Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord-March 25, 2018

From the Pastor’s Column / Noticias del Párroco

As the Eucharist unites us as one Body in Christ, may we faithfully live and share the Gospel. A medida que la Eucaristía nos une como un solo Cuerpo en Cristo, vivamos y anunciemos fielmente el Evangelio.

-Fr. William Dotson

Today we begin Holy Week, the high point of the Church’s liturgical

year. This week gives us much material for reflection as we walk

step-by-step with Christ through His Passion, Death, and Resurrec-

tion.

- Palm Sunday: Today’s Mass begins with Christ’s triumphal entry

into Jerusalem a week before His Resurrection. The people hailed

Him as the Messiah, the Son of David, and shouted joyful cries of

“Hosanna.” Yet the Gospel reading today shows how quickly the

crowd changes. Now, instead of joyful hosannas, they violently shout

“Crucify Him! Crucify Him!”

- Monday: The Gospel for today recounts how Mary, the sister of

Martha and Lazarus, anointed Jesus with oil. Her abundant, sacrifi-

cial gift of the oil is a beautiful symbol of Christ’s sacrifice on the

Cross.

- Tuesday: Today we hear from St. John’s Gospel of Judas’s betray-

al. Despite being an Apostle, Judas betrayed Christ to those who

sought to kill Him.

- Wednesday: Today’s Gospel is St. Matthew’s account of the be-

trayal of Judas and the preparations for the Last Supper. Everything

is set for what is about to happen.

- Holy Thursday: This morning, all the priests of the Archdiocese

gather at the Cathedral for the Chrism Mass. At this Mass, the Arch-

bishop blesses the Holy Oils that will be used throughout the year

and the priests renew their priestly promises. This evening, we cele-

brate the Mass of the Lord’s Supper. We recall how, the night before

His death, Christ instituted the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist,

giving us His Body and Blood. Also at this Mass, the priest washes

the feet of a group of the faithful in imitation of Christ washing the

feet of the Apostles at the Last Supper.

- Good Friday: Today we commemorate the sorrowful, salvific death

of Christ. Out of love for us, Christ handed Himself over to death so

that we might have eternal life. At the liturgy today, we come for-

ward to venerate the Cross, the sign of our salvation.

- Holy Saturday: This is a day of quiet as we remember Christ’s time

in the tomb. The Church is empty and the sacraments are not cele-

brated. Then, in the evening, we gather for the Easter Vigil. At this

Mass, we hear retold the story of God’s plan of salvation throughout

history, culminating with the Death and Resurrection of Christ. Also

at this Mass, the members of the RCIA receive the sacraments of

Baptism, Confirmation, and Communion, sharing in the grace that

comes from the Risen Christ.

- Easter Sunday: Alleluia! He is Risen! Christ has burst the bonds of

death and conquered Hell and sin. Today is the Church’s great day of

rejoicing as the light of the Resurrection floods the whole world.

The last three days of Holy Week are referred to as the Easter or Sacred Triduum (Triduum Sacrum), the three-part drama of

Christ's redemption: Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday.

Holy Thursday is also known as "Maundy Thursday." The word maundy comes from the Latin word mandatum

(commandment) which is the first word of the Gospel acclamation:

Mandátum novum do vobis dicit Dóminus, ut diligátis ínvicem, sicut diléxi vos. "I give you a new command-ment: Love one another as I have loved you." (John 13:34)

These are the words spoken by our Lord to His apostles at the Last Supper, after he com-

pleted the washing of the feet. We should imitate Christ's humility in the washing of the feet.

By meditating on the Gospels (cf. Matt 26:1 ff.; Mark 14:1 ff.; Luke 22:1 ff.; John 13:1 ff.),

we can recall to mind Jesus' actions of that day. Father Bernard Strasser summarizes all

the events of that first Holy Thursday:

...They included: (1) the eating of the Easter lamb or the paschal meal; (2) the washing of the disciple's feet; (3) the institution of the Most Holy Eucharist (the first Mass at which Jesus Christ, the eternal high priest, is the celebrant; the first Communion of the apostles; the first conferring of Holy Orders); (4) the foretelling of Judas' betrayal and Peter's denials; (5) the farewell discourse and priestly prayer of Jesus; (6) the agony and capture of Jesus in the Gar-den of Olives. — ©1947, With Christ Through the Year

We have 41 teens and 6 chaperones attending this summer! This year we are heading there a day early and returning a day late as we will be stop-ping at a church on the way there and the way back. This will help us prepare our minds and hearts for the weekend and take time to reflect and recharge before returning to our daily lives. The cost is $280 per teen, which includes transportation, meals, lodging, a t-shirt and programming. You are welcome to provide a full or partial sponsorship for a teen. All sponsor-ships remain anonymous. If you are interested or would like more information, please contact Kristin Williams at [email protected].

Meal A Month for March 2018 The Next Meal a Month grocery collection will be March 24/25, 2018. This food is distributed to needy families from the FISH food pantry. Items needed this month are canned chicken, canned tomatoes, canned chili, Mac –n-Cheese, Fruit and dishwashing soap. During the month of March only, we are also collecting 15 oz. cans of Spaghetti 0s for the Mini-Vinnies. We have some very special peo-ple at our parish, who not only contrib-ute the food monthly, but those who collect it, and take it to the FISH distribu-tion site. Thank you all for being God’s hands in this particular ministry. Meal a Month had a particularly generous amount of food donated to it for the month of February. Nor-mally only one person is needed to deliver the food, but for February, there was a need for two delivery persons. Thank you SCB for all your love and generos-ity as you fulfill this Corporal Act of Mercy by feeding the hungry.

Your Loving Sacrifices Make All The Difference

March 25, 2018 Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord

Today is Palm Sunday and the beginning of the holiest of Christian weeks. Let us pray for the grace to take up our own

cross and to follow Jesus through death to new life.

During Lent, through your gifts, the Society of St.

Vincent de Paul was able to bring the mercy of Jesus into the hearts of the poor, by assisting 60 families,

serving 379 meals in our food kitchen, and providing $8113.47 in assistance for utility, rent and

transportation expenses.

WE THANK EACH OF YOU for the great love you show to our Borromeo Family carrying on the work of Jesus and to those in need-by the generosity you display when you share your treasure, and all God’s gifts to you, given for others.

Due to an early bulletin transmittal schedule, we will not have our numbers in for our donations. We will be running a week or so behind, due to other early bulletin transmittal times. In a week or so, we should be back on our normal schedule. Thank you and sorry for any inconvenience this will cause.

St. Charles Borromeo Prayer Tree: 928-2970 or [email protected]

This Sunday, called Palm or Passion Sunday, is the first day of Holy Week. Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday are called the Triduum—three days that are the high-light of the Church year. There are two Gospels proclaimed at to-day’s Mass. The first Gospel, proclaimed before the procession with palms, tells of Jesus’ triumphant entrance into Jerusalem. Rid-ing on a borrowed colt, Jesus was hailed by the crowds as they blessed God and shouted “Hosanna!” This event is reported in each of the four Gospels.

At the Liturgy of the Word on Palm Sunday, the events of Jesus’ passion are proclaimed in their entirety. In Lectionary Cycle B, we read the passion of Jesus as found in the Gospel of Mark. We will hear these events proclaimed again when we celebrate the Triduum later in the week. On Good Friday, we will read the passion of Je-sus from the Gospel of John.

In Mark’s Gospel, Jesus’ passion and death are presented as the consequence of the tension between the Jewish authorities and Je-sus that had been building throughout his public ministry. This tension reached its breaking point when Jesus drove the merchants and moneychangers from the Temple. After this event, the chief priests and scribes began seeking a way to put Jesus to death, and yet, this is only the surface explanation for his death.

When Jesus was arrested and brought before the Sanhedrin—the council of Jewish priests, scribes, and elders—he was charged with blasphemy, citing his threat to the Temple. When he was brought before Pilate, however, the religious authorities presented his crime as a political one, charging that Jesus claimed to be king of the Jews. In continuity with a theme of Mark’s Gospel, the messianic claim of Jesus is widely misunderstood.

In Mark’s Gospel, Jesus’ disciples are rarely models of faith and do little to invoke confidence in their capacity to continue his ministry after his death. They fare no better in Mark’s narrative of Jesus’ passion and death. At the Last Supper, the disciples insisted that none among them would betray Jesus. When Jesus predicted that their faith would be shaken in the events ahead, Peter and the other disciples protested vehemently. Yet in the garden of Gethsemane, Jesus returned three times to find them sleeping. Jesus prayed in agony over his impending fate while his disciples slumbered through the night. Just as Jesus predicted, Peter denied Jesus, and the disciples were absent during Jesus’ passion and death. Only the women who had been followers of Jesus in Galilee are said to have been present at the Crucifixion, but they remained at a distance.

Throughout this Gospel, Mark challenges the reader to consider the claim with which the Gospel begins: Jesus is the Son of God. When we read Mark’s account of the passion, we begin to comprehend the deeper theological statement being made about Jesus’ death. In Mark’s telling of the passion narrative, Jesus understood his death to have been preordained, and he accepted this death in obedience to God’s will. Jewish Scripture is quoted only once, but there are several references to the fulfillment of the Scriptures. Jesus under-stood his anointing in Bethany as an anticipation of his burial, and he announced that this story would be told together with the Gospel

throughout the world. Jesus predicted his betrayal by Judas as well as Peter’s denial. At his arrest, Jesus acknowledged that the preor-dained time had arrived. Jesus was both confident and silent be-fore his accusers. After he was sentenced to death, Jesus did not speak again until his final cry from the cross. The bystanders mis-understood and believed that he was calling for Elijah. The Ro-man centurion, however, affirmed what Mark has presented throughout this Gospel: Jesus is the Son of God. Nowhere was this revealed more fully than in his death on the cross.

During Holy Week, we prayerfully remember the events of Jesus’ passion and death. As we meditate on the cross, we ask again and anew what it means to make the statement of faith that Jesus, in his obedient suffering and dying, revealed himself to us as God’s Son.
