changes my mind every time.Maybe it’s because I am German and the car has such an emotional value to me? That could be why. But then I do like most things German. (Where is my Schnitzel?)

Escape is coming to Central Florida! If you are not familiar with Porsche Escape it is a non-competitive compliment to Porsche Parade. Each year Parade is held as a national competitive event. Escape is usually on the opposite side of the country from Parade to attract different regional participants, as well as those who may prefer a more social environment.

In 2014 Space Coast Region and Florida Citrus Region are jointly hosting Escape to Magical Orlando at the Disney Coronado Springs Resort. This venue provides a fantastic family oriented location from which to provide many Porsche and family events. We will have dinners, drives, a people’s choice concours/car show, a goodie store and many other activities. November is the perfect time to come to Central Florida for great weather and less crowds.

You can volunteer to be a committee chairperson or a supporter. We need everyone to step up and help make this one of the premier events ever held for Porsche Club of America and YOU CAN DO IT!

Please join us in executing this fantastic event. We need volunteers to help with:

• Events• Drives• Meals• Publications• Advertising • Sponsors• Web/FaceBook• Safety/Security• Registration• Hospitality

My Z3 had a storage slot for a warning triangle that I filled with the correct German product. I wondered why my 987/997s didn’t have a similar storage slot until I saw one mounted in a Tech Equipment picture and in a 1/18 Cayman model car.

When I obtained my 981 and started exploring how to mount my 987 spare tire, I noticed on the aft wall of my trunk, a set of slots opening inward. I ordered everything in the PET illustration of the spare tire kit; the triangle, case, and 2 support brackets that fit on the slots.

To mount them, you will have to cut slots in the black trim. If you look closely on your trim, you will observe faint lines in the trim showing where to cut. The hardest part in

this is having the courage to make a cut. I like to keep things as original as possible. I had to use strong metal cutters to get through the trim material. The supports slide on the metal slots. The picture shows the finished mount with a spare (old style) mounted and ready to drive off. The old style of spare tire rides over the triangle and the new style mounts just under the triangle.

I suspect 991 machines also have these slots for use in Europe, so the techniques discussed above would be the same for the 991. Contact me at 321-267-8414 if you have any questions.
