Jean PesceEDET 650, Fall 2013Internship Proposal SCATFACS Website

August 27, 2013After working on various projects in educational technology, many interesting

applications have come to mind for my professional field of Family and ConsumerSciences (FACS). Using the skills I have learned, I plan to create a dedicated and morerobust web presence for my state professional organization, the South Carolina

Association of Teachers of Family and Consumer Sciences (SCATFACS). Under theumbrella of the South Carolina Association of Career and Technical Educators (SCATE)athttp://www.scacte.org/SCATFACS/index.htm, we currently have only one pagededicated to our group.

My vision for the SCATFACS site is a centralized repository for resources andhistorical documentation. Access for all FACS professionals and others would begranted for most of site for available speakers, government and other links. However, prime access would be granted to all of site, which would include personal contact

information and forums for SCATFACS members only (to encourage membership). Thisconcept came to be when the FACS teachers recently received several lengthyannotated lists of classroom resources on our state departments listserv. It would beuseful to have these organized and cross-referenced by subject. Additional contentwould be for professional development (including funding), and personal enrichment.

Although I have been a member of this group for only a few years, it is evident

that there is a need for a more contemporary solution which I can offer. There may be

limited communication on the local, as well as, regional and state levels which could be

addressed here. The latest concept of improving education through participation in

Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) is the theory behind this depot for FACS

educators. Best practices and student work would each be included to provide

inspiration and direction for colleagues who are rarely seen or heard from around the

state. On that note, it would be engaging to have a social aspect to the site as well.

Small contests or information searches about relevant people and places around the

state could help create a stronger feeling of camaraderie. As this association works in a

field requiring very concrete resources, a clearinghouse for unused items would benefit

many of these teachers particularly in rural areas with limited access to a larger

community. As for preserving history, this space would showcase the current

SCATFACS members and the activities of their students and preserve that information

    for future reference.

The technology in my school district is directed under the auspices of the AikenCounty Public School District Technology Services Staff. This includes Mike House,

Technology Specialist for my school, Michelle Everhart, Lead Technology Specialist for

the district, and Terri Booth, Lead Web Administrator for the district. These are the

experts who could oversee my work on the SCATFACS site as I perfect my skills in

    educational technology.
