Planning a Trip?Planning a Trip? Are you ready for the road? You didn't think you'd be able to just pack up and go, did you? Not so fast!

Your car needs special attention before you go on a long driving trip. Starting a vacation with a car that has mechanical problemsis a sure fire way to ruin a trip. Take some simple precautions before you hit the road to help make your vacation more pleasant.

Cooling System The cooling system needs to be flushed and re-filled at least once a year in order to keep the cooling system ingood working order. If your coolant hasn't been changed duringthe past year, get the radiator flused and filled before you start

your trip. Check the air conditioning. Is it cold? if not, have a techni-cian inspect it to find out why not.

Drive Belts / HosesDrive Belts and hoses can deteriorate withage and heat. Check all the belts and hoses in your car for signs ofcracks or leaking. Any cracked or damaged belts or hoese should bereplaced before heading out on the road for a long trip.

BatteryA dead battery is one of the more common reasons forbreak-down. Make sure yours is in good condition before you go.

EngineIf your car is due for a tune-up soon, go ahead and getone before leaving on a long trip. Check your owners manual forthe proper intervals for tuning up your engine.

FluidsMake sure to check the levels of transmission fluid, engine oil, brake fluid, washer fluid, power steering fluid and, ofcourse, gas. If you are due for an oil change, get one before youtake the trip.

Suspension If you are going to be towing something, or carry-ing a heavy load, you should definately get your shocks and springschecked out to make sure they can handle the load.

TiresMake sure all tires are properly inflated to the specifica-tions in your owner's manual and have plenty of tread with nouneven wear. Don't forget your spare tire! In an emergency, youdon't want to find out that your spare is flat.

BrakesHave your brakes inspected prior to your trip to ensurethat everything is in good working order.

Windshield WipersMost people don't think about their wind-shield wipers until they are no longer working. Don't wait until youneed them to find out your wipers need to be replaced. Checkthem before your trip. Refill your windshield washer fluid.

LightsTest the brake lights, turn signals and headlights to makesure they work properly and have enough illumiation.

    Don't Let Your Money Evaporate

Fight skyrocketing gas prices by takingcontrol of your vehicle's unnecessary fuelconsumption. Consumers can add milesto every gallon they pump by following afew easy and inexpensive maintenancesteps with their car, SUV, minivan or pick-up truck.

Most motorists don't realize that it's thelittle things that don't take a lot of timeor cost much that can really make a dif-ference when it comes to saving moneyat the pump.

Here are some gas savingmaintenance and driving tipsthat really work:

Vehicle gas caps - About 17 percent ofthe vehicles on the roads have gas capsthat are either damaged, loose or aremissing altogether, causing 147 milliongallons of gas to vaporize every year.

Underinflated tires - When tires aren'tinflated properly it's like driving with theparking brake on and can cost a mile ortwo per gallon.

Worn spark plugs - A vehicle can haveeither four, six or eight spark plugs, which fire as many as 3 million timesevery 1,000 miles, resulting in a lot ofheat and electrical and chemical erosion.A dirty spark plus causes misfiring, whichwastes fuel. Spark plugs need to bereplaced regularly.

Dirty air filters - An air filter that isclogged with dirt, dust and bugs chokesoff the air and creates a "rich" mixture -

too much gas being burned for theamount of air, which wastes gas andcauses the engine to lose power.Replacing a clogged air filter can improvegas mileage by as much as 10 percent, saving about 15 cents a gallon.

Fuel saving driving tipsinclude: Don't be an aggressive driver -Aggressive driving can lower gas mileage

by as much as 33 percent on the highwayand 5 percent on city streets, whichresults in 7 to 49 cents per gallon.

Avoid excessive idling - Sitting idle getszero miles per gallon. Letting the vehiclewarm up for one to two minutes issufficient.

Observe the speed limitGas mileagedecreases rapidly at speeds above 60mph. Each mpg driven over 60 will resultin an additional 10 cents per gallon. Tomaintain a constant speed on thehighway, cruise control is recommended.

Combining errands into one trip savesgas and time. Several short trips takenfrom a cold start can use twice as muchfuel as a longer multi-purpose tripcovering the same distance.

Avoid carrying unneeded heavy itemsin the truck. An extra 100 pounds can cutfuel efficiency by a percent or two.

Answers to Quiz: Planning A TripFrom page 7

1 The answer is FALSE! Wear bars are 2/32" deep. When your tireswear to that point, they're vulnerable to failure and to hydroplaning ona wet road.

2 The answer is TRUE! Some additives in anti-freeze coolant, such asanti-corrosive chemicals, can be depleted with time, yet the anti-freezecoolant looks OK. Regular flushing of the cooling system and replace-ment of anti-freeze coolant helps avoid a later, and bigger, expense inradiator repair.

3 The answer is TRUE! New spark plug technology, along withimproved engine design and lead-free fuel, have greatly extended sparkplug life. However, the active word in question #3 is "may". Fine print inmost owners manuals indicate circumstances where more frequentengine service is recommended. (Tests show that a 4 cylinder car with

just one spark plug misfiring takes 54% more time than normal toaccelerate from 25 mph to 55 mph.)

4 The answer is TRUE! Other causes of brake noise include thesqueal of a wear warning indicator or, in the case of excessive wear, theannoying sound of metal against metal.

5 The answer is FALSE! That interval is recommended for drivingunder optimum conditions. Check your owners manual. Most techni-cians advise 3,000 4,000 mile oil changes for maximum engine life.Always change the filter when changing oil.

6 The answer is FALSE! A clogged fuel filter is most likely to cause afaltering engine under heavy load.

7 The answer is FALSE! Invest your money in a diagnostic check-up.The engine turned over, so the battery probably is OK.

8 The answer is FALSE! Back to diagnosis. The engine cant turn overif the starter is shot.

9 The answer is FALSE! Cooling system trouble is the most commoncause of car trouble on the open road.

1 The answer is FALSE! Weak or overloaded springs cause the rearend to sag, not weak shocks. Air shocks, which can be inflated for extrasupport, can be installed as can overload springs or other auxiliary sup-port accessories available in auto supply stores.

    Take Care of Your Tires!

Of the thousands of components in a vehicle, tires areprobably the most important. Your life literally dependson them one hundred percent of the time you are on the

road. Recent events, in which tire failures have allegedlycaused a number of fatal crashes, have focused attentionon the vital role tires play in vehicle safety.

Caring for tires is extremely important and relatively easy.In fact, The Rubber Manufacturers Association recom-mends getting in the habit of taking five minutes everymonth to check your tires, including the spare.

Proper tire pressure goes a long way toward improvingyour vehicle's gas mileage. Tire treads must have at least2/32- inch depth in every groove. If the tread is wearingdifferently between the edges and the middle tread, check the tire pressure. If one side of your tire tread is

wearing more than the other, it may be time for an align-ment. Check tire pressure. The correct pressure should belisted in the owner's manual and on the inside of yourdriver's door.

Check tire pressures and adjust at least once a month.

Inspect tires regularly for abnormal wear or damage.

Rotate tires every 6,000 miles or according to owner's manual.

    Maintain tires in proper balance.

Maintain steering and suspension in proper alignment.

    Never overload a tire.

    Replace tires when required.

Select the right tires for your vehicle and driving environment.

    Brake Repairs Needed?Don't Take Chances!

Brake repairs - critical? Of course! Your brakes keepyour family safe. Save money on brake repairs and

    parts with these tips:

Brake Rotors (discs) should be inspected all the way aroundthe surface and on both sides for any concentric scoring(grooves) or obvious defects. If defects are found, replace

your rotors immediately. Any rotor discoloration may be asign of overheating and an inspection by a brake repair pro-fessional is needed.

Brake Pads will normally match rotor scoring but shouldalso be inspected for uneven wear, breakage or cracking onthe friction surface. Again, if defects are found, replace thepads immediately. Many cars also have brake pad sensors

to warn of pad wear. If your car uses sensors, replace theseat the same time as your pads.

Brake Drums (if equipped) should also be inspected on aregular basis. Check for the same types of flaws as notedabove. The drums should not have excessive grooves orhave a deep "trough" dug into them where the shoes ride.

Brake Shoes (if equipped) should be worn evenly and haveno rivets protruding to the friction surface.

A "spongy" brake pedal or one that's gotten lower under-

foot also needs looking into. It could be caused by stickingcalipers, worn pads, low fluid or hydraulic system problems.

Constant brake noise is never a good sound and anygrinding noise spells real trouble! Mostimportantly: As soon as any problem is noticed, getit repaired immediately. Delaying brake repairs isextremely dangerous. Overstressed rotors anddrums can break. Brakes may be too worn or dam-aged to stop your car in an emergency. Even if youmanage to avoid physical harm, the longer youdelay fixing brake problems, the more you increasethe cost of doing so. Remember, dont take chanceswith your brakes!

At some point in our lifetime, most of us will encounter a situation that requires expert help. When you

need legal help, it can be a daunting task trying to find the right person to answer your questions and to

provide some direction. Navigating the legal system without the help of a qualified professional can leave

you confused, overwhelmed, and feeling like there is no one out there who can just talk you through your situation

and explore your options for a reasonable price. In California, obtaining a divorce requires a minimum of three

steps the filing of the Petition, process service on the other party, and a subsequent filing asking the Court to

issue a Judgment. Many people do not realize that they have not done their finals (the last step) and that they

are still married and this can have financial consequences on both parties. And if the parties have children and/or

property, the process requires additional paperwork to address these issues, so that the Court may have the ability

to issue a Judgment. At California Divorce & Self-Help Services, we specialize in Family Law matters. Our staff

has 20 years of combined experience working with the court system, and can handle nearly any family law matter.

We have the knowledge and the understanding of the processes necessary to walk you through, step by step, sothat you, too, will have a better understanding of the required steps to manage your own case. In most cases, we

can help you for $99 to start a new dissolution, and as little as $175 to finish an existing dissolution. We can

determine if you qualify for the Courts filing fee waiver, cutting your costs, and we also provide all of the copies

and deliver your papers to the Courthouse for you. We also have a network of professionals available for our own

consultation to ensure that your case is handled in a professional, ethical, and efficient manner. Our staff is diverse

in their knowledge, and this allows us to be able to

    provide a variety of services.

In addition to our services offered, we have affiliations

with other services that can help you with various needs

    such as:

    Home Remodeling, Immigration Services, Mobile

    Notary Services, and Property Management.

Our office is located on the Northwest corner of Shaw

and College in Fresno and we are open Monday through

Friday, 8am to 5pm, and Saturdays by appointment. Our
