BIG G 60K Ride: Ethan Millson aged 7 years

Ethan was probably the youngest BIG G 60k rider we have had. Despite the weather he seemed to take it comfortably in his stride.

Leading dad out Huggate feed station

Back at base Fed, watered and thumbs up with his BIG G T Shirt (which will fit him one day).

Ethan (age 7) said of his Big G participation:

"I liked doing the Big G because I have never biked that many miles before."

Even the rain and Nunburnholme climb didn't put him off too much and he is planning to come back again next year.

LVRC Flex-Tech Etteridge: Amanda Dean & Friends

We had a good showing for Hull Thursday at this LVRC race at Great Limber with Paul Campbell in the A category, Neil Dean in D, Mandy Dean in F and Rob Stones in G; plus Richard Moore (Squadra) in the B category. We also had team support from Mark Walker and Brett Waterhouse who came out to cheer us. Watching the race finish they were impressed with the camaraderie of the vet racers. Battle for the line then patting each other on the back …. it’s not BC racing! The AB and CD races were 5 laps: 47 miles with 6 climbs of the hill. Whilst the EFG race was 4 laps: 38 miles with 5 climbs of the hill. Rob was amazing again coming 1st in his race and Richard 2nd in the Bs. Both Neil and Paul took the unfashionable 4th place (becoming a habit) whilst I produced a good last finisher … but not last. Rob: After the last Limber Race I did get the new bike - a Wilier Cento Air - but found out too late in the last Road Race League that I was under-geared and my old legs couldn't keep up with the youngsters. Any way, back to Ed's and a 53/39 fitted (thanks Ed) which proved a boon on the 3-mile fast descent on last Sunday's Limber circuit. Again the over-70s field was just about the best around, including former World champ Mike Allen, just turned 70 last week, and another rider I've always found hard to beat. Mandy was also in the field with the over-60s pushing the pace on the 5 ascents of the long drag and she performed outstandingly, just losing touch a couple of times but always rejoining on the descent. So after a couple of breakaway attempts, always shadowed by Richard Booth, it came down to a slightly uphill sprint after we had been virtually neutralised with a mile to go by the AB peloton passing us, fairly slowly actually. I placed well on the lead-out, following ace sprinter Gaz Hill, and got the win with a few bike lengths to spare. Now I've just got to repeat that in the Worlds next week in Austria.

Neil: I came close to not starting this race at all due to a migraine the afternoon before. These generally leave me exhausted for 48 hours, but if I hadn’t gone to the race then neither would Mandy, and I couldn’t let that happen.

200m into the race the road was completely blocked by a huge farm vehicle that couldn’t pass some parked cars. The lead car and all the riders were brought to a standstill thinking this might take a while. With another age group scheduled to start shortly after our race, I went back to the start to tell them what was going on and that it might be best to delay their start. By the time I got back to the road blockage, which was still there, the race had gone! The lead car and riders had gone up the pavement and were out of sight. The race organiser was there in his car and told me to set off after them and, once he got through, he’d give me a tow behind his car. I must admit that I thought the race was now a lost cause, but I set off and he caught me up after a couple of minutes. Soon after, while I stayed as close as I dared to his back bumper, I spotted the race ahead and we slowly closed in. He stayed further back from the bunch than I wanted, but I was able to get onto the back of them just before the first attacks started.

Feeling stuffed from the migraine and chase, I sat near the back of the bunch for the rest of the race. No serious attempt was made by me in the finish sprint and I finished just outside the prizes.

Mandy: I like both the Great Limber circuits and this one is my favourite as the hill does not seem as long. This is probably my last race of the season and I am wondering whether I should pack it in as there is no chance of beating the guys, the best result I could hope for is to finish in the peloton and so far that has been out of my reach.

Setting off from base is nerve wracking – will I get embarrassingly dropped? First time up the hill, tough but held on and then no problem holding the group until the next climb. In-between there were a lot of little efforts followed by easing off, all of which taxed me but gave me time to recover. 2nd time up the hill I lost 20 metres before the turn and had to work hard to get back. 3rd time a gap opened and it was a long chase back on down the hill, in fact just time to catch then position myself for the turn into the village. (I have to position well for the corners because just a small gap means a really big effort to get back). And so, 4th climb of the hill, no surprise I could not get back to them but, the final bell had rung and I knew some of my race were behind me (actually they were already eating cake back at the village hall) so I kept up the effort. The AB group passed me about half way down the hill and Paul shouted get on. I did and held on until the corner so by the village hall I was alone and my legs were destroyed, but only 4 miles/one climb to the finish.

Mark and Brett joined me which was really encouraging. Thanks guys. I finished and a few guys said well done and Eddie the organiser gave me a bottle of wine because I was the only lady racer. I really enjoy the support I get in the races so maybe I will keep going next year

Paul: Another safe and enjoyable LVRC race and this time very tactical. 5½ laps of the Great Limber circuit with 6 climbs up to the finish line for 47 undulating miles in total.

The A/B race (40 to 44 yr olds and 45 to 49 yr olds) kicked off within the first half-lap with attacks and chases and a group of 6 eventually getting a large enough gap up the first climb. However, the speed of the breakaway was so high that two of the breakaway riders couldn’t

Page 10: Scene - HTRChtrc.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/HTRC-Scene-August-2016.pdf · them just before the first attacks started. Feeling stuffed from the migraine and chase, I sat near

hold on and were back in the main bunch before the end of the first descent. Another breakaway rider would also get dropped to be caught later by the main bunch leaving just 3 riders up the road.

I was, as usual, not in the break but in the main bunch. The pace of the attacks and the chases meant that a number of riders couldn’t hold the pace up the first climb resulting in a very small main bunch. I was trying to do my fair share of work in order to keep the pace up and maybe pull back the breakaways but I did have to sit out a few turns as I was struggling at times. With two laps to go it was clear that we would not catch the 3-man breakaway (who were flying) and a number of the stronger riders stopped doing turns on the front.

Fortunately there were still others who were willing to work - some of them more than they probably should have. I felt a bit guilty for not pulling through on every turn earlier and did contribute to keep the bunch moving. As we crested the climb for the penultimate time and started down the descent, a group of three of us got a gap from nowhere - probably as the bunch was reforming after the climb and people were taking on nutrition. However, none of the three of us were willing to fully commit (I like my short sprints rather than long breaks) and it all came back together at the bottom of the descent.

There then ensued the tactics – the A riders had yellow numbers on their backs and the B riders had white numbers. I was looking out for A riders and was unfazed when white numbers attacked up the road. However, as soon as a yellow number attacked, I chased. This resulted in lots of stop/starts with both As and Bs attacking, chasing and counter-attacking. In the end nothing stuck and it all came down to the final climb where one A rider who had been trying to drop me for the last half-lap attacked again and again until eventually I could no longer respond. As a result of all the attacking, the group had disintegrated behind me with just 2 B riders ahead of me (one of whom was local rider Rich Moore) and the one A rider who had become my nemesis for the last half-lap. Hence, I rolled across the line 7th from all the As and Bs and 4th in my age group (As). There was much congratulatory back-patting and story-swapping on the descent back to the village hall HQ where another great spread of homemade sandwiches and baking awaited us.

East Yorkshire Road Race League 2016: Mike McAllister

Season 2 - A View from Group1 The following is a summary of my experience riding Group 1 of the East Yorkshire Road Race League 2016. Apologies for any factual mistakes, I'm writing this from memory a few weeks after the last race.

After finishing the first year of my racing career and scoring a lowly 5 points (ok the 5 points was for marshalling) and a couple of back of the bunch finishes I looked to improve things for 2016. They say "if you keep doing the same thing then you'll get the same result", using this theory I decided to tweak my training which consisted of a couple of 2 hour hilly or flat bike rides a week.

Once Jim's winter Training had finished I started a new routine which I've described below.

Tommy Coyle (local boxing star) runs a BoxFit class at East and West Hull Gyms and after my better half recommended the sessions I thought I'd give it a go. The last time I'd been to a gym, it was at school in 1983 and so was a little anxious at my first session but it's a pretty relaxed setup and I soon fitted in. I ended up doing a 1 hour BoxFit session and a 2 hour session on the bike each week, for around 12 weeks before EYRRL started. Clearly I wasn't going to set the world alight with that amount of training but with work and life to balance I stuck pretty rigidly to my routine to get the most from it.

___________________________________________________________________________ Race 1 – Sproatley Date: 28th April Conditions: Rain/Cold

I marshalled this race and the conditions were awful with the race being reduced by a lap because of rain and low temperatures. I was lucky enough to have the company of Simon Posnett, and we both enjoyed bagging 5 EYRRL marshalling points. Danny Posnett won at a bit of a canter after making a brave solo breakaway.

Race 2 - Little Weighton Date: 12th May Conditions: Dry/Sunny/Windy My favourite circuit, I was feeling confident and ready to give it a good go. Unfortunately Andy Abbott wasn't riding, which meant we didn’t have anybody to manage us. A few riders shouted at the corners "Keep it together" and we sort of kept it together though after a few laps things fragmented. I clearly recall seeing a City Road Club Rider head into the distance, I was pretty confident we'd catch him as we had a fairly handy group going. On the last descent to Riplingham we were caught by Group 2 and co and the pace upped. Once we got to the final ascent of White Gap Road I was still in the bunch and started to hear everybody wind up for the sprint. I felt like a rabbit caught in headlights, I'd finally made it, in the bunch and ready to sprint. However, as that "I've finally made it" moment kicked in I genuinely forgot to sprint even though I had the legs for it. Joe Faichney had kept away for an easy win, well done Joe. Race 3 – Walkington Date: 26th May Conditions: Dry/Windy

Total chaos seemed to be order of the day, there were breaks attacking as soon as we got to High Hunsley, and this continued throughout the race until the last descent to Bluestone Bottoms when all the groups came together. A few choice words were sounded as riders began to form a large bunch, it was pretty stressful as the road narrowed and riders jostled to get high up in the bunch before the corner. I ended up in a poor position several metres off the back of group, the last of my effort used up getting near Mark Walker’s wheel before they went away.

Group 1 Race Stats: Lap Time Avg Speed Lap Time Avg Speed 1 19:55 21.2 2 17:49 23.7 3 18:12 23.2 4 17:59 23.4

_____________________________________________________________________ Race 4 – Etton Date: 9th June Conditions: Dry/Sunny/Strong Breeze

The profile of the Etton circuit suits a fast pace and is more forgiving than the other circuits with a short ramp and a nice long descent. HTRC rider Ben had to pop home for a wheel and missed the start and so decided to ride with Group 1 and help out, dropping back to let Group 1 go near the end. The group was pretty disciplined and a lot of shouting helped keep the group together, several new riders managed to keep with the bunch until the last lap.

Once the groups merged, the ramp before the finish sorted everyone out with the faster groups disappearing into the distance to finish. Having spoken to some of the new riders post-race I could tell confidence and spirits had lifted, fab!

Race 5 – Kilham Date: 23rd June Conditions: Dry/Dull/Light Wind

A tough circuit with a fair ramp leading out of Rudston, another of my favoured circuits. After around lap 2 a couple of riders made a serious break away we watched them make a bit of distance and then a handful of us decided to jump across. We'd formed a breakaway of around 6 of us, myself, Nikki, Rob, Snowy, Kyle and a couple of others.

The group was working really well and I was starting to think we were going to stay away, Snowy even shouted "I want the winner to be from this group", famous last words, we got caught half way round lap 3. Half way around the last lap the faster groups pulled away and left us to duke it out between ourselves Rob and Nikki dropping me and Kyle, and Kyle sprinting far too early allowing me to crawl past him. I shouted "Too early for that sprint" to Kyle, those words turned out to haunt me....

Race 6 – Etton Date: 7th July Conditions: Dry/Sunny/Good Breeze

They say all good things come to those who wait, and with a thinned out field for the Friday night’s big cycling night out at Beverley and very good conditions things, finally went Group 1's way. Although it felt pretty chaotic with weaker riders struggling to get to the front and the usual inefficiencies, the stronger riders were taking the strain on the back straight into the wind and as the stats show we kept very consistent averages.

As we got near the start of the last lap, rumours began to circulate that we were going to stay away. A solid final lap and Group 1 was left to fight for the win.

As we hit that final hill the group began to splinter, I wasn't sure if I was top 10 but knew we'd finally done it. I got past Kyle and thought I had comfortably distanced him, however just before the line I went to zip up and show my HTRC colours and Kyle freewheeled by me to take what later turned out to be 9th place. I'll keep my mouth shut about sprinting early in future.

I was elated with 10th, my first point and was as chuffed for Kyle to be in the points during his first season. We were all grinning and giggling about staying away, brilliant!

Race 7 - Little Weighton Date: 21st July Conditions: Dry/Sunny/Fair Wind Personal expectations were high for this one, however it turned out to be a typical performance with Group 2 and co catching us with a lap or so to go. Group 1 was decimated with a few of us going with Group 2, I was very disappointed dropping off the back of the group on the home straight. The stats show good consistency with that last lap (helped by the Weedley descent and wind) being pretty quick for Group 1/2 and others merged.

Group 1 Race Stats Lap Time Avg Speed Lap Time Avg Speed 1 18:48 23.8 2 18:43 23.9 3 18:43 23.9 4 17:25 25.6

Race 8 – Walkington Date: 4th August Conditions: Dry/Sunny/Fair Wind

The final road race league event of the year. Last year’s race turned out to be the toughest of the year as the faster groups were at it pretty early. Things turned out to be similar to last year, with some of the Group 1 riders expressing themselves more than normal. On the first ascent to High Hunsley a small break nearly went but was soon reeled in.

The fast groups caught us on the final ascent to High Hunsley this year, I managed to stick with the majority of the Group 2/3/Scratch riders. A couple of scratch riders shot off to fight for the win whilst the rest of us started to ride for the scraps. I wasn't panicking like last year

Page 14: Scene - HTRChtrc.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/HTRC-Scene-August-2016.pdf · them just before the first attacks started. Feeling stuffed from the migraine and chase, I sat near

and simply hid as best as I could as I was near maxed out up the hill but stuck with some decent riders.

Unfortunately as the pace pushed again as we started the descent I just fell off the Group. To make things worse the huge gap between myself and the rest of Group 2/3 was soon reduced to nothing and I was dropped to coast home.

Group 1 Race Stats Lap Time Avg Speed Lap Time Avg Speed 1 18:22 23.0 2 18:22 23.0 3 18:24 22.9 4 17:40 23.9

Thanks Group 1 have been Rob, Nikki, Simon, Debbie, Rebecca, Andy, Doug, Ben, Snowy, Rich, Kyle and a good few others - thanks for the helping make that dream come true! I'd like to put out another big thank you to Andy Abbott and all of the marshals, drivers, first aiders, finish judges, fellow riders and of course the people who clapped and cheered us on.

Hope you enjoyed the read and had a giggle at me getting jumped on the line!

Veteran’s 12hr TT Record Broken: Jim Trevor

Jim Trevor added the 12hr Vets TT record to his collection of other Veterans TT records covering a distance of 254.07 miles in the Swift ‘12’ based on the roads around Melbourne and Bubwith in East Yorkshire. The previous record of 248.4 miles lasted many assaults from a multitude of great Hull Thursday veteran testers having stood since 1971. In fact Jim Trevor narrowly missed the record in 2015 by just 0.7 miles.

Jim on the start line 6:30am with a daunting 12 hours to go!

Jim managed 5th place in the race beating the World 24hr TT Champion Chris ‘Hoppo’ Hopkinson, who is the guest at the 2016 Club Dinner, into 6th place with 28 year old Alexander Coleman taking the victory by a clear 17 miles with 280 miles, from local TT powerhouse Doug Hart of Ilkley CC. Many will remember Doug for attacking in this year’s Keith Carter Road Race and staying away for the whole race. The record was broken on undoubtedly one of the toughest 12’s in the country, as most of the roads are spoco in nature. As most Thursday club members will understand from riding the Bubwith ‘10’, these roads are not fast and are about 2 minutes slower than the dual carriageway ‘10’s. So multiply that by 12 hrs and it relates to about 25 miles, lost to those 12hrs events held in Essex and Berkshire.

Page 16: Scene - HTRChtrc.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/HTRC-Scene-August-2016.pdf · them just before the first attacks started. Feeling stuffed from the migraine and chase, I sat near

Jim holding his form after 200 miles of cycling The temperature on the day was kind peaking at about 20 degrees from a 12 degree start at 6.30am. The problem was a rising westerly wind which got up to 20mph which made the stretch from the A1079 to Sutton on Derwent very slow in the closing hours. Jim was supported by the club’s Vets RR champion Neil Dean and duathlete World Championship competitor Mandy, who, in line with RTTC / CTT regulations, ensured Jim was fed, watered and supported mechanically throughout the 12hr event. A true Hull Thursday team effort for the three old timers. When interviewed Jim commented, ‘Of all the records everyone knew I wanted the twelve most of all. It’s the toughest TT event. Finishing a twelve is an achievement never mind taking records. Imagine how your butt feels after 12hrs on a saddle on a TT bike!’

Jim added, “You have to set off steady in a 12 and I averaged 22.5mph for the first 6 hours, so at that point knew the record was a possibility. The problem with the ‘12’ is how you fair for the last 4hrs. After 6 hrs I dropped about 40 watts average in power as my body changed its fuelling system, but was still averaging over 20mph. Until you settle at this power output, this is a low point and the body is telling you to quit due to its lack of fuel. But the determination drives you onwards. At that point I knew I was on for a 255 mile result. I just kept calm and within myself. The last hour I tried to turn up the gas, but the tank was empty. Mandy was giving me reports of my 5th place throughout the closing hours and I fancied a podium and some prize money, but I could do no more without blowing up. As I saw my Garmin pass 248.4 miles I felt great satisfaction and knew the next miles were just bonus miles.” Jim passes on a huge thanks to Mandy and Neil, who got up at 4am to assist over a 12hr period. Jim commented ‘Of all the support I saw out there on the day I had the best, The Deans got it spot on, they were perfect. Mandy has a great understanding of endurance sport and Neil is just tireless and so reliable. I never had to think about support. They were always in the correct place at the correct time. Superb!’

Great Result for John Savage at the Melbourne CC Open 50 on the V350

Congratulations to John Savage on riding a PB in the difficult time trial distance of 50 miles, clocking 2:17:11 on the 31st July, 2016 on the V350 based around Melbourne. John earnt a good 16th place from a 28 rider field, with the event won by controversial competitor Robbie Krygsman of the hosting club, Team Swift. The course is one of the most difficult ‘50’s on the calendar, so don’t be surprised to see more from John in up and coming ‘50’s.

Cleminshaw's Power improves in Windswept Bridlington CC Open 10 on the V718: Neil Cleminshaw (in the style of James Trevor )

Neil managed to produce 303 Watts of Normalised Power (298 watts average) during the 150 field strong event, with a favourable tail wind on the shorter outward leg, the 5 mile mark is achieved well after ascending to the two-roundabout turn and rejoining the A63; for which Cleminshaw's 31mph average was his Strava Personal Best. "I knew from there on to the finish it was all about mitigating my average speed as the fierce head wind hindered the brutal final five miles”. 46 year old Cleminshaw led home a quintet of Hull Thursday riders:

Nutcracker Round 5 - Gandale: Dave Millson

I found myself a lone Wolf for HTRC MTB Team at Round 5 of the Nutcracker MTB Series. On a hot Sunday afternoon I watched the earlier races tackle some of the tricky climbs and descents of the course at Gandale, near Catterick. The military manoeuvres’ land provides a fast, furious and challenging terrain for a mountain bike cross country race. Due to the good spell of weather we had been experiencing the fire roads were dusty gravel with sections that were like riding on marbles. The riverbed run from Gandale, Catterick was bone dry enabling you to see the large boulders, sometimes it’s easier not to see what you are riding over! Luckily the water splash still had enough water in it to make it fun and a welcome cool down. Each lap was about 50%

fire road interspersed with technical (and steep) accents and descents; it was going to be fast and exciting. The course was four laps for the vets and masters, my goal was to improve on last year and finish on the same lap as the winner. A rolling start was agreed to enable feet to be clipped in before the “marble” climb linked us onto the course lap. I couldn’t quite stay with the small front group and battled into the block head wind alone; probably not great tactics! It took me the first lap to suss out the lay of the land and gain some confidence, especially on the drop offs. Just before the end of the first lap Tim Gould flew past from the masters’ race. With a two minute head start it was no surprise, Ady Hill from Squadra wasn’t far behind him and finished a fantastic second in the Masters.

As the laps ticked by I was hitting the technical sections much faster. I particularly enjoyed the loamy wooded section, a steep drop with a tight left hand turn letting go of the brakes into a bermed bowl before a steady climb weaving through the trees back to the gravel road to the finish. As I crossed the line for the final lap the leader hadn’t caught me, so progress from last year and a final lap push around the circuit. I rolled over the line 16.29 down on the winner in 17th out of 25.
