“SAMBANDH” - SWEDEN IN INDIA

Did you know that “Sambandh” is a word in both Hindi and Swedish with the same meaning? Well, we have adopted the word as the new title of this year’s Business Climate Survey report, as it describes well what we want to build. Sam-bandh means relationship and connection.

The 170 Swedish companies in India currently employ more than 185,000 people directly and another 1,3 million indirectly across the country. This is an increase with 20 percent over the last two years. The community is positive about the business outlook in India as 65 percent, more than ever, consider the business climate favorable.

This, along with what improvements companies see would further boost the investment climate made up an important input to the Joint Commission meeting for Economic, Industrial and Scientific Cooperation (JCEC) on May 17, between the Minister of Commerce and Industry of India, Ms Nirmala Sitharaman and Ms Ann Linde, Minister for EU Affairs and Trade representing Sweden. Paolo Colella, Managing Director Ericsson India represented the business community and high-lighted our focus on building business with holistic sustainability as foundation; economical viable, socially inclusive and environmental friendly. As a direct result, the two sides have agreed on a mutual mechanism to address ‘ease of doing business’. More on this later!

The Business Climate Survey report was released in the press conference follow-ing the meeting. Check out the coverage from NDTV.

India and Sweden are also strengthening the collaboration on IPR and IP related questions. The Swedish Patent and Registration Office (PRV) was in Delhi the same week and the Chamber hosted a company interaction on May 16, preceding further discussions with their counterparts from the Indian side. Strengthening the protection of IPR is one area highlighted in the BCS that we need to work on.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

The month of May ended with the Annual General Meeting of the Chamber. The topic of the day was how we Sweden can be a trusted partner in India’s progress, bringing to the table a long-term commitment of meaningful business with sus-tainability and innovation at its core.
