Tucson Meet Yourself Folklife Festival celebrates the living traditional arts and expressions of everyday life of our multinational Arizona-Sonora region. This is the 39th edition of what began as a small gathering of home cooks, folk artists, and traditional musicians in 1974. The festival has grown significantly since then, but we still hold firm on our belief that ordinary people make beautiful arts that grow from their hearts, their families and communities.
We present the Festival free, as our gift to the commu-nity; but this year we are asking for a suggested dona-tion of $1 (a small gift of love to help the festival remain strong financially so it can be around another 39 years!)
We thank you for your generosity!
Welcome!
Highlights2012 Festival

POW WOW 101
Saturday and Sunday, Jàcome Library Plaza
Professor and Chair of the Department of Folklore and ethno-musicology at Indiana university. Professor Goldstein's talk will explore the story-making activities that have surrounded the AIDS epidemic. Told cross-culturally, AIDS legends recount many fright-ening scenarios and conspiracy theories. Though fascinating and intriguing, these narratives do more than merely entertain. They warn and inform, articulate notions of risk, provide political commen-tary on public health actions, and offer insight into the relationship between cultural and health truths.

A unique TMY tradition is that the last word spoken and heard at the festival be in O'odham (on Sunday all per-formances end by 5:30pm except the Tohono O'odham ceremonial dance and music which run through 6pm at the City Hall Stage). Why do we do this? Big Jim Griffith explains:
"This is really O'odham country. The first language that we know was spoken here was O'odham; according to O'odham Creation stories, this is where they came to when they were led out of the underworld; many older O'odham believe that they were made by the Creator out of the specific soil of this place. The rear guard is the place of danger, and therefore of honor. Its job was to hold off the enemy as long as possible so the women and children (the future of the group) could escape. For those reasons I always tried to put traditional Tohono O'odham musc and dance last on the last day. As far as possible, when the O'odham announcers stopped speaking, we would shut down the sound system, so that the festival was closed by O'odham voices. Things didn't always work that way, but it was announced as an ideal."
